WELCOME Over the years, many have called Fond du Lac home — from the Winnebago Indians who hunted the meadows and woods for game to the early explorers and land speculators who mapped out the tracts of land that would become the city of Fond du Lac. The fabric of Fond du Lac County’s history becomes richer and more textured with the passage of time.

By 1787, French traders established a trading post along the banks of the Fond du Lac River. Nearly 50 years later, Fond du Lac would be well on its way to

becoming settled, thanks to federal judge James Duane Doty who, along with his partners, established a land company to buy and sell land shares to folks out east eager to establish homes, farms and businesses in this promising new land.

by 1870, Fond du Lac was deemed the state’s second largest city and served as a major railroad hub. With 101,635 residents counted in the 2010 census, Fond du Lac is the 13th most populous county in the state.

The first settlers to establish permanent residency were Colwert and Edward Pier. By the end of the 1830s, many pioneers would join them in helping to establish Fond du Lac as a county.

The county’s source of commerce has also changed with the passage of time. Industries that once churned out railroad cars, yeast, lumber and leather have now been replaced by state-of-the-art manufacturers, retail outlets, and modern dairy farms to name just a few.

Nestled along the southern shoreline of Lake Winnebago, Fond du Lac County covers more than 725 square miles of land. By 1850, the county’s 21 townships were established. The county also has within its borders nine villages and two cities along with the northern half of the City of Waupun. According to historical archives,

While Indians claimed the area as their own for centuries, the written history of the area began to unfold in the early 1600s as French voyageurs began exploring the area they would later name Fond du Lac, meaning “farthest end of the lake.”

For more than 100 years, the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce (AC) has served as the advocate of business, industry and community in Fond du Lac County and the surrounding areas. With nearly 900 members, the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce serves the business community throughout Fond du Lac County and northern Dodge County by promoting commerce, developing partnerships, creating opportunities and building community. Windhover CENTER FOR THE ARTS A dynamic development is changing Fond du Lac. When the new arts center opens in downtown Fond du Lac in September it will be a regional destination, a catalyst for new business and recreation opportunities, and provide unparalleled access to arts and entertainment.

For the last several years Windhover Center for the Arts held over 200 events per year, providing high-quality performers like Asleep at the Wheel or The Jimmys, independent films, and small-scale art exhibits. When the multi-million dollar expansion and renovation project is complete, the arts center will still be the home for quality entertainment but at an entirely new level, said Kevin Miller, executive director of Windhover. With double the space and upgraded technology, the arts center will be a premier destination for weddings and corporate gatherings. A new outdoor plaza will be the site of outdoor concerts by major performers using the street as the venue. And a modern new art gallery will house national touring exhibits. Intimate concerts

and films, as well as community programs such as Foot of the Lake Poetry, Children’s Chorale and Fond du Lac Visual Arts, will continue to be part of the arts center. The progress for Windhover has been years in the making, starting back in 2009 with the creation of the Arts and Entertainment District. With the generosity of the Sadoff Family Foundation, Windhover has been able to realize its vision and build a vibrant, healthy downtown Fond du Lac, Miller said. There are two dates to remember in 2013, Miller said. A street party called The Reveal will be held at 5 pm, Tuesday, June 25 in front of Windhover. There will be a free performance by Milwaukee’s own Paul Cebar Tomorrow Sound and attendees will hear what’s next for the arts center. A grand opening of the arts center is set for September 10-14. Museum The Children’s Museum, reopening in Fond du Lac’s Waterfront District, 75 W. Scott Street, takes children on an adventurous tour around the world, from Lake Winnebago to an Italian pizzeria and the African savannah. Visitors from toddlers to tweens can cast images in the Shadow Safari, explore the Great Toddler Reef, build a Great Wall of China, exchange money for world currencies, put on a show in the Big Apple Theater or produce a radio broadcast. With the museum’s relocation and expansion, visitors will enjoy even more play environments, including a Persian Palace, Antarctica Weather Station and more. While the interior of the museum allows children to travel the world,

Theater venues offer intimate and grand scale experiences

Two theaters operated by the Fond du Lac School District offer the community both comfort and style, and draw in nationally acclaimed performers.

Located at the Riverside Elementary School/District Administration Center complex, the 768-seat Little Theatre, a hallmark of the former Goodrich High School at Ninth and Linden streets, boasts an intimate setting modernized with state-of-the art theater equipment.

