WIAA adds fifth division for postseason The Reporter Staff

Generate more studentathlete opportunities? Generate interest? Generate money? Generate a more balanced State basketball tournament? Whatever the intent of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and whatever the outcome, member schools will play a fivedivision state boys and girls basketball tournament for the first time this season. The WIAA tinkers with conference alignments every so often in an ef fort to provide schools with better fits as far as enrollments and competitive balance. The jostling occurs in an effort to achieve that balance mostly in football, basketball or both. Now, after about two decades of playing a four-division state basketball tournament, the WIAA has decided to go to five divisions. The State tour nament expanded in 1991 from Class A, B and C to Division 1 through 4. The new model also means a Division 5 field of four teams gets added this season, and Division 1 goes from having eight qualifiers in Madison to only four. Here’s what some area coaches thought of the new plan:

Adam Zakos, FdL boys

“I think they tried to fix the whole public-private school debate by doing that, and they’re not really fixing it. “With ‘Super Tuesday’ (sectionals) you’re going to have to turn around (if your team qualifies) and get everything straightened out for the Friday games, rooms for the teams and all that. “Teams may lose some fans, especially the teams

It’s fairly reasonable. We’re a smaller school, and only time will tell how the regionals and sectionals will shape up on a year-to-year basis.”

Gary Kuehl, NFdL girls

“Going from (Division) 2 to 3 is more of a realistic spot for us. It’s probably where we belong with a lot of the 3s. When you are Division 2 with about 400 kids in your high school, playing teams with 5, 600 kids makes a big difference. We’ll still be playing good programs. … Sometimes the smaller schools are some of the tougher programs.”

THE REPORTER FILE PHOTO

The Markesan High School girls basketball team finished second at the 2008 WIAA Division 3 state tournament in Madison. Markesan moves to Division 4 this season as the WIAA adds a fifth division for its girls and boys postseason tournaments.

WIAA HOOPS Here are where the 16 area teams line up in the new WIAA five-division alignment: DIVISION 1 — Fond du Lac DIVISION 2 — Waupun, Kewaskum DIVISION 3 — New Holstein, Lomira, Mayville, North Fond du Lac, Ripon, Campbellsport, St. Lawrence, WLA DIVISION 4 — Laconia, Markesan, St. Mary’s Springs DIVISION 5 — Central Wisconsin Christian, Oakfield that have to travel longer distances. Also, some of the best games in the state will be played in the sectional final and super sectional, before Friday’s State tournament. “I’m happy for the Division 5 schools, who are going to get a chance to play at the State tournament, but for the Division 1 schools I don’t like it and don’t know of any Division 1 coaches who do.”

Doug Follis, Fondy girls

“Personally, I don’t like that. The reasoning was to get more kids (State tournament) opportunities. But taking away four Division 1’s and putting in four Division 5 teams … I don’t see the more opportunities. “It’s the same number of kids for the most part, and some of the smaller schools might not have 15 players on their rosters, so it may not even be the same amount of kids getting the opportunity. “The other thing I don’t like is the teams that are Division 2, allowing them to come up to Division 1. You’re already limiting Division 1 teams (by making it more difficult to get to State). And there may not be a lot of (Division 2 enrollment) teams that do it, but it’s almost a double jeopardy.”

Kyle Krueger, Springs boys

“I know our region is loaded with Oostburg and Cedar Grove Belgium. It’s going to be real difficult. Obviously, if

you go to five divisions it increases your odds of moving on. I’m glad they didn’t use any type of multiplier for private schools. I didn’t like the rationale behind it.” On the issue that private schools are dominating certain divisions: “I don’t think it solves (it) at all — not at all. If nothing else, maybe it makes it worse. Maybe it makes it easier for those top-notch private schools. I don’t think the five-division plan helps those perceived situations.”

Jeremiah Hoffmann, Winn. Lutheran boys

“I guess it’s not the end of the world. We’re certainly going to be at the bottom of Division 3 (in enrollment) with the change. I think whether you ask a private school coach or a public school coach is going to determine your answer. I’m in the opinion if it’s not broke, don’t fix it, and I don’t think it was broke. They didn’t come up with something crazy.

“I don’t really have an opinion ... whatever they think is best is fine with me. I like the opportunity to have more teams get to State. I think the five division (plan) is a little bit better.”

Tom King, Laconia boys

“I don’t know, I’ve got mixed feelings about it. Sometimes I think part of me (says), ‘We don’t need to go in that direction; you don’t water down the tour nament.’ The flip side (is that it’s) probably a fairer way to go. ... It could have stayed the way it was, and I would have been fine with it.”

Tyler Witkowski, Lomira boys

“I don’t quite understand the small D1s (issues). I don’t know what they tried to accomplish or if they actually did. The private schools are still going to be good, and they’re still going to win. “... [Division 1 teams] have the talent (and) they have the basketball players. To take away four of their teams, if that’s fair or not, I’m not sure. In the grand scheme of things they play at a pretty high, intense level, D1 does. D3 plays hard, but there’s obviously a difference in talent.”

Where there’s ‘Hope’ for Fondy Cardinals, Smit Veteran Cardinals team should be better behind Bonlander BY DOUG WHITELEY The Reporter

The Fond du Lac Cardinals girls basketball team will feature a returning conference player of the year and three other returning varsity players who played a good deal of ball in AAU tournaments over the summer. That sure can’t hurt the Cardinals chances for success. Hope Bonlander is the Fox Valley Association’s returning player of the year, and she and returning varsity players Elizabeth Osbor n, Cydney Head and Karson Stacey all played AAU ball, so there should not be a lack of experience. “I think we should definitely be better than we were last year,” Bonlander said. “We have some good underclassmen coming up. We’ve been looking pretty good in our scrimmages after school. I’m excited for this year; (I) think we can do pretty good.” It all starts with Bonlander, who recently signed her letter of intent to play Division II college ball for Southwest Minnesota State next season. “She puts a ton of time in on it,” said Fondy coach Doug Follis. “She’s always in the gym working on the

I don’t see her going down at all. I see her with just as good of a chance as anybody (to earn player of the year).” Bonlander scored about 14 points a game with 6.3 rebounds last year and shot better than 40 percent from beyond the 3point arc. She’s a threeyear varsity starter for Fondy. With all that she’s got on her basketball resume already, she said she’s not all that concer ned with defending her title. “I guess I’m not really thinking about that,” said Bonlander, who played with the Fox Valley Hustle AAU team out

