Tough Love
Publisher Scott Johnson
Love is hard. Can I get an “amen?” Is it fulfilling and invigorating and empowering and intoxicating? Of course. True love can be everything wonderful in this world. But sooner or later, even the most pristine love will challenge us and maybe make us question our own sanity. I’ve been there. Have you? (Please say yes.) I’d like to think that surviving these tests that life has a way of dropping on you when you least expect it only makes us stronger. I hope that’s true. But somewhere along the line, love will make you feel weak and beaten. And that’s okay. Our issue this month is dedicated to love and all its head-scratching mystery. Whether you are happily single, a longtime married or in those fantastical early stages of a new romance, love is a choice. It isn’t something that happens to us, it’s something we do. Every day. We give and receive it. We determine the parameters. Choosing to love can be the hardest thing we are called to do. And I’m not only talking romantic love. It’s hard to love your husband when he is letting you down because he is human. It’s hard to love your children when they are slamming the door in your well-meaning face. It’s hard to love your dog when he is having an accident on your brand new rug. Again. So when the loving gets tough, remember that it’s what got you here in the first place. Maybe love got you married. Maybe it made you a mother, an aunt, or grandma. Maybe it was blind love that led you to a career others thought was far-fetched. Our Spotlight woman this month knows the feeling. Turn to page 6 to read how a love for writing brought local author Melissa Gorzelanczyk to publish her first novel, “Arrows,” out this month. (It’s a love story, of course.) Love inspires beautiful things, doesn’t it? While this issue is all about love and relationships, I don’t really believe that love is all we need. I think we need honesty, respect, a sense of humor and sometimes wine. But it’s a good start.

Penning a Passion Debut author Melissa Gorzelanczyk writes her life’s love story By Amelia Compton Wolff Photos by Mike Peters on location at The Reader’s Loft and A’bravo, Green Bay Hair and makeup provided by Lindsay Weyenberg, Salon Fifty Four, Green Bay
Melissa Gorzelanczyk answers the door in yoga pants and a Nirvana band t-shirt. “This is what I normally wear so I figured I’d be real about it,” the 34-year-old says, walking into the kitchen/workspace of her Howard home complete with a standing desk rigged up using a stool atop the kitchen island. “It’s not glamorous by any means, but it works.” As unglamorous as Gorzelanczyk makes her day-to-day out to be, there’s something undeniably dreamy about quitting your day job and pursuing your true love. This is exactly what Gorzelanczyk did – in 2010 she said sayonara to
her job as editor of YOU Magazine (yes, this YOU Magazine) to write books for a living. In this unassuming space, Gorzelanczyk now spends her days writing, the fulfillment of a dream she has had since childhood. “When I was 9 years old I decided I wanted to be a writer so I started writing a book because that’s what writers do. It was terrible,” Gorzelanczyk says with a laugh. Her writing prowess has improved over the years. See for yourself when her debut young adult novel “Arrows” hits shelves January 26. The novel is a modern cupid story set in present-day Wisconsin combining elements of Greek mythology with the drama of MTV’s Teen Mom. Many people envy Gorzelanczyk for more than just her casual work day attire. She lives with authenticity (see trusty Nirvana shirt) and boldness (paying off a mountain of debt and leaving corporate life behind), but that doesn’t mean there’s an absence of

self-doubt. A framed print of the Holstee Manifesto hangs in Gorzelanczyk’s home. The first line reads “This is your life.” It serves as an encouraging reminder during those moments of uncertainty. And when you are a debut author with a career on the brink, there are many of those moments, Gorzelanczyk says. “I say this often when I’m not sure what decision is the right choice: ‘This is your life,’” she says. “When you say that out loud to yourself in the middle of doubt, it really helps put things in perspective.”
Dreams & Determination
For Gorzelanczyk, the steps toward realizing her dream of being an author began early. She was homeschooled and spent much of her time growing up in Prentice, Wisconsin writing short stories for fun. “I think my sister hated me a little bit because I would always make her read what I wrote and want to know if it made her happy or sad,”

says Gorzelanczyk, the oldest of six children. After graduating from high school Gorzelanczyk had several different jobs before landing a position at TP Printing in Abbotsford as a proofreader. She had originally applied for an editing position in a move fueled by “foolish confidence,” according to Gorzelanczyk, who doesn’t see that as a bad thing. “You have to take those leaps. The worst they can say is no,” she says. “We get caught up in thinking we need all these qualifications to do certain things and really you just need to be open to learn. Unless you’re a surgeon or something.” Gorzelanczyk moved to Green Bay in 2000 and took a position at the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Here she spent the next decade in several roles, ending her career as editor of YOU Magazine. Writing novels became a more urgent desire for Gorzelanczyk, who had been inspired to start a blog after reading one of her favorites, Zen Habits. With the support of her husband, Shea, the couple paid off more than $42,000 dollars of debt in about two years which made it possible for Gorzelanczyk to leave her 8-5 gig and write fulltime. Focusing solely on writing was necessary for Gorzelanczyk, who admits there are plenty of authors managing fulltime jobs, but she needed the support of her family to make it a reality. “I’m a big believer in balance. You could die tomorrow,” she says. “Do you really want to live your life working all the time? I didn’t. So I asked Shea to get on board with that and thankfully he did. He is my biggest fan.”

