A Case for Confidence I have to hand it to our Women to Know—they are gracious, humble and up for anything, including but not limited to wearing more makeup than normal, strutting for the camera along Main Street murals, and admitting they can rap ’90s music (Miranda Paul) or wrap presents like a boss (Heather Karcz). See for yourself how amazing they are on page 8. As someone who is introduced to outstanding local women on a weekly basis, today I want to Photo by Mark Anderson. make a case for confidence. Too often we feel we are not worthy of recognition. I think that’s a natural defense on days we are discouraged, burned out and worried. Sometimes we wonder who could love us when we are crabby and irrational. We wonder if our dreams are selfish. We wonder if our abilities are good enough. As imperfect as we are, I think it would be a damn shame if we didn’t stand by our work, moods and all. We shouldn’t give a feeling or problem more power than it deserves. We are worthy of recognition. Instead of allowing setbacks and exhaustion to feed your self-doubt, imagine standing by who you are and what you do. Literally stand tall with a level chin and proud smile. Go ahead and take a photo with your work, be it a book, small business or mural on Main Street. (You might even put it on your head.) We are more than our failures and stress. Like Green Bay’s Women to Know, we are creative, hard-working and brave. We are leaders, caretakers and often stronger than we want to be. We are ordinary women who become the true heroines every day. While bumming around Pinterest the other night, I happened on this quote: “There’s only one you, and that is your power.” So I say, wield it.

STACY J.

SCHLEMMER Stacy Schlemmer, 31, is a family law attorney who advises and represents clients going through divorce, custody, child support and other family-related issues. She says she has always had a desire to help people, which she lives out through her career and her commitments to community organizations, including Service League, N.E.W. Friends of Music, De Pere Area Chamber and the Ecumenical Partnership for Housing Board of Directors. Schlemmer also offers free legal seminars on various family law topics for the public. “It’s my way of ‘giving back’ to our community and helping to educate people on their legal rights and options.” Her role model in all that she does is her mother, who passed away in 2013 from duodenal cancer. “Her courageous fight against cancer and her strong faith and determination throughout her three-year-long cancer journey inspired me to stay strong in my faith and work hard, yet enjoy life and never take it for granted,” she says.

SHAUNAE TESKE As a wedding and portrait photographer, Shaunae Teske, 25, documents the precious, important moments in people’s lives through the beauty of photography. “I truly love people, and I believe everyone has their own unique, personal story to tell, and I’ve always been fascinated by those stories,” says Teske, who started her business when she was just 20. Teske believes that if you find something you love to do, personally or professionally, it will never feel like you are working. In addition to her business, she leads the Rising Tide Society in Green Bay, a national group that brings together creatives, small business owners and entrepreneurs in the spirit of community over competition. The bibliophile and self-professed cat whisperer says she returned to the area after college in Massachusetts because she adores the community and wants to help it grow and change. “I’m so inspired by the people here,” she states. “In everything I do, I hope I’m lifting others up and helping them realize how truly wonderful they are!”

MIRANDA PAUL From her writing studio, the “Underground Lair,” author Miranda Paul, 34, writes books for children. She says she has always had a passion for stories, poetry, art and creativity. “Shared stories bring people around the world closer together, and they help us tackle tough issues or spark change in society,” says the award-winning author. Paul finds her inspiration from teachers, librarians, educators and the children they teach. “There is so much heroism to be found inside a school and so many creative ideas to be nurtured,” she states. “Kids are brighter than grown-ups often give them credit for, and they give me much hope for the future. I’m fortunate to be invited to many schools each year where I witness firsthand how intelligent, caring and absolutely hilarious children can be.” Paul, who is celebrating the release of her two newest picture books – Trainbots and 10 Little Ninjas – this summer, says she admires ordinary folks who do extraordinary things. “I often look to leading women in science for motivation and reminders of how wonder, curiosity, and perseverance lead to accomplishment and progress.”

