Rustic meets elegant at Pioneer Creek Farm
SARAH RAZNER | USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin
LOMIRA - Nestled in the outskirts of Lomira is the rustic-yet-elegant Pioneer Creek Farm. The venue opened in 2016, when the parents of Devonne O'Gorman retired from running their farm.
Having previously worked for her parents, O’Gorman sought a new career. As she enjoyed wedding planning, she saw the now-closed farm as an opportunity to put those skills — and herself — to work.
Pioneer Creek Farm sits on over 80-acres of land. Surrounded by green hills and trees, a pond sits on the property with a newly-added deck overlooking it. At the farm’s heart is an old red hay barn. As one passes through the curtained entranced, one can’t help but notice a crystal-beaded chandelier hanging above tables for up to 200 guests.
Taking couples on a tour of the grounds is the first step for those looking to get married on the property. The expressions of the couple — particularly the groom— are what
O’Gorman says show her whether they will be booking. “It’s really funny, because I can usually tell if they’re going to book on the guys’ response. The fishing and scenery really draw them in,” she said. “I can usually tell from the girl if they get the awestruck look on their face.” Pioneer Creek Farms is open May through October, and, to secure a Saturday date, couples must book more than a year in advance. However, for weddings on Fridays, that CONTINUED ON PAGE 3>>

timeline drops to six months. A brunch option is also offered on Sundays, featuring mimosas and Bloody Mary’s, a plated or buffet brunch options for foods, such as eggs and potatoes, and appetizers. In addition to providing the venue for the wedding, Pioneer Creek Farm also allows couples to take engagement pictures on site. Following the wedding, it also offers couples a $100 gift certificate to use towards to a condo in Florida to use within a year of their wedding. Once the date is set, O’Gorman meets with the couple again a few weeks before the wedding to go over the layout, such as setup for tables and chairs for both the ceremony and reception.

“Working with brides has been really fun. They’re happy people,” said O’Gorman. “I enjoy watching the creativity of the brides. They can do it themselves or have a wedding planner, but each bride has their own touches.”
Those touches come to life the day of the wedding, when, at around noon the bride arrives with her bridesmaids and helpers to get ready in the provided bride’s room. Together, CONTINUED ON PAGE 9>>