The Performing Arts Center at Fond du Lac High School is the largest theater in the area. The 1,025-person capacity auditorium with full lobby, mezzanine, box seating, an orchestra pit for 25 musicians, 60-foot fly with catwalk and enhanced support systems is anything but high school level. From show time through curtain call, the PAC offers grandeur in a unique theater. Each year the Fond du Lac Concert Association hosts its annual concert series at the PAC.

The more than 1,550 parking spaces supply easy access, while an elevator makes entry to the boxes and the mezzanine handicap accessible. The facility includes a 56-foot tower with mechanics to pull up and store large pieces of scenery. As a school district facility, the PAC is always busy, utilized by students for annual concerts and performances.

Over the last four years, about $350,000 has been spent on a new stage lighting system, house lighting system, wireless headset communication, and plush, reupholstered velvet seating, making it a popular setting for community plays and school performances. Fond du Lacâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Theater has made the Little Theatre its home. Theater Manager Steve Wilson said that since 2001, a ticket stipend has been in place that requires $1 of every ticket sold to replenish a fund used exclusively for theater maintenance and upkeep. Students from a high school stagecraft technician program operate both theaters. An endowment fund established by the Fond du Lac Area Foundation provides additional money for enhancements. Both venues are available for rental.

There’s No Business like Show Business:

FDL Community Theatre It’s opening night. The theatre is quiet at first, but then gradually it fills with people arriving for the night’s performance. Soon there is a buzz in the theatre of people chatting, greeting friends, or commenting on something they read in the program. As the house lights are lowered, a hush falls across the audience, anxious to see this new production. The curtains are drawn and then it is on with the show! Our mission is to advance the arts in the Fond du Lac area, including the theatre and its allied fields, and to provide its members with experience in all phases of live public dramatic entertainment; to provide the Fond du Lac area with performances in the dramatic arts. Our goal is simple: to bring as much participatory, live theater to Fond du Lac as we can. By ‘participatory’ we mean that we don’t hire outside groups to perform here. We’re a grass-roots, hands-on, do-ityourself group. Our active members

With the first production (“Anastasia”) in 1958, Fond du Lac Community Theater has become a staple of life in Fond du Lac. FDLCT puts on four shows a year and tries to offer a variety including comedies, dramas and musicals. Recent musicals have included, “Seussical the Musical”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, and “RENT.” And some recent dramas and comedies have included “The Sting,” “Clue” and “A Midnight Summer’s Dream.” For a list of upcoming productions, visit www. fdlct.com. If you’ve been to a production, you always walk away remember the actors, the dialogue and the songs you heard. But Community Theatre is more than just the people you see on stage during a production. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, the

theatre produces four productions a year. From auditions to opening night, a lot of planning and hard work takes place. Once the playbill is selected then the directors put together their production team which includes an Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Costumer, Set Designer, Music Director and more. Auditions follow, then the show is cast and rehearsals begin. If you stop at the Community Theatre building at 250 W. Ninth Street during any given rehearsal night you would find a bustle of activity. The costumer might be in the sewing room putting final touches on a costume. The set construction crew would be painting the set. The Prop Team might be in the back room going through possible props for the show. And while this is going on, the publicity committee is out canvassing the city with posters and flyers about an upcoming show. Whether you work as a lighting

are unpaid volunteers. So why do we do it? The short answer is: ‘For the fun of it.’

The Galloway House and Village, located at 336 Old Pioneer Road, midway between Highways 175 and 45, is an authentic village surrounding a 30-room mid-Victorian mansion. Tours of the buildings and grounds take place Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus weekends in September. The 30-room mid-Victorian mansion boasts four fireplaces, Italianate details, and many pieces of original furniture. The 25 historic buildings on the property include a church,

photographer’s shop, dress shop, toy shop, town hall, newspaper print shop, one-room school house, church, photographer’s studio, general store and post office. Also on the grounds are a fire station, grist mill, veterinary clinic, depot and caboose, blacksmith shop and log cabin. The Blakely Museum, containing historical collections from Native American to present day, is also on site, along with a barracks from the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Galloway House grounds is host to weddings, a fundraising icecream social and vintage car show, civil war reenactments, Phantoms of Fond du Lac weekends in October and

