Spring Salutations Does it get any better than spring? When the snow melts, robins make a triumphant return and a hint of summer laces the air, it’s just about the best thing ever. Spring is a sweet reward for another winter endured. This issue of YOU Magazine celebrates the fashionista in all of us and what better time to do it? Spring fashion is unencumbered by the bulky necessities of winter wear, but makes good use of their lighter, airy versions. Wool coats become denim jackets. Flannels give way to more sheer fabrics. Layers are worn for their appeal, not your own survival. Not that you need another reason to celebrate, but here are a few ways you might welcome this new, glorious spring season: Try something new. Maybe it’s attending an event you’ve never been to like Prevea’s Runway for Life (pg. 16) or the YWCA Women of Vision luncheon (pg. 18). It could be checking out a new local boutique on Broadway (pg. 11). Whatever it is, doing something out of the ordinary is a surefire way to breathe new life into your routine. Daydream. Let your mind wander to far off places. Create a “dream vacation” board on Pinterest. Give yourself a little mental space in your day just to dream. When’s the last time you did that? Add color. Spring is the season for color so don’t be shy. Start by infusing some new hues into your living space. Check out a great tip from the interior design experts at La-Z-Boy on page 19. Play dress up. Yes, even full-grown women with jobs, children and mortgages are allowed to play dress up. In fact, it’s encouraged. Check out fashion contributor Kirsty Gungor’s take on ballet-inspired looks (pg. 12) for ideas on how to feel like a ballerina every day. Use your vacation days. Yes, all of them. Please do not be part of the 40 percent of Americans who leave paid vacation time on the table. Nobody likes a work martyr. Even if it’s just to enjoy the sunny weather at home, take them. Use them. Be happy. Here’s to longer days, warmer nights and honeydew margaritas on your front porch.

Fashion Forward Azure owner Shanna Zeitler celebrates five years in fashion with a second store
story By Amelia Compton Wolff | Photos by Mike Peters Hair by Kimberlee Gast and makeup by Barbara Steen both of K Será salon and spa, De Pere.
For a woman whose favorite color is black, Shanna Zeitler really knows how to rock a neon yellow manicure. “I like to do something different,” Zeitler says of her personal fashion philosophy. “It could be something small, but unexpected.” It’s an unseasonably warm spring day and Zeitler’s lightweight army green field jacket is offset by a glitzy multi-strand necklace. It’s the kind of utilitarian/ultra-feminine juxtaposition that only those in the fashion know dare to pull off, leaving the rest of us wondering why we never would have thought of that. But while Zeitler’s style hinges on the unexpected, when it comes to her business things are pretty straight forward. Namely, the runaway success of Azure, Zeitler’s high-end women’s clothing boutique in De Pere. Since the boutique’s opening five years ago this month, Zeitler has accrued a collection of equally high-end clients ranging from local businesswomen to day-trippers from Milwaukee and Chicago. Azure has been so successful, in fact, that this summer Zeitler is launching a sister store in Fish Creek which will echo the De Pere location’s contemporary vibe. Zeitler attributes much of Azure’s growth to her fashion-
loving followers, who are aptly referred to as “Alisters” on the boutique’s blog and social media pages. “Opening your own business is not for everyone. It’s a lot of work and a lot of sacrifice, but it’s so worth it,” she says. “When a woman comes out of the fitting room in love with how she looks, that’s why I do what I do.”
Coming into Fashion
A career in the beauty industry paved the way for Zeitler’s transition into the fashion world. She was working as a hair stylist in Minneapolis when she met her future husband, Scott, and her future sister-in-law, Jill, who would also become her business partner. “I’ve always loved fashion and loved the industry,” says Zeitler, an Ashwaubenon native. “I know people who go to Chicago shopping so we thought why don’t we bring it here? They want it, we want it, so we jumped in head first.” After relocating back to the Green Bay area in 2007, Zeitler and her sister-in-law opened Azure in April

2010 with the goal of bringing big city style back home. The duo hoped to offer local ladies the chance to purchase pieces from designers typically found in larger metropolitan areas, while still offering styles with plenty of everyday wearability. Mission accomplished. Today, Azure specializes in contemporary looks and unique customer services such as creating head-to-toe looks for clients. Zeitler often relies on her beauty industry background to recommend hair and makeup options that complement her customer’s purchases. “I think people appreciate my suggestions for hair and makeup to create the total look,” Zeitler says. “It’s the same industry really, beauty is fashion in that it’s always changing.” To keep things a bit more exclusive, Zeitler only stocks one of every size for each item she carries so you can be sure you won’t show up at your next event as someone’s twin (major fashion fail). Customers are encouraged to text the store for pictures of specific pieces in their size. “We like to make it as easy as possible for our customers,” Zeitler says. “After five years you really get to know them, what styles they

