Time for a confession: I looked at my wedding photos on a daily basis for the first six months after I received them. And by six months, I might mean nine. Okay, maybe 12. I hope I’m not the only one who has done this. I blame Facebook for making it so easy to relive the glory of that day, but really, who wouldn’t want to relive one of the happiest days of their life? If this admission makes me lame, I don’t want to be not lame. This is why finding a wedding photographer you jive with, both stylistically and personally, is so, so important. I really hope you like him or her, because this person is going to be up in your mug with a camera, capturing some beautiful, intimate moments between you and your new spouse. You want to be as comfortable as possible, so it’s pretty imperative that you get along swimmingly with your photographer. No one understands this better than Erin Hanson, owner of Erin Jean Photography in De Pere. Erin is rocking the cover of our Wedding Issue and for good reason. She is a self-made woman, mother and wedding photographer who has built her business from the ground up. Erin is so graceful and sweet and I could just sing her praises all day, but why don’t you turn to page 8 and let the pictures speak for themselves. For all you ladies who got engaged over the holidays or came away from Valentine’s dinner with a little extra left-hand bling, this issue is for you. Whether you’re looking for hair and makeup ideas (Bridal Beauty, pg. 30) or how to keep your cool during all the hectic planning (Avoiding Nuptial Nightmares, pg. 28), we have you covered. For everyone who has the privilege of standing up in your best girl’s wedding this year, make sure to check out fashion contributor Kirsty Gungor’s take on how to rewear those bridesmaid dresses you never thought you could (Always a Bridesmaid, pg. 14). You will be shocked at how wearable a floor-length gown is with the right accessorizes. I know I did a double-take. Hopefully this issue fans the flames of excitement that already exist around weddings – before, during and after. Make sure to take a breath and a moment to enjoy each phase for what it is. There’s nothing else in the world like it. Happy wedding planning, reveling and reminiscing.

Simply Love Photographer Erin Hanson slows down to capture life’s sweetest moments
As a selfproclaimed people watcher and chronic eavesdropper, photographer Erin Hanson finds inspiration in the simplest of life’s moments.
“So many times I’ve wished I could just take a picture of someone, even like a mom dragging a crying kid out of a restaurant. I’m like ‘Oh, she’s so stressed out right now,’” Hanson says with a dreamy, far-off look in her eyes, mesmerized by just the thought of witnessing such a picturesque meltdown, “but if you could capture that image she would love it.” More often than not, Hanson isn’t capturing stills of exhausted mothers in distress. Rather, she has made a career out of documenting the happiest day of many women’s lives – their wedding day. “I was always the girl with bridal magazines, obsessed with weddings,” says Hanson, who even worked at a bridal boutique before

Erin’s tips for a beautiful day Be focused. “Try
portraits of children, finding beauty in the often overlooked details is a trademark of Hanson’s work. “Staying present every day is what motivates me. Just watching life move around me every day, my kids laughing or tickling each other, sitting on the porch with [my husband] Adam and having a glass of wine,” she says, “the emotion of it all and wanting to slow down and capture these moments for people that are so f leeting.”
through the whole process to focus on what you are actually doing, which is marrying your best friend. It’s such a better memory in the end.”
Be present. “Think
about how important all those details were to you in the planning process. Even if you spend just a few moments taking it in, make sure you are truly present to experience them on the day.”
Be you. “Celebrate who
you are as a couple rather than what you think your wedding should be. Bring in elements that are ‘you’ because that’s what guests will remember forever.”
Photographic memories
taking the fulltime plunge into wedding photography. “I love weddings. They’re just fun, everybody’s so happy.” Hanson’s photographic style suits weddings to a T – it’s soft, romantic and highly based on the emotions of her subjects. Whether she is shooting weddings or

