Your wedding, your way I’ve dubbed 2014 as the Year of the Wedding. Within the 12 months from September 2013 to September 2014, six friends of mine have gotten or will get hitched. I guess that would make 12 friends, actually, and some family thrown in for good measure. This past fall I witnessed a 1920s-themed union in Portland, Oregon where the couple rented out several beautiful lodges for all their guests to stay the weekend. Later that month, I helped celebrate a wedding on Halloween, complete with costumes. I can now say I attended a wedding dressed as a piece of pizza. Then, two friends eloped in Las Vegas on April Fool’s Day. They will host an afternoon reception locally in July. In August, I’ll attend a sweetly simple barn wedding and I’ll be the matron of honor in my college roommate’s intimate wedding ceremony on the water in Minocqua. Then in September, I’ll stand up in my brother and future sister-inlaw’s ceremony, with an epic party sure to follow because that’s how they roll. What I absolutely love about all this, minus the ample excuses to party, is that no two of these celebrations look anything alike. Gone are the days of cookiecutter weddings. Couples today hold on to the traditions that make sense for them and ditch the ones that don’t. Ten bridesmaids? Great. No bridesmaids? Awesome. Open bar, cash bar, no bar? All perfect depending on the couple. So, whether you are getting married yourself or you are helping someone else plan their big day, I hope this issue makes getting to the altar just a little easier. Want to look and feel your best before you say “I do?” Check out Bridal Bootcamp (page 18) for menu tips to get wedding day ready. FOX 11â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Emily Deem goes with her gut when it comes to, well, pretty much everything

When Emily Deem gets a feeling – that undeniable kind of hunch that originates as much in your head as your heart – watch out.

The 28-year-old Good Day Wisconsin anchor, live reporter and bride-to-be has always had a sort of sixth sense. Call it intuition or call it instinct, Deem’s track record is pretty impressive. “I feel like I am an intuitive person,” Deem admits. “I know when things feel wrong and I know when they feel right.” Exhibit A: the Crystal Ballroom inside Green Bay’s Riverside Ballroom where Deem now sits, a three-inch thick wedding planning binder stuffed to the brim with to-do lists and Pinterest printouts lays on the table in front of her. Something about the ballroom spoke to Deem, so much so that she promptly booked it for her wedding reception shortly after getting engaged in February last year. “I just love the feeling of it,” Deem gushes, looking overhead. “The chandeliers, gosh! The ceilings are my favorite. I knew right away that I wanted the reception here. It just felt right.” Deem pauses, fully aware it’s about the fourth time her penchant for premonitions has come up. “Again, there’s that feeling! Seriously, what is happening?” she laughs. That feeling Deem gets which leads to swift and unwavering decisions didn’t just happen with her reception venue. It happened with the ceremony site (Parallel 44 Vineyard & Winery in Kewaunee). It happened with her dress (vintageinspired, and that’s all she’ll say). It happened with her bridal party (her three sisters, future sister-in-law and best friend from college).

But these are relatively small details when you consider that feeling led her to a career in television news and, later, to the man she would marry.

Early mornings, bright lights The St. Cloud, Minnesota native knew since she was in the 10th grade that a career in broadcast journalism was her destiny. The turning point was the day her father took her to her favorite television station, KARE 11 in Minneapolis, to see their live morning show. “We get there and I just remember walking into the studio and I instantly knew this is what I wanted to do,” Deem recalls. “It clicked that day. I felt comfortable and excited, like I should be there even though I was in 10th grade.” Deem attended St. Cloud State University and

majored in broadcast journalism with a minor in theater. After she graduated in 2009, she accepted a position with a small television station in Alexandria, Minnesota. “It was a great start because I had to do everything – produce, anchor, report, everything,” Deem says. “It gave me that experience for the next step in my career.” As it would turn out, about a year later that next step would land her in Green Bay. Deem had found the position with FOX 11 online and quickly applied. “Even though I grew up in Minnesota, I actually lived in Green Bay for a year when I was three years old because my dad was transferred for work,” says Deem, who even remembers celebrating her birthday at Bay Beach. “So when I came for my interview it felt like there was a connection.”