Three things will make this year’s Fond du Lac boys basketball team better, according to coach Adam Zakos. The Cardinals must defend the ball better to keep dribblers from infiltrating the lane. Being a team on the smaller side, they must rebound as a team on both offense and defense. And they have to shoot with Tony Smit more confidence and, ultimately, more success. One returning player who should be exceptional at the first of those missions — and solid at all three — will be senior point guard Tony Smit. Smit is a returning all-conference secondteam player who was also on the seven-member all-defensive team as voted by Fox Valley Association coaches. “Tony’s definitely one of the best point guards in the state,” said Fondy coach Adam Zakos. “I think that he is a contin-

Large senior class leads Springs BY MICHAEL ROGERS The Reporter

The St. Mary’s Springs girls basketball team took its first step forward last year under head coach Mitch Redig. This season, the Ledgers want to take the next step into the top half of the Flyway. Last season’s 11-12 team was comprised mostly of juniors, and this time around the eight seniors have Redig expecting good things. “Last year was a step in the right direction. My first year we were 3-18; last year we were 11-12,” Redig said. “We lost some close games; played Lomira competiMegan Shea tive twice. Our team, which consisted mostly of juniors gained some valuable experience.” “This year we have a lot of seniors, and we all work really well together,” Jenna Shea said. Springs doesn’t lose many players from last year, but the Ledgers do need to replace some big numbers from the team’s best player. Amber Lisowe led the team with 13.6 points, and she averaged 5.8 rebounds despite being just 5-foot-6. Trying to find her replacement is the most important thing for Springs in the early going. “It will be tough to replace her, but I think with some of us seniors we’ll take the place of her points,” Megan Shea said. “It will be more of a team effort to take her points. But I think we can do it.” Both Sheas — they are twins — and Redig named Katie Moses as the player most likely to take up the scoring slack.

Ledgers have small roster, huge hearts BY DOUG WHITELEY

SPRINGS BOYS

The St. Mary’s Springs boys basketball team is dealing with a small squad. The varsity squad has just 10 players, and adding the 10 freshmen and nine junior varsity players barely would qualify for a platoon. The Ledgers won’t have big numbers or big firepower, but what they may have is a better understanding of their role in striving for a common goal. “We have a bunch of Austin Good good kids, and they’ll work hard,” said Springs coach Kyle Krueger. “We’re talking about being a band of brothers and not letting anything come in between our team.” Krueger did not care to dwell on last season, one in which Springs went 4-18 overall, but he said there were some difficulties that extended beyond shots and rebounds, including a multitude of injuries that certainly didn’t help in a 3-11 Flyway Conference mark. “I think we definitely had more talent than four wins,” the coach said. “Going back and saying this won’t happen again, my main focus is attitude and work ethic. From year to year you can’t always control your talent, but hopefully you can be more positive and have good team chemistry.” This year’s team does-

Springs’ Jenna Shea, above, and twin sister Megan are part of an eight-member senior group on the girls basketball team. The twins earned all-conference honorable mention last season.

SPRINGS GIRLS Coach: Mitch Redig (Third season, 14-30) 2009-10 Record: 11-12, 6-8 Varsity players: Seniors — Jenna Shea (5-5); Megan Shea (5-5); Andrea Beres (5-7); Jamie Birschbach (5-3); Katie Moses (5-7); Catherine Richardson (5-5); Katie Spannbauer (5-5); Kayla Chatterton (5-11). Juniors — Elizabeth Krueger (5-7); Taylor Cruz (5-4); Natalie Arenz (5-5); Mary Lou Moul (5-9). “I think Katie Moses is going to have a good scoring season,” Megan Shea said. “She’s a really good shooter, she can get her shot off pretty quick, and she makes most of her shots.” Moses scored 106 total points in 23 games last year. Redig added that

he’d like to see both Sheas — Jenna averaged almost 8 a game — bump up their scoring average as well. They’ll join Moses in the starting backcourt, with Jamie Birschbach coming off the bench, but replacing Lisowe’s rebounding may be just as tough. Andrea Beres (5-7) started much of last season. Kayla Chatterton is the tallest player on the team at 5-11, and Katie Spannbauer and Catherine Richardson will all be competing for the two starting frontcourt spots. The post play is a question mark, but team defense is not. “I think we have very good ball handlers; we work very well on defense talking to each other and communicating,” Jenna Shea said. “I think that will help us out in the

long run.” Redig is well aware of his team’s limitations. “Obviously replacing Amber is a big question mark. We don’t know who’s going to step up. Only one girl is over 5-9 so our post play, interior play is a huge question mark, and obviously who will do the scoring is something we need to figure out.” But the third-year coach is still excited about the possibilities with a veteran club. “I’m looking at this team, with the experience and the work this summer, (and) we’re looking for a top three finish in the conference,” he said. “WLA, Lomira, KML are the top tier, we’re hopefully in the mix with those top teams. We’re really focusing on improving every day.”

n’t have outlandish expectations as far as wins, but it does have a way it wants to go about its business. “I would like for our team to come into the year with a good attitude and not be sore about what happened last year,” said senior Austin Good. “It’s a whole new season and a good group of guys. We have young guys who can step up. It might be a little bit of a rebuilding year, but with the young talent we have we can do some good things.” Another senior, Dillon Wiese, who is expected by Krueger to score and defend inside, said the thing he wants to do this season is provide leadership for a team with four juniors and three sophomores. “Me personally, I just want to be a leader on the court, being one of three seniors,” Wiese said. “The seniors have to be good leaders and help the younger guys since we’ve had a year in our system that we run.” Jacob Balson is the third senior for Springs. He played just a bit last season, but can shoot the ball, Krueger said.