Erin traveled to Italy to photograph this wedding, pictured upper left and upper right.
“I think everyone should have one,” she says nodding at the dog who has dropped a red rubber chew toy on the hardwood f loor in front of her. ”They are such good dogs, and funny.” Looking around Hanson’s Green Bay home, it makes perfect sense that she is a photographer. From the long farmhouse table surrounded by mismatched chairs to the milk glass collection lining an open shelf, everywhere you look is something adorable just begging to be photographed. “[My house] is constantly changing. I just can’t leave things. I’m always trying new things,” she says. The 30-year-old takes the same progressive approach when photographing clients. “Sometimes it works out and it’s awesome, and sometimes it’s an epic failure, but it’s how you keep making new art for each client.” Art has been an inf luence in Hanson’s life since childhood. She grew up on a farm outside of Madison with a mother who encouraged creative expression in varied mediums, from designing Ukrainian eggs to photography, of course. “I grew up being exposed to all forms of art because of her,” Hanson says. A high school photography course solidified Hanson’s love for the art form and led her to minor in it while attending Trinity Christian College in Chicago. It wasn’t long before Hanson realized photography should be more than a minor. It needed to be her main focus. Hanson switched gears and enrolled in the photography program at the College of DuPage. “My mom was thrilled,” Hanson remembers. “For so many photographers, just jumping off and doing it is really scary but I had such a support system with my mom and dad. A lot of people don’t have that support.” After a year of photography school, Hanson married her high school sweetheart and moved back to Wisconsin. That summer, she photographed her first wedding for a friend and the foundation for her business was made. Hanson continued photographing weddings on weekends while working other jobs during the week. About four years
Erin gets to know couples during their engagement shoot (bottom right) so they are old friends by wedding day (bottom left).
of hard work later, Hanson decided to rent a studio space in De Pere and make photography her fulltime job. “We had our daughter, Lucy, and when she was three months old I told Adam I’m quitting my job and opening a studio. Two days later I found the spot in De Pere,” Hanson says. The following six years proved to be ones of tremendous growth for Hanson and her business. She now shoots weddings all around the state and the world, including locations such as Napa Valley, Key West, Florida and even the Amalfi Coast of Italy.

you spotlight “That’s one of the biggest job perks ever,” Hanson says with a laugh. “To be able to have your passion turn into your career, turn into traveling the world? I found this balance of feeling like I can be a mom, and have artistic outlets and a career I am proud of.”
The big picture To add even more “aww” to an already love-filled story, Hanson’s husband, Adam, serves as her second shooter and right-hand man on wedding day jobs. The couple just celebrated 10 years of marriage last month. (Fun fact: they got married at Thornberry Creek on January 22, 2005 during an epic snowstorm.) When photographing weddings, the pair has fallen into a comfortable rhythm with Hanson directing the day and focusing on the bridal couple, while Adam helps where needed and captures the details. “I would die without him at weddings,” Hanson says. “He’s like my eyes and ears at a wedding because I’m so focused. He’ll remind me to not get hit by a car crossing the street because I’m not paying attention.” Even with almost a decade of experience under her belt, Hanson still deals with wedding day jitters. “Every single wedding we drive up to I want to throw up. I think I forever will,” she says. “I used to wait for the day when I wasn’t that nervous, but now I think it’s good. It keeps me on my toes, excited and that energy is there for every bride.” Several years ago, Hanson attended a conference that inspired her to simplify her life. This meant purging her home of unnecessary clutter, examining her work schedule and accepting fewer weddings each year.

Hanson had been shooting up to 30 weddings a year which proved to be chaotic after having her second daughter, Ruby. These days Hanson shoots no more than 20 weddings each year. “I love giving the client that individual experience where they aren’t just a number, but we are getting to know them and giving them attention,” Hanson says. “I definitely run a boutique-style photography business where things are simple.” This way, Hanson can still enjoy a few summer weekends with family, usually spent thrifting reclaimed treasures for her home décor business, Rooted Salvage and Design, and refurbishing her 1964 Airstream travel trailer for trips to Door County. Simplifying has allowed Hanson to focus on what matters most and has filtered out distractions, letting the best aspects of her job truly shine. For Hanson, one of these things is the energy that surrounds weddings and the impact it has on her personal life. CALL FOR “It’s so fun to document someone’s love story that it CONSULTATION leaves you feeling so excited,” she says. “It feels like the craziest blessing to be living this life.”

Always a Bridesmaid Three ways to rewear that dress! Story and Styling By Kirsty Gungor of loveliesinmylife.com Photos by Erin Jean Photography, De Pere Hair and makeup by Victoria Stencil of Salon Fifty Four, Green Bay Many of us have stood beside a beautiful bride on her unforgettable day. We’ve swept down her aisle in illustrious ensembles, dreamy pastel confections and jewel toned sheaths. A bride’s hope is to unearth an array of wedding day treasures and in the case of her favorite ladies, an outfit her bridesmaids might wear again and again. Though regardless of good intentions, bridesmaids often spend a significant amount on dresses they’re sure they’ll never wear again. We hope to change that notion and to inspire you to try them on again! Bridesmaid dresses are often a great canvas, needing only a few simple layers and pretty accessories.
Kirsty Gungor is a blogger, photographer, fashion maven and do-ityourselfer extraordinaire. Originally from South Africa, Kirsty now lives in Green Bay with her husband and four children. Read more at www. loveliesinmylife.com.

