What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Cupcakes and Lace By Taima Kern/Action Publications

When planning on having your wedding cake professionally done, there are a ton of different things that a bride-to-be must consider. You’ve got to decide between having a tiered cake large enough to feed all of your guests, or having a small tiered cake for show, and a sheet cake for your guests. You’ve got to pick between traditional wedding cakes, or the new and trending cupcakes. You’ve got to decide on your cake type and filling flavors, and you’ve got to decide how it’s going to look on the outside. Sound like a ton of stuff to follow? Well, fortunately, Fond du Lac has many establishments ready and willing to help you. Among these, are Bob and Bonnies Donuts and(CAKES), Blessed Bee Cupcakes, and Bryanna’s. Bonnie Badura, of Bob and Bonnies, and Becky LaCrosse of Blessed Bee had several suggestions for the new bride to make the process as easy as possible so you can be prepared for your first wedding cake appointment.

Planning “We like to have the bride come in with some direction of what they’d like,” says Bonnie. “Picture references, ideas on shape and type, color scheme, how many they’re planning on feeding, anything can be helpful.” Though they won’t turn away someone who is without ideas, for they’ve got several display cakes and books full of ideas. This process usually involves an initial meeting to discuss concept, as well as additional meetings for tasting and consultation as the big day nears. Blessed Bee also suggests that brides bring in flowers that they’ve chosen for their wedding, as owner Aimee McCarty works very closely with local florists while working on her cakes.

Fillings: There are a ton of options to choose from for the content of the cake, and some of the major ones trending at Bob and Bonnies this summer include Red Velvet cake, with fruit or chocolate fillings, specifically raspberry or lemon fruit fillings, and a chocolate-peanut butter fudge filling. When it comes to Blessed Bee, flavorings and fillings are as diverse as the client would like, with innovative flavors like fruit punch, or watermelon, to name a few. If you can think of it, they can probably manage it.

Blessed Bee even can provide candy buffets or truffles as non-traditional options, as well as their champagneflavored ganache. “If it’s food and workable, we’ll work with it,” says Becky.

Trending this summer: Trending designs this spring have been leaning back towards the more traditional and clean cut wedding cake, with frosting resembling drapery, light flower or gem accents, and ribbons in the bride’s colors. Lots of brides have also been using little bridges to link different sections of the cake, giving it a very retro feel. The other major trend this summer is in cupcake weddings. Right now, Bob and Bonnie are assembling over 1200 cupcakes for three different upcoming weddings, in tons of bright colors and designs. In addition, brides are welcome to bring their own flowers or decorations to be incorporated into the cakes, leading to an intensely individualized experience and cake. At Blessed Bee, however, there is less of a trend visible because of the rainbow of options available. “Aimee does everything and anything to accommodate the bride, groom and family,” says Becky, and that leads to no two weddings looking the same.

Cost: Now, there’s no way to easily gauge how much the cake will cost until the consultations are complete and the bride has had a chance to decide between tiered cakes, sheet cakes, fondant cakes and cupcakes (which are just as versatile as big traditional cakes), but the average bakery bill lands somewhere between $200 and $500 for feeding the average wedding party of 150 to 200 guests. This is, of course, only a vague estimate, as each cake is as individual as the bride. On the other side of the coin, Blessed Bee gives a range of $1.75 - $6.75 per serving (whether the serving is a single cupcake or a piece of regular cake).

Contact: Bob and Bonnies Donuts and (CAKES) can be found on the web at http://bobandbonniesdonuts.com/ and on Facebook, or by stopping in at their shop at 54A Halbach Ct., FDL or calling 923-4321. Blessed Bee is located at 29 N. Main Street, and on Facebook. They can also be reached on the phone at 924-0809 or by email at blessedbeecakes@gmail.com

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Flowers

Delicate and Durable

By Taima Kern/Action Publications

Flowers and table decorations are easily the more fragile part of a wedding. With delicate glass shapes, lights, flowers (both silk and real) there is a ton of stuff to consider. Flowers can bring so much light and life to a wedding, and the traditions of a bridal bouquet is as old as weddings themselves. Flowers come in a hundred types and color combinations, and it can seem incredibly daunting to try to decide what you want, but they are one of the things that need to be considered sooner rather than later. For example, Wood’s Floral & Gifts from Downtown Fond du Lac suggests that brides come in six months in advance of their big day, to assure that they can reserve the date, as well as having consultations regarding colors and flower types two-three months in advance. Wood’s Floral and Gifts is a full-service florist, and make a point of assisting with everything from corsages and boutonnières to table centers, and they come out to your venue and set everything up, pin everything on, and make sure that everything is sorted out.

What they expect: Florists would rather that you have an idea of what you want for your colors and flower

types ahead of time, and this if often the case anyway, since flowers are picked to match dresses and colors, rather than the other way around. But it’s always better if you’ve got at least an opinion, because nothing is accomplished when the customers are neutral to everything. “We’re the ones that pull everything together,” says Ken Giebel, of Wood’s Floral and Gifts. “And we try to make sure that everything matches nicely.”

