Prevent Osteoporosis What is osteoporosis? The word “osteoporosis” means porous bone. A porous bone is one that is less dense and, therefore, more fragile and more susceptible to fracture. About 44 million Americans suffer from osteoporosis, making it a major public health concern. One out of every two women and one out of every four men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture of the hip, vertebrae or wrist in their lifetime. What are the risk factors? There are some risk factors associated with the development of osteoporosis that you can do nothing about. • Gender: women tend to lose bone mass faster than men. • Age: The older you get, the more prone you are to bone loss. • Body: People who are small-framed and thin-boned have a greater tendency to develop osteoporosis.

White or Asian women are in the highest risk categories; Hispanics and blacks are at a significantly lower risk. And if osteoporosis runs in your family, especially if your mother had it, then you are at risk as well. There are risk factors you can change with the help of your doctor such as: abnormalities of the menstrual cycle, low estrogen levels, or premature menopause—that put you at higher risk for osteoporosis. The same is true for men who have low levels of testosterone before their 40s or in conjunction with obesity. People with eating disorders can have metabolic reasons for developing osteoporosis. A lifetime diet low in vitamin D and calcium also puts you at risk. Taking medications such as steroids, anticonvulsants or anticoagulation therapy for a long period of time can affect bone density. Cigarette smoking, drinking too much alcohol and leading a sedentary life also put you at risk.

Symptoms and diagnosis The symptoms of osteoporosis are silent; those with osteoporosis feel no pain. But some individuals, before they have any fractures, exhibit a loss in stature. If they have bone loss of their spine, you may see some bending of their back. This can create loss of height, spinal deformities and maybe even some back pain. A doctor diagnoses osteoporosis by doing a bone mineral density test. This is like an X-ray and detects low bone density before a fracture occurs. It can predict chances of fracturing in the future by telling you how weak or strong the bone is. And it helps determine the rate of loss or monitors the effectiveness of treatment. How is it treated? The treatment of osteoporosis involves good nutrition, a variety of vitamin and mineral supplements and exercise. Specific medications can also play an important role in treating osteoporosis and preventing fractures. If you have risk factors for osteoporosis, if you have ever sustained a bone fracture following a minimal trauma, if you have a family history of osteoporosis, if you are 65 and older, or if you simply have questions about your bone health, please talk to your health care provider. You can also receive comprehensive state-of-the-art bone care at Lakeshore Orthopaedics in Manitowoc.

How can I prevent it? To help prevent osteoporosis, you must incorporate calcium into your diet. There are many sources of calcium, including milk products, leafy greens, broccoli, collard greens, spinach, sardines and other types of fish. Most vitamin D is made through the skin from exposure to light, but as people get older vitamin D production decreases significantly; so people in their 60s and 70s should take vitamin D supplements. It is recommended to take 1200-1500 mg of calcium and 1000 IU of vitamin D daily. Also do weight-bearing exercises that strengthen your legs and your hips, to maintain a healthy vascular flow to the bones.

how to

Choose a Pet Groomer If you like to hug your dog or cat – and who doesn’t – you know that snuggle time is more enjoyable when your pet is clean and groomed.

come in contact with other animals? What will happen if the groomer gets called away for an emergency?

Grooming is one of the responsibilities of owning a pet. All pets need baths and nail trims to stay happy and healthy. Certain breeds need regular haircuts and special treatments to stay looking spectacular!

3: Variety of Grooming Services Some groomers prefer to work on certain breeds. Ask if the groomer has any restrictions or will accept dogs of any size and breed. Also ask if they groom cats or other small companion animals.

A skilled groomer, also called a pet stylist, can bring out the best in your pet. Groomers work in pet salons, pet stores, and veterinary offices. Some work out of their homes. To find a groomer, you might search in the newspaper, yellow pages, or online. You can also ask your friends to recommend a groomer. Before making a grooming appointment, visit the groomer’s place of business so you can meet them and see first-hand how they operate. This is the best way to determine if a groomer will be a good match for you and your pet. Here are five things to consider when choosing a groomer. 1: Caring and Competent Staff Your primary concern should be how the grooming staff will handle and treat your dog or cat while in the salon – particularly if your pet is sensitive, shy, or has special needs. Observe how employees interact with the animals under their care. Kindness and patience goes a long way to help reduce any stress your pet might feel. Trust your instincts. You should feel comfortable asking about grooming services and explaining exactly how you want your pet to look so that there are no surprises. 2: Clean and Safe Environment Look around the facility or ask for a tour. The grooming area should look and smell clean. Pay attention to where the dogs and cats are kept while waiting for your return. Be sure your pet will be in a safe, secure environment. Ask questions. Will your pet be caged, and if so, for how long? Will your pet

The simplest grooming typically includes brushing, shampoo, blow-dry, and nail trimming. A full service groom might also include trimming the fur on paws, legs, or ears. Certain breeds require hand stripping or clipping over their entire body. Be sure you understand what is included in any grooming package you select. Some businesses offer additional services like brushing, de-matting, flea treatments, and anal gland expression. A few offer a premium pet pampering services such as nail polishing, ear and teeth cleaning, facials, and therapeutic massage. 4: Convenience Look for a business located in an area that is convenient for you. Check the hours of operation. It should be easy for you to schedule an appointment, and there should be parking available when you drop off and pick up your pet. 5: Cost Grooming options range from self-serve pet washes around $10-15 dollars to full service professional grooming that can cost $45-$75 and up depending on the size, breed and work involved in the service. If you’re not sure what services your pet needs, talk to the groomer or staff. They can explain what is best for your pet and maintenance services that can help keep grooming cost down.

Having great-looking skin has a start, a finish, and any number of elements in between, depending on your personal situation and what you want to accomplish. Following are a few key areas to focus on and how to achieve the results you want.

Make sure the skin is flawless before going for a fresh look. Use concealer and a facial highlighting pen. Then highlight the cheekbone and brow bone to make the face seem more multidimensional and avoid a completely matte look.

OVERALL No matter what your approach, you’ll want to take into consideration these five steps to healthier, cleaner, younger skin:

Spring Skin-Savers – When you step out in style, don’t forget to keep skin beautifully protected with SPF protection.

Cleanse Exfoliate Freshen Moisturize Protect It takes more than one product to achieve beautiful skin. As part of a daily skin care regimen, these five steps work in harmony to synergize the effects to produce a vibrant, healthy skin. FOUNDATION Dot a little foundation on your forehead and along your cheekbones and blend in an upward and outward motion. Finish by softly blending downward to put any fine hairs back in place. Less is more. You can always build additional coverage with a second layer if needed. Apply with a light touch to avoid rubbing any concealer you’ve applied.