20-20 seasons propel Vikings BY MICHAEL ROGERS The Reporter

The first two years with Scott Herrewig as head coach of the Winnebago Lutheran Academy girls basketball team have been mostly successful. The pair of 20-win seasons are the only two in the program’s history. There’s only been one blot on the resume. Lomira and WLA have split four re gular-season games during that time, but the Lions have knocked WLA out of regional competition both years. It’s something that bothers the Vikings players. “I think we have a lot more to strive for,” WLA senior Kylie McArthur said. “We lost the last two years to Lomira. This is kind of our last shot at it to make our point and end with a bang.” Fortunately, or unfortunately, Lomira isn’t in WLA’s regional this year, but the two will see each other twice in F lyway play, and those two matchups could determine the league title. And WLA is ready for the challenge. Despite graduating Steph Kramer, — who played bigger than her 5-foot-7 frame and was the competitive engine of the team — three starters return, a fourth starter was the sixth man last year, and there is speed to burn. “It’s going to hurt a little bit, but we have strong post players and tall ones,” forward Katelyn Kuehl said. “We have a lot of quickness and speed to make up for some of that (loss).” Her rewig isn’t sure how well they’ll replace Kramer, but he expects good things from Megan Tews, a 6-footer, as well as fellow seniors Hannah Freiberg and Courtney

Kuehl averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds and almost 3 steals per game last year. “I think she’s the second best all-around player (in the Flyway), she’s that good,” Herrewig said. “She can shoot from the outside, she’s a longer, quicker athlete than most you find at 510. What held Katelyn back was perhaps just being unsure of how much she can do.” Kuehl said she worked on her jump shot and ball handling among other things during the summer. Kylie McArthur is another tall, but very fast player. She usually provides the team solid defense. “We stress defense a lot more than offense,” said McArthur, adding that ball pressure and weakside defense is always important. “Defense wins games in our view.” The other retur ning starter is Lexi Herrewig, a junior point guard. Coach Her rewig said she’s the best 3-point shooter on the team, and he is looking for more long-distance shots from his daughter. The player he has the most hopes for is Molly Sippel, a reserve last year

She can score inside with jump shooting, and she loves to play, so I expect big things from Molly.” Chelsea Abler will get minutes off the bench as a wing player, while juniors Erin Isaksson and Sarah Neumann will be back-ups at the guard positions. With speed to burn and talent all over the court, there is reason for Herrewig to be optimistic. The thing he said he needs is for a large group of seniors to take on a leadership role and a determination to get over the regional playoff hurdle.

“Our girls, and I don’t know if it’s just g reat parenting, or just good Christian girls, but often times you find them as nice girls,” Coach Herrewig said. “We need girls that are not usually vocal to, at times, be vocal and girls who love to play develop a chemistry amongst themselves (to) make that a team thing.” Kuehl said even with so many veterans the team needs to keep getting better throughout the season. “It’s going to be important to stay focused every practice, everyone give it their all and improve every day,” Kuehl said, “and play as a team because basketball is a team game.”

PAGE 9

The Winnebago Lutheran Academy boys basketball team had the 2009-10 season it was dreaming of. All the veteran leadership and talent paid off with a conference title — its first in 16 years — a regional title — its first in nine years — and if not for the indestructible force known as Racine St. Catherine’s, WLA may have been playing at the Kohl Center. Three consecutive overtime tournament wins gave WLA quite a memory. But now a whole new group is in charge Chris Stollfus of making sure it doesn’t become a distant memory. “We had a lot of fun. As a team it was very exciting to make it as far as we did,” WLA coach Jeremiah Hoffmann said. “We were disappointed we couldn’t get one more win and get down to Madison. I think it certainly helps bring an added energy to all of our kids. There was a great attitude and work ethic in the offseason.” There needed to be a lot of work because the seven graduated seniors from last year did basically everything for the team that went 24-3. You can throw out last year’s stat sheet when predicting this season. The most impressive stat from a returning player is the one rebound that Ian Zahn averaged.

WLA BOYS Coach: Jeremiah Hoffmann (Third season, 38-11) 2009-10 Record: 24-3, 14-0 Varsity players: Seniors — Chris Stollfus (6-1); Ian Zahn (6-1); Mike Wagner (5-11); David Kell (6-3); Mavric Otterstatter (6-2); Lucas Callies (6-4); Jordan Stroede (5-11). Juniors — Caleb Konen (5-11); Aaron Calkins (6-1); Matt Barenz (6-0); Bret Skaer (6-5); DJ Laduha (6-2). The seven returning players scored a total of 96 points, so finding a new go-to guy will be a challenge. “I think after a few games we’ll find out,” WLA guard Chris Stollfus said. “It will take a little bit, (but) we’ll find out who can score. “Defense is going to win us games,” he added. Don’t think that the only thing the current Vikings got last year were splinters. It was also a time for learning. “They taught us everything in practice,” Zahn said. “We played hard in practices; practices were like games. It got us tough and really made us work on the little things each and every day.” He added that they learned how much effort it took to succeed. “In the overtime games, they really left it on the floor,” Zahn said. “It was truly spectacular how much they gave it every game.”

Healthy Orioles eager to fly high Senior trio to lead BY PAUL KEUP The Reporter

Things are looking up for the North Fond du Lac High School boys basketball team in 201011. The Orioles finished 5-18 last season, when leading scorer Dylan Wodsedalek missed most of the campaign with a shoulder injury, but they are hoping for a healthy and more successful season. “We’ve got some fairly high expectations,” said North Fond du Lac coach Pat Lloyd, who enters his second full season. “We have a lot of seniors back; we have nine seniors coming back. Most of them played a lot of minutes last year. They’ve matured as individuals and as players. We expect to be pretty competitive this season.” Wodsedalek (12 ppg, 6 rpg, 3 apg) leads the senior class that also boasts fellow guard Travis White, point guard Jarrod Marose, and post players Alec Seidl, Taylor Noble and Jon Schalk. The Orioles look to make a push up from the fourth-place Flyway finish predicted by the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook. “Everyone is starting to show we have a team that could possibly win a championship,” White said. “There is no question about how hard they work, but I don’t think they’ll have any problem. “I would say (we) should be competitive for a conference championship. … We’ve grown that bond, and we should be able to take that out on the court.” The Orioles aren’t a one-man team, but their success will depend on staying healthy — especially Wodsedalek. He separated his left shoulder in a game

I remember a lot of pain. It hurt like a son of a gun. I don’t want to go through that again, that’s for sure.” He still wears a brace — per his mother’s wishes — and although it’s restricting he won’t let it harness the team’s goals to finish at, or near, the top of the Flyway standings. “(Our strengths are our) experience and the way we gel and know each other,” Wodsedalek said. “We have a lot of seniors on the team this year. We’ve been playing with each other since (about) fourth grade or whatever. “We’re all a pretty tight g roup, and we have an understanding of how each other plays. That’s going to be one of our strong points.” White and Wodsedalek played on the Wisconsin Blizzard AAU team out of Appleton in the summer, and they found success and improvement. “(Travis’) game has really picked up,” Lloyd said. “His shot has gotten