HEATHER KARCZ Finances, organizing and planning has always been easy for Heather Karcz, 43, president of Zuehlke Karcz Financial Group. So it felt natural for her to tie those skills into a career and her community service. “It’s ironic that I help people plan for retirement, but I’m not in a hurry to retire myself because I love what I do,” she explains. “Serving on the not-for-profit credit union board goes handin-hand with providing better financial solutions to community members. I feel I have been blessed by a supportive community and I believe in giving back to that community.” In February 2015, she and her partner opened their own business as an independent financial firm of Raymond James. It’s been a successful endeavor thus far, and Karcz adheres to the idea that success follows when you take the time to listen. “God gave us one mouth and two ears for a reason – use them proportionately,” she states. “Success comes from healthy relationships. Those relationships often grow to a deeper level when one is a good listener.”

LISA MUELLER Through her work as Senior Kroc Center Officer, Lisa Mueller, 51, has fallen in love with the people of Green Bay. She says she wants to make the Kroc Center a place that makes the whole community of Green Bay healthier—“in body, soul and spirit, the way God intended.” “I consider my initial work within The Salvation Army as a calling from God to devote my life to serve those in need,” she states. “As that has expanded into work in the Kroc Center, God is continually revealing to me how comprehensive and holistic our impact can be. Serving humanity—body, soul and spirit—is the most fulfilling adventure I could have imagined.” An avid reader, Mueller says she tries to learn how to lead better every day. “I don’t take my responsibilities for granted and I feel a very strong obligation to be the best leader to my staff as I can be,” Mueller explains. “I am constantly reading and working toward developing my own leadership skills in order to serve those who work with me better.”

TYNISHA D. MEIDL Teachers face an increasingly difficult job in the classroom, and Dr. Tynisha Meidl helps future teachers learn effective methods for the K-12 setting. As Associate Professor of Education and Co-chair of the Teacher Education Department at St. Norbert College, Meidl conducts research on literacy development and service-learning in diverse classrooms in K-12 settings. She also collaborates with surrounding school districts and community partners to support the development of St. Norbert students. Meidl’s journey into education began with her grandfather, whom she says was one of her first teachers and invested in her educational experience daily. “One day I asked my grandfather why he would help me every day and invest so much time, and he responded that ‘It is the special way I teach’ that makes the difference,” she says. “I was always in awe of this special way. At that period, I knew I wanted to teach in that special way and teach others to have the patience and passion in that special way and share my love of learning with others.”

TERESA JO LeCLERCQ Teresa Jo LeClercq, 40, is a career development specialist with The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Green Bay. She leads all aspects of the Teens 2 Work job readiness program at the Club’s west side location, which introduces teens to the concept of goal setting for their future careers. But as LeClercq explains, the experience lends itself to so much more. “I have found that this is a program that gives many youth their first chance at viewing their lives as truly possible for amazing things,” she says. “Granted, it’s not always about directly planning for the future, because frankly, most of these kids are dealing with things on a daily basis that require some immediate attention, or at the very least, a level of patience that means just ‘being’ there with them in the moment and helping get through their day-to-day challenges.” Given those challenges, it goes without saying that the children she works with on a daily basis are her inspiration. “They encourage me to keep learning new things and overcome fears, even as an adult. They remind me that anything is possible…I respect and value them more than I can ever express.”

KERRY GEOCARIS After the death of her father from pancreatic cancer, life coach and motivational speaker Kerry Geocaris, 37, reached a turning point in her life. As Geocaris explains, her father was never dying, but instead, always living. “My father’s death saved my life,” she says. “It was a catalyst for my personal transformation and awakening.” During her father’s final year of life, she found her key to happiness through him. He showed her what living authentically and purposefully looked like. Geocaris then developed a process to help teach others how to self-heal and reconnect with who they are. Simply Kerry is a life coaching and consulting business for personal and entrepreneurial growth. The transformational work is founded on the Simply Kerry signature method, The Process, which teaches people self-healing and functional elevation. “I help people get back in character, and rewrite their script so they can live the life they were meant to have.”

