Do you have heavy periods? If you do, you could have a bleeding disorder. A bleeding disorder is a condition that keeps your blood from clotting properly after a cut or injury. Women may notice the symptoms because of heavy or abnormal bleeding during menstrual periods as well as after childbirth.

you magazine staff
Rise of the Fearless Fashionista I’ve always admired fashion risk-takers – women who move from maxi to moccasin to mini dress all in the same week. Those friends you run into and have to do a double-take because their hair has transformed from platinum blonde to rich auburn in the three days since you’ve seen them. Alas, I am not one of them. I could easily wear the same black leggings, long sweater and boots for the entirety of fall. In fact, if it weren’t for the societal standard of washing your clothes, I just might. I find a groove and I relish in it. Deeply. Plus, trying new things with your appearance is scary. What if you look silly? What if people stare? What if you discover you actually detest leather sweatpants (yes, they exist)? That could all happen. But a new season seems like the perfect time to turn a new leaf in the fashion department and try some new things. Maybe you feel the same way. If so, I invite you to take the pledge I recently took. You know, for moral support: I, (your name), solemnly vow to not be afraid of fabric. Life is too short. On this date, I pledge to have more fun with fashion, to fearlessly embrace the styles I want to try and have fun doing it. I promise to not feel bad for skipping a trend that isn’t for me, but also to move outside my comfort zone and experiment – even if it’s just a little. Here are some things you might try: • Transition shorts for cooler weather by layering them over tights. • Take a cue from our cover woman, Laura Hawk, and rock a fedora like nobody’s business. See her style tips on page 10. • Try out one of fall’s more whimsical trends: capes. • Experiment with bold color on your nails or lips. Check out some metallic makeup tips on page 24. • Buy one item from a boutique you’ve never been to. Turn to our Boutique Directory (pg. 18) for some ideas. I’d love to see what fashion-forward moves you make this season. Snap a picture and tag us on Instagram and Twitter @YOUMagGreenBay. I promise I will too. Fearlessly yours,

Every woman needs a sense of humor when she is confronted with her high school style. Laura Hawk is no exception. “I’ve seen pictures where I was wearing bell bottoms and a cropped bandana-looking top,” she says with a slight shudder. “Good Lord, that looked terrible.” It’s hard to imagine the 31-year-old looking anything but effortlessly chic. Even when she is fresh from the gym, her long, honey-blonde hair cascades gracefully over her shoulders. A bright pink tank top accentuates what remains of her summer tan. “As I get older, I try to buy more timeless pieces that are good quality that I’m not going to put in the Goodwill pile by next year,” she says. Laura’s come a long way since high school. Thankfully, the same can be said for her husband of eight years A.J. Hawk, a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. “A.J. had terrible fashion when I met him. He will tell you himself,” says Laura, who met her husband through a mutual friend while she was attending California State University-Los Angeles for broadcasting and he was attending Ohio State University. “He wore the same red f leece shirt with big, baggy wide-leg jeans every time we went anywhere.” You can imagine how concerning this must have been for a woman whose current coffee table reading includes Miles Redd’s “The Big Book of Chic” and compendiums
Laura Hawk dances with her 3-year-old daughter, Lennon.

On Trend
Fall fashions Laura is loving: Jewel tones. The thing I love
about fall the most is the deep hues that people do in jackets and shoes. I love the plums and the emeralds and all the jewel tones are my absolute favorite because I’m a natural brunette so those are tones that will look better on me.
Leopard print. I wouldn’t nec-
essarily wear a whole outfit of it, but I love popping a leopard cami with black pants or jeans and I love leopard heels. I think they are so cute.
Layers of gold. I’m real big
into gold jewelry now and layering necklaces. I have a gold bar necklace that has my area code from back home in Ohio on it. I layer that with a long chain, a couple bangles and some little studs. It makes it personal and it’s something you can hand down to your kids to show them where mom grew up.
Accessories galore. I absolutely love accessorizing. I love wearing fedora hats. I always have on chunky necklaces, big earrings, an armful of bracelets and a belt.
like “In Vogue: An Illustrated History of the World’s Most Famous Fashion Magazine.” “But A.J.’s really come into his own with fashion. He’s come further than I thought he would. He wears skinny jeans,” she continues, the approval clearly palpable in her tone. “He’s got this crazy shaved up the sides Mohawk. He’s very trendy now.” We’re betting his wife may have had a little something to do with that. (Although, for the record, she was hesitant when A.J.

chopped his signature locks in 2012, but now admits she likes the change.) Chances are Laura’s born and bred style inf luence eventually rubbed off on her husband. “I come from a family that loves fashion. My brother has more clothes than the average woman,” jokes Laura, whose mother and grandmother both owned clothing stores in her home state of Ohio. She inherited that
stylish entrepreneurial spirit and now runs her own interior design firm, LCH Interiors.

