Community Impact

Education, Income & Health The building blocks of a successful community.

Collective impact occurs when multiple organizations work together to solve a specific social issue using a common agenda. It takes everyone working together. Cecilia’s story is an example of how United Way, in partnership with organizations, mobilizes long-lasting change to build a resilient community.

United Way’s goal is to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of social issues in our community. And we’re not alone. EDUCATION, INCOME & HEALTH are also the indicators by which the United Nations measures community development worldwide. Through our Collective Impact Model, we work to make sure Manitowoc County services address root cause social issues collaboratively to create community impact. Hi my name is Cecilia and I have schizophrenia. In 2010 I tried to commit suicide and ended up in the hospital. During my stay at the hospital my daughter got taken away from me because I was mentally unstable. When I was in the hospital my grandma was trying to find a place for me to be involved with. She found Painting Pathways Clubhouse. Painting Pathways collaborated with agencies such as the Domestic Violence Center to support appropriate housing as well as participating in groups in which I could address the abuse which pushed my earlier suicide attempt. I became actively involved with Painting Pathways Clubhouse. Painting Pathways gave me structure in my day and supported me through the court ordered conditions. In 2011 I had my second child. At the hospital, the social worker came and took her. I began to self-medicate with alcohol as the depression became paramount. I went into a downward spiral then and began self-medicating with heroin. The need to escape my painful life of failure

UNITED WAY OF MANITOWOC COUNTY

was so great, that after a while heroin was not enough. I began to use crystal meth. After being arrested for prostitution, a means to seeking my need for drugs, I left Milwaukee on a bus to the next place I could land. In March 2013, I had a breakdown and ended up in the hospital again. At the end of March I entered rehab at MARCO Services. During rehab I reconnected with Painting Pathways. Collaboratively, Painting Pathways and MARCO supported me in achieving my goal. Not only have they helped me, they helped my family, when they didn’t know what to do. Today I am 2 1/2 years clean, have my children in my life and still go to Painting Pathways. I have been able to participate in the Wisconsin Initiative for Stigma Elimination training and am available to present this program to community providers. It has helped me build my confidence in public speaking. For the first time, I am completely free of my past I am currently in the process of enrolling at Lakeshore Technical College and as I explore new career opportunities, I have a sense of excitement and joy that I forgot how to experience. I am also looking at being trained as a peer support specialist as I want to give back to the community by sharing the hope that I have received from my friends at PPC. Going to Painting Pathways gives me hope, that I can recover from my mental illness. I want to give back to the clubhouse for everything they have done for me and my family. Painting Pathways is like my family and thank you to them for being there for me. My success is due to the guidance, collaborative efforts, and support of these organizations. Written by Cecilia

Sam dreamed of one day attending college but doubted that he’d ever be able to afford it. It was extremely difficult for him to focus on school work when all his needs weren’t met at home. Sam knew how hard his single parent worked to provide for him, but things were difficult. Sam lacked access to the help and resources he needed to complete his homework and it became less of a priority. The Look Ahead Lakers program provided positive adult role models for Sam who cared and encouraged him to succeed. With a lot of work and encouragement, Sam completed all his assignments and knows he has a better chance of completing high school and going to college. ● 1,300 children received age-appropriate books to read in their homes. ● 63 percent of youth improved scores in at least one development area.

Sherry was homeless before coming to the shelter. She worked approximately 32-36 hours per week: however, she was unable to pay rent following a major medical incident and was evicted. Sherry has a diagnosed physical challenge and mental health challenge. This made it a constant struggle to maintain employment. Through participation in the Bridges Case Management program, Sherry learned new skills to help her be more self-sufficient. After 58 days in shelter, Sherry transitioned into a local housing complex. As of July 2015, Sherry will have been on her own for one year! ● 236 individuals improved understanding of their financial situation. ● 27 individuals became more self-sufficient and contributed back to the community.

Jon had attempted to receive mental health services throughout Northesast Wisconsin, but due to his financial situation, he was either placed on a lengthy wait-list or was refused services. At the time of his initial appointment at Holy Family Memorial Behavioral Health, he was feeling hopeless. When he met with the psychiatrist, Jon was moved to tears and felt a great sense of relief. Jon continues to follow his treatment plan which has helped him to maintain his overall well-being. ● 739 individuals minimized risks by learning protective factors. ● 332 adults and children received mental health evaluation and treatment.