The original portion of the farmhouse was built in 1847 by Selim Newton, an early settler of the Fond du Lac area. In 1868, he sold the property to Edwin H. Galloway, another early settler. Four generations of Galloways lived in the house, remodeling it into an Italianate-style villa, popular in the Victorian era. It was left in the hands of caretakers in 1925. In 1954, the Galloway home, its summer house and the carriage house were donated to the Fond du Lac County Historical Society by Edwin Pierce Galloway, grandson of the original owner. The Historical Society immediately

Lakeside

Located on the southern shore of Lake Winnebago, Lakeside Park is known throughout the region as a scenic site for picnics, recreation and festivals.

Lakeside Park is the jewel in the crown of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many parks and one of the favorites in the extensively used network of parks countywide. Until it was fully developed, Lakeside Park was a lowland area dominated by cattails and other

marshland plants. In 1835, officials purchased the marshy land at the foot of Lake Winnebago and the city of Fond du Lac grew around it. Development of Lakeside Park began in earnest in 1896. Gravel roadways were built and John T. Boyle donated the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first pavilion. In 1900, the Lakeside Park bandstand was built as a gift

to the community from William McDermott. The bandstand was used as an illustration in 1959 in the Saturday Evening Post and remains today as a beloved city landmark. The park is the site of the Lakeside Park Lighthouse, the acknowledged symbol of the Fond du Lac community. The lighthouse was donated in the early 1930s. The structure, which measures 44 feet from the ground to the observation deck and an additional 12 feet to the top of the flashing light, was

opened to the public in July 1968. Lakeside Park attracts many families who enjoy the extensive playground equipment, train ride, petting zoo and other attractions. Three softball diamonds host games on weeknights and for weekend tournaments. The annual Walleye Weekend festival in June and the Fourth of July fireworks are among the many activities that make Lakeside Park a true destination.

Visual Arts

Mission Statement: Fond du Lac Visual Arts is a professional artists’ collaborative devoted to art awareness and education, to the development and enhancement of artists’ skills, and to strengthening the connection between the arts and commerce in Fond du Lac.

PURPOSE: The purpose of Fond du Lac Visual Arts is to create a membership base of area artists who would like to work together with other artists in a partnership capacity, to share the work, expense, effort, and time of making a profitable living in the visual art arena. The collaborative is not limited to profit, we also promote education, mentoring, and public awareness of the visual arts. Fond du Lac Visual Arts is here to help area artists succeed. Benefits of joining the Fond du Lac Visual Arts - Participation in group shows yearly - Solo exhibitions on rotation - Opportunities to curate shows and events. - Exposure of your art work to Fond du Lac and the growing arts community. - Opportunity to meet with other area artists. - Network with other galleries locally and throughout the state. - Opportunities to assist or present artist-in-residence programs.

MEMBERSHIP DUES: - Single membership to Fond du Lac Visual Arts is $10.00 per month or $120.00/year (nonrefundable), once applicants are approved by the Founding Members of Fond du Lac Visual Arts. original work on a CD. Please label each piece with your First and Last Name, Title, Medium, and Date created. - Include an Artist Statement and Resume’. - Provide complete address or any other information in order for FDL Visual Arts to reach you regarding membership. Community Presence: promote within the community; networking; become Area Commerce members. Artist-in-Residence Programs: supplement school art curriculum with visiting artists who will share their knowledge and talents. Notifications of regional and national art shows: send out to members all calls for artists; share info on other artist organizations; collaborate efforts to attend art fairs and shows. Mentoring: assist community members, artists, and students to create portfolios; share resources to help others succeed. Economic impact: change perception; bring in revenue to the community and local artists. Resource room: create a library for permanent collection books, tools, and equipment. “Community Forum”: create the Art Lounge...the place to be for every

artist in Fondy! “Public Arts”: partnership/sponsorship with the Fond du Lac Arts Council; have area artists and art groups create artwork that is designed to be placed around town (i.e.—painted bicycles for the bike race.) Scholarships: award scholarships to disadvantaged persons to attend art related events, classes, workshops, and events. Fond du Lac Visual Arts, partnered with the Fond du Lac Arts Council, is working to create awareness of the arts in the community and to promote community involvement at arts events.