Braids are a beautiful, low maintenance hairstyle that leave you feeling like a goddess. Here’s how Victoria at Salon Fifty Four achieved this romantic crown braid. To do it yourself, start with clean, dry hair. Grab a clip, a small rubber band, bobby pins and hairspray.
1.
Curl your hair after applying a heat protectant spray. This helps the ends blend softly into the braid and adds texture.
2. Part your hair by tak-
ing a 3 inch wide section across the top of your head starting at your right ear and ending at your left. Clip the remaining hair back.

3. Start your crown braid
at your right ear and start braiding a normal 3 strand dutch braid forming a crown along the top of your head with 1 inch sections crossing over.
4. Once you get to the
left ear, unclip the rest of your hair and continue braiding by adding hair from only the inner section.
5.
Once finished, secure with a band and pin the ends under the braided hair.
6. Add fullness by gently pulling on sections of the braid.
7. Lightly spray your braid with hairspray and you are done!

Builder Spotlight: Radue Homes After falling in love with an existing Radue home, Kim Voss and her husband, Kurt, decided to build the home of their dreams in Ledgeview. Of course, they contacted Radue Homes to help bring their dreams to reality. The Vosses wanted a simple, yet elegant home with an open concept ideal for entertaining. Plenty of storage was a must. Design Consultant Patty Radue and Co-Owner/ Project Manager Ryan Radue worked with Kim to customize the home’s layout, select the right materials and design the home’s
unique features, such as the theater’s stone arch doorway and lower level bathroom complete with a sauna. “Patty was really good at getting a sense of my style and really working with that,” Kim says. “She allowed me to have my own taste, but helped guide me on the finer points.” The team broke ground in summer and the Vosses moved in by October 2014. Kim says she loves the coziness of her home’s fireplaces and receives the most compliments on the great room’s floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and the grandeur of the foyer.

The personalized attention Kim received throughout the home’s construction brought her peace of mind. “They were invaluable to me,” Kim says of the Radue Homes team. “They made me feel like I was the only one they were building for when they actually had 14 other projects going on.” One of Radue’s other builds going on last summer belonged to Amy Burkett and her fiancé, Jim Lindbeck, who hired Radue Homes to construct their 3-bedroom ranch in West De Pere. Amy and Jim wanted a zero step entry home to accommodate their aging parents and make access functional. Achieving an open concept layout conducive to entertaining was also important to Amy. With grandkids on the go, Amy appreciates her distressed hardwood flooring which is forgiving to wear. From
the kitchen cabinets to the specialty granite countertops, Radue Homes assisted Amy with all facets of constructing her first new home and customizing the project to her preferences. “Building a home can be a very stressful situation and never once did I feel as if things weren’t going to be taken care of,” Amy says. “We had a lot of laughs. They took stress away from us.” Both Kim and Amy say they were able to enjoy the home building process because they had complete trust in their builder and all the subcontractors they recommended. “I still walk in and think, ‘Wow, this is mine?’” Kim says. “This was my first build and if I ever build again it will be with Radue Homes.”

Real Wedding:
Tara By Amelia Compton Wolff Photos by Shaunae Teske Photography

What do you get when you combine a short engagement, a modest budget, a crafty bride and an army of supportive friends and family? Pure magic, apparently. Neil and Tara Malaczewski, both teachers living in Green Bay, tied the knot on November 1, 2014 with St. Norbert College as their backdrop. Having only six months to plan and execute their vision, Tara and Neil called in the troops and set to work crafting their dream wedding. february 2015 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | 23
your life A story table with oodles of DIY touches helped 170 guests learn more about the couple. The birch wood pieces were hand cut by Tara’s father and used to make candles, place card and table number holders.
From the bride: We only had six months from when we got engaged until saying “I do” and, to be honest, the real wedding planning didn’t happen until I graduated with my masters at the end of June. We also had a very small budget so we had to do a ton of DIY. I would consider myself crafty, so this was fun for me! I loved the personal touches we incorporated such as having Neil’s grandfather marry us and having our close friend, Alli Gostomski, sing at our ceremony. Just having a lot of the details coming together from important people in our lives made it all feel that much more special. Our friends and family were amazing – they set up the reception without me and let me take the day to relax, so I had no idea how everything was going to come together. People talk about their weddings being their best days yet and now I see why. Seeing how willing your family and friends are to help is so unbelievably touching.