LIPS Fresh pink lips are the perfect complement to a simple spring look. Pair with Lip Liner – If you prefer defined lips or want to prevent lip color from straying outside your lip line, try clear lip liner. EYELASHES Thicker, longer eyelashes are always the goal. They open the eyes and have really become a trend. It is important to have mascara on upper and lower lashes. With such bright shades, you can avoid looking washed out with more mascara. CHEEKS Try a C-shaped cheek. Straight from the catwalk, rethink your usual application by sweeping your cheek color from the apple of the cheek, along cheekbone and finishing at the temple to create a C-shape. This trick makes the face appear fresher and more youthful. To avoid over applying to temple area, just apply what is left on the brush after the cheek application to the temples. how to Choose an Assisted Living Facility

When the raking becomes too much, the shopping a chore and the upkeep of a home begins to overwhelm you, it may be time to begin thinking about moving to an assisted living residence. And, when your children begin to worry about you being alone or you would just feel better about having someone around, it’s time to begin looking in earnest. The first step is to begin talking to your friends. Either they have found an assisted living facility or know others who have and can give you pointers based on personal experience. If you know someone who lives in an assisted living setting, ask if you may visit them. Then, make a list of places that look most interesting and make some appointments. Don’t be afraid to ask if you may stay for dinner when you visit. Since meals are usually included in the price of assisted living, it’s nice to know about the food, service and setting. This will also give you an opportunity to visit with other residents. It is a wise practice to bring someone along on a visit. This way you’ll not only have a second opinion, you’ll have someone to bounce ideas off and to give you feed back. On your visit, ask the person you meet with about costs and what services that are available. For example, are meals, cleaning and laundry service included? Brochures along with a price sheet are good take-aways so that you can review your visit. How much room do you need? Some folks think a studio apartment is just right while others need a one or two bedroom apartment. These apartments have a living room, kitchen and dinette area. Just remember,

you’re looking for a new home, your assisted living residence should feel that way. Since most residences allow you to furnish your own apartment it won’t take long to feel at home. Yes, most residences also have a spot for your car. Other on-site services may include a resident nurse, a clinic, beauty shop, gift shop, and family kitchen so that when your family visits, there is a dining area for you to fix a family meal. Gardens and picnic areas are a benefit and, if you love gardening, often they’ll welcome your puttering. Thanksgiving at Grandma’s doesn’t have to be a thing of the past. Another consideration is the amount of socializing you want to do. One of the great advantages of assisted living residences is that there are other people around so it becomes a neighborhood. You can socialize as much as you want. Most facilities also offer organized activities and you’ll wamt to know what those are. In considering a facility, also consider what kind of care you may require down the road. If the facility has a skilled nursing unit or a rehabilitation unit, it would mean that should you need more care, you wouldn’t have to find a new place, you’d just move to a new neighborhood there which is much easier because you wouldn’t have to make new friends. In some cases, couples need different levels of care but don’t want to be separated and a facility with both assisted living and skilled care meets everyone’s needs. Think of it as shopping for a new home with more freedom and less work. It is almost like resort living.

Builder Member of the Year

There are many key factors in choosing the right builder. Start by asking friends and neighbors for recommendations. When it comes to construction, wordof-mouth is a great way to find out information. When asking someone about the experience they had with a building project it is important to be specific. Things to ask about include if they started on time, had any delays (other than weather), kept costs within budget and finished when they were supposed to finish. It is also important to ask if the crews were professional and cleaned up once the project was completed. Ask if repairs had to be made after the project was done. Some minor issues are expected, but if there are repairs or minor touch-ups that had to be done, ask if they were handled quickly. You want to make sure they have good follow-up service. This is a question you want to ask to past customers, who are likely to be more honest about it. It’s a good idea to drive by homes the builder has worked on in the past. You might want to do so on the weekend, that way you can talk to the home owners and ask questions. Take a notebook with you with questions you want to ask and write down their answers. It will be easier to review your notes later and make a final decision. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions. Even questions that seem insignificant can yield important answers. Ask the builder you are considering for references. When you contact the

references ask the same questions. It is also a good idea contact your local Better Business Bureau and Home Builder’s Association. Once you have compiled a list of three of four possible builders, set up meetings with them. It is recommended to meet at the site of the building to give them an idea of what is required and to bring blueprints. Ask each builder to bring photos of work they have done. Prepare a list of questions. Ask how much of the work is done by their own crews and how much, if any, is subcontracted. Most builders will frame a house. Anything beyond that point is usually performed by other companies. Ask ahead of time how far they will go with the project and who twill do the excavating, siding, roofing, insulation, cooling and heating, etc. Some builders will subcontract out the work for the entire project, which means dealing with many other companies. If they do this, ask which companies they work with. Ask about the quality of materials used and for an estimate of the total cost involved. Ask if the builder will oversee the work on a daily basis or if they have a project manager who will do this. This applies even if the work is subcontracted. You want to make sure that any possible problem is noticed and addressed quickly. If a problem is left undetected until the project is complete it could be very costly to correct it. It is generally much easier to catch a problem early on and correct it while the initial building process is still going on. Make sure the builder is open to questions and is good with communication. While choosing the right builder may take some time, in the end the efforts of being selective will result in satisfaction with the finished project.

how to Select the Right Insurance Agent for Your Needs

It is not uncommon to find shopping for the right insurance agent to be something a challenge. Finding a company that offers the right combination of service, coverage and price isn’t easy to do. The problem may simply be one of not knowing how to identify reputable, experienced agents. It is vital to keep in mind the fact that everyone needs to have the right type of insurance coverage in place, and that a seasoned agent can help make that happen for his or her clients. Prior to choosing your insurance coverage, it is necessary to identify a skilled agent willing to guide you through the process. You should always conduct thorough research into multiple agents in order to find the best one for your needs. A great way to start is to seek referrals from friends, family members and colleagues you know you can trust. If you receive a recommendation, there is a strong likelihood that you will have the same type of positive experience as the person providing the referral. Talented agents know that offering great service is the best way to keep receiving personal recommendations and increased business. If you are satisfied with your agent’s work, they would surely appreciate your willingness to refer friends and relatives in the future.

