'Every wedding matters' SOUTH HILLS:
SARAH RAZNER | USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin
FOND DU LAC - Despite holding multiple wedding celebrations every year, for the staff at South Hills Golf & Country Club, located at 1175 Fond du Lac, Ave., each one is significant and every facet is important. “We work alongside the bride and the groom to customize every wedding based on the details and make ourselves available every step of the way to ensure they are happy,” said Jackie Runge, South Hills’ Banquet and Membership manager. “Every couple is treated uniquely

The venue’s banquet facilities provide food and bar service coordination, offering seating to up to 280 guests and a full bar with staff included. To plan out each element of the event, couples meet with Runge to discuss particulars, such as layout for the room, timeline and, of course, food. Three months before the big day, the couple takes part in a tasting to choose their menu for the reception. As there is an on-site executive chef, the venue has the capability to offer a wide array of foods, although

the most popular dishes are spinach and bacon stuffed chicken breast and teriyaki salmon. If those on the guest list have dietary restrictions, with prior notice, all are accommodated by South Hills. A reception area is not all that South Hills offers soon-to-be newlyweds. To capture the day, the wedding party is encouraged to go onto the golf course and take photos among the club’s hills, trees and ponds, escorted via golf carts. If a couple wishes to be married on the course, South Hills provides the 10th tee for nuptials, with the ceremony fully coordinated the club’s event coordinator. Details, including a space for the wedding party to prepare for the wedding, audio equipment, a Surround Sound hookup for a pianist and a timeline, are carefully laid out to ensure all runs smoothly. In addition to being a venue for the day of the ceremony, South Hills is able to hold bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and gift openings for the couple as well. “We are a full banquet and can coordinate and host all events tied to the wedding,” said Runge. For couples who hold their reception on the site, there is no rental charge for the events.

Throughout the process, no detail surrounding the day is overlooked. “All elements are important, from lighting in the pictures, to the background during dinner,” said Runge. Along with the location and dedication of the staff, it is this that Runge believes makes the South Hills’ experience unique, as encapsulated in a favorite sentence of hers from the website. “‘From the first inspiration to the last

A GIFT OF LOVE; Local couple asks wedding gifts to be donated to community organizations SARAH RAZNER | USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin
FOND DU LAC - While many newlywed couples receive gifts to start their shared future, one local couple asked for gifts to be donated to the benefit the future of others in the community. Alison and Matt of Fond du Lac met three years ago, and were engaged after two years of dating. With the date of the wedding set for Dec. 3, 2016, the couple began planning the other aspects around it, such as venue, guest list and, of course, what to register for. As Alison and Matt discussed what they should ask their guests for, they found that they were not in need of much. “We had both lived on our own, so we already had most things,” Alison said. A solution presented itself in inspiration from the month of their wedding, December, a time when a focus is put on giving and helping others. While both say the idea was the other’s, Matt and Alison decided to -- rather than to ask for more of what they already had -- give to those who did not have enough. Seeking places to donate to, the couple reached out to two local organizations: Solutions Center and the Fond du Lac Salvation Army. Having experience working at the Solutions Center, the couple knew that the organization provided 24-hour shelter, housing and safety to those face domestic abuse and homelessness while helping those throughout the community get back on their feet. The Salvation Army, known during the

holiday season for their Red Kettle Campaign and gift and food collections, was chosen because of its work in the community, providing food, clothing, shelter and multiple forms of assistance to those in need. For both organizations, while people had gifts donated for other occasions, like birthdays, this was the first time that a couple had offered to give their wedding gifts. The act surprised and moved them. “It’s a tremendous act of kindness from a tremendous couple,” said Connie Millard, Community Resource Development director for the Fond du Lac Salvation Army. “Our reaction to Alison and Matt reaching out to us was awe-inspiring and one of selflessness that they thought of our clients and the community during a special time in their lives,” said Kathie Docter, Marketing and Development assistant for the Solutions Center of Fond du Lac. Originally thinking of asking guests to bring a toy or gift for a child, Alison and Matt worked with both organizations to compile a list of other items for people to donate based on what was needed most. Ideas included board games, pajamas, socks, books and crock pots. With that array of suggestions, the couple sent out an invitation to guests reading: “Christmas is a reason to be joyful, to believe; a reason to be grateful for the blessings we’ve received. In lieu of a gift, we ask that you bring an unwrapped gift for a family in need in Fond du Lac County … The gifts will