Tara’s friend and coworker created signage from repurposed wood pallets. The signs now hang in Tara and Neil’s home as a remembrance of the day.
Linda Van Lanen of Special Touch Cakes made the couple’s cake in three flavors: carrot, raspberry swirl and chocolate mint. Guests were also served cheesecake, a personal favorite of the bride.

Art Meets Heart 2015, the fifth annual community art project produced by the ARTgarage of Green Bay, asked 300 artists to paint blank metal airplanes as part of a community art piece. This collaborative project is a partnership between the ARTgarage, Austin Straubel International Airport, local businesses, nonprofit organizations and the artists who helped create the 3D sculpture. See the finished “Creativity Soars” community sculpture made from these handpainted airplanes at the Art Meets Heart gala on Thursday, February 26 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Austin Straubel International Airport. The ticketed event is a major fundraiser for the nonprofit ARTgarage and will kick-off the year-long “Creativity Soars” floor-to-ceiling exhibit in the airport’s grand lobby. Enjoy food, live music and a raffle in the upper level lounge of the airport, where you’ll meet the artists, local officials and dignitaries, sponsors, the ARTgarage board of directors and art lovers of every kind. Tickets are $25 each and available online at www.theartgarage.org, at the ARTgarage and NWTC Artisan Center, Tradewinds Art Supply or at the door. Avoiding Nuptial Nightmares Tips to remain a stress-free bride-to-be
By Meghan Diemel
Every bride goes through stress
after getting engaged, whether it takes just a few hours, or perhaps a few days. Eventually, the excitement is replaced by the continuous sounds of friends and family putting forth their opinion about everything, from flowers to filet mignon. As the list of tasks grows, Pinterest boards multiply and the time flies by, brides need to remember to make themselves a priority if they want to remain stress-free. “As a new bride myself, I remember the stresses of wedding planning all too clearly,” says Kimberly Van Abel, LCP-TL (Licensed Professional Counselor), of Prevea Behavioral Care in Green Bay. “It is definitely hard to take everyone’s input and keep everyone happy. Word to the wise: Accept that you will have to compromise on a few details.” While often family and friends are willing to step forward to help anyway they can, including financially, Van Abel cautions brides to set boundaries in regard to how much of their advice will be utilized. “At the end of the day, their opinions are greatly appreciated, but it is the bride and groom’s decision,” she states. “If for some reason there is conflict between family paying for items and what the couple wants, try to be reasonable and come to a compromise that both parties are happy with.” Jessica Hanner Weed, owner of FAB Events and Planning in Crivitz, says she can’t emphasize enough the importance of a thorough itinerary. It’s a key piece to reducing planning stress. “It’s the glue that sticks the wedding together and puts everyone on the same page,” she explains. “It’s essential to help the flow of the day, the week and weekend of the wedding.” Hanner Weed says a bride’s prior-

ity should be the wonderful memories to be made during the wedding festivities – not attempting to do everything yourself. Enlisting the help of a planner or bridesmaid to serve as the day-of contact, and letting professionals take care of most of the wedding’s details – like food and flowers – keeps unnecessary worries and hassles at bay. “As a bride you’re incredibly busy no matter what, with family and guests, so it’s really nice to have someone to field those simple questions on the day of the wedding,” she furthers. “There are so many other elements happening that a simple call to a planner or bridesmaid can take the stress off the bride.” Prolonged stress can do more than just hinder your memories of the overall nuptial experience, says Van Abel. It can lead to a condition called distress, which is the body’s negative response to stress. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, lack of motivation and problems sleeping. “Distress can cause other mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression and general moodiness,” she states. “When these things happen, we find difficulty in controlling emotional outbursts, concentration and our overall ability to prioritize and handle life’s little curve balls. “When all is said and done and the wedding is over, it isn’t about the dress, flowers or centerpieces,” adds Van Abel. “The only thing that everyone will remember is how happy the new couple is and their excitement for your new life together.”