But it’s more than just style with Laura – the wife, mother and business owner has plenty of substance too. Chris Kocken, director of volunteer services for St. Vincent Hospital, met Laura soon after she arrived in Green Bay in 2006. Laura was interested in becoming a “cuddler,” a hospital volunteer who rocks babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) when parents can’t be present. “We put her to work cuddling babies,” Kocken says. “I think it was a positive experience for her and A.J. too actually.” It must have been, because the Hawks have been supporters of St. Vincent Hospital ever since, even sponsoring a fundraiser that benefited the NICU. “The cuddling program kind of helped my fix because [A.J. and I] wanted to wait a few years before having kids,” she says. Laura is now mom to 3-year-old daughter, Lennon and 18-month-old son, Hendrix. The Hawks are hoping for two or three more children, with dreams of international adoption, to complete their family. Kocken says Laura is a leader among the Packer wives in terms of her community involvement and encouraging other women to get involved. “Laura has a ‘we can do this’ attitude,” Kocken says. “She’s one of the most bubbly, positive people I’ve run into.” That personality will come in handy as Laura struts her stuff during St. Vincent’s Fashions from the Heart fall fashion show on Tuesday, September 30 at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center. “You get a sneak peak at what’s going to be big this fall,” she says. “It’s exciting to see how you can dress for a wide range of ages. It’s not just for 20 and 30 year olds, but for women in their 40s, 50s and 60s too. It’s just a fun filled night.” The event will feature fashions from local boutiques including Azure, Besselli, Furs and Clothing of Distinction, hey daisy!, J. Hilburn, Lady Savannah and The Ultimate Closet.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the addition of a Hybrid Operating Room to St. Vincent Hospital’s Heart & Vascular Center.
Laura’s Look Book What you’ll find Mrs. Hawk donning for special occasions this season:
Date Night:
If I’m going out on a date with A.J. for the night I might throw on a cute little dress with some heels or booties.
Game Day:
A lot of the wives dress up for game day because it’s our big event for the week. I’ll wear a cool, long sweater or a shift dress with boots and tights. Besselli is more my look for game day – leggings, layers and scarves.
Party Time:
If we go to a birthday party for one of A.J.’s teammates I might do something from Azure - leather pants, a cool bomber jacket with a neat top underneath and heels.

The state-of-the-art operating room would feature a catheterization lab and interventional radiology suite within a fully-equipped operating room. This allows teams of physicians from various specialties to work together to perform complex, combined procedures less invasively. For the patient this means less pain, a quicker recovery and, in certain situations, a lower risk of complications. “When I started volunteering [at St. Vincent Hospital], I learned about the amazing technology they are bringing in there. A lot of this fundraising is going towards making it a really elite hospital in the area, so we try to support it as much as possible,” Laura says. “We want everyone here to have great health care and be able to get the same care you can get in big cities. That’s what St. Vincent’s is trying to do.”

Our beloved fall season
Story and photos by Kirsty Gungor of loveliesinmylife.com. Shot on location at Angelina Italian Restaurant, Green Bay. Hair and makeup provided by Salon Fifty Four, Green Bay. Special thanks to Broken Spoke Bike Studio (orange bike), Carissa Sosnowski (pink bike) and Ebb & Flow Flowers for loaning props.
is always a feast for the senses, drawing us outdoors to savor all that beauty, in warmly layered outfits that keep us comfy, cozy and oh so happy. This season we’re inspired by the swinging ‘60s, allowing mod to be our muse. We’re showing a little leg, loving that shorter hemline, and crushing on bright colors and bold patterns. Let’s not forget the gorgeous Twiggy cat eye and bombshell Bardot hair, inspirations for those perfect little touches that create a fresh new look for fall.
Mad Love for Leopard
This leopard print dress is an easy combination of style and comfort. It pairs perfectly with a ruffled black cardigan in a longer duster length, adding a toasty layer when you’re off to meet a friend for a coffee and walk in the park. Shannon Melott, owner of Wear180 Resale in Green Bay, is excited about interesting combinations of color for fall. She shares that deep, passionate colors paired with greys and blacks are the choice of statement makers and head turners while complimentary colors tend to be the favorites of laid back, deep thinkers. Shannon’s favorite look for fall would be a dress paired with leggings, a cozy cardigan and rugged leather boots. Dress, $9. Sweater, $8. Purse, $12. Boots, $150, from Vanderloop Shoes. september 2014 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | 15