“We saw an opportunity with the bakery for sale. We wanted to be able to take the existing business and expand it to provide a local bakery to Fond du Lac, along with the only local candy store,” said Laufer. “Unofficially we call ourselves ‘the sweetest place’ in Fond du Lac.”
FOND DU LAC - Step aside cake. A smorgasbord of desserts is taking over the wedding scene as a chosen sweet for brides and grooms. While cake had always been the go-to treat for weddings — even receiving its own segment of time at receptions — in recent years, other desserts have seen a rise in popularity, such as ice cream, candy and donuts.
The offerings of both donuts and candy provide a way for a bride and groom to meet a range of tastes in a unique way. “Donuts are a great alternative to cake,” said Laufer. “It’s cake, but it’s cake donuts.”
I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM…
Coming with the ability to be customized in multiple ways, customers can choose to have sprinkles and coconuts, as well as what flavors and icings they would like. For those who enjoy the tiered look of a cake, donuts can be stacked on cake stands, or laid out on a table or on a rack.
“People are looking outside the tradition cake box,” says Amie Leistikow, Wedding and Catering manager for Kelley Country Creamery. “They will keep some wedding traditions, but cake isn’t one of them if they truly don’t care for it. Social media is always popping up new ideas or trends and the multi-generational people that are getting married at all ages are looking for something different. The traditional wedding announcement of the wedding cake being cut and to have all guests to gather around is rarely seen anymore.”
“It gives everyone a little bit of everything,” he said. “The nice thing about that it’s a variety for your guests that you can get in regular cake, otherwise everything is yellow or marble.” For candy, Candyman on Pioneer has a wide a selection of treats available, from Toostie Rolls to Swedish Fish, Lemon Drops to 3 Musketeers, Candy Corn to Gummy Bears. Couples may choose as many types as they would like, and, based on the number of people attending, the correct amount of candy is ordered and presented at the reception in a candy bar, complete with glassware and scoops to be rented. An assortment of chocolates can also be added to the bar, depending on the wants to the couple.
Adding to this trend, Kelley Country Creamery, W5215 Fond du Lac County B, began offering wedding desserts in 2011. Named “Best Ice Cream in America” by “Good Morning America” in July 2013 and voted “Best Ice Cream Shop in Wisconsin” in 2010 by USA TODAY, the creamery presents six dessert options for brides and grooms: chocolate coffee cups, chocolate tulip cups, mini waffle bowls, diamond drops, mason jars and mini wedding cakes. For those who would like to still have a wedding cake, but with an ice cream spin, two-tiered ice cream cakes are also available. For couples who would still like a cake at their wedding, Kelley Country Creamery can create a two-tiered ice cream cake. Courtesy of Kelley Country Creamery.
Not confined to vanilla and chocolate, Kelley County Creamery has “over 350 traditional and unique premium ice cream flavors that can be used in any of the individual ice cream desserts,” said Leistikow. Customization is also offered, with couples having the ability to create a special flavor for the day; tailor desserts to the colors, decorations, venue and theme of the reception as well as the number of guests; and design the labels of mason jars. All elements are chosen through a tasting process, along with venue arrangements. “The bride and groom choose one of the six individual ice cream desserts that best reflects them, their venue or how they are celebrating their special day. Ice cream flavors are chosen by the couples’ favorites, but keep in mind their guests,” said Leistikow. “The bride and groom truly want to treat their guests to an eye appealing and delicious dessert to compliment
the wedding dinner. The ice cream dessert becomes a huge part of the dinner conversation.”
THE CANDY MAN CAN… Ice cream is not the only sweet treat de-throning cake. With the combined efforts of Fishy’s Bakery and Candyman on Pioneer, N6451 S. Pioneer Road, Fond du Lac, donuts and candy have also become an option for the soon-to-be-wed couple. In addition to offering cakes and cupcakes designed by award-winning cake decorators for weddings, candy was also brought into the mix when owners Bill Laufer and Tom Meurer took over management of Fishy’s Bakery in September 2016, in addition to donuts.

This ability to choose has been especially popular when it comes to theme weddings, more of which seem to “popping up” these days, according to Laufer. That aspect not only comes into play with the dessert, but also favors for the guests, where those, for example, at a baseball-themed wedding, could be treated to Big League Chew.

C.W. SMITH JEWELERS:
Providing jewelry, relationships to last a lifetime
SARAH RAZNER | USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin
NORTH FOND DU LAC - Located in a home on Wisconsin Avenue in North Fond du Lac, C.W. Smith Jewelers has been building relationships and bringing jewelry to customers around the world for 60 years under the slogan “Let our location be your savings.” In 1957, watchmaker Chuck Smith, or C.W. Smith, left his work in downtown Fond du Lac as a watchmaker to open his own business in his home, 603 Wisconsin Ave., North Fond du Lac. Due to his location and lack of overhead, he was able to offer customers a price lower than suggested retail. Having built relationships with customers over the years, it wasn’t long before they were coming to him and asking him for a diamond and on Valentine’s Day 1957, the store sold its first engagement ring. Today, diamonds make up 80 percent of the store, with approximately 200 rings available in the case — a large selection drawn not only from the immediate area, but from all over the state. With the internet at the staff’s finger tips, that number only grows. When it comes to helping couples purchase an engagement ring, C.W. Smith employees Jeanne Floyd and Ronda Weber have more than 30 years of experience in the field. Many times, couples will come in together, and with Floyd and Weber, go over the variety of rings available to them to find the desired ring and build a “wish list” of options. Years ago, ring shoppers would bring in a drawing of what they wanted, however, with the internet and websites like Pinterest, many times they bring in a picture. “With technology, we have the resource of online, which