It didn’t take long for that tell-tale feeling to come creeping in. “After I f lew into town and got picked up, we were driving down Lombardi Ave and I got, no lie, the same feeling I did when I walked into the studio at KARE 11. When we passed by Lambeau Field, it felt so right. I was all by myself in a different state, I didn’t know anybody, but it just felt right.” For the last four years, Deem has been the impossibly highspirited live reporter and, more recently, weekend anchor that greets us bright and early on FOX 11’s morning show Good Day Wisconsin. This means her days start well before sunrise. “I get up for work at 2 a.m., so I try to go to bed by 8 p.m. I work Wednesday through Sunday so I’ve had to really discipline myself,” Deems says. Viewers might be surprised to learn that Deem is responsible for a lot of the leg work behind setting up the live shots they see. “When we are done with the day’s show, then we are working on setting up the next day,” Deem says. “I’m constantly making calls and setting up live shots. My phone never leaves my side. You never know what could happen. You always have to be ready for that breaking news.” The ever-changing work environment is one of the aspects Deem most enjoys about her job, even when it means things don’t go exactly as planned. “I got hit in the head with a basketball once when I was out with the Neenah basketball team live on air. You just shake it off. What you have to do is make fun of yourself. You really do,” Deem says. “That’s what I love about it though, you never know what’s going to happen.”

That loving feeling It might be hard to believe, but this woman who openly admits to being a slightly obsessed Pinterest wedding pinner never really saw herself tying the knot – maybe the only time her infamous intuition was a bit off. “I just didn’t see it for myself, maybe because I wasn’t with the right person yet,” Deem says. “When I met Bryan, everything changed.” Deem has her job to thank for her chance encounter with now fiancé, Bryan Hansen. “We were having this workout challenge where they picked 11 people from FOX 11 and I applied for it,” Deem says. “At that time Bryan was a trainer at the West Side YMCA in Howard.” Deem turned in her application at the YMCA and Bryan was

Q & A with the Groom Bryan weighs in on his fiancé… What’s your favorite quality about Emily? She has a bunch of great qualities, but my favorite quality about Emily is how genuine she really is. What you see is what you get with her. She’s kind-hearted, honest, and hard-working and all my friends and family love her!

What do you think married life will be like? I think it’ll be fun. I’m sure it’ll have its challenges but as long as we keep working together like we have been these past couple years, everything will be great!

When did you know Emily was the woman you wanted to marry? Pretty early on I thought Emily was someone I could see myself spending the rest of my life with. There wasn’t really one day that it clicked, it was just an accumulation of a bunch of things: how she treated me and other people, how well she got along with my family and friends, how close she was with her family. Everything just adds up to her being the perfect person for me.

Emily was at home getting ready for a wine tasting at Rookies Bar & Grill in Denmark, lamenting about having nothing to wear. When she came downstairs, Bryan offered her “something else to wear” as he got down on one knee and whipped out the ring. “The proposal was honestly how we are. It was so laidback, but so cute.”

Downtown Minneapolis will set the stage for Emily’s last hurrah as a single lady which will include dinner out, a hotel stay and, of course, dancing. “I really just want to dance! I don’t get to normally with my schedule.”

“We haven’t picked a spot yet, but we want to go somewhere warm like the Virgin Islands or Jamaica.” All Emily knows is that they are taking off on their adventure the Monday following the wedding. “Everyone says you got to take that time to enjoy it and take that time right away.”

<<< spotlight continued from page 11 the trainer who was assigned to give her a tour of the facility. “He showed me the equipment, but then he actually made me workout. He made me do sit-ups!” Deem remembers. The two connected on Facebook after their impromptu workout and spent some time talking before going on their first date which consisted of walking the track at the East Side YMCA, shopping at Festival Foods and dining at Subway. “We are so exciting,” says Deem as she rolls her eyes. “We aren’t elaborate people.” After about two years of dating, the couple is now planning a fall wedding for 450 guests – maybe the most elaborate “date” in their history. The vintage winery themed fete was inspired by the ceremony site, Parallel 44 Winery. Deem’s mother, who works as a pastry chef in Minnesota, will be baking a classic three-tier wedding cake with buttercream frosting. Lots of other personal touches will be incorporated throughout the day, like during the unity ceremony. “We are going to be pouring sand from my dad’s golf course in Min-