Those who have not had the benefit of a personal recommendation are free to conduct their own research. It may be wise to begin by making inquiries of individual companies and brokers. Selecting a large insurer offers greater uniformity among agents, as they will have undergone the same types of training and be subject to the same policies. However, they may also lack creativity and innovation in the way they handle their accounts. Thorough deliberation is critical when shopping for the best agent. Treat the research process as your would if you were purchasing a new car or home. Make sure that you pick a company that is highly regarded by consumers. You should also verify that any prospective

agent possesses all necessary licenses and training. Once you have narrowed your list of possible agents, it is a good idea to meet with each one. Have a list of questions and concerns ready so that you can gather all of the information you need. Be certain that you feel comfortable with their answers before you take the process any further. If you feel as if an agent is trying to get you to purchase a policy that does not meet your needs, you should proceed cautiously. Simply inform the agent that you need more information and are not ready to make a decision immediately. If you are working with the right kind of agent, they will allow you to take as much time as you need to collect all of the research and detail necessary to make your decision. They will also treat you like a good teacher — giving you lots of useful information — rather than a high-pressure salesperson. Also make sure that your agent is willing to have an ongoing relationship with you. If the relationship ends once the sale is made, you will be at a clear disadvantage. If your dialogue is a continuing one, you will be able to contact your agent if you have any questions or concerns. This could even include seeking help with a claim filing should the need ever arise. Take caution to choose an agent that is reputable and established. If your agent has been in the business for many years, chances are they will better understand the policies that they sell and be able to take extra care to ensure that you are properly protected. It is important to secure the appropriate type and amount of insurance in order to properly protect yourself and your financial future. Thorough research needs to be done to make certain that you have purchased insurance coverage tailored to your specific circumstances. You, your family and your finances will reap the benefits of the extra effort. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent is an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future.

Calumet Avenue how to Choose a Chiropractor Chiropractic

According to the American Chiropractic Association, accredited chiropractors go through classroom, laboratory and clinical training that totals at least 4,200 hours. Chiropractic care can be a great choice for people who want convenient, cost-effective treatment for their health care needs. In fact, it’s an increasingly popular choice for millions of Americans with back, head or neck pain, headaches, injuries and other ailments. And because chiropractors are expertly trained to work on muscles, joints, bones and ligaments — the things that keep your entire body connected — chiropractic care can improve your general health as well. That’s why it’s important to choose a chiropractor for your health care. Whether you’re experiencing pain or just want to improve your overall well-being, many people get good results from visiting a local chiropractor.

why chiropractic? The reasons people choose chiropractic care boil down to four things: quality, cost, convenience and outcomes. Quality can be assured by the rigorous training that chiropractors go through before they can be accredited. They’re trained on the human body’s nerves and musculoskeletal system, and chiropractors’ educational requirements are among the most stringent in the health care industry. They typically spend four years in a premedical program and four to five years of professional training. Cost and convenience are two other reasons chiropractic care is so popular. Compared to the skyrocketing cost of other types of medical care, chiropractic can seem downright affordable for the results it provides. And with the waiting times at doctors’ offices and emergency rooms becoming ridiculous, chiropractors can typically offer treatments that fit into your busy lifestyle. Finally, the positive health outcomes people get from chiropractic care matter more than anything else. People love the care they get from their chiropractor — and are happy to tell you about it — but the best way to see

the outcome is to try it for yourself. The most ringing endorsement of chiropractic care is seeing that it works for you. insurance coverage When selecting a chiropractor, it’s important to know what your insurance company will cover. Most insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage, including Medicare and some Medicaid plans, but you should check to see exactly what your health plan includes. You should also see if there are any discounts for choosing an “in-network” chiropractor, which could let you have a lower co-pay and more affordable coverage. Even if you don’t have health insurance, you may find chiropractic care is a costeffective alternative that gets good results. Most chiropractors will offer an affordable payment plan or low cash rates to help patients without insurance coverage. get referrals One way to choose a chiropractor in your area is to ask friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers who they use. You may be surprised at how many people you know who have gotten good treatment from chiropractors and are happy to share their experiences about it. They should be able to answer your questions about the things you can only learn from first-hand knowledge — things like the chiropractor’s demeanor, how easy it is to schedule an office visit, and any other concerns you might have about the chiropractic process. You can also use the American Chiropractic Association’s online “Find a Doctor” tool at acatoday.com/DocSearch. By taking your time to find a good chiropractor in your area, you’ll get the affordable, convenient and effective health benefits that come from chiropractic care.

how to Buy a Diamond

The sparkle, the shine - it just can’t be replaced by any other stone.

Manitowoc’s Busiest Jewelry Store

Proudly serving the community for 86 years.

Buying a diamond can be stressful if you haven’t done your research. Your local jeweler can show you and teach you what you need to know when shopping for a diamond. How much should you spend? DeBeers is known for saying that a man should spend two month’s salary on an engagement ring for his fiancée. Choose a comfortable amount that you know you can afford. In the diamond world, the four Cs are known as cut, color, clarity and carat weight. CUT Cut truly is the craftsmanship applied when cutting the facets of the stone. A well cut diamond sparkles beautifully. Cut can also refer to the shape of the diamond. Several popular shapes are listed below. • Round: The classic, traditional cut. The majority of diamonds sold are round. • Princess: Brilliant-style shape with sharp, uncut corners. Typically cut square, generally has 76 facets and has as much brilliance and fire as the round diamond.

A typical teardrop-shaped diamond will contain 58 facets. • Radiant: a straight-edged rectangular or square stone with cut corners, 62-70 facets. • Marquise: A football-shaped diamond. • Oval: A very romantic cut.

COLOR The color of a diamond has the second biggest impact on its price, after carat weight. Diamonds are graded on a scale of colors ranging from colorless to light yellow. The scale ranges from D-Z, with “D” considered colorless. Colorless diamonds are typically the most valuable. Colored diamonds in natural fancy colors like pink are becoming more popular thanks to Jennifer Lopez and command the higher prices, most are sold to collectors. CARAT Size doesn’t matter, but a quality 1 carat diamond can be just as impressive as a 2 carat diamond if the clarity of the stone is better. However the size of a diamond does have the biggest impact on its price. The metric carat, which equals 0.20 gram, is the standard unit of

weight for diamonds. A 0.5 carat is about 5.2 mm in diameter-width and 1 carat is about 6.5 mm in diameter width. CLARITY Most diamonds have imperfections. Clarity refers to how clean or clear the diamond is . The clarity scale ranges from FL-13, flawless to imperfect. GIA Diamond clarity scale • FL-Flawless: No imperfections inside or outside the stone under the loupe magnification of 10 power. • IF-Internally Flawless: No inclusions under a loupe of 10 power magnification. • VVS1, VVS2-Very Very Slightly Imperfect: Small inclusions which are very difficult to see under a loupe of 10 power magnification. • VS1, VS2-Very Slightly Imperfect: Small inclusion which are slightly difficult to see under a loupe with a 10 power magnification. • S11, S12-Slightly Imperfect: Inclusions which are fairly easy to see under a loupe with a 10 power magnification, or visible to the naked eye. • 11, 12, 13 - Imperfect: Inclusions that range from eye visible to very easily seen to the naked eye. Before purchasing the perfect stone, ask about guarantees and maintenance. Your jeweler should offer a guarantee or a warranty on your diamond. They should also explain the maintenance of the stone to you. Diamonds worn every day should be checked by the jeweler at least twice a year. Another important aspect to consider is insurance. Often the jeweler has insurance policies available. Many homeowners polices also cover diamonds. Insurance for your jewels should not be overlooked; your investment should be protected. According to local diamond buyers there are several things to be careful of when buying a diamond. Watch out for diamonds that have been enhanced, whether with color or clarity. Also beware of fake diamonds like CZs or Moissanite. Find a jeweler that you trust and that will provide you with a high quality diamond that meets your expectations. The Gemological Institute of America is an independent grading laboratory for the diamond industry. Search their Web site at www.gia.org for more information.