CATHY A. DWORAK As director of community outreach and player/ alumni relations for the Green Bay Packers, Cathy Dworak, 48, is a familiar face in Green Bay and across the state. Dworak helped take the community outreach department’s impact in the community from $1.5 million in 2002 to more than $7 million in 2016. “Supporting others has always been a passion of mine,” says Dworak. “I get a thrill of being able to see that the support makes a difference to an individual or an organization.” The key to professional success, Dworak says, is to empower and cultivate the potential in others, and take a proactive approach by being organized with a well-thought-out plan. The key to personal success, she adds, is communication and relationship building. “In our fast-paced social world of Snapchat, Twitter, texts, emails, etc., we tend to forget the simple things in life like face-to-face communication. Communicate with others more by actually looking individuals in the eyes—you just may like what you see!”

Whether it was enrichment coordinator, reading incentive program coordinator, diversity program coordinator, math team coach, Destination Imagination team manager or through various roles with the parent teacher organization, they complement the strides she has made in her career. Kao-Adler, 48, also works part-time in a corporate support role with Foth. “The organizations I support revolve around education with the desire to enrich, challenge and supplement student learning,” says Kao-Adler. “My professional work is linked to my educational degree in electrical engineering.” Kao-Adler says she is lucky to have people around her who encompass traits she admires and strives to emulate. “My friend Sarah teaches me about honoring others; my daughter’s strong sense of self and creativity teaches me to be more sure of my capabilities; my son teaches me to trust my instincts as a parent; my husband teaches me to be more selfless; but perhaps, my mom’s voice is in my head more frequently in all situations of life,” she states.

successful, and I wanted it so bad to work that I just worked and worked and worked,” she adds. “And here we are, 11 years later.” Pierquet also started her own line of handbags, upcycled from used men’s ties, jackets and other articles of clothing. “I have been sewing since the age of 13,” she says. “I collected all my babysitting money, bought my own sewing machine and I taught myself to sew. I love to design things. It’s just something I’ve always had in me. I thought, since I’ve got this talent, I’m just going to start to make things for my store.” Her one-of-a-kind designs are sold under the Josie T. Designs moniker, and they often mean more to the recipient than just another handbag. “We’ll have customers who lost a husband or a father, or a grandfather, and I have women bring me their ties and I design something for them and make them into a purse,” she explains. Reflecting on what makes entrepreneurship worth the hard work, Pierquet says owning her own business has given her the opportunity to be more involved with community. “I had no clue what goes on in Green Bay,” she says. “Because I’ve had to get out and I’ve had to network, I cannot believe the different organizations that are around. I volunteer a lot of time, and I have met so many people that I would have never met in a million years if I was at my other job.” Pierquet says there are perks to being your own boss, though the hours are long. “There are not too many people who can say that they shop for a living, and enjoy what they do,” she says. “I gave up a lot. I had a really good job, but you know what? I’m happier. I’m a lot happier. I went through a lot to get where I am and it was very, very stressful, but it all worked out. “You get what you put in,” she adds. “You get out what you put in.”

JOSEPHINE’S ATTIC IS A CREATIVE OUTLET FOR PIERQUET STORY BY MEGHAN DIEMEL | PHOTOS BY MIKE PETERS Gift shops each try to have their own personality, style and intended audience. For Josephine’s Attic in Green Bay, owner Tina Pierquet has infused the store with her own style of fashion and design creativity. Creativity and an eye for design helped Pierquet make the leap from working for a distribution company for 18 years to owning her own business in 2004. She and her husband Chris bought the 1950s era home built by her grandfather, and owned previously by her late aunt and uncle, and turned it into Josephine’s Attic Gifts and Décor. The store, named in honor of her grandmother, specializes in unique gift ideas, including women’s apparel and fashion accessories, jewelry, handbags, scarves, wine, gourmet foods, candles, lotions and seasonal décor. Pierquet also specializes in meaningful gift baskets for customers and corporate clients. “It’s a place to come if you’re looking for that unusual gift that you’re not going to see everywhere else,” Pierquet says. During the business’ infancy, Pierquet worked for three additional years part-time for her former employer, Jonas Service & Supply, while running Josephine’s full-time. When the recession hit, Pierquet says she learned hard, but valuable, lessons about business. “The one thing that really hurt me is I didn’t have any marketing experience,” she explains. “You really need to know marketing when you’re starting a business. I learned as I went. I started joining organizations, talking to people and meeting different business owners. It really was a trial and error. “I had a passion for what I was doing, and I wanted to be 20 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | JULY 2016