A Shock of Orange
It’s the brighter, spicier shades of the season that really stand out. A peppery orange is the quintessential fall color, seen here in the flattering lines of a figure hugging dress. We’ve added a fun pair of eyewear as an unusually beautiful accessory for fall. Megan Melendy, co-owner of Green Bay’s Besselli, shares some of their favorite trends for fall. “We are over the-moon excited for the comeback of the floor length duster. Even if you are sporting sweatpants and a T-shirt, the duster can give your look an instant upgrade!” Besselli’s favorite look would include a pair of broken in boyfriend jeans, a cozy sweater, a cute pair of booties and a chunky scarf. Dress, $128. Purse, $98. Eyeglasses, $152. Necklace, $318. Boots, $190 from Vanderloop Shoes.
16 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | september 2014
The Oversized Cardigan
There’s something incredibly appealing about an oversized sweater. Perhaps it’s the promise to envelop yourself in all that cozy goodness and never emerge! As seen here, this silhouette lends itself not only to comfort, but also style. Jill Zelzer, fashion manager at A Bag Lady in Green Bay, says some of her favorite fall trends include short boots, fringe accents and pops of fun color. Jill shares that she can’t live without a great scarf or necklace when accessorizing for fall. A Bag Lady takes pride in working with each individual customer in achieving a look that they want and love -- whether you’re heading to homecoming or out with friends. Shawl, $39. Dress, $52. Purse, $37. Boots, $145 from Vanderloop Shoes.

your mind your spirit
Melissa Gorzelanczyk is a young adult author who lives in Green Bay with her husband and two stepchildren. Her debut novel, ARROWS, is coming from Random House/Delacorte Press, 2016. She is represented by agent Carrie Howland of Donadio & Olson.
Accessorizing Your Spirit By Melissa Gorzelanczyk
Sometimes, I have to get ready to go, fast. This summer, my routine went something like this: maxi dress. A pair of earrings from Door County. Hair twisted and pinned into a messy bun. A layer of lipstick and pretty gloss, my simple black sandals, and I’m set. 20 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | september 2014
Recommended: Shea’s Sangria
1 bottle tempranillo (try Campo Viejo brand) ¼ c. brandy ¼ c. Triple Sec 1 c. orange juice 1 c. simple syrup 1 c. blueberries 1 peach, diced
But what about the inside? What about the times I need to chill out, or focus, or let go of negativity? What do I reach for then?
Combine ingredients and let sit overnight. Serve over ice.
For you, the answer may be prayer or calling a close friend or enjoying a glass of red sangria over ice with soaked peaches and blueberries (just an idea). Thankfully, two local experts have us covered. Try these must-have mantras and practices from Allie Pedretti of Pedretti Power Yoga LLC, De Pere, and Melissa K. Cuny of Boundless Yoga Studio, Howard.
Morning practice.
Cuny notes that when she’s practicing what she preaches, she gets up in the morning and meditates, or picks a mantra for the day, usually one word like patience, kindness, breathe, and so on. Deepen the practice. No worries! “I think many people believe that there has to be so much more to mantras or meditation, and that can be intimidating,” Cuny says. “Really, it’s just a matter of practicing, and figuring out what works for you. You will notice a shift.”