Trending this summer: “There are a surprising number of brides looking into the deep purple flowers,” says Ken. “Many of the plum or eggplant shade purples are in high demand.” But this isn’t always the case, of course. With so many types of flowers to choose from, every bride reaches for something different. In previous years, roses have been big, or tulips, but this year the selections are as eclectic as the brides, with special attention given to Hydrangeas. There have been some highlights though. “We’ve got an upcoming wedding where everything is completely white, everything from the blooms to the branches is white or crystal,” says Ken. Wood’s also has many types of acrylic “crystals” that accent any simple display.

Making an appointment to see one of the florists is the best way to assure that you can find someone to talk to, especially at Wood’s. “People come in on the weekends and wonder why the florists are gone, and it’s because we’re full service and they’re off servicing a wedding,” says Ken. “The best way to make sure that someone’s here to help you is to call ahead. Customers must remember that you want us to service your wedding perfectly, so let us service other weddings perfectly too, because you’d hate it if we left in the middle of yours to help someone else.”

Often the first thing on a bride’s mind is her dress. Even as children, brides are already planning what kind of dress they want, and though their tastes may change as they grow, the first thing on almost every bride’s to-do list is to call up a bridal store and get in line for fittings. With 75 years in the bridal business, Edith’s is not only a cornerstone of Downtown Fond du Lac, but also a long-trusted source for bridal gowns, tuxedos, bridesmaids’ dresses, and mother-of-the-bride dresses.

Planning:

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Bridal

Gowns &Tuxedos By Taima Kern/Action Publications

Special order dresses should be put in up to nine months in advance of when they’re needed, as they take an average of four to six weeks to come in, and up to three months for alterations. That being said, Edith’s does have a large selection of dresses that can be bought right off the rack, and with Edith’s full stock of onsite Tuxedos, brides and grooms can be in and out in a few hours. “In the effort to achieve stress-free or less-stress situations, the sooner the better,” remarks Cathy Diette, co-owner of Edith’s. She and her husband Tom have run the store for a very long time, and have seen many weddings come and go. Five to six months is also suggested for bridesmaids’ dresses, and bridal parties are encouraged to order all of the dresses at the same time, so ordering is often put off until all of the women have been sized and fitted. “They’ve all got to go at the same time so as to assure that the dye lot is the same on all of the dresses, so they’re all the same shade,” advises Cathy. They also take three to four months to come in.

Trending: “There’s a lot of lace recently,” says Cathy, “in both ball gown style dresses and slim dresses, with a lot of personalization with beads, flowers or feathers,” and the same is true for accessories. Brides have recently been known to abandon the traditional veil and replace it with a tiara or comb embellished with feathers and flowers or gems and beads. As for bridesmaids’ dresses, there have been a lot sold in the deep purple color scheme.

Cost: As with all parts of the wedding, the cost is variable on so many numbers that a basic quote is nearly impossible. Formal wedding dresses tend to range from $500$1200, where as dresses without a train can start as low as $200, and go up from there. Edith’s also offers a full, talented, long-term staff of seamstresses for custom and redesigning work and alterations.

Contact: Edith’s Bridal can be contacted at 921-2420, or by stopping in at their shop, located at 9 S. Main Street. They can also be found online at www.ediths.com. Top Left: Beaded and feathered hair accessories are becoming one of the largest trends in 2012, at times even replacing the traditional veil. What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

By Taima Kern/Action Publications

One of the non-negotiable things about a wedding are the invitations and the savethe-date fliers that have to be sent out. There’s no easy alternative to traditional invitations to guarantee that everyone hears about your wedding. In the future it may be possible to do everything electronically, but for now, the way to ease the stress of writing your address four hundred times (on the inside and on the envelope) and tying a million tiny ribbons is to go to a stationary expert and have the invitations done professionally. As You Wish is a local stationary shop that has a huge section devoted to bridal invites and save the date cards, as well as programs, place cards, table numbers, envelope printing and digital calligraphy, as well as the cheery disposition of it’s owner, Kathy Gieschen.

Planning: “It can take up to a couple months to get custom invitations printed,” says Kathy, urging brides to come in and make an appointment for a consultation sooner rather than later. “It obviously takes longer the more complex they are, but nothing is too elaborate.” As in all things, the more time allowed, the better. Also, when approaching this topic, it helps if the bride has a nailed down list of how many of any given object will be needed. Also any ideas are always welcome, but

there are tons of examples and options for brides to choose from if they’re at a loss. Invitations can be as simple as a little note card, or as complex as a threepages fold-out with pockets and maps and self-addressed-stamped-envelopes for return of RSVPs. “Some brides even put in directions, lists of local hotels and accommodations, as well as itineraries of events for the day before, like brunches or night-before parties for family coming into town from further away,” says Kathy.

Trending this summer: In the continuing trend of the summer of 2012, highly sought colors include the darker richer purples and more traditional and eloquent styling. “I’ve also been making a ton of customized table centers and numbers,” remarks Kathy. It is not uncommon these days to have more than just a number at each table to accompany the centers.