like and what events they have coming up.” Over the past five years there has been plenty of change for both the boutique and Zeitler personally. Zeitler took over sole ownership of Azure three years ago and became a first-time mom to 2-year-old daughter, Ruby. This summer Zeitler will not only be launching her Fish Creek location, but she and her husband will be welcoming their second child in August. Oh, and Zeitler sold her home so she will be moving to De Pere from Green Bay. Busy much? But Zeitler has never been one to shy away from a little hard work. Zeitler says her clientele-turned-fashion-family and her passion for style are what keep her motivated. That and her mission to put Green Bay on the fashion map. “There are lots of people here who love fashion and love to dress,” she says. “I think Green Bay is on the brink of something. I don’t think I would be able to have a successful business if we weren’t.”
Style: Part II
After two years of hunting for the perfect location, Zeitler finally found a home for her second boutique in Door County’s retail hub, Fish Creek. “We looked at other places, but we definitely think Fish Creek is the area for retail and shopping so it’s where we wanted to be,” Zeitler says. “We want to be in the middle of everything.” The store will be located at 9422 Cedar Street, formerly Vagabond Imports, and shoppers can expect to find much of what they would at the De Pere store. The new store will have a soft opening May 15 with a larger launch after Memorial Day when Door County’s busy season kicks into high gear. The boutique will remain open through October, with Zeitler splitting her time between the two locations. When it came to determining the new store’s overall look and feel, Zeitler says it was a hard decision. “I think the vibe in Door County is a little more casual, but I feel like that’s pretty much covered,” she says. “We will probably have a few different lines than what we carry in De Pere, but for the most part it’s going to be the same vibe. I’m curious to see what people want. It’s kind of like starting all over again and seeing who your customers are.” Zeitler opted to keep the Azure name for her second store to ref lect its similarities in look, feel and vision for the future. “Azure is the color of the sky,” she says, “and the sky is our limit.” april 2015 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | 9

Spring is here, its fragile arms blossoming elegantly in the softest of shades. We’re left a little breathless, soaking in that warm sun and fresh air and dreaming of a wardrobe to echo the delicacy of the season, finding ourselves irresistibly drawn to the ballerina, spring personified. Inspired by her graceful movement and impassioned spirit, our sweetest spring wardrobe draws from a balletic palette, soft pastels and cloudy whites. Fashion’s most beautifully choreographed moments come together in looks inspired by the dancer.
The Movement There’s something to be said about the way a sleeve catches the breeze as it billows lithely from a shoulder or the way a skirt flows down from the hip, dancing on air with the subtlest movement. This embroidered tunic does just that, creating beautiful shapes that flatter and bring spring to life. Tunic, $56. Ring, $80. Bracelets, $19.95-150. Wild Ginger, Green Bay. Wild Ginger has created a shopping experience that is different to any other in Green Bay, a boutique inspired by the family’s trip to Thailand. Owners Keli and Randy Biebel hand-picked a magnificent and diverse collection for the store from their travels and offer those unique, oneof-a-kind items that customers cherish.

The Pastels Spring’s color wheel favors airy ice cream shades and we’re especially loving sea foam green. This comfy crinkled fabric feels laid-back yet remains graceful and an A-line silhouette flatters slim and curvy shapes alike. Dress, $107.50. Cardigan, $39. Bracelets, $20. Zulou, Green Bay. Zulou owners, Betsy Gallagher and Krista Evrard, love those 70s styles coming back for spring – lots of fringe, unique prints and great color combos with a touch of bohemian style. Zulou’s clothing is always comfortable enough for everyday wear, but fun and unique enough for special occasions. Their customers have fun with fashion and aren’t afraid to express their unique style.

The Romance Dance often tells a great love story and her costumes depict epic romance in their detail and embellishment. This look takes a cue from that, with a delicately crocheted back that falls into the sweetest bows. Cat-walking for a cause
Prevea Runway for Life is set for takeoff May 7 By Meghan Diemel
It’s Green Bay’s best party, says Dr. Ashok Rai, CEO and president of Prevea Health. Prevea’s Runway for Life will once again raise important funds for a local charity, while attendees enjoy a fashion show featuring the latest trends from locally owned stores and boutiques. A trunk show, silent and live auctions, cocktails, and hors d’ oeuvres are also part of the eveThursday, May 7, ning’s festivities. 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Jet Air,
Prevea Runway for Life
1921 Airport Dr., Green Bay. For ticket and event information, visit www.runwayfor lifegb.org.
“There’s always something fun and new,” explains Dr. Rai. “This isn’t just walking in front of a curtain – this is a high-end fashion show. The lighting and music, the stage, the format, even the food presentation – it’s amazing how they weave everything together. It’s the coolest place to be seen, raise money and enjoy yourself.” Prevea Runway for Life takes place annually at Jet Air, next to Austin Straubel Airport in Green Bay. For the first time, a high-end fashion video will accompany the professional models opening the show
wearing the new collection from designer Devoid and Deveil. The beneficiary of this year’s event, Families of Children with Cancer (FOCWC), seeks to support families financially and emotionally after a child’s diagnosis. FOCWC was organized in 1974 by parents and healthcare professionals who saw a need for a support group. They serve much of Northeast Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Now more than four decades later, the group aims to provide advocacy, education, emotional and financial support, and hope to families upon diagnosis, throughout treatment and during recovery. “When you receive that news, there’s the shock and loneliness of it,” explains