Cremation is becoming a popular part of the American funeral. While so many people are seeking more options for meaningful funeral services, they’ve realized what cremation can offer, especially within the context of a ceremony. Cremation serves as a dignified and powerful method of commemorating a life worth celebrating, an important first step in the healing process. What You Should Know About Cremation Memorialization Options and Cremation Families are realizing there are many options and much flexibility surrounding planning for cremation. Some families choose to have a viewing or a funeral service before the cremation. Others choose a memorial service at the time of cremation or afterwards with the urn present, or even a committal service at the final disposition of cremated remains. Often, funeral or memorial services can be held in a place of worship, a funeral home, a crematory chapel or even at a place of special significance to your loved one. Likewise, cremated remains can be interred in a cemetery plot or in a cremation niche in a columbarium. They can also be retained by a family member or scattered at a meaningful location that can be appreciated by future generations. (It is always advisable

to check for local regulations regarding scattering in a public place.) Cremation is just one step in the commemorative process – an important step in preparing the remains for memorialization. How you can continue with the memorialization process is limited only by your imagination. Other Cremation Issues Cost of Cremation Services The cost of cremation varies depending on the services and products selected by the family. Funeral homes should provide in itemized list including the costs of these services and products they offer. Making funeral plans in advance is helpful because, in addition to easing the planning process and allowing family members to know you wishes, planning ahead gives you a sense of the actual costs associated with a specific type of service. Another Form of Remembrance Cremation does not – and should not – take the place of a funeral service. Like burial, it is merely another form of disposition. However, by considering all your funeral options, you’ll find the cremation can be an important part of the commemoration process. It helps loved one to share grief, celebrate the life of the person who died and find healing in remembrance.

It Sure Makes Life Easier

We’ll Make Sure They Fit Great

Shoes come in thousands of shapes, sizes, colors, and styles. So not only do shoes protect our feet, they also give us a means to show off our personal style and personality. Here are some tips from the National Shoe Retailers Association and the Pedorthic Footwear Association. Shoe sizes are not standard. They can vary greatly between shoe brands and styles. A size 8M from one manufacturer might fit like a size 8 ½ N from another. Start with the size you most frequently wear, but then try on several pairs of different sizes to see what feels most comfortable. It helps to bring along socks of a weight that you will usually be wearing with the shoes. Dress socks will produce a different fit than athletic socks. One size isn’t necessarily two. Have both feet measured every time you purchase a pair of shoes because, over the course of your lifetime, your feet will change in both size and shape. For many people, one foot is slightly longer and/or wider than the other, so fit the larger foot first. Look for shoes that match the shape of your foot. If your foot shape matches your shoe shape, you’re on the right track to good shoe fit. Many shoes, especially women’s, can be very pointed toward the tip, which works for some but not for others.

WI-5001645188

Try on various types and styles. Judge shoes by how they fit your feet. Don’t select any style that feels too tight, too loose, or irritates parts of your foot. If shoes feel too snug or too loose at the try-on stage, your feet may hurt later on.

Shoes should be as wide as your feet, and longer. When shoes contact the ground during walking or running, feet elongate. Allow adequate space (3/8” to 1/2”) at the end of the shoe

for your longest toe. Make sure the widest part of your foot (the “ball”) fits comfortably into the widest part of the shoe. This permits shoes to bend where your feet flex, giving you a more functional and more comfortable wearing experience. Heels should fit comfortably in the shoes. Don’t buy shoes too small just to avoid heel slippage. If your foot has excessive slippage in the heel of your shoe, try a different shoe, or ask your shoe fitter to make some minor adjustments. An improperly fitting heel can cause blisters. Inserts or orthotics affect the way a shoe fits. These take up shoe space intended for your feet. If you require inserts or orthotics, you’ll need a roomier shoe; otherwise, the inserts can’t function properly and your shoes won’t fit right. Choose shoes appropriate for the activity AND the time you perform that activity. Feet change shape and size during the day AND under different conditions: after exercise, in warm weather, sweating, with weight gain, or from sitting to standing. When shoe shopping, remember that your feet are generally larger after an activity than preceding it, so buy accordingly. Walk in the shoe to make sure it feels comfortable. No need to do a marathon run while trying on shoes, but at least take a walk around the store. Shoes express your fashion sense and affect your health, not just your feet, but your entire spine and posture. They also must fit your various activities. So choose wisely.

Bottled Water Company Sometimes it can be hard to tell whether your tap water is as clean and purified as you think it is. The tap water that runs from your faucets and sinks can contain several components such as chlorine, fluoride, calcium deposits and other added minerals. It may be necessary to consider a different route when it comes to drinking water. Those other components of tap water can cause the water to taste different from purified water you would buy in a convenience store. Having too large an amount of calcium deposits in tap water can be characterized as “hard” water, which can be thought of as unclean. However, simply hiring a water treatment company can take care of that problem. These companies use advanced technology to filter tap water to get rid of all of its dangerous contaminants so it can do absolutely no harm to a person’s body. Drinking this purified water can provide you with a clean, purified drink without the taste of chlorine or fluoride that tap water seems to gives you.

$

Most of these water treatment companies will make the job even easier for you by delivering the purified water bottles straight to your home or office so don’t have to continually go to the store to buy more.

Water Filtration System

You will also ultimately want to look at how much you are willing to spend for bottled or treated water. Some companies can be very expensive, and others might not provide the highest quality of water available. You will want to do research on the different brands so you can compare the different pricing, quality, purity, benefits and healthiness to better insure you will be purchasing exactly what you want.

how to Choose a Water Treatment and

Since you’re probably using your purified water for several things such as

drinking and cooking, it’s also better to decide whether you use a treated water company or bottled water based on how much water you need in everyday use. Water treatment companies can provide you with water in gallons at a time, which can be much more convenient than having to buy 16- or 20-ounce bottles at your local grocery stores. Sometimes it is easy to confuse purified bottled water from natural spring water. Spring water comes from underground and has a natural purifier from flowing down rocks and streams, which gives it the healthy minerals that are actually good for your body. Purified drinking water is taken through several filter processes that make it distilled and deionized to give it a pure, clean taste. This also creates another decision when it comes to drinking bottled water because the minerals in natural springs can give you special vitamins and minerals such as bicarbonate, which helps with your digestive system, magnesium, which is vital to the structure and function of your body, and sodium, which helps regulate water in your body. It might be hard to find the right water treatment company depending on where you live and what you want. However, you should always inspect how different companies filter water so that you can get exactly what you want when you drink the water and so you can know that what you are drinking is healthy and right for you and those living in your household. Purified water is definitely something you would want to consider if you dislike the quality and taste of your tap water. Even though it might save you money, purified water is a better solution when it comes to the health of your body.