Gary Kuehl’s expectations for his North Fond du Lac High School girls basketball team are a bit up in the air right now. “We are replacing a good portion of our team,” Kuehl said. “We return three seniors, which we hope to rely on to get us through the early part of the season. I look for Yolanda the newHayes-Barnes comers to get varsity experience, and it will be interesting to see how we develop.” Those three senior starters are guard Monica Soyk, forward Yolanda Hayes-Barnes and forward Sam Sales. “(Yolanda) is a good inside player and very athletic,” Kuehl said of Hayes-Barnes, who averaged 8.9 points and 3.6 rebounds per game last season. “She’s usually the best athlete on the floor. She gives us experience in the inside game, and she has improved her shot over the last couple years. She gives us that quickness that causes a lot of problems.” Sales joins HayesBarnes in the post, and Kuehl said she “has good size inside. She has really improved her game on the outside end, and she gives us an inside-outside threat.” Soyk returns as a starting guard, and she and her classmates are ready to lead the younger Orioles. “Obviously, it’s not an

He’s shown some signs he can

be a very good scorer for us.” The Orioles also brought up 5-10 freshman Colton Krupp. “He’s kind of just getting familiar,” Lloyd said. “I feel like Colton will be in the rotation, earning more minutes as the year goes on. I see some good things happening there in the future, too.” Lloyd could use a rotation that goes as many as nine deep, and that will help the Orioles fly up the court more often. “I see us being a little more up-tempo,” Marose said. “We worked that way this summer. We didn’t have many set plays, and we tried to push the ball more instead of halfcourt offense.”

Once they get into it, it takes some of the pressure off us.” Kuehl said Merry Weber is the top candidate for the starting point guard spot, and the fifth starting spot could go to any of the following guards: Gretchen Stutz, Hannah Nelson, Sierra Giebel and Jenna Goldapske. Nicole Seidl, a 6-foot sophomore, also is expected to be part of the rotation, and Nakeeta Giebel is another senior. “With losing two senior starters and graduating six seniors, we’re taking time in practice to get everyone up to speed,” Kuehl said. “We’re getting those kids that don’t have experience or the knowledge of how fast the game can be played at this level. … It will take time and experience.”

team,” Flood said. “She shoots the ball real well. … We always know what we’re going to get from Natalie — 100 percent.” Emily Neitzel averaged 9.7 points in the Flyway and also was first-team all-conference. “Emily is gifted with a lot of athleticism, and along with that she has quite a bit of basketball IQ. She has the task of guarding the other team’s best player. She is a real defensive stopper.”

Allison Neitzel earned second-team Flyway honors last season with 8.4 points per game. “Allison is the person who does all the dirty jobs — she rebounds, she battles underneath for boards. All the jobs no one else likes, she does, and she enjoys doing them. She keeps us together.” Incoming junior Erin Connell ear ned honorable mention with 7.4 points per game in league play last season,

but she injured her knee in August. Her targeted retur n date is Feb. 28, which is her birthday. “She made it a goal to get back this season,” Flood said. “I’m very confident, with the work ethic she’s shown, that she will get back this season.” WLA returns secondteam F lyway player Katelyn Kuehl along with honorable mention players Molly Sippel and Lexi Herrewig. The teams have developed an intense on-court rivalry in the past few seasons. “It seems like it’s one of those rivalries,” Flood said. “Whoever wins, the winner will definitely earn it. Neither team is going to roll over and give them the victory. Both teams guard well. With that combination … you can anticipate a dog-fight. “… When Lomira and WLA go out there, it seems to be quite a battle.” Other teams will certainly battle for the league title, though. “It may be one of those years (with) five teams that can beat each other on any given night,” WLA coach Scott Herrewig said. “They really do have potential to give teams some problems. I think the conference will be strong.” Laconia returns guard Brittany Scheberl, guard Anna Smit and post play-

new people, and we have a very young team. … As a team we can do well.” The team’s identity is a work in progress. The Orioles aren’t sure if their pieces will fit together better as a halfcourt or full-court team. “I’m not really sure yet,” Kuehl said. “We have

some good team speed and athleticism. Given some time, I think we can be a full-court team. Early on, we’re trying to be a defensive team to adapt to the half-court and limit points on the other end.” One thing the veteran Orioles know is that defense is the top priority

with Kuehl. “He always has high expectations of our defense,” Soyk said. “Defense is always No. 1 with him. We work on team defense with a lot of help and cutting off drivers — but help has to be there. He always stresses defense.” The Orioles finished 7-

Jake Flood is 1-for-1 as head coach in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference after he led the Lomira High School girls basketball team to the league title last season. But he’s the first one to pass credit to for mer coach Aaron Olson and, of course, the players. “I think a lot goes to what the program had set up already,” F lood said. “I was really the only new piece to the puzzle. “The girls deserve the credit for what we did last year; the kids were the ones who made it go. That’s kind of how that works.” Lomira won the title with a 13-1 record, with its lone loss coming to Winnebago Lutheran. WLA was second at 122, and the rivals are expected to be among the top contenders again this season. The Lions graduated Kelsey Weiglein (6.8 ppg), but they retur n three junior starters who averaged at least 8.4 points per game — the Neitzel triplets. Natalie Neitzel — the 2009-10 Flyway Player of the Year — averaged 13.1 points per game in league play as a sophomore last season, finishing only behind Mayville junior Danielle Case (15 ppg). “Natalie is our floor general; she leads the

We have a lot of talent, but it’s a matter of putting it all together.” The Spartans also will have Darian Grosskreuz, Mariah Marchant, Paige Smith and Katelyn Dins in the rotation. “Athleticism is one of our strengths,” Wiese said. “We have good athletes from top to bottom, from guards to center. … We really have a lot of range from the 1-5 positions. The centers can step back and hit threes, which can really spread the floor. … We have a lot of threats to put the ball in the hole.” Kettle Moraine Lutheran returns second-team F lyway player Laura Zeamer, and North Fond du Lac returns secondteamer Yolanda HayesBarnes. “The conference race will still go through Lomira,” North Fondy coach Gary Kuehl said. “They retur n pretty much most of their team, and they won it last year. WLA lost some key players, but they will be tough. Laconia and Kettle Moraine Lutheran also will be tough. … I see them as the teams to beat to get in the upper half.” 16 overall last season, including 5-9 in the Flyway for sixth place. “Once we get through a couple weeks, we’ll talk about some goals and look at some things,” Kuehl said. “… We haven’t quite gotten to that point yet. Laconia, Omro favored to win Flyway BY MICHAEL ROGERS The Reporter