A large percentage of the business is customization, says Floyd. At C.W. Smith, customers may alter the width, prongs, and size and shape of diamond to their liking. “He can decide what he’s comfortable spending. He does the fine tuning at the end so the gift is uniquely from him,” Floyd said. For those who would like to propose within a day, rings are available in the case to be purchased right away. However, a custom-made a ring takes approximately three weeks. After the proposal, C.W. Smith invites the couple to come back to make sure the ring fits correctly and to give it a cleaning. Having pride in their product, the business wants to ensure it keeps its beauty by offering free cleaning, steaming and inspection for a lifetime. “There is nothing that man makes more beautiful than clean jewelry,” said Floyd. In addition to engagement rings, the store also sells wedding rings. Options have expanded over the years when it comes to the rings for men, Weber and Floyd say. Rather than a basic band, pictures can now be engraved on them, such the antlers of a deer for the men who like hunting. Gifts for the wedding can also be purchased, such as a necklace or earrings for the bride’s attendants or a watch for the groom. In the case of “something borrowed,” C.W. Smith can create a piece of jewelry, such as pendant, from a family diamond.

Borrow these wedding planner tricks for a polished event on a budget Brandpoint news service
Planning your wedding is one of the most important management jobs you'll ever take on. A professional wedding planner could help make the day go smoothly, but you can also achieve the same effect yourself for less money. According to TheKnot.com, the average cost for a professional wedding planner is just under $2,000, but many couples don't have that kind of wiggle room in their budgets. In fact, 74 percent of couples didn't hire a wedding planner in 2015, the website says. You can still pull off a polished wedding if you borrow a few tactics from a wedding planner's bag of tricks.

MAKE THE RENTAL STORE YOUR PLAYGROUND
Professional wedding planners don't stockpile wedding items, they rent what they need to make a wedding run smoothly and look great. From tents and outdoor heaters, tables and chairs, to glassware, dishes, dance floors and décor, rental stores supply the wedding industry with the basics, luxuries and everything in between. When a professional planner rents items, he or she typically passes on the rental cost to the clients, on top of fees for professional services. You can rent the same items yourself through a rental CONTINUED ON PAGE 10>>

It is this aspect O’Gorman believes makes the experience at Pioneer Creek Farm unique. “I think it’s the fact that everyone is kind of here. They don’t have to go from one place to another; the in-between time everyone is here,” she said. “It has a relaxed feeling and closeness. It brings everyone
together and the rush is gone.” Once pictures are taken, guests move into the barn for the reception, where a meal is served, brought by the bride and groom. Following toasts and desserts, guests dance beneath the fairy lights as music from a DJ or a live band fills the space. While the evening wraps up at 11 p.m., for O’Gorman, a sense of pride lingers long after the newlyweds and their guests leave. “The thought that all of these people are starting their lives together here makes me happy,” said O’Gorman. "Working with rental companies is like being in a fantasyland," Minneapolis-based wedding professionals Matthew Trettel and Bruce Vassar, The Wedding Guys, recently said in an interview with Rental Management magazine. "There are so many endless possibilities, and the only thing holding you back is the event budget.
Even on the smallest budget, you can always enhance or elevate an event working with a rental company."

• The budget can be the most challenging aspect to manage, so be sure to talk with your partner about your budget before you sign any contracts. Set a budget and use a budgeting worksheet (readily available for free online) to help control costs. • Numerous types of planning helpers are available, from online worksheets to apps, books and old-fashioned paper planners. Find one that's easy for you to use and stick with it. Your planner should include a checklist with a timeline, and allow you to store all pertinent information, including estimates and contracts, in one place.
WORK YOUR CONNECTIONS
Professional wedding planners have networks of vendors to choose from. You can also network to find vendors for your wedding. Ask family, friends and co-workers for recommendations. Talk to any couples whose wedding you recently attended to see who they recommend. Another trick is to find one professional with whom you really connect - a photographer, florist or entertainer - and ask for referrals to other quality professionals he or she likes working with. Check out their websites and feedback on social media to get an idea of their work. Planning a wedding can be challenging and rewarding. With a few tricks borrowed from professional planners, such as renting what you need, you can create the wedding of your dreams on your realworld budget.