In the past, picking a dentist posed little difficulty whatsoever. Routine cleanings, x-rays and the handling of more complex dental procedures were all the duties of the local dentist or the dental office that was designated by the patient’s insurance company. These days, patients tend to conduct independent research in order to find a dentist in which they have complete confidence, and one they believe is best able to improve their dental health in a convenient, comfortable environment. The process of selecting a dentist should include consideration of several factors. Physical location and hours of operation are key. It makes sense to seek a dentist whose office is near your home or workplace and operates at times convenient to your family. Getting recommendations from loved ones and colleagues can be a great way to identify the best dentists. Dental offices often have their own websites which include lots of useful facts about the practice itself and the educational and professional backgrounds of those working there. A few things to research on a dental office’s website include the rates to be charged for various types of procedures, how appointments are handled and what kinds of specialized services are offered. You should also try to learn how much lead time is usually needed in order to make appointments for teeth cleanings and other routine procedures. It is important to find a dental office able to provide emergency services when unexpected issues arise. You can learn whether a given office offers such services by simply placing a call during business hours. Try to find a practice staffed by knowledgeable, personable employees. Some basic information should be verified in regards to any prospective dentist prior to an initial visit. Check that they have earned the necessary degree from a reputable school and are current on all licensing and continuing

educational requirements. Ideally, they will be familiar with the latest dental technologies and trends. Always make certain that a prospective practice accepts your dental insurance. The best dentists are known for providing stateof-the-art dental care while striving to create and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for their patients. Payment policies should be discussed in advance of any procedure, with estimates being given for any and all services. If dental insurance will be used, always check to be sure your chosen dentist accepts your coverage type. If they do not, you may need to find an alternate dentist. Discuss payment plan options ahead of time, especially for the most expensive procedures. When visiting a dentist for the first time, he or she should be professional and friendly. Every dentist should be willing to answer any and all questions pertaining to the individual patient’s needs and concerns. If phobias and pain are concerns, patients should make that fact known during an initial visit with a prospective dentist and determine what can be done to alleviate them. Many dentists are willing to go above and beyond to cater to patients with these specific issues. A basic oral health history should be taken by the dentist, and possible future treatment and prevention options should be discussed. A good dentist will work to make his or her patients comfortable and should have a pleasant chair-side manner. First impressions mean a lot when choosing a dentist. If the dentist, hygienists or office staff create an atmosphere that is anything less than professional or competent, a new dentist should be sought. The best dentists offer friendly, happy dental experiences. They place a high priority on the preferences and concerns of their patients and offer exceptional, cutting-edge dental services. Teeth are extremely important to overall health and appearance and should be entrusted only to the very best dentists. Finding a good dentist truly is akin to finding a true friend within the dental industry who consistently makes it their goal to improve the beauty and health of their patients’ smiles.

Before making a choice, perform a background check on the financial advisors on your list and review their credentials. Your financial advisor must have the necessary training from an accredited institution and the prescribed certification for your state in order to be a true financial advisor. Ask yourself the following questions: • How many years of experience does the financial advisor have? • Have any complaints been filed against the financial advisor? • What awards, if any, has the financial advisor received? • Can the financial advisor provide concrete proof of a satisfied clientele? Answers to these questions are key when searching for a financial advisor who will meet your specific needs. AREAS OF EXPERTISE There’s a complete buffet of financial products that can contribute to your financial well-being. Everything from bonds to mutual funds and commodities to stocks are common investing tools. However, depending upon your appetite for risk, some investment vehicles are better for your portfolio than others. You want to find a financial advisor who’s an expert in customizing a financial plan for your benefit, not for your detriment. Consider the specific segment of the market in which you want to invest your money. Look for a financial advisor specializing in that particular investment type. For example, you might want to invest in the commodities market. If your

potential financial advisor has little experience in the commodities market, consider a different choice on your candidate list. RATE OF SUCCESS Take a look at the rate of success each potential candidate has. Has the rate of return of his recommendations outpaced the average market rate of return over the last year, five years, or ten years? One indicator of a solid rate of return is how well a financial advisor conducts research to strengthen his clients’ portfolios. Here’s where experience plays an important role. This is especially important in tough economic times. How well has your financial advisor-candidate weathered past economic recessions for his clients? Do his clients continue to thrive in a bleak financial environment? On the other hand, have his clients experienced multiple hits to their portfolios? That’s why an advisor’s success is well worth your consideration. FEES OR COMMISSIONS? Ask your financial advisor about her compensation. Is she fee-based or commissionbased? That will make a difference in your final selection. After all it’s your money you’re investing, not your financial advisor’s money. A commission-based advisor is more apt to suggest financial products that favor her compensation. Such a situation could needlessly increase your exposure to market risk. Only go with a commission-based advisor if she has a proven track record of success and has your best interest in mind. If you feel the need to guarantee that your best interest will be served, go with a fee-based advisor. A fee-based advisor is compensated only for the time spent on servicing your portfolio. INTERVIEW Finally, make arrangements to meet the top candidates on your financial advisor list. Get a feel for how the financial advisor will treat you as his or her client. Will he act condescending toward you and your ideas? Will she have the heart of a teacher when addressing your concerns? A good way to do that is to ask direct questions regarding experience, services and financial products offered, and the fee schedule. How your financial advisor-candidate answers your questions will give you a solid idea of which one is right for you.

Affordable Alternative to Avoid Probate

Prepare Your Estate Plan It is a common misconception that only wealthy people need to worry about estate planning. However, this is most definitely not the case. Regardless of your circumstances, whether you are rich or poor, old or young, you really should create a plan for the handling of your property and other assets in the event you die unexpectedly. Not having a sound estate plan can result in legal difficulties, great inconvenience, unnecessary taxation and family strife. Taking the time to consult with estate planning professionals can have a significant impact on your lasting legacy. The best estate plans are those crafted with the assistance of an experienced lawyer who can create documents written with your specific circumstances in mind. Candid information about personalities, the size of your estate, and your goals are vital to a sound estate plan. DOES YOUR ESTATE REQUIRE COURT SUPERVISION? A Will subjects your estate to the probate process. Probate is the court-supervised process of transferring assets from a deceased person. Reasons for court supervision may be ill feelings among those who are left behind, assets that are difficult to value, or taxes or creditors that need to be paid, just to name a few. When you think about whether your estate requires court supervision, you must also think about the future. If your children get along now, are you sure that will always be the case? In cases where it is needed, the protection of the Probate Court is valuable. But in many instances, such as that of a close family, or of a surviving spouse who is the sole heir, often unnecessary and burdensome.