United Way Sponsored Programs

RSVP in the Community The Retired and Senior Program of Manitowoc County has enjoyed bringing volunteer services to our county for over 40 years. Currently sponsored by the United Way Manitowoc County, our local RSVP is a member of America’s Senior Corps with nearly 500,000 volunteers nationwide. Locally our RSVP has 412 members who serve our county at 43 different volunteer sites. This past year RSVP volunteers served more than 45,000 hours (an estimated monetary value of over $875,000) while seeking to improve lives and strengthen the communities within Manitowoc County. The dual purpose of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is to engage persons 55 and older in volunteer service based upon each individual’s skills and interests and provide a meaningful volunteer experience. When asked what she enjoys most as a volunteer at Jackson Elementary School in Manitowoc, RSVP volunteer, Bess Schwartz replied, “I just love working with the 1st grade children, they are so eager to learn and they feel proud of their reading abilities. This experience has enabled me to feel great satisfaction in seeing these children improve their reading skills.” Bess encourages more people to volunteer their time and skills, “volunteering creates self-satisfaction especially as one ages and certainly helps keep a person mentally alert.” Steve Kleinfeldt principal at Jackson Elementary voiced his excitement about the RSVP volunteers, “Our volunteers are very friendly and enjoyable people to have in the building. They and the staff work together as colleagues and the students enjoy working with them so much, that when it is not their turn to do so they are disappointed.” RSVP volunteers also serve in our Senior Centers, Traci Hoelltke, volunteer coordinator at the Two Rivers Senior Center enthusiastically explains, “volunteers are vital to the Two Rivers Senior Center, without them, we could not

provide the services we do, they do so much from delivering meals on wheels to people who are homebound, driving the TRUST car so that those unable to drive can still be independent and go to their doctor appointments and drive them to the grocery store. Our volunteers … invaluable!” Chris Behnke, the manager of Peter’s Pantry expressed her gratitude also, “I can’t begin to communicate how important it is for the pantry to work with RSVP, an organization with the sole purpose of finding and placing volunteers. This allows us to spend less time recruiting help and more time fulfilling our mission.” More volunteers are always needed. Make a difference in the life of a child by becoming a reader or tutor, assist in a local food pantry, help in delivering and preparing meals, join in helping in the One to One Adult Literacy Program, or maybe transport elderly to their appointments opportunities are everywhere. If you are interested in giving back to your community, helping others, making new friends, feeling vital and appreciated, growing in knowledge and skills, exploring new interests then please consider joining us as an RSVP member by contacting RSVP Director Tim Lindloff, 920-682-8888 ext. 107 or tim@unitedwaymanitowoccounty.org.

UNITED WAY OF MANITOWOC COUNTY

Herald Times Reporter | Lakeshore Chronicle

From the Executive Director Dear Community, United Way Manitowoc County’s goal is to provide the community with opportunities to solve problems at the root-cause level in a collaborative and fiscally responsible way. Bringing together individuals, businesses, government, EDUCATION, and nonprofits all working diligently to create positive long-lasting change in our community makes our mission unique. By working together we find solutions to issues that no single donor, charity, or government agency can handle alone. Programs apply for grants through our Community Impact process. This differs from the past in which operational costs of agencies were supported through financial allocations. Grants are awarded to programs that work collaboratively, and show measurable outcomes and results in areas of need in our community. As a competitive grant process it requires specific criteria with several accountability measures to ensure that donated dollars are being invested into community change efforts in the areas of EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH. Our Community Impact Model is designed to support initiative-based work and fund grants that provide an opportunity to create longlasting positive change. Our grant process requires specific information that documents the program’s plan, the impact it will make in the community, along with the fiscal responsibility and stewardship of the granted funds. By focusing on the root-cause of an issue and being accountable for not only the dollars raised but distributed, we are able to confidently say that the donations given to the United Way are invested in creating positive change. The United Way strives to mobilize our community around a shared sense of purpose. Through staff, community volunteers, and Board, we work collaboratively to focus on issues that are most important to Manitowoc County. The United Way envisions a community where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through EDUCATION, INCOME stability, and HEALTH lives. As an agent of community change we strive to inspire hope, create opportunity, and champion people. These are bold goals, but definitely achievable! We all win when children succeed in school, when families are financially stable, when people are HEALTHY, and when everyone has a safe place to live.

United Way Day of Caring – Comcast Cares Day

Save the date! April 23, 2016 In April 2015, United Way and Comcast brought the community together to construct the Community Gardens. Day of Caring continues to grow and its impact has expanded. On this amazing day, over 350 individuals and corporate teams volunteered their time and talent. Day of Caring is an opportunity for our community to come together and address the issues that matter most to us. United Way Manitowoc County and Comcast invite you to engage, connect, and experience what it means to LIVE UNITED at our United Way Day of Caring - Comcast Cares Day. When United Way invests time and resources into these three impact areas, we efficiently and effectively advance the common good for all.