be donated to Salvation Army and Solutions Center in Fond du Lac in spirit of the holiday season.” Weeks later, with more than 170 guests in attendance, Matt and Alison married at Heidel House Resort and Spa in Green Lake. Although the snow came a day later than they had thought, Alison said it was “still really perfect.” “We didn’t have any real snags,” Matt added. “Everyone had a good time.” Early in the festivities, the couple noticed that the donation table was already overflowing. “We were absolutely surprised by the amount of donations,” said Alison. “People didn’t only bring one thing. They brought five games. Five pairs of pajamas. It was nice to see so much generosity from family and friends.” Throughout the night, Matt and Alison received congratulations from their guests, and well as praise for their act. It is recognition that they were and still are reluctant to accept. “We didn’t do it all,” Matt said. “We had an idea and with the people who came it did it. It was group effort.” Of all the questions asked of the newlyweds that night, not one was of why chose to donate the gifts. In fact, the most common was how they were going to get them home. Matt’s mother volunteer to help transport the donations back to Fond du Lac, and once there, they sorted them to make sure each organization would get an equal amount of items, before delivering. The task took two hours, with Salvation Army and the Solutions Center each receiving a pickup truck full to the brim with donations. “We were simply overwhelmed, in the most exciting and amazing way,” said Docter, of the Solutions Center staff’s reaction when the gifts were delivered. “For dozens of families to benefit from Alison and Matt’s unique gift of love for the community is truly an inspiration.” It was a feeling mirrored over at Salvation Army. “The outpouring of generosity had us in

awe. And every gift was perfect — looking at them, it was easy to imagine the joy each would bring and the difference each gift would make,” said Millard. For Alison and Matt, the gratitude of each organization has left an impact. “We were excited that so many people would benefit from what we delivered,” Alison said. “We’re glad we’re fortunate enough to help so many families.” The newlyweds have also found thankfulness in the experience, as it has allowed them to grow their relationship further. “We had to work together a lot on it. It took lots of communication to set up. We make a good team that way,” Aliso* said. Matt agreed. “It helped us to appreciate each other more.”

BECKY’S COTTAGE FLORAL:
Flowers with a personal touch
SARAH RAZNER | USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin
FOND DU LAC - After 20 years in the floral industry, Becky Butler, owner of Becky’s Cottage Floral, 435 W. Scott St., Fond du Lac, knows what it takes to craft beautiful wedding flowers. Opening 12 years ago, flowers -- along with its offering of unique homemade crafts and trinkets -- have been a staple of Becky’s Cottage Floral. Butler’s attention-to-detail is evident in all aspects of the store, but particularly in her bridal flowers. When working with a couple, Butler’s first step is to sit down with them for a consultation to discuss different floral options. “I want to get into their heads, to get a visualization of who they are and what type of flowers they want. It helps me produce the bouquet,” she said. For those who bring in photos with what they have in mind, Butler works to accommodate their wishes along with their budget and the time of the season. While each season has its popular flower and colors, such as sunflowers and autumn-toned roses in fall, or pink tulips and

Gerbera daisies in spring, some may not be available outside those months. Others may exceed the amount a pair wants to spend. To meet their needs, she will suggest similar flowers, customizing the bouquet. Before the consultation is done, Butler has already designed the bouquet for them. “I want to build their confidence that they’re going to have something they enjoy,” she said. Between the consultation and the event, Butler goes to work creating the bouquets, never making two alike. Along with the highquality flowers and unique color mixes, Butler tailors the bouquets to location and theme to make them stand out. For a sea shell-themed wedding taking place on the shores of Lake Michigan, she incorporated star fish and shells into the design. In other arrangements, she has added items like pearls and rhinestones. “It gives the flowers a personal touch,” she said. On the day of the wedding, Butler offers services including delivery to the wedding venue and reception, and setup. She also provides a “servicing” option for those who would like help pinning on
boutonnieres and corsages. When asked of her favorite part of the entire process, Butler says she finds it in the relationship between her and the couple. “What I enjoy most is working one on one with the couple and creating something
beautiful together that is going to be special. That’s the fun part for me.” For more information about Becky’s Cottage Floral, call 920-922-5501, visit beckyscottagefloral.com or visit the store’s Facebook page.