nesota and sand from Maribel Park where Bryan grew up,” Deem says. “That was Bryan’s idea. He got points for that.” One of the things Deem loves most about her fiancé, who is the recreation and aquatic director for the School District of Sheboygan Falls, is how he balances her personality. “He’s so opposite from me. He’s so laidback, he doesn’t make a big deal about things. I make a big deal about everything. He calms me down. He’s my biggest supporter,” Deem says. “And he’s cute.” Given all that, the future Mrs. Hansen (don’t worry, she’ll still be Emily Deem on air) is more than ready to make it official this fall. Although she admits that the true weight of a wedding had escaped her until she began envisioning her own. “Weddings are a celebration of two people coming together and spending the rest of their lives together. I never really grasped that when I was younger. I guess I’m just excited that now it’s my time,” Deem says breathlessly. “Goodness gracious.”

A bride-to-be wants to look her best for her wedding – that certainly goes without saying. From great hair and makeup to the perfect dress, it’s important to look great on the outside, but just as essential to feel good on the inside as well.

Though losing weight is often the first thing newly engaged gals think about, Rosalyn Haase, RDN, CDE, MPH, BC-ADM with Prevea Health, says it’s crucial to determine if the weight loss is even necessary, and if it is something the bride’s primary doctor thinks is appropriate. From there, set realistic expectations. “Studies say that losing 5 to 10 percent of your starting weight, if you’re overweight, over six months time would be considered realistic,” says Haase. “Being at a healthy weight is what allows you

to eat well, satisfy your appetite and maintain the weight that you feel comfortable at. Realistic rates of weight loss are probably no more than two pounds per week. For women it’s wonderful sometimes to shoot for half a pound.” Regan Kust, personal training specialist with Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine, says she advises those who wish to lose weight to make fitness a priority. “Food is just a piece of the puzzle – exercise and nutrition go hand and hand. Put the exercise on your schedule as if it’s a work meeting that you can’t skip. You need to eat to maintain the high-energy output as well. A lot of brides go into starvation mode, and that’s not ideal at all.” Kust adds that early morning exercise times can be helpful to set a schedule. “Just get it done and out of the way,” she says. “I feel that puts you in a mindset that you need to make healthier choices throughout the day; you’re wellness minded.” Apps like MyFitnessPal and Lose It! go great lengths to help brides keep track of food intake and exercise output. Planning ahead for meals, eating 24-30 grams of protein at each meal and having healthy snacks on hand can help avoid calorie pitfalls. Haase says focusing on healthy, mindful eating and regular physical activity – instead of weight loss – can help make short-term changes turn into long-term habits. “We know that research shows that short-term diets are not tailored to an individual’s lifestyle or to her food preferences and do not produce sustained weight loss,” says Haase. “You can lose weight, but once you get there, what have you learned and how do you maintain that? “Not everyone’s body type is designed to look like a fashion model, despite the messages from the media,” she adds. “We have to remember that healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes.” Skogen’s Festival Foods’ Lauren Lindsley, RDN, CD and regional manager, Green Bay, also reminds brides to drink water – and often! “Water is necessary for every single metabolic process in the body,” she explains. “It is essential to digest and absorb nutrients and vitamins. Water can improve energy, increase mental and physical performance, remove toxins and waste from the body, keep skin healthy and glowing, and even help lose weight.” As far as how much water a bride should strive for, that depends on a few factors. “Water needs depend on … how active you are, your health and the climate. The Institute of Medicine determined that an Adequate Intake (AI) for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages per day. This includes water, milk, tea, juice and coffee. When it comes to beverages, water is your best bet since its calorie free and readily available.” Finally, remember to ask for help in your journey – enlist the help of the soon-to-be spouse. “Don’t go through it alone,” advises Kust. “You’ll be sharing your life together and you want to have a healthy lifestyle, so develop those habits together.”

Keeping it Simple Wedding planning doesn’t have to be stressful. One bride shows us how. By Hannah Darling

Hannah Darling is a freelance writer and new mother living in Appleton with her fiancé. Hannah studied creative writing and technical writing at Southern Oregon University, but found herself following her father’s footsteps into the world of journalism after graduation. She loves being able to write from home while planning her wedding and caring for her sweet son, Silas.