Once breath is slow and steady, Pedretti recommends you start positive affirmations/mantras, which distract your mind from negative feelings and provide you with something happy to focus on. Yes, there are days when it’s hard to focus, and days when my problems feel overwhelming, but the takeaway for me has been awareness. When I meditate, I’m aware of all the things holding me back. This presents a choice—will I give my problems the power to ruin my day, or focus on something else? Something better? metallic magic Tips for mastering one of fall’s hottest makeup trends By Meghan Diemel
Metallic makeup hues are the next big trend for autumn. When applied correctly, they heighten the drama of a nighttime look or add a touch of glam for daytime hours. There are some helpful hints to follow, however, before embracing the trend that can be tricky to master. The first place to start is to ensure the depth of color of the metallic – whether it’s for your eyes, lips or cheeks – complements your skin tone. “I would say the lighter your skin tone, the lighter the metallic should be,” says Lane Morein, spa specialist at Savoye Hair Studio in Green Bay. “As your skin tone gets darker, the darker the tone of the metallic can be.” Once you find a shade that works for your skin tone, make sure your skin is prepped properly, says Rhonda Sitnikau, a freelance hair and makeup artist who rents space at Salon Fifty Four in Green Bay. 24 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | september 2014
try to keep the metallic makeup to one area of the face,” she explains. “If you’re not good with a makeup brush, you can try using your finger.”
“It’s a significant thing to have your skin prepped correctly, because if you do not, it can be a nightmare,” she explains. “If you use moisturizer, and sunscreen, which hopefully people do, then you have to make sure it’s completely dry [before applying makeup]. Otherwise, the pigment will grab and it just won’t give you the same appearance as if you had a clean, fresh palette. “The best results with using metallics is to have some sort of primer base,” she adds. “If I use [metallic makeup] on the eyes, I always use an eye primer. If your skin is not as smooth as you’d like it to be, primer is great because it gives you a nice clean canvas. Primer is key.” Sitnikau says that placing a thin strip of baby powder below the eye when applying metallic eye makeup can help catch any metallic powder that falls off during application. Metallic eye makeup also works great as a layer over the top of liquid eyeliner, because it blends any potential uneven lines. Another important hint for metallic makeup application is to choose one feature to highlight and keep the application light at first, says Morein. “Less is more – and you want to
HISTORIC BROADWAY DISTRICT
“You never want to do the eyes, lips and cheeks together in the daytime,” furthers Sitnikau. “You’ll look ghoulish or greasy. The light doesn’t complement that kind of makeup during the day and you’re not going to get the result you’re looking for. Typically you take one feature and focus on that for the day; then at night you can have more of a dramatic eye and then a little bit on the cheek.”
Start the season off right! When applied correctly, there isn’t an age limit to fall’s hottest trend, says Morein. “As you get older, less is more,” she advises. “But you can pull pretty much anything off if you have the confidence to do so. So while there’s no age that you should stop wearing metallic makeup, I do think less is more when it comes to application.”

Pilates for a Cause
The Ultimate Closet Relocates

Paula Coates, owner of b Centered Training Pilates Studio, is offering a new way to support local cancer charities while getting fit at the same time. During the month of October, Coates will be hosting at least eight donation-based pilates classes for students of all levels. Donations gathered during classes on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m. will fund local cancer charities such as Ribbon of Hope. “I really wanted local charities specifically because we need to keep it in the community,” says Coates, who has been teaching pilates for more than 13 years. “If I can give back, it all keeps working in that circle.” Coates was inspired to offer donation-based classes after nationally-acclaimed pilates guru Julian Littleford passed away from testicular cancer last August. Last fall she raised money for the Julian Littleford Family Fund but for the second installment of Pilates for a Cause, Coates is focusing on the Green Bay community and the cancer survivors she works with at her studio in Howard.
One of Green Bay’s hottest boutiques started 2014 off with a bang. The Ultimate Closet relocated to its new space at 801 Hoffman Road in Allouez on January 2. The boutique had previously been located at 2069 Central Court. “It’s a totally different area where you get a lot of walkers and bikers riding by,” says owner Patti Schisel. “I like the small community sense of the whole thing – a boutique in your neighborhood.” Besides the added convenience and community feel, Schisel also notes the new space is brighter and more open than her last location. This has allowed her to introduce five new clothing lines to better accommodate her growing customer base. “Women are looking for easy, comfortable, funky clothes,” Schisel says. “Clothes you can throw on and look like a million bucks without thinking about it.” Schisel also has plans to bring back her popular fashion seminars with topics ranging from how to layer pieces to how to best dress for your age.
“It wasn’t something I intentionally got into, but obviously I’m meant to work with this cause. I don’t know where it will lead me,” Coates says, “but I think it will bring me where I need to go.”
“It’s all about looking great, but being comfortable,” she says. “I try hard to find clothing in great fabrics that is easy to take care of, looks good and can be worn for different occasions so you get more bang for buck.”
In addition to the donation-based classes, 10 percent of all class package sales during the month of October will benefit local cancer charities.
The Ultimate Closet is open Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturday, 10am-4pm. Visit them at ultimatecloset.net or on Facebook for more information and updates.