The Laconia High School boys basketball team has all the ingredients for a conference championship. The problem for the Spartans is that Omro has the same ingredients. So who will cook up a Flyway title this year? Most of the Flyway coaches stuck with Laconia, mostly because they knew more about the team from Rosendale, but coach Tom King was impressed the one time he saw the Foxes this summer. “They are as good as any team I’ve seen in the last number of years in the Flyway; they are good,” King said. “They are going to play with a lot of energy, very athletic, they can push the ball. They’re a tough matchup for anyone.” The two teams are very similar. Both teams return five starters. Laconia has a loaded backcourt with forwards who play their role. Omro has forwards who can beat the opponent, while the guards do the job of complementing. Laconia will likely look to Zach DeBoer, coming off of surgery to repair his right labrum, to carry the team in important situations. DeBoer averaged more than 14 points a game and showed his long range despite playing with a bad shooting shoulder most of the year. He’s joined by Sam Mattheis, a lightning-quick point guard, who is also deadly from outside. Add in Logan Kinyon to play tight defense and sophomore Tyler Semenas — younger brother of UWGB player Derek Semenas — coming off the bench, and Laconia will give opposing backcourts fits. Brandon Waldschmidt (6-3, Jr.) and Jim Huebschman (6-5, Sr.) are starters in the frontcourt and solid contributors in their own right. “Any time you bring a team back, the maturity and the finality of their last year sinks in and has quite an impact,” King said. “We had WLA down 24-6 in our place and let them up. We need that killer instinct,” King added

THE REPORTER FILE PHOTO

Jim Huebschman and Laconia finished 20-5 overall and 11-3 in the Flyway last season, and the Spartans are expected to vie for the league title this season. about the most important thing. “We have to put that nail in the coffin when it’s there.” Teams that play Omro will need to pay good attention to Steve Egan, a 6-5 senior who averaged 11 points and 9 rebounds. Lucas Allen and Brandon Tyler both stand 6-foot-3, while Ryan Winske will look to reprise his role as league’s best player, just like in football. The next few teams can’t match the depth of Omro or Laconia, but have a star player that can carry the team. Kettle Moraine Lutheran’s Dylan Rusch may have the most raw talent in the league and will be playing collegiately next year. But the Chargers don’t return any other starters. North Fond du Lac’s Dylan Wodsedalek averaged 12 points a game, but only played 12 games because of injuries.

If he can stay healthy and his supporting cast — led by Jarrod Marose and Travis White in the backcourt — helps him out, the Orioles should vastly improve on last year’s 5-18, 5-9 finish. “I’m optimistic,” North Fond du Lac coach Pay Lloyd said. “I know Laconia is very good. Omro, I’ve seen them play, and they are tough, and KML is always good. Then there’s us. I really believe we can compete night in and night out. “We’ve had some games lost last year because of free throws or costly turnovers. I hope the extra year of maturation will help them understand more the importance of every possession.” Lomira has two excellent guards. Jordan Beck was firstteam all-conference last season, and coach Tyler Witkowski expects Beck to lead the Lions in most stat categories.

“Probably one of the best things that Jordan possesses is unselfishness,” Witkowski explained. “He’s more than willing to get everyone involved. His ability to play a complete game is beyond me. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s ball handling, screening, shooting. He’s able to play a compete game.” Beck also has 5-foot-10 Zach Weston, a junior sharp-shooter, but what Lomira doesn’t have is a talented big guy. Mitch Luedtke is the tallest player at 6-3, but none of Witkowski’s post players are great rebounders. The next group has questions up and down the roster. WLA has seven seniors, but they spent most of last year on the bench, and coach Jeremiah Hoffmann isn’t sure what to expect once the games mean something. Springs lost all five starters from a 4-18 team. Of the likely Ledger leaders, a couple of them, Eric Feldner and Evan Henderson are just sophomores. Horicon returns four starters, but the Marshmen have been anything but successful lately. Finally, Mayville is starting fresh. Tony Scallon has been an assistant on the Mayville girls team and an assistant at UWStout, but this will be his first head coaching gig. And he doesn’t walk into a great situation. He only has eight varsity players right now, two are seniors and two are sophomores. “We have a fresh start, fresh faces, fresh kids trying to learn and play hard,” Scallon said. “It’s up to them. If they want to buy into what we’re doing we can have success. We need to become a more consistent team.” Scallon, a ’97 Mayville grad, wants to play up-tempo, play aggressive defense and return Mayville basketball to its proud tradition. With all the new faces, he said he expects his two seniors, Paul Giese and Brock Hanke, to lead the team in his first year on the job. “There are a lot of good teams,” King said. “I like it when you have that type of conference.”

Huskies start over with co-coaches BY DOUG WHITELEY The Reporter

It has worked well in football at New Holstein, so there is good reason to believe the girls basketball team can benefit from co-head coaches. Tom Hau retur ns to the Huskies after a 10-year absence, and Nathan DePagter will be in his first year as a head coach. Hau coached New Holstein from 1985-2001, winning two league titles. “Our goal is to emulate what the football coaches have accomplished,” Hau said. “Nathan’s quite young, and I’m quite a bit older, and hopefully that blend will be good for our program, and so far it has. Nathan brings a lot of enthusiasm to the program.” They will need to rebuild after an 0-14 Eastern Wisconsin Conference season last year and a 120 mark overall. There seems to be good talent returning for New Holstein, however, led by returning second-team all-conference player Amelia Mirsberger. “She’s our point guard, and she’s very strong with the ball,” Hau said. “She’s a good perimeter shooter, and she’s good at penetrating gaps, too.” The all-conference first team in 2009-10 was dominated by seniors, but the second team had just one senior. In addition to Mirsberger, Plymouth’s Amanda Gumm was also a junior on the second team a season ago, and two sophomores — Waupun’s Katie Hansen and Kiel’s Mikayla Preissner — also earned secondteam accolades. Mirsberger, a 5-6 guard, averaged 10.4 points a game last season. It should also help the Huskies tremendously to get Chelsi Cash back. Cash, a 5-10 forward, scored 12.5 points a game, but was out with an injured knee for much of the season. “When she was able to play