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Beautiful Wedding Ramada’s Ballroom & Lakeside’s Gazebo There is an incredible dichotomy in reception locations, depending largely on catering and party size. Many people reserve ballrooms at hotels or country clubs, but just as many prefer to be out in nature at a state park or city park. In Fond du Lac, the most popular options are the historical Ramada, or Lakeside Park. The Ramada features cocktail rooms, a promenade, a large deck, and a beautiful ballroom that accommodates up to three hundred guests. They also offer in-house fullservice catering, and cake cutting, as well as discounts on blocks of rooms for guests. “We do suggest that you call us right away,” says Elizabeth Patton, the Ramada’s on-site wedding coordinator. “We’re booked up a year and a half in advance.” But it’s worth it to have all of the parts of the

reception all taken care of by one source. “We also have an detailed summary and checklist of everything we offer,” remarks Elizabeth. The part of the second floor that caters to weddings consists of a beautiful promenade with a huge mirror at the end, a bar, deck and cocktail areas to entertain guests, and a ballroom that after being set up, remains locked until the bride and groom arrive, so that they may be the first to enter. Within the ballroom, there’s more than enough room for DJs, food and dancing, as well as tables that each seat ten. In opposition, anyone who’s taken a walk in Lakeside Park knows the beautiful gazebo and lakefront areas and pavilions where a bride and groom might meet their family

in a more informal setting. That being said, catering will be left up to the bride and groom, as well as sleeping accommodations for the family. In some cases, these are deciding factors, but this is not always the case. Every wedding is different and intensely individualized. But all in all, the same statement always rings true. “Relish in the planning and in the moments, the day will be there before you know it,” says Elizabeth.

Contact: To reserve the park, interested parties should call 3223460. To contact the Ramada, interested parties can call 923-3000, and Elizabeth Perron at ext. 4999.

The Ramada’s ballroom seats 300, and is truly a beautiful work of architecture, with huge windows and a center chandelier. Here, the Ramada’s Wedding Planner Elizabeth Perron stands, waiting to help you plan your reception at the Ramada. Photo by Taima Kern/Action Publications.

What to expect when you’re expecting a wedding

Find the

Perfect Ring to Pop the Question By Taima Kern/Action Publications The most common part of a wedding is the ring. This iconic symbol of marriage and status has always haunted the grooms-to-be who headache forever over the perfect ring that will please his bride, and fit his budget. There’s no denying that rings can get pricey, but there more common ways these days to cut costs, but still maintain all of the meaning. One of the local establishments that is ready and willing to help is Goldsmith. Run by Ron and Terri Emanuel, the jeweler is one of the few remaining goldsmiths in the area. With both display rings ready for immediate purchase, in-house financing, and Ron ready and waiting to make the perfect customized ring, Goldsmith’s has been serving the Fond du Lac area for 40 years and several generations of customers.

Planning and process: “I’d say that seventy-five percent of men come in alone to get the ring, where as only twentyfive percent come in as a couple, though we know that all of them know what their bride would prefer,” says Terri. But she has been noticing a recent increase in knowledge among the cliental, with more customers coming in knowing exactly what they want. Goldsmith also uses a state-of-the-art laser ring design program called CAD-cam, which allows grooms and brides to view a computerized concept of what a custom ring will look like.

As a guide to making your decision on rings easier, Goldsmith has a program for customers to use that allows them to see what is available with criteria that they input, such as cut of the gem, style, metal type, etc.

Customers can select stone color, cut, ring metal type and so on, and the computer will show them what types of ring it has that fit those qualifications, and from this sketch, Ron can make a wax dummy of the ring to cast in the requested metal and set with the appropriate stones. “I’ve learned that many people are visual learners, and trying to explain the difference in cuts is easier when it can be visualized on the computer screen,” says Terri. Customized rings should be planned and ordered a few weeks in advance to leave time for the work to be done.

Trending ring types: “The biggest sellers continue to be the round-cut solitaire diamond in a yellow gold setting for brides,” remarks Terri, “and recently, grooms’ rings have been leaning towards the heavier metals, like tungsten and titanium.” It seems that people like the sleek and simple rings. It is also not uncommon for people to bring in existing rings to be modified. A goldsmith like Ron has the ability to re-use old gold (with new mixed in to assure that there’s enough) to make a new ring, and re-set it with the existing stones, or even with other loose stones that are either brought in by the customer or selected from the store’s stock. In one step, brides and grooms can take care of both the “something old” and “something new” in their bridal checklist, as well as maintain the meaning behind an inherited ring.

Services: Goldsmiths is a full-service jeweler, and also has a number of options for wedding rings, engagement rings, bridal-party gifts, and attendance gifts, and offers resizing and many other ring-upkeep services for their customers. “At least give us the opportunity to please,” says Terri. “I am absolutely confident that we can find the perfect ring for every bride.”

Contact: The Goldsmith is located at 177 S. Main Street in downtown Fond du Lac, and they can be reached via email: thegoldsmith@tds.net or by phone at 921-3113. More information can also be found on their website: www.thegoldsmithfdl.com.

At Goldsmith, anything is possible. Above is pictured a ring worn by the owner, Terri Emanuel, displaying her husband Ron’s skills as a goldsmith.