GOVERNMENT Fond du Lac County is a political subdivision of the State of Wisconsin and is comprised of 21 towns, nine villages, and three cities. A 25-member Board of Supervisors represents the 25 supervisory districts throughout the county and establishes policy for operation of Fond du Lac County. Policies are administered and implemented by an elected county executive.

After census figures are released (every 10 years), county boards are required to draw up new district boundaries based on a uniform number of residents per district. New boundaries took effect in spring of 2012. County Board meetings are scheduled on the third Tuesday of each month in the Legislative Chambers of the City County Government Center, 160 S. Macy St.

FOND DU LAC The City of Fond du Lac operates with a council-manager form of government. There is a sevenmember City Council with each member elected to a two-year term of office. A key feature of this form is the separation of power. The City Council is a policy-making body, while the city manager performs administrative duties required for

operation of the city.

As part of its work, the City Council establishes policy, enacts ordinances, adopts the annual budget and appoints a city manager to oversee the administration of the city. Prior to adopting policies, the City Council solicits the advice of the city manager, various advisory boards and city departments in

addition to conducting its own study of the issues. The City Council also solicits input from citizens at its public meetings. Regular meetings are held at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. after June 1, 2013) on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the Legislative Chambers of the City County Government Center, 160 S. Macy St.

University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac is a freshman/sophomore campus of the University of Wisconsin, and offers courses that are a foundation for over 200 majors.

Academic offerings include day and evening credit courses, study skills workshops and college success courses. Classes are offered in traditional, online, accelerated and blended formats. More than ten bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees can be earned entirely on the UWFond du Lac campus from five different 4-year UW institutions. The park-like campus is composed of six buildings that surround a two-acre lake. The 60acre Gottfried Arboretum serves as

an outdoor classroom and provides recreational opportunities.

In 2012, the college enrolled 691 students. A $13 million expansion/ renovation project was completed in the fall of 2000 and transformed UW-Fond du Lac into a modern facility with new science labs and larger and brighter classrooms. A two-story University Center was added to the campus as part of the renovation project and includes a commons area that is popular with students and also serves as the setting for several community events. The University Center includes a new library, music suite, the 340-seat Prairie Theater, campus bookstore and cafeteria. The UW-Fond du Lac Founda-

tion offers a number of academic scholarships for new, continuing and returning adult students. Moraine Park Technical College was established in 1912 and is one of 16 technical colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System. OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENSE Age: Any person who has attained the age of 18 may marry if otherwise competent. If a person is between the ages of 16 and 18, the license will be issued only with the written consent of parents, guardian or custodian. If the parents are divorced, proof must be provided showing legal guardianship.

If one parent is deceased, a certified death certificate is needed. Proof of Age: Both parties are required to present a certified copy of their birth certificate from the state or county where the birth occurred. (Hospital birth certificates, baptismal certificates and state notifications of birth registration are not acceptable.) Residency: Application must be made in the county in which one or both parties have resided for at least 30 days. If both parties are residents of other states, application must be made in the county where the ceremony is to be held. If neither person has been a resident of any county for 30 days prior to applying, application must also be made in the county where the ceremony is to be held. Vaccination by a veterinarian against rabies of all dogs is required (Section 95.21 (2)) within 30 days after the dog reaches four months of age and revaccinated within one year after the initial vaccination. The minimum license fee for neutered males or spayed females is $3, upon presentation of evidence attesting to the same, and $8.00 for the unneutered male or unspayed female dog. These minimums may be supplemented by local municipal action. Multiple dog licenses are $35 for 12 or fewer dogs and $3 for each dog in excess of 12. Fond du Lac’s partnership with newspapers goes back nearly 150 years. The seeds for The Reporter of today were sown in 1856 with the founding of the weekly Fond du Lac Commonwealth. It became the Daily Commonwealth in 1870, the year considered the founding date for The Reporter. The Reporter nameplate came into existence in 1883, when L.A. Lange established the Daily Reporter. It was the first newspaper in Fond du Lac to secure a telegraph service. The first Linotype machine used in Fond du Lac County was purchased by the Reporter Printing Co. The Daily Reporter and the Daily Commonwealth remained competitors until 1926. As Henry Ford was instituting the eighthour workday and five-day work week, the two papers merged to form the Fond du Lac Commonwealth Reporter in facilities at 18 W. First St. The newspaper marked its century celebration in 1970 with the donation and dedication of an old-fashioned Daily Newspaper & Print Shop on the grounds of Fond du Lac’s historic Galloway House and Village.