GANNETT WISCONSIN MEDIA FILE PHOTO

New Holstein’s Chelsi Cash jumps for the ball against Two Rivers’ Becca Diedrich. Cash earned second-team all-Eastern Wisconsin Conference honors as a sophomore, but she missed most of her junior season with an injury. she makes a difference on the floor,” Hau said. “She’s a very versatile player; she can play on the perimeter and is strong in the post. She attracts a lot of attention when she’s on the floor.” Junior Lauren Voelker is the other returning letter winner and the next highest returning scorer for the Huskies after she had a 5.2 points a game average

as a sophomore, and Hau said Voelker has improved her game. Waupun had an underclassman on the second-team all-conference list in Hansen. Hansen averaged in double digits last season, scoring 10.7 points a game as the Warriors went 8-6 in the EWC and 15-9 overall. Waupun returns a good deal of experience, but it will have to

replace the steady play of fouryear varsity player Makayla Hopp, who was voted to the allleague first team. Last season, Morgan Domask scored 9.2 points a game in her sophomore season. Missy Kuik added 8.1 points a game last year as a junior, and both Rachel Dickhut and Biz Broadway scored about 4 points as juniors. Kewaskum had a breakout season last year under first-year coach Mike Kleinhans. The Indians went 11-3 in the league for second behind Sheboygan Falls, which went 13-1 in league play. The Indians had a senior-dominated team led by Anna Butler, who along with Becca Diedrich of Two Rivers and Lauren Carman of Falls were named triplayers of the year. Christine Bohn was the most experienced underclassman, playing in all 23 games last year for the Huskies and averaging 3.3 points a game. Campbellsport also had a first-year coach last year. Amy (Owens) Siikarla took over for longtime coach Tom Wilkins, and the Cougars went 3-11 in league play. Brianna Halfmann scored 7.6 points a game last year for Campbellsport as a junior, earning an honorable mention nod from the EWC coaches. Looking at which teams are projected frontrunners likely starts with Falls as it returns honorable mention players senior Brooke Buehler and sophomore Staci Hassler. Plymouth may have the best shot to win the EWC crown, according to Hau. The Panthers and Kiel return the majority of their teams; Plymouth being led by Gumm and seniors Kaitlyn Hoffman and Chrissy Perl, who were both honorable mention selections last season. “Those three teams would be the favorites for the title with Plymouth having the best chance,” Hau said.

Yedinak back home on Waupun bench BY PAUL KEUP

Bill Yedinak was head coach of the Waupun High School boys basketball team for only seven games before his nation called him to service. Yedinak, a reserve member of the U.S. Army’s 4th Brigade/95th Division, was called into a Civil Affairs Unit from Portland, Ore., in 2008 to serve in Iraq. The Business and Infor mation Technology teacher said good-bye to his wife and three children, and he handed the reins of the basketball program to Randy Armga before his deployment. “That was a tough thing,” said Yedinak, whose unit helped set up water treatment plants and other devices to improve the sanitary conditions around the Baghdad area. “We got going at 7-0, and I had to pull out. That part was tough. I returned to coaching a few years (as an assistant) and got back into it (after 10 years away). What a year to have everything like that happen in a span of six months. “From 6,000 miles away I was their No. 1 fan, I guarantee that.” The 2008-09 team tied Plymouth for the league title at 13-1, and the 200910 team won the EWC at 13-1. Yedinak returned from Iraq in Feb. 2010 with about three or four games remaining, and he served as an assistant to Ar mga the rest of the season as Waupun made it to the sectional semifinals. Now, upon re-taking the reins, Yedinak’s Warriors lose all five starters from last year, but the Wisconsin Basketball

Waupun boys basketball coach Bill Yedinak said farewell to his team on Dec. 23, 2008, before being deployed to Iraq as a member of a Civil Affairs Unit. Yedinak returned to the U.S. last February, and he resumes his head coaching job this season. Yearbook still picked the team to win the EWC. “They have? Oh, boy. I didn’t know that. It doesn’t matter anyway. We have to take care of business one way or another. Maybe my first loss will get me the axe, I don’t know,” Yedinak said with a laugh. Expectations are high in Waupun because the Warriors’ junior varsity team went 21-0 last season. The Warriors will be led by sophomore forward Cody Zimmerman, junior guard Nate Hopp, junior forward Ryan Gerritson and junior Adam Schmitt. The rotation also will include junior guard Jordan Hopp and junior forward Colin Visser. Plymouth returns sec-

ond-team EWC selection Mitch Unger along with Myles Dellger, and the Panthers were picked second by the WBY. Kiel, which beat Waupun in the sectional semifinal, lost star player Brandon Griese, but it returns sharpshooter Joey Burris and six other seniors from last year’s State team. The Raiders were picked third, and New Holstein was picked fourth ahead of Sheboygan Falls, Two Rivers, Campbellsport and Kewaskum. “The conference is wide open,” Yedinak said. “I wouldn’t put us at the top. We’ll be in the mix, but we’re certainly not the pick to win it. Kiel is coming off a State trip and has a nice senior

class. We have primarily juniors and sophomores that are going to be playing. It’s certainly going to be a tough match. I’m not saying we can’t be there.” New Holstein lost senior first-team player Tyler Zipperer to a knee injury before the football season, and the Huskies look to classmates Brett Boettcher and Sam Cash to pick up the slack. “Obviously it’s going to hurt, but we have to put another guy on the floor,” New Holstein coach Ken Stephany said. “They played the football season without him so they’re used to it.” Still, it hurts the Huskies’ preseason expectations to finish fourth. “I don’t see us at that

spot right now based on not having Tyler,” Stephany said. “Waupun and Plymouth are the top two, and after that it’s whoever plays the best. Two Rivers should have a good team. “Kiel, even though they lost Brandon Gries, will have a good team. Sheboygan Falls is always tough for us. We should be somewhere in the middle. If we play defense and rebound, we may end up in the fourth place.” The title appears to be up for grabs. “Unlike the past couple years, I don’t think there is any clear frontrunner,” Yedinak said. “I’d give the nod to Kiel, but hopefully we’ll be in the mix.”

CWC, Markesan to tussle in Central BY DOUG WHITELEY The Reporter

Central Wisconsin Christian had a special player and outstanding season in 2010. The Crusaders featured Jaimie Kok, who earned the Trailways Conference Central Division’s Player of the Year, they won a share of the conference title and finished 23-4 overall. And although CWC has only two seniors (Shanna Braunschweig and Lisa O’Connor) back this year, the Crusaders have good momentum that may be difficult for league foes to stop. “We had a great season, finished 23-4 and graduated three quality seniors,” said CWC coach Mark Vander Werf f. “We’ve brought back four experienced players from that team as well as three other players who were very successful in their two years in the JV program. “They know how to win games, and that’s a big step.” Markesan was the team that earned the other share of the league title. The Hornets went 17-7 overall, but they had a young squad that was able to rise up a season ago. “At the end of the year last year I mentioned to our girls that I was as proud of last year’s team as any I’ve ever coached,”