Tim Gorton, FOCWC president. “A lot of times, family and friends don’t understand what you’re going through as a family. So, we want to be that organization that gives hope to those families.” Upon a child’s diagnosis, the group provides each family with a care package, including important information and gift cards for gas, groceries and other items. They also help families through many social events, with college scholarships, accommodations for treatments outside of the Green Bay area, mileage for treatments and memorial gifts for deceased children. For Gorton and Dr. Rai, the cause hits close to home. Dr. Rai is a childhood cancer survivor, and Gorton’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer at age 2.
THIS ISN’T JUST A MOTHER’S DAY GIFT
“Getting that binder [from FOCWC] was so helpful,” explains Gorton, who is a cancer survivor as well. “Your jaw is on the ground and you can’t fathom … the doctors are going above your head. You’re so overwhelmed with everything.”
Dr. Rai says it’s hard to find someone whose life hasn’t been touched by cancer, making this fund-raiser essential for organizations like FOCWC. “We all know a family who has been touched,” he adds. “We’re a community-based organization, so what warms our heart the most is all the money stays local, the participating businesses are local, and the models are local survivors. This is an event about taking care of your neighbors.”

Most of the models walking the runway during the fashion show are cancer survivors and are given a single-stemmed rose to carry as they model. A special touch for this year’s show will be the inclusion of the survivors’ bravery beads. Bravery beads are given each time chemo is received, spinal taps are taken, for each birthday during treatment, and for things like EKGs, blood transfusions, and bone marrow transplants, explains Gorton. Survivors walking in the fashion show will also hold their bravery bead chain.

“I look at my family, who had only been in the country for two years when I was diagnosed, and I can’t imagine how much better it would have been for them if they would have had an organization like this,” adds Dr. Rai.

Heard on the Street Good news about amazing things happening in our community By Amelia Compton Wolff
YWCA Women of Vision Luncheon Fashion and passion unite at YWCA’s signature Women of Vision Luncheon, “Walking in my Shoes.” The event will be held at Lambeau Field on Tuesday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The afternoon will be filled with laughs, networking, a silent auction, inspirational stories and, of course, shoes! Attendees are encouraged to wear the funkiest pair of shoes in their closets. Author, speaker and childhood advocate Melissa Atkins Wardy will address the group as keynote speaker. Wardy is the author of the critically-acclaimed book “Redefining Girly: How Parents Can Fight the Stereotyping and Sexualization of Girlhood, From Birth to Tween.” Former TV anchor and philanthropist Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer will emcee the event. Funds from the event directly support the initiatives of the Women’s Empowerment Center within the YWCA. The Empowerment Center provides job training classes and opportunities to female jobseekers. The YWCA’s Women of Vision group dedicates a portion of its spring luncheon program to recognizing a few outstanding community members who support women’s issues. edit. salon opens in De Pere Photos by Kasey and Ben PMPS Photography
Two area stylists have joined forces to launch edit. salon in De Pere, which opened last December. With more than 20 years of combined experience in the beauty industry, owners Amber Brown and Ashleigh Hauser decided the time was right to go into business for themselves. The pair met while working at a salon in Green Bay and became friends before becoming business partners. “We were ready to be fully invested in our careers and our own success,” Brown says. “Ashleigh came across the building we now rent and we fell in love with it. We knew we had to have that space.” The salon is located at 123 South Broadway, Suite B, in De Pere and offers men’s and women’s cuts, color, highlights and balayage. The salon features several unique services including flamboyage, extensions and dreads. Brown anticipates the service menu to grow as she and Hauser continue researching new techniques and offerings. As an eco-conscious salon, most of the interior decor is reclaimed and their davines hair color and product line is sustainable, zero impact and earth-friendly. “Having a healthy, earthfriendly product is as important to us as the functionality of the product,” Brown says. Appointments are currently available 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Call (920) 351-3230 for more information or visit edit. salon on Facebook and Instagram.

Great iPad Apps for Mom Flipboard
Moms are always on the go, making it difficult to keep up with social media. Flipboard, a free iPad app, creates a personalized magazine based on your Twitter stream, Facebook page, Google Reader feed and more. The app selects just the highlights, so you aren’t wasting time on posts that don’t interest you.
Need a recipe for dinner? Your next DIY project? Gardening ideas? Check, check and check. Pinterest provides oodles of “pinspiration” for everything from book club reading lists to exercise regimens. Save your pins to specialized boards as a way to organize your ideas and follow other moms to see what they are pinning.