In 1972, The Reporter was purchased by Thomson Newspapers. The name was shortened to the Fond du Lac Reporter during the 1970s, and later became simply The Reporter, reflecting the broader area of its circulation throughout Fond du Lac County and in portions of adjoining counties.

In 1977, the newspaper ended an era of “hot metal” production, discarding its Linotype machines and letterpress and moving into a new building at 33 W. Second St. There, a new, 45,000-copy-per-hour printing press brought The Reporter to the age of offset printing. Computerization came shortly after. Today’s editions of The Reporter are composed entirely on computer screens and sent to negatives which are, in turn, printed on the offset printing plates that go on the press. Gannett Co., the current owner, purchased The Reporter in July 2000.

Fond du Lac is strategically located and known for its proximity to Lake Winnebago, Horicon National Wildlife Refuge and the National Ice Age Reserve Unit. The area is very popular for water sports, hunting, hiking and more. Horicon National Wildlife Refuge — Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is located south of Fond du Lac and is worth a trip to witness waterfowl and its habitat, plus much more. Wild Goose State Trail — the Wild Goose State Trail runs from Fond du Lac in the north to Clyman in the south. The Wild Goose Trail is an ornithologist’s haven as the majority of the trail runs by the western edge of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge where thousands of birds live, and migratory waterfowl stop at on their annual flight south. Mascoutin Valley State Park Trail — the Mascoutin Valley State Trail is a 31-mile multi-purpose recreation trail extending from Fond du Lac to Berlin, Wisconsin. The first leg of the trail is located on the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad line between Fond du Lac and Ripon. From Ripon, the trail extends north to Berlin, a distance of 12 miles on the former Milwaukee Road line. Currently, there is no designated connection between these two sections of trail in the City of Ripon. In 2002, a trailhead parking lot was constructed at Rolling Meadows Drive in Fond du Lac. A trailhead parking lot is also located in Berlin. Another trailhead parking lot

is located on Locust Road, adjacent to the trail north of Ripon. Eisenbahn Trail, Eden to West Bend — traveling south from Fond du Lac, hikers and bikers can enjoy one of the area’s newest trails, the Eisenbahn State Trail, which has its start in Eden. The trail travels south through Campbellsport and then on to West Bend. The Department of Natural Resources entered into an agreement with Washington County to develop and maintain approximately 12 miles of the 24 miles of abandoned rail corridor on the former C& NW Rail Road rightof-way that extends from the City of West Bend, Washington County to Eden in Fond du Lac County. The Washington County trail segment extends from Rusco Road south of the City of West Bend north to the Washington/Fond du Lac county line. Kiekhaefer Park – located just northeast of Fond du Lac, an area for hiking, cross country skiing, walking and nature observation, Kiekhaefer Park is just three miles northeast of Fond du Lac, off Hwy. 151. Head north to Kiekhaefer Pkwy. This is a 120-acre park for hiking, biking, sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Groomed trails. Scenic overlooks of Lake Winnebago. Hobbs Woods — located three miles south of Fond du Lac off Hickory Road, Hobbs Woods is a 60acre county park devoted to hiking and nature study. Most of the park is thickly wooded, but several acres of prairie, planted in 1979-80, are coming along well. Parsons Creek carves a large ravine through the park, and harbors some naturally reproducing brook trout. About three miles of nature trails, which are keyed to a self-guiding brochure, wind through the park. Eldorado Marsh — Eldorado Marsh is located five miles west of the City of Fond du Lac, and consists of over 6,000 acres of state-owned land. A trail runs through the center of the marsh, permitting the CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