Estate Planning | Trusts and estates Elder law issues | Tax planning

There are alternatives to probate, which when used in the right circumstances can be faster, cheaper, and more user-friendly. Among them are:

Transfers on Death or Payable on Death designations allow designation of a successor on the title of real estate or accounts. Use of these methods, while simple, can unintentionally alter a person’s wishes. If you have one child, and two step-children by a later marriage, a well-meaning bank agent or financial manager can designate a transfer on death to your child when you meant to leave your estate to all three children. Trusts. While most often used to minimize estate taxes , or to provide for management by skilled money managers, the trust can, and is, often used to avoid the probate court. A trust can give you all of the income, as much of the principal

as you desire, and can be revoked. What makes it somewhat cumbersome is 1) its up-front cost, and 2) the transfer of all of your property into the trust. All property, including property acquired after the trust is in operation, must be titled in the trust. You must be ever-vigilant to insure that everything is owned by the trust. Wisconsin has a better way! The “Washington Will” The Washington Will, first developed in the State of Washington, is in fact a statutory agreement that simply avoids probate. Nothing has to be transferred-all assets are covered. If you have a Will that accomplishes everything you want, you can develop a Washington Will that attaches to your Will to transfer the property, but without the supervision of the probate court. It is inexpensive to draft, and takes no vigilance to ensure that all is covered as does a trust. ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS OF GOOD ESTATE PLANNING Every adult should have a Will, regardless of age, but that only represents one piece of a solid, comprehensive estate plan. A Health Care Attorney appoints a trusted person with making health care decisions for you if you are incapacitated. A Financial Power of Attorney does the same for making financial decisions for you if you are unable. A Declaration to Physicians (Wisconsin’s “Living Will”) directs your doctors if the Health Care Attorney is unavailable. COMMUNICATION IS KEY Think and discuss with your spouse and/or perhaps with your family, the effect that an unexpected inheritance may have. A windfall of the money that you have saved for your safety and the safety of your children may have exactly the opposite effect that you intend. Too much money at a young age can ruin a child’s life. Regret over a squandered inherence is all too common. Finally, an important part of an estate plan is communicating with your family about what they can expect to receive as part of the estate. You should be frank with them and, while you don’t necessarily have to go into every detail, they shouldn’t be too surprised by the size and nature of the inheritance they receive after your death. Many estate disputes and heartache can be avoided by simply engaging in open communication. This is another area in which a good estate planner can be helpful. Estate planning is their professional focus, and that includes the complicated family dynamics and concerns that typically accompany the process. With the right estate plan and experienced professionals to help, your estate can be a blessing that your heirs will treasure for the rest of their lives.

Is the center experienced in treating your condition? Make sure the staff have the

right experience, skills and equipment to provide the most innovative and effective treatments. How many hours of therapy a day will there be? Research how many hours of therapy are needed per day, based on your condition. Therapy should be spread out at different times during the day and be progressive as you gain strength and function. Find out if this center provides therapy on the weekends. What percentage of patients are sent home after receiving care? One indicator of effective rehabilitation is how successful a center is in returning patients home or to a lesser care environment. What is the average length of stay? Based on your condition, how long, on average, have other patients stayed in the rehab center? Data (from Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) shows that the average stay for a Medicare rehabilitation patient is approximately 23 days. Is there a “continuum of care?” Your rehabilitation process may not end with a stay in a rehab center. Are you able to return to the rehabilitation center you select for outpatient therapy, if needed, after discharge? After you establish a relationship with a therapist, it can be helpful to continue with the same therapist on your path to greater wellness. Is the center warm and inviting? When you call to set up an appointment, were you able to talk to a knowledgeable professional? When you walk into the facility, does someone greet you? Is the décor updated, appealing and functional? Does the patient room contain a phone, television, window for natural light and place for visitors? Rehabilitation centers vary greatly in the amenities they offer, as well as services that are available onsite. A rehab center should provide comfort as well as exceptional rehabilitation services. To find the rehabilitation center that will meet your needs and desires it is important to shop around and find a quality center that best fits your specific needs; the success of your rehabilitation depends upon it!

• Less than 40 percent of new auto shop customers are walkins. Most people are referred by friends, relatives, or co-workers. If you haven’t received any recommendations, make sure you ask your prospective auto shop for references. • If you travel often, look for an auto repair shop that offers a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for repetitive issues. • Check the shop’s range of services and whether the shop has the latest technologies to properly diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components, and high tech computer diagnostic work? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being

These factors all contribute to the level of professionalism, gaining customers’ trust, and to optimal service. • Look for brand-names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services, or Automotive Service Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90% or better and the ability to adequately perform the services they advertise. • Whether you are considering a big name franchise or an independently owned shop, compare the usual services and fees of each shop to familiarize yourself with average price ranges. Don’t select a shop based purely on lower prices; shoddy service or poor quality parts can mean more repairs and higher costs in the long run. After you’ve chosen a facility, try to establish a good working relationship with the mechanic. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to your new mechanic for a trial run such as an oil change or air conditioning check. Some services may be offered free of charge; these can provide you with a good idea of the service you will receive.

designers or others involved with books. You’ll feel informed about your community and probably meet likeminded people.

For readers or people who love to give books, the bookstore is still very important. Choosing the bookstore which will be part of your life is a fun decision to make. There are several factors which might influence your decision. In a metropolitan area, there are often many bookstores to choose from.

• Supporting local art: You may have a taste for art as well as books, so you might find a bookstore that exhibits local art.

Genre Bookstores Some bookstores try to fill a niche by focusing on one or two genres. These bookstores usually also offer a more general selection so as to appeal to a wider audience. There are mystery bookstores, spirituality bookstores, fantasy bookstores and others. General Bookstores Other bookstores stock books in all genres, which is great if you have eclectic taste. Some general bookstores build up their selection of books from one particular genre. Special Services by Bookstores • Guidance on what to read: A new, personal touch that many bookstores have added is a shelf of books recommended by their staff. This can yield good suggestions for your next read. Some bookstores employ experts in particular genres. These employees can help you find good books for your taste. • Special orders, mail order: Many bookstores do a lot of special ordering for their customers. The service is quick and free. You can request whether you would like to be notified with a phone call or email when your order arrives. Also, local bookstores do a lot of shipping, even for their local customers. The order often comes directly from their supplier and the service is quick and reliable. • Serving their community: Some bookstores feel like a gathering place for community. If this is important to you, shop around until you find the bookstore with the large bulletin board, coffee shop and special events involving local authors, graphic

• Inviting patrons to stay awhile: If you like to read in a comfortable chair, you’ll probably find a bookstore that caters to you. It is now common to see armchairs next to lovely tables and lamps where the shopper can enjoy reading in the store before deciding to buy. Used Bookstores Some people choose to buy used books as well as new. Bookstores sometimes sell both types. A used bookstore might be a way for you to recycle books you’ve read and decided not to keep. Sometimes you can earn money for your books, and sometimes you receive store credit. If you love to buy books, the store credit might be just the thing for you. Pricing Bookstores have varied pricing. If you need to save money, check out rewards programs. Some bookstores offer discounts after you have bought a certain number of books, or spent a certain amount of money. Sometimes the coffee shops within bookstores have a similar discount program. Also, be sure to get on the email or mailing list, if available, so that you can learn about special sales and promotions. Bookstores for Gift-Giving Books make wonderful gifts. Check whether the bookstore offers free gift wrapping services and check on their mail order service. If they sell greeting cards for you to enclose with your purchase, they are the one-stop shop you need. If they sell gift cards and gift certificates, ask to see them so you’ll know whether they would make an attractive gift. The bookstores of today must compete for customers, so their selection, services and environment can truly be outstanding.