When I was young I didn’t spend much time fantasizing about my wedding day, the puffy white dress, or bouquets of peonies and baby’s breath. So, when my fiancé proposed to me, I really had no idea where to start. The stressful task of planning a wedding was daunting. Almost a year later, I am getting married on August 16 and the process has been smooth, full of ease and even fun – everything I thought it wouldn’t be. To keep our wedding vision simple and on-task, which is easier said than done with the array of charming wedding inspiration on Pinterest and Etsy, we chose those aspects of our wedding we wanted to put more money into and those we could do on our own that had the soul we envisioned. Though we won’t know exactly what our wedding looks like until it comes to fruition, we are imagining something romantic, rustic, soft, homemade, comfortable, yet elegant and vintage with a slight Victorian touch.

The investments

My heart was set on our venue, so we booked that early on. We chose to have our wedding at Woelfel Farm in New Holstein, not far from the small Wisconsin town where we met. Our ceremony will be outdoors and the reception will be in a beautiful, old barn. Rustic farm weddings are on-trend right now, but we love the simplicity of the venue and we chose it because it represents part of our story – we met and were engaged in a rural place and thought it fitting to celebrate our marriage there too. We treasure photos and knew we wanted to hire a professional photographer who was enthusiastic about the style of our wedding. I was looking for someone who would capture our wedding in a whimsical, soft and sweet style. There are some details I want make sure we caught in this style, such as the mismatched vintage china we’ll use for cake plates and a guest book signing station featuring an old typewriter. I love stationary and invitations were something we wanted to put a lot of thought into. I found an independent artist on Etsy who has a beautiful online shop. We hired her to personalize some invitations for us, but to keep things simple we decided to have our guests RSVP online at our wedding website.

I decided on a simple flower arrangement and after talking with a few florists, I realized it would be easy and cost efficient to do flowers on our own. I’ve been collecting vintage milk glass vases from thrift stores which we will use for our centerpieces. We are planning to buy flowers in bulk, or possibly from the Downtown Appleton Farm Market this summer.

We also decided to take the music into our own hands. Rather than hiring a band, we are planning on putting a sound system and an iPod in the barn so we can enjoy a playlist of our favorite songs and artists. While having your closest friends stand next to you as you say your vows is a special memory, we decided to forego the bridal party to keep things simple, knowing our friends and family would still be just as big a part of our ceremony as we are keeping our ceremony intimate and having our guests sit on picnic blankets in front of an arbor where we’ll say our vows.

Staying true to simple

The most important factor in keeping our wedding simple and low-stress has been our commitment to stay true to who we are and what we want our big day to feel like. This isn’t always easy. When planning a wedding that is anything but traditional, you get a few puzzled looks when explaining that your guests will be sitting on picnic blankets during the ceremony and that there won’t be a bridal party. But again, this is what makes our wedding about our love, and we’ve been greeted with an equal amount of enthusiasm and excitement. I’ve learned that as simple as you try to make your wedding, there still is a lot to check off your to-do list. And I think that’s okay. It’s a big day. We want it to be special. But having this “keep it simple” mantra has helped us to stay focused on what our wedding day is really about – our love, our friends and our families. We aren’t aiming for traditional and we aren’t aiming for unique. We’re aiming for us and that is what has made this process enjoyable, free of stress and full of creativity.

If you live in Northeastern Wisconsin long enough, it’s a good bet you will attend a late Saturday afternoon wedding soiree followed by a family style meal of broasted chicken and mashed potatoes. But through the creativity of area event planners, caterers and brides themselves, alternatively timed weddings with imaginative menu choices are gaining in popularity. Alliey Kline, owner of sash&bow in Green Bay, says the latest trends include Sunday brunches, heavy appetizers on Fridays or “food truck” weddings. “For brunch we love the idea of mixing scrumptious pastries with a brunch menu, served with a mimosa station and gourmet coffees,” she suggests. “For the food truck weddings or heavy appetizer

weddings, how fun is it to have mini sliders, pizzas, ice cream and cakes? Some local food trucks include: Simmer (Milwaukee); Thibby’s Ice Cream; Rustique Vagabond Pizza Wagon and Eggs N’ Bacon Wagon.” Kline adds that local caterers Not By Bread Alone, Three Three Five and Runaway Spoon can do amazing small brunch weddings, while locations like family homes and private parks make great nontraditional sites for weddings. Kate Hess, of Seize the Day Events in Green Bay, remembers a uniquely timed wedding she helped plan a few years ago in Door County. It was held over several days and included an intimate ceremony and dinner for im-