alive with migrating birds, including the famous Canada geese. The refuge covers 32,000 acres of ice age legacy, beginning as a lake then gouged out by glaciers and pushed southward. The land has been used as a wildlife refuge since 1943 and is part of the National Ice Age Reserve Unit. The many acres of grasslands and wetlands shelter more than 250 species of birds including geese, herons, egrets and many songbirds. The marsh is best known as a rest stop for over 200,000 migrating Canadian Geese during the spring and fall. The Wildlife Refuge is also home to a variety of upland game such as muskrats, deer and fox. Trails are open year round for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and wildlife observation. Waterfowl and non-waterfowl hunting allowed. Weekend naturalist programs are offered during the spring and fall at DNR offices. There are many “side trips” and explorations within the marsh. 387-2658. Henry Reuss Ice Age Visitor Center — a great way to explore Wisconsin’s glacial history is a visit to the Henry Reuss Ice Age Visitor Center, located just south of Dundee. Part of the Ice Age Trail, the Visitor Center, N2875 Highway 67, Campbellsport, provides educational information, including films, exhibits and panoramas about the glaciers that carved out Wisconsin; the glaciers in this part of the Kettle Moraine are specifically highlighted. Marsh Haven Nature Center – any visit to the Horicon Marsh should start at Marsh Haven Nature Center, located just east of Waupun on Highway 49. visitor to observe wildlife at close range. Deer, waterfowl, raccoons, muskrats, rabbits, songbirds and other wildlife are common. This marsh is heavily used by sportsmen hunting deer, geese, ducks and pheasants, and is also used for hiking and bird-watching. The south edge of the marsh can also be viewed by traversing the Mascoutin Trail. Lakeside Park West — this park is located west of the popular Lakeside Park, and accessed by taking Hwy. 45 north off Scott Street, approximately 1/4 mile. Look for “Lakeside Park West” sign on east side of road. Follow road east until it meets Lake Winnebago boat docks and launching area. Turn left and follow gravel road north until it ends at small parking area, the shore of Lake Winnebago. A secluded area adjacent to a marshy area with numerous trails that pass through both wooded areas and out in the open. Dog park also located here. Riggs Park, Ripon — this park is the most recent addition to the Fond du Lac County park system. At 300 acres, Riggs County Park is the county’s largest park. Purchased in 1998, the park is planned as a largely natural area with 180 acres of wetlands, 70 acres of native prairie restoration and about 50 acres of active recreation areas including trails, picnic areas, a shelter, sledding hill, bathhouse and man-made swimming lake. A master plan prepared for the park in 19981999 is guiding development of the property. Fond du Lac County Park Waupun — Waupun County Park is the second largest county park in the county at 103 acres. It is located at 825 County Trunk MMM, on the northwest edge of Waupun. The park contains a wooded 42 unit public campground, with electrical hookups, restrooms and showers. Other facilities include playground equipment, two open-air picnic shelters, one enclosed shelter and a baseball field. Rock River Country

Club, a golf course and restaurant, is located adjacent to the park. 9213135. Waupun Dog Park, Waupun — Waupun is pleased to offer an area for local dog owners to bring their dogs to run and play, as well as socialize with other dogs. Buttermilk Creek Park — located on South Park Avenue, Fond du Lac, the park has ample space for leisurely walks. It has a band shelter that hosts evening concerts Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. Tennis courts are available and there is a large hill for sledding in winter. Bathrooms and Noon Kiwanis Shelter located at the park. Fond du Lac County Aquatic Center — water park open in summer and containing water slides, showers, kids pool and wading pool. Taylor Park, Fond du Lac — located at the corner of South Hickory and Emma Streets, Fond du Lac, the park features a swimming pool and historic pavilion. Kettle Moraine State Forest — Kettle Moraine State Forest is located in the southeastern part of Fond du Lac County and is a 10,582-acre portion of the 27,725acre northern unit of Kettle Moraine

State Forest. Made up of geological formations caused by retreating glaciers, the forest is managed for forestry and outdoor recreation. Textbook examples of glacial landforms are scattered throughout the forest, such as drumlins, kames, eskers and kettles. The major recreational developments within the forest are located at Mauthe Lake south of New Prospect, and at Long Lake north of Dundee. Both have excellent camping and hiking facilities. Mauthe Lake offers electricity, trailer sites, tent camping, fireplaces, picnic tables, sanitary facilities and drinking water, while Long Lake offers all of the above except electricity. Attractions Little White School House — located in Ripon, this is home to the birthplace of the Republican Party. The Little White School House, located at 303 Blackburn St., became famous one legendary night in 1854 when a group of Whigs, Free Soldiers, and Democrats held a secret meeting to try to prevent the extension of slavery into the north. The famous landmark has been relocated and update and holds information regarding the famous meeting that took place long ago. It is a 12-room home, originally built in 1856 as an Indian fort and holds a rich history.