We all like to believe that we’re good drivers. Yet even good drivers can’t control the actions of lessthan-good drivers. That’s why we have collision insurance, and accidents do happen, even through no fault of our own. In the event of an accident, you’ll most likely want to get your car repaired. It follows that you’ll want to get your car repairs done right by an auto body shop. But how do you select an auto body shop? If insurance is involved, the company may want you to go to a certain shop, or get multiple estimates. It is your right, however, to have the repairs done where you would like. An insurance company “approved shop is not an indication of its quality, but rather means only that the shop and insurance company have some sort of agreement on rate setting. And while getting more estimates is a good idea, it is not a legal requirement. High-quality shops should be able to complete all manner of body work, from minor touch-ups to a full-body repair. While dents and scratches are the most obvious needs, it is important to understand that even the smallest accident can throw your entire car into structural disharmony. A full-service body shop can look at not just the surface repairs, but also check to see if the overall structure of your vehicle, such as the frame, has been compromised. A good starting point is to talk to friends and family in your area that have had some first-hand experience dealing with auto body re-

pairs. They can share both good and bad experiences with various vendors. Once you have gotten a list of names, you can consult the Internet for more information and customer reviews. Internet testimonials, both positive and negative, need to be taken with a grain of salt. No business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Keep in mind that people are more apt to leave a negative review than a positive one. Furthermore, unscrupulous businesses can pad their own positive reviews and leave negative reviews for competitors. Then narrow your list and begin to shop, check for plainly displayed prices, certifications and guarantees. Get estimates, making sure that the estimates are thoroughly detailed so that, as you compare the proposed work with other shops, you can compare apples to apples. If you encounter an estimate that is substantially lower than others, be wary. Low prices may be tempting but they may also mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is not applied properly. Depending on what you need fixed, you may want to take your vehicle to a shop that does both auto body and mechanical repair so you don’t have to take your car to several places to restore it to how you want it to be. It is best is to talk with the shop manager/staff to get a sense of how they do business. Bring along a trusted friend or family member to reaffirm your feelings so that you’re confident you’re making the right choice.

want to install. If the irrigation system is a must, you may need to limit the number of times you have your lawn mowed each month.

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR When you start to think about hiring a landscaper, look at your neighbors’ lawns and gardens and look through landscape and garden magazines. This will help you find ways to express how your lawn to look and to identify the types of plants, trees and flowers that might best fit your landscape. IDENTIFY WHICH SERVICES YOU NEED Make a list of your specific needs and decide which services you will require from the landscaping company you hire. Most landscaping companies offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden installations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures. You may want a landscaper who will mow your lawn regularly but find that having someone who prunes the trees is more critical. Be sure to identify which services you need and which you want. Then you’ll be ready to begin searching for the right landscaper. KNOW YOUR BUDGET Cost is always a major consideration when hiring a landscaper, and the best way to stick to a budget is to set one. Be sure you know how much you are willing to pay for the landscaping services you need and what you can afford and are willing to spend annually on your landscaping. This will help you to determine which services on the list you created are truly necessities. In order to stick to your budget, you may need to make sacrifices. If you need to have a new landscaping wall built in order to protect your home, you may need to hold off on the top-notch sprinkler system you

GET REFERRALS Word of mouth is a great form of advertising, and a good landscaper will come with excellent recommendations. If your neighbors have been using a service and you like what you see, ask them which company they are working with — and ask them about the pros and cons that they see with the services. If your friends or family use a landscaper, seek their advice as well. You may also want to do an online search for local landscaping companies. No matter what, check the BBB and the Internet for consumer reviews of the companies you find. If you see many negative reviews for one company, it may be better to move to the next one on your list. CONSIDER AVAILABILITY One of the first questions that you should ask any landscaper you interview is when they will be able to complete your limitedtime projects and how often they will be available for maintenance. If you want to be home when the landscaper is working, be sure that they work in your area when you can be there. You’ll also want to address other questions you have. For example, if your community has noise regulations, ask each landscape company what they will do to adhere to them. IN SUMMARY Finding the right landscaper for your needs takes a knowledge of landscaping techniques and confidence in the company you hire. Know your needs, ask for referrals, and do your research as thoroughly as possible to make sure that you choose the right landscaper for your needs.

how to

Choose a Propane Company When choosing a propane company, here are some tips to consider. accessibility/reliability knowledgeable These are critical factors to consider when choosing a propane company. By choosing a propane specific company, one that focuses on propane delivery solely, will ensure that you receive safe, dependable propane delivery. Because propane can be dangerous if not properly handled and transported, any signs of carelessness could put your safety and property at risk. Look at the companies propane tanks and delivery vehicles and visit their storefront. How the company physically appears is a direct reflection on whether they are equipped to safely and professionally service you. By choosing a local, independently owned company, you will have better access to them through their extended service hours. They invest in training their employees and employ knowledgeable staff that will come to know you personally; and if you need to you can even speak to the owner of the company. price Propane is one of the third most widely available fuels. It is also the most economically priced heating fuel. It is important to recognize that no single company will have the lowest price all year. Watch out for companies that charge hidden fees like: fuel surcharges, haz-mat fees and program fees. More importantly choose a full

service propane provider that is licensed and qualified to work on your other gas appliances within your home as well as offer competitively priced gas. Inquire if the company provides a twelve, level monthly payment plan, this helps you manage your heating cost evenly throughout the year. background Ask your propane provider for paperwork that shows they have gone through the proper training requirements as well as how much liability insurance they carry. Choose to do business with a company that has an established service reputation in your area and avoid new companies just starting out. Check with your states’ Better Business Bureau to inquire about any unresolved complaints that may have been filed against the propane company. new technology Choose a company that offers their customers access to and service on the new highefficiency, cost saving propane products that are now available on the market such as: tankless water heaters, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, weed trimmers and mosquito magnets. The company you choose should also be able to correspond with you electronically. There certainly is due diligence required in picking the right propane company. But if you take your time and pick the right one, you’re more likely to be satisfied with their service to provide you with safe, clean and comfortable heating for many years to come.