GANNETT WISCONSIN MEDIA FILE PHOTO

Central Wisconsin Christian’s Shanna Braunschweig leaps for the ball during a 46-44 triple-overtime win over Manitowoc Lutheran in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal on March 18 at Watertown High School. said Markesan coach Skip Laper. “In the (2009-10) preseason they picked us to finish fourth out of five teams. We had a bunch that, when it came for time for all-conference, none of

the stats jumped out, but they played very solid as a team.” The good news for Laper and the Hornets is they will have nearly the entire team back except for leading scorer Rea

Rooney, who graduated as a second-team all-conference player. Rachel Lang made the first team for Markesan and averaged 5.4 points a game and about 3.5 rebounds as a junior. “We didn’t put a lot of points on the board; we just did it on the defensive end and Rachel’s a big part of that,” Laper said, mentioning that Lang has demonstrated that she can put up bigger offensive numbers at times. Lang and senior guard Angela Brown will be in their fourth varsity seasons for the Hornets. Brown scored about 5 points last year, and Laper said she had a good summer offensively. The other returning Markesan player who earned league recognition was Emily Krueger. As a sophomore last season the Hor nets’ point guard had 6.6 points a game. With that trio and Maddie Kelly, Laper said he knows what to expect from the guard play. What he’s hoping he can get is consistent offensive play inside from Cortney Anderson, who showed good promise last year in scoring 6.5 points as a freshman. Anderson is 6-foot-1 and will be joined inside by 5-10 junior Kelcey Symons.

Oakfield tries to catch Lourdes in North BY DOUG WHITELEY The Reporter

It would be hard to argue against Oshkosh Lourdes repeating as Trailways Conference North Division champions. The Knights went undefeated last season in league play and 22-4 overall. What’s more is Lourdes has the two players back for the 2010-11 season who were most responsible for that success. North Division Player of the Year Lexy Petermann is back, along with firstteamer Teenie Lichtfuss. And they’re both only juniors. “They only lost one senior, most of their team is coming

back,” said Oakfield coach Dave Benkoske. The Knights also have 5-6 junior Hatti Bartlett returning to provide help scoring for Lichtfuss and Petermann. Oakfield was on Lourdes’ heels last year, finishing 11-4 in the North. The Oaks retur n Katie Gross, a senior, who scored about 10 points a game last season. Kayla Rymer is a 510 senior who added 6.3 points and was named all-conference second team. “I’m expecting (Gross) to be first team all-conference along with Kayla Rymer,” Benkoske said. “(Rymer) was the sixth vote-getter. I think if she scores

more last year she makes first team. It’s all confidence. I think she turned down shots last year she probably shouldn’t have.” In addition to Gross and Rymer, Jami Fink is a senior captain who Benkoske said is a smart ballplayer and had a good offseason. Benkoske said the Oaks will strive to gain ground on Lourdes while working to improve their game. The one thing that would make Oakfield even better is finishing around the hoop on a more consistent basis. “Our shooting percentage … there were a lot of games we shot in the teens and that’s not

good,” the coach said. “It’s hard to win games like that. Making all the puppy shots and layups, we have to do better at. And, of course, play good defense.” Even if the Oaks are able to both shoot and defend better it may not be enough to beat the Knights, or maybe it might. Benkoske said Lourdes should win it with the players it has, but the Oaks aren’t going to concede anything. “I’m saying they should,” Benkoske said. “I’m thinking that we’re going to push them this year, at least I hope we would. But they have to be the favorite.”

Oaks chase Green Lake in T’ways North BY MICHAEL ROGERS The Reporter

The Trailways Conference is used to players being recruited by NCAA Division I schools. But almost all of them played at Randolph High School. But, in a rare occasion this season, it’s Green Lake with the best player in the conference, and that makes the Lakers a clear-cut favorite in the North Division. Don’t worry, Randolph is still in control of the Central Division. Green Lake junior forward Matt Van Scyoc measures 6-foot-5 and has an effortless leaping ability. Not surprisingly, midmajor and small-major Division I programs are after him. And the Trailways North teams have to figure out how to stop him. “He’s such a strong kid. I know he plays a lot of basketball during the summer,” Oakfield coach Kyle Seyfert said. “I don’t think there is (a player as good). He’s head and shoulders above everyone in the league. I think they’re going to have a nice team with a lot of quality.” The Lakers lose Brad Brooks and his 17 points per game to Ripon College, but they do return Van Scyoc’s 14 points as well as Curtis Morgan’s back-

The top player is clear cut, but the second-best player and the second-best team is anything but set. Oakfield’s Jeremiah Erdmann was a first-team all-division se-

lection after averaging 16.4 points per game. The quick and shifty guard carried the Oaks on his back several times and scored more than 20 points on eight occasions. “There’s going to be a lot more of the same this year. We have a

few players, but we’re low on numbers,” Seyfert said. “We’re going to be looking for more from Jeremiah — more scoring (and) more leadership, but we have a few players that can step up and make plays.” Erdmann showed his scoring prowess a year ago, but Seyfert is hoping for Erdmann to show more of his passing ability. The Oaks have returners, but without graduated Cody Veleke, Erdmann’s going to have to do more for his teammates. One player who may make things easier for Erdmann is Josh Holz. The senior is 6-1 but will have to play bigger with no one on the established rotation taller than 6-1. Holz averaged 7 points per game, and the only other returning player to make a dent was Brayden Ryan, who averaged 2 a game. Joe Brooks of Oshkosh Lourdes is the third returning firstteam all-division player, and he will lead a Knights team that always contends. “I’d watch Oshkosh Lourdes. That’s a nice team every year,” Seyfert said. “Them and Green Lake, those two teams are the favorites.”

Markesan, CWC look up to Randolph in Central BY MICHAEL ROGERS The Reporter

For a change, Randolph doesn’t have a 6-foot-10 player this year. That’s likely the only thing that will change, though, with the Rockets. With TJ Huizenga ready to take on more responsibility and become the next great Randolph favorite, don’t expect anyone to beat Randolph any time soon. “TJ, he’s turning into one of those special players,” Markesan coach Josh Gibbons said. “He can take over the game. He can do whatever he wants to do. He’ll be their leader, but they have a lot around him.” CWC coach Dan Ten Napel was more cautious, however, saying no one really knows how Huizen-

ga will react to facing defensive scrutiny and not having current UW-Milwaukee player Kyle Kelm to take pressure off. Those two coaches and their teams expect to jockey for second place in the five-team Trailways Central Division. For the first time in five years Markesan’s football team had success behind an athletic senior class. Gibbons expects that to carry over to the hoops season. “Yeah, actually I am. It’s kind of the first year since I’ve been the head basketball coach that the football team was successful,” Gibbons said. “I was around that, too. It’s been real positive. “I think the guys grew up playing football (during the season). I’m excited, and the guys are ex-