The Thursday event was a neutral-colored and natural themed, featuring wood elements, chiffon and lace. Saturday’s “classic ’40s” theme was highlighted by Big Band music to start the night. Guests mingled and danced the night away as they noshed on bites from a seafood bar and other food stations. “There were no speeches, there was no wedding party; it made it so much more about the couple,” says Hess. “It was about celebrating what they had done and where they were headed. “In some aspects it was like a typical wedding, but I liked how it had these different elements that made it unique and special to them,” she adds. “For them, having that intimate ceremony and reception before the big bash I think was very personal and memorable for them. What a smart thing to do and what a great way to celebrate with your family.” Kline agrees that there are many advantages to putting a different spin on a wedding. With 10 nontraditional weddings planned for 2014, she sees a defined movement away from the formal, sit-down meal. It can mean lower guest counts and lead to more intimate locations and details. “It is so nice for guests to mingle with each other and sit amongst lounge furniture, stand at cocktail tables, roam in the garden and just be comfortable,” she says. “We love using a quartet, acoustic guitarist or harp for low-key, high style and detailed brunches. “And why not have a blast of a party with a live band if 28 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | JUNE 2014

you are going with a low-key food truck or heavy appetizer wedding,” she furthers. Saving money is another bonus if you’re planning a brunch meal, says Hess. There may be better availability for venues as well, since some locations will double book events for the same day. People don’t drink as much during the day either, she explains, which further cuts cost. Hess warns there can be disadvantages brides should be aware of, however. “It takes a while to get ready, so if you have your event in the morning, you have less time to get ready for pictures and things like that,” she says. “Some venues will charge you a fee for the day regardless if your wedding is in the morning or afternoon, so you may not get any better deal. It needs to be on a weekend, otherwise people would have to take off work and it might be harder for people coming in from out of town if they don’t want to spend the night.” But, if the bride and groom are comfortable stepping outside the norm for their nuptials, says Hess, the benefits can outweigh any disadvantages. “It takes all the jitters out of it. So Saturday when everybody comes, you’re not nervous. You’re there to celebrate. There’s no pressure, it’s just a good time.”

Petal Pusher Relocates • Petal Pusher Floral Boutique recently put down roots in Green Bay’s Broadway District at 119 N. Broadway. Their new location, which was formerly D.I.Y. Studio, opened on March 26. The boutique has been operated by owner Nichole Campbell for the last eight years and was previously Kase y and B en Ph otogra located at 1303 S. Webster Avenue. ph y LL C Campbell had been interested in relocating the shop to the Broadway District for several years. “First and foremost, it was about the community of businesses that exist down here and the interaction between them,” says Campbell, who has been providing table centerpieces for other Broadway businesses including Kavarna Coffeehouse and Café Madrid since relocating. “We can collaborate with the businesses and interact with more people.” Campbell and her staff, including one other full-time employee and four part-time employees, are enjoying a more collaborative environment and are looking forward to hosting a booth at Farmers Market on Broadway this summer. Campbell has already noticed an increase in foot traffic to the store. “We definitely have a lot more walk-in traffic which has been really fun for us as a staff,” Campbell says. “Whether they leave with something or not, it’s fun for them to see what we are working on.” Stop by Petal Pusher’s new space to check out the expanded offerings in spa and gourmet food products with a focus on locally-sourced items. De Pere Movies in the Park • A new outdoor movie series is lighting up the night in De Pere this summer. Movies in the Park, a free and familyfriendly outdoor movie series in downtown De Pere, kicked off on June 6 with a showing of “The Wizard of Oz.” Upcoming titles include “Back to the Future” (PG) on June 27, “The Princess Bride” (PG) on July 25 and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” (PG-13) on August 22. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or beach chairs and join the fun on the hill by the De Pere Community Center (600 Grant Stree, De Pere) for the free movie showings. In case of rain, the party moves inside the Community Center. All films begin when the sun goes down, at approximately 8:30 p.m. in June and July, and 8 p.m. in August.