Choose a Hearing Aid Over 40 million individuals in the U.S. experience some form of hearing loss. Because of this, hearing aids are a popular way to correct these hearing issues. Loss of hearing can be devastating, but there is no reason to allow this to control your life.

Fortunately, there is an answer for these individuals who have severe hearing loss but do not want to have to wear large devices that protrude extensively from their ear.

It is easy to be self-conscious about the appearance and feel of the hearing aid. Because the aids are unnatural, it is not uncommon for patients to feel deficient when they need them. The majority of modern hearing aids are very discreet and blend into the ear area in terms of design and color, though. Because of this, it is often quite difficult for other people to notice that the patient is wearing the aid.

There are numerous specialists who are licensed and able to treat patients using hearing aids and prescribe the correct aid. A hearing aid specialist will determine the right hearing aid style that will be the most comfortable and will also successfully correct your hearing. It is important to choose a local hearing aid dispenser who is available to service and maximize your hearing benefit.

One popular hearing aid is the kind that can fit completely within the ear canal. Hearing aids that were first used were big, bulky and obvious. The hearing aid that is placed within the ear canal, however, allows patients to receive all benefits that can correct moderate hearing loss while at the same time maintaining the natural appearance of the ear.

Always ensure that you are aware of the price of the hearing aid before you agree to purchase any of the available devices. All aids, particularly the smaller ones that are placed within the ear canal, are quite expensive. Even the hearing aids which are traditional and are placed on the outer ear cost significant amounts of money.

Another style of hearing aid which has become increasingly popular is one located behind the ear. This type of aid is particularly popular with women as long hair is able to cover the hearing aid so that it cannot be seen by other people. They are also popular because they provide greater hearing magnification for patients who have worse hearing loss. For the most part, individuals who are suffering from severe hearing loss were given large hearing aids that filled the whole inner ear.

how to guide

Ensure also that the provider describes all of the costs to you before you purchase the hearing aid. This will make your decision more informed. You may be tempted to purchase mail order hearing aids. But, the advantage of lower pricing does not outweigh the potential damage to current hearing. Hearing aids are vital devices for improving the quality of your life, and they need to be carefully studied in order to know with 100 percent certainty that you have the right hearing aid for your needs. Quality products and excellent customer service are two important things to consider when choosing the right store from which to purchase your new appliances. You should understand the variety of brands and items the store stocks. The more brands they carry, the more likely you will find the appliances that best suit your needs. A good appliance store will also carry the brands that guarantee their items for quality, durability and workmanship. Being treated well is an integral part of the appliance-shopping experience. Visit the appliance store, and talk to the sales representatives directly. They should be able to ask the right questions to determine your needs and then match up the most appropriate appliance options to fit those needs. The best sales representatives will be able to answer your questions and provide the features and benefits of each item in an efficient manner. When speaking with the sales representative, it’s also important to understand the life cycles of the appliances you’re looking at

purchasing. This prepares you if something does wear out and needs to be replaced. Along with that, it’s important to know the store’s policies regarding warranties and repairs before you purchase. Another step in finding the right appliance store is to check out advertisements in the newspaper, on TV and online. Appliance stores that regularly advertise appliance promotions, such as sales and rebate offers, are doing so to offer you the best value for your investment. Note those promotions and be sure to discuss them with the sales representative. He or she should know about these offers when you ask and be able to give you more details regarding the pricing and promotions if necessary. In addition, it’s essential to understand delivery policies. A store that offers free delivery within a certain geographic range is better than one that charges for each and every item delivered. Finally, you should shop for new appliances with a checklist. This will help to remind you for the factors that are important to you when making your purchase. The sales representative should have no problem working through each item on your checklist to suggest the perfect appliance. Keeping these practices in mind will help you choose the right store and ensure that the appliances you purchase will make your life easier and suit your needs for years to come.

how to

Choose an Electrician

We tend to take our every day “creature comforts” for granted. We flip a light switch in our homes and the lights go on. We adjust the thermostat and the house gets warmer or cooler. Our electrical systems generally work so seamlessly that we tend not to think about them until we have a problem. A problem or a power outage reminds us that just about everything we do, from cooking to cleaning, depends on electricity. Electricity and the electrical systems in our homes operate everything from kitchen appliances to the hot water heater and the entertainment center. As simple as it may seem to us as consumers of electricity, problems with the electrical system and wiring in a home are not problems for the average homeowner to attempt to resolve. The electrical current running through our homes is a huge benefit but it is also capable of causing grave injury or even death to someone who does not understand the dangers. And, improper repair creates a real fire danger. For that reason, it is wise to hire a licensed electrician to make any electrical repairs. Since most of us do not deal with electricians every day, how do we insure that we have found a knowledgeable and experienced professional? Here are a few simple tips that will help to ensure that you find the right licensed electrician for your project: 1. If you sense that there is a problem, do not wait until it is an emergency. Often you will have a warning such as a flickering light or an outlet that doesn’t work unless you jiggle the plug. The time to act is when you suspect a problem. Take that opportunity to ask family, friends and neighbors whether they know any experienced electricians. 2. Contact that electrician and request information about their license, availability, experience and rate.

3. If the electrician you have called cannot provide you with references and a current license, call someone else. A reputable and experienced electrician will take care to keep his or her license valid and current.

4.

Ask for references from recently completed projects. A reputable electrician will understand and gladly comply with your requests. If they cannot provide references, do not hire that electrician. They may do substandard work or not have recent experience.

5. As an additional check, especially if it is gong to be a major project, check with the local Better Business Bureau for complaints. It is possible that even an excellent electrician will have a disgruntled customer or two. So, if there are any complaints, check out how those complaints were resolved. 6. Use the above guidelines to contact at least three electricians. Have them come to your home for the estimate. This will allow you to see if they dressed professionally and check out their personality and demeanor. This will allow you to compare rates and get a feel for what to expect. 7. Make sure that you get all estimates in writing. Read over the estimates to insure that everything is covered including a description of the job to be performed, total cost, time for completion, insurance coverage and clean-up. If you have any questions, make sure they are answered and included in the written estimate before you sign a contract or agreement. Ask about guarantee and warranties. 8. Keep in mind that the lowest price is not necessarily the only criteria you should consider. Many times you will get what you pay for. The electrical system in your home is far too important for you to choose simply by price. 9. If you are undecided, you can “audition” a potential electrician by asking that they perform a small repair before you hire them for a large project. You can, for instance, hire the electrician to replace an electrical outlet. This will allow you to get a feel for whether the person starts on time and has a good work ethic. By following these simple suggestions, you are much more likely to find that perfect electrician for your repair or remodeling project.