bridal beauty The latest trends from the Mint Salon wedding hair and makeup show Story by Amelia Compton Wolff Photography by Shaunae Teske Photography
30 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | february 2015
Caroline Quinn, owner of Mint Salon in Green Bay, partnered with Petal Pusher floral boutique and Dream Lighting Company to host a bridal hair and makeup show featuring the hottest wedding day looks for 2015. Here are three of our favorite styles from the show.
20s-inspired Bride Vintage looks exploded this past year and are a beautiful way to tie your look into your overall theme. Brides love the versatility – this 20sinspired look is elegant enough for the red carpet, but could also work for a casual barn wedding. “The hairpiece here is key to pulling off this look,” Quinn says. “Working horizontal on the forehead says flapper meets boho, and locks in volume at the crown.” Lips are the focal point of this look. Strong lip colors are big this wedding season, and pairing them with vintage hair seals the deal to pulling off the look. A subtle cat eye compliments bombshell lips without losing focus.

your style Pinterest Perfect Lived-in, messy curls are trending on Pinterest and Quinn says she gets the most requests for this look. Casual updos are the perfect blend of DIY meets salon perfection. “This look can be altered by lowering the curls to the nape of the neck or softly brushing the hair to one side,” Quinn says. “Her hairpiece can also be moved, showcasing the individual style of each bride.” A classic take on bridal makeup with a slightly smoky eye won’t look out of place during a daytime ceremony. A gentle wash of gloss is the perfect way to accent the lips on a bride who doesn’t usually wear lip color.

Flower Child It’s time that the flower girl did more than throw petals. This wax flower wreath was braided into a waterfall braid that circles our flower girl’s crown. “This is a great way to jazz up a little girl with shorter hair or hair that doesn’t hold a curl as well, Quinn says. A sprinkling of blush or glittery shadow on the cheeks paired with a shear lip gloss makes little ladies feel grown up, while still remaining age appropriate. WI-5001872096

your life
After feasting on a reception dinner and toasting the happy couple with champagne, wedding guests will almost always indulge in a little something sweet to top off a celebration of love. With the traditional large wedding cake making fewer appearances these days, many newlyweds are opting for an assortment of desserts instead, such as pies, mini pastries and old-fashioned candy. “A lot of couples I meet with are wanting to serve their favorite desserts rather than a white wedding cake,” says Karlie Franzke, owner of Cake and Cookie in De Pere. “There’s a lot more personalization and variety.” One of the most popular requests Franzke gets are French macarons which happen to be one of her specialties. Unique flavors Franzke offers include spiced chai, peach champagne and toasted coconut. “While macarons are big right now, I’m also seeing a lot of smaller cakes, fruit pies and mini cheesecakes,” says Franzke. “There are more dessert tables and fewer cupcake towers.” Many couples opt for a dessert spread instead and that might be related to the way dinner is being served, according to Jennifer Bukouricz, owner of Monzù Bakery in Green Bay. “One reason people are doing a dessert buffet is because they aren’t doing the traditional sit-down dinner much anymore,” says Bukouricz. “They are choosing buffets with stations or just hors d’oeuvres. Often they want something for their guests to snack on as they dance the night away.” Aesthetically, simple and organic looking desserts are on trend this year. “Fresh flowers, rough brush strokes, and wooden discs to present cakes on are popular,” says Franzke. “I did a cake that resembled a birch tree recently.”
While many are going for the minimalist look, Franzke confirms that the classic ruffled cake will likely always stick around. “I see a lot of brides doing a dessert buffet and then also displaying a small cake,” says Bukouricz. “They don’t want to disappoint those who will be expecting a cake, because that’s generally what you have at a wedding. I tell couples to make sure it’s what they want and not what someone else wants. It is their wedding after all.” If she had to name a color of the year in regard to wedding desserts, Franzke says it would be gold. “I do a lot of gold brush strokes on cakes and have noticed gold decor at many weddings.” Another trend is using the desserts as wedding favors. “Some people are boxing up mini desserts or old-fashioned candy for guests,” says Franzke. “It’s a nice way to do two-in-one.” Some dessert trends have been inspired by the season in which a couple decides to exchange vows. “I had some clients choose pumpkin pies for their fall wedding and I’m doing salted caramel macarons with a silver shell for a January wedding,” says Franzke. As for the coming year, Bukouricz predicts the trend of unique personalization to continue. “Every couple is different and they don’t need to do what their parents, siblings, or friends did at their own weddings,” says Bukouricz. Weddings are not “one size fits all” and what better way to celebrate a bride and groom’s unique love than with something sweet for the body and soul?