We’re soaking up this midsummer haze and loving every sunshine-filled second. It’s these deliciously sweltering days that cultivate our obsession with clothes that make us feel like we’re on a permanent vacation—bright kaleidoscope colors and tropical splashy prints that lift us gently from our Wisconsin beaches and deposit us in wildly exotic locations. 22 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | JULY 2016

Heatwave style has us euphorically giddy, dreaming of sunset mai-tais in St. Martin and turquoise water lapping at our feet, and we’re all about that tempting tease of island ambience. This statement-making trend has us loving our clothes all over again this season.

your style We’re loving both the higher waistline and the newagain culottes silhouette, especially on our tall, leggy friends. Pair your high-waisted bottom with a cropped blouse and bare those golden shoulders for an al fresco dinner date. Eyelet lace looks absolutely beautiful with a romantic botanical print, keeping the tropical trend a little more subdued and soft. ON PAIGE TOP AND PANTS, ZARA JEWELRY, IMPORTED FROM SOUTH AFRICA

If you’re feeling a little shy, skip the wild prints and colors and pile on the accessories instead! We’re all about beaded bangles and firmly believe, the more the merrier! Warning. It’s addictive.

TO HELP YOU STAY YOUR BEST ALL SUMMER BY COLLEEN RIORDAN

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Weekend Warriors “During the summer, many people take on this whole weekend warrior mentality,” says athletic trainer Maureen Riordan. After sitting at work all week, people are eager to connect with family and friends through outdoor sports. However, shifting from inactive to active is hard on your body. “That’s when people tend to get hurt. It’s when a weekend softball tournament turns into a trip to the emergency room because they tore something,” she adds. To prevent injuries, do a dynamic warmup. That means stretching through constant movement like a light jog or active stretches.

“One way to stay extra hydrated this summer is by incorporating fresh seasonal fruits into your diet,” says dietitian Emily Abegglen. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies recommends getting 20 percent of your water intake through food. Many fruits and vegetables are high in water content. Watermelons, cucumbers, strawberries and celery are all made up of more than 90 percent water. Even better, they contain natural sugars, minerals salts and vitamins which aid in the rehydration process.

MENTAL HEALTH

Take Time to Recharge “One of the biggest challenges in summer is trying to not overschedule yourself,” says therapist Chelsea McGuire. “We all do it, but then you don’t get the time needed to recharge.” She recommends setting aside time for yourself or with one other person at least once a weekend. Use this time to relax and decompress. Do something that allows your mind to turn off for a short while. Go for a walk, watch a movie or read a book. Taking time for yourself allows you to re-energize and be at your best the rest of the week.

Gathering Place 20th Anniversary

1 4

PHOTOS AND TEXT BY MIKE PETERS

With a calendar always filled with a variety of support groups, activities and classes, The Gathering Place is a superlative recovery center for adults living with mental illness. It recently celebrated two decades of service with an open house at its 1001 Cherry Street location and a blues concert at Joannes Park. We stopped by the latter to show you some of those who were there to celebrate and support this important community resource. For more information, visit

www.thegatheringplaceinc.com Check out facebook.com/youmag for more photos from this event. 30 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | JULY 2016