cited to have it carry over.” It doesn’t hurt that four starters return. Alex Dallman, Zach Schwoch, Joe Quade and Cody Laper all averaged between 7 and 9 points per game. The four of them are mostly backcourt players. The leading scorer provides the height and muscle for the Hornets. Greg Krenz (6-5) averaged 11 points and more than 6 rebounds per game in earning first-team division honors. He’s the only returning first-teamer. Gibbons said points won’t be a problem — stopping opposing offenses will be. “I always think how we play team defense and rebound the basketball (is critical),” he said. “If we get stops defensively, we’ll

be OK. We have a lot of guys that can score; we have a lot of options that way. If we can hold teams down we’ll be OK.” Meanwhile, Ten Napel is worried about getting his best players on the court. Two of his players were dealing with concussions at the start of the season. Derek De Young is out until at least February with an injury, and Nate Miller is retur ning from an ACL injury. Another question mark revolves around replacing Jacob Van Den Berg. Van Den Berg had six double-doubles and averaged 17 points from his post position. Ten Napel expects Luke Ganz (62) and Marty De Vries (6-4) to make big strides in replacing Van Den Berg.

Smit will be a three-year starter on the Fondy varsity. He said he tuned up his ball-handling abilities this summer, and he hopes he’s better at finishing plays with either drives or pullup jump shots. Another thing Smit did for the third consecutive offseason was a workout program with Corey Wencl, who works for Agnesian and is the Fondy High trainer. Smit said the program has helped with his conditioning, quickness and strength. This past summer he talked friends Lucas Wendt, Logan Wendt and David Zimmerman into joining him. “After the second year, I went out and started recruiting some basketball guys because I felt it helped me out tremendously,” he said. Smit should help Fondy out tremendously. Zakos said he has seen Smit be able to score in various ways, but he also distributes the ball like a true point guard, and that’s the thing that will help him at the collegiate level. Smit said he does have designs on playing after high school, but

At 5 feet, 10 inches Bonlander can shoot it from outside, or play on the block with her back to the basket. “She’s a tough match-up for any team,” Follis said. “If they guard her with a big girl, we can bring her outside, and if they guard her with a small girl we can take her inside.” Most teams tried to put a bigger player on Bonlander, and that worked with mixed results. Follis said starting spots had yet to be won during the first week of practice, but he said he is envisioning a fairly balanced team. “I think we’re pretty solid and even,” he said. “I think there’s going to be good competition for spots.” Osborn, a 5-8 senior, scored

he will wait until after the season to weigh his options. What Zakos likes about this year’s experienced team is they won’t have to rely on Smit to carry the load offensively. “We have a variety of options where we could have a different leading scorer several times during the season,” the coach said. “I think we have a lot of guys who can contribute and be active scoring-wise.” One of those players is senior Kyle Kretschmann, who averaged about 8 points a game last year. Zakos said Kretschmann is a player who can emerge offensively if he has an aggressive approach. Smit said he’s got confidence in his teammate and hopes

about 8 points a game last season. “Elizabeth Osborn should give us a good amount, and probably Devin Dilling,” Follis said when asked who would help provide the scoring punch. Emily Riese will again likely see plenty of time as a junior.

he has it in himself now, too. “I definitely see Kyle … last year he was a little timid shooting the ball,” Zakos said. “Over the summer we worked on getting him confidence in his jump shot, and this year I see him having a big season and being able to do that.” Zakos said all eight seniors should contribute in some way this season, which he attributes to their hard work and time put into the game. Joey Schroeder is a three-year varsity player who was also the Cardinals’ football quarterback. He managed the game well on the gridiron, and Zakos said he is making better decisions with the basketball. Both of Schroeder’s targets on the football field will take their athletic abilities to the court. Seniors Anthony Pouchert and Charles Moore are both players who will be quality defenders, although Zakos said anyone who steps on the floor better be able to defend first and foremost. Schroeder scored about 7 points a game last year, and Moore had about 4. Tyler McArthur is the only other Cardinal returning who scored any substantial points. He had 7 a game last year, but he does more than score. “He does a little bit of everything,” Zakos said. “He can re-

bound, knock down the 15-footer and move without the ball. He’s the guy that will do a lot of things that will not show up on the stat sheet.” Lucas Wendt, at 6-2, will be a Fondy post player, and the coach said Wendt is solid in every aspect and always gives steady effort. Eric Sipiorski is a senior guard who is back after an extended illness last year took him out of the mix. Zakos said juniors Mitch Hendrix and Jake Diener will find minutes as well as sophomore Max Schebel, who is a 6-2 sophomore center. Appleton East may be the team to beat in the league — and in the state — behind point guard Johnny Coenen, who is a unanimous pick and the only firstteam all-FVA player returning from last year. Coenen scored 12 points for the Patriots who went on to play into the state semifinals before losing to Madison Memorial. They won 22 games a season ago and are ranked No. 5 in all of Division 1 in the state by the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook. “Appleton East, they’ve been our rivals ever since third grade,” Smit said. “Our main focus is on them, and Oshkosh North is very athletic. Those are going to be very tough games.”

The volleyball standout averaged about 7 points a game last year. “She’s really strong and she can jump,” Follis said, indicating he expects good rebounding from Riese. “She does a really nice job of anticipating.” The Cardinals went 7-11 in the FVA for seventh in the league last year, and it would seem likely that they are ready to make a jump in the league standings. “The big thing is we’re going to have to be better at defense,” Bonlander said. “We’re going to have to be better at that because you can’t win without defense. Once we perfect that we’ll be good because we’re usually pretty good on the offensive side.” Well, the Cardinals were good on offense, except when there was no one defending from exactly 15 feet in front of the hoop. Follis said there are two offensive aspects at which the team needs to improve substantially. “Shoot free throws; I think we

shot 56 percent from the freethrow line,” he said. “The other thing was turnovers. We averaged 20 turnovers a game last year. Ball security is going to be a major focus of ours, making sure we take care of the basketball. That will give our team more chances to score and then the other team less chances to score. “With those two (problems) we’re leaving a lot of points on the floor. Hopefully that would swing a lot of the closer games our way.” Follis said it is difficult to project a winner in the FVA, but Appleton East’s got one of the top players in Marissa Michalkiewicz, the only unanimous selection by the coaches for the all-FVA first team last year. The 6-foot lefty is primarily an inside player, but will not shy away if given an open 3-pointer. East only went 10-8 last year, but Michalkiewicz scored 13.1 and was only a sophomore.