Gorzelanczyk with her husband, Shea, who were married in 2006.
You might say the feeling is mutual. Gorzelanczyk dedicated “Arrows” to her husband with the inscription, “For Shea, whose love empowered me.” She says Aaryn, the book’s leading male and love interest of main character, Karma, has a lot of qualities similar to Shea. “The way Aaryn treats Karma is a lot like the way Shea treats me,” Gorzelanczyk says. “I think being with Shea has solidified the truth that love makes us better. Not just as a couple, but as individuals.”
A Book is Born
Gorzelanczyk began drafting “Arrows” in 2012. That year she attended a Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) conference which helped refine her writing. “I went to that conference and that was the month I started writing “Arrows,” she says. “I learned a lot about plot, structure and how to grow a character. I started writing in October and finished in January.” The story follows Karma Clark, a dance prodigy from Wisconsin, who was shot with a love arrow by Aaryn, a cupid from Mount Olympus. Unfortunately for Karma, Aaryn realizes too late that the other arrow in his pack meant for Karma’s boyfriend, Danny, is useless. This leaves a clueless Karma pining after Danny no matter how badly he treats her. Gorzelanczyk began querying literary agents the old fashioned way, but ended up meeting her agent, Carrie Howland of Donadio & Olson, on Twitter. They both

participated in #PitMad, a Twitter pitch contest. (For those of you who like this sort of thing, Gorzelanczyk sent out 63 submissions, 21 of which were for “Arrows, before it was picked up by Howland.) About four months later, “Arrows was sold to Random House/Delacorte Press. Gorzelanczyk believes the book received interest from agents and publishers because it takes a relatable theme (love gone awry) and puts a fresh spin on it with the introduction of cupids and mythology. “I don’t think there are cupid books in the way I wrote it in that there are multiple cupids. I also think people liked the idea of cupid’s arrow gone wrong because love goes wrong in real life, she says. “People fall for the wrong guy all the time, almost as if they’re under a spell. Leaving your day job to write, revise, query and sell a book has been a long road, Gorzelanczyk says. It isn’t for the faint of heart.
“You have to be willing to work really hard, harder than you are right now, she says. “It’s really an exploration of yourself as a person which is a little scary. Even with all the blood, sweat and tears (“Every book I write, I cry, she says), Gorzelanczyk is quick to acknowledge gratitude for her newfound career. “Not everyone in the world is as blessed as me to be able to leave a good-paying job to pursue the work of their heart, she says. “I know I’m blessed. Following your heart is a bold move, whether you’re chasing true love or a career. For Gorzelanczyk, it was both. “I believe in risk because with risk there is intention, she says. “Even if you fail, your intentions haven’t changed. Get back up and take the next step to achieving your dreams.

Can you name a few items from your man’s closet that you’re regularly caught stealing for yourself? Definitely! I’m notorious for this and surely not the only one obsessed with my husband’s flannel button ups and shrunken sweaters (yes, my fault...before I had quite mastered my keeper of the house duties). Honestly, I’m also known for stealing his hats, scarves, and lately even a watch or two. What’s mine is yours and so on, right? Though many of us have managed to quite literally borrow from our man, it’s simply a fact that menswear details, even in womenswear, are right up there among our favorite wardrobe accents. It’s about those chic little touches, the wonderful tailoring and cool details. The easiness of menswear proportions and those oversized fits that create an instant desire to curl up in front of the fire with a coffee and a good book. And we love it most when menswear details are mixed in with our feminine pieces, those adventurous pops of an inner style rebel carefully interwoven with our notoriously romantic side. It allows for a wonderful contrast of textures and an irresistible silhouette.
The Sp orty Mix and Match The cocoon coat is our favorite new shape for winter. An oversize fit with large lapels and a cross-over closure, it keeps you toasty and feels fresh for the season. A relaxed plaid button up looks feminine with its flowy fishtail hemline and styled with a pair of patchwork high waist boyfriend jeans, it’s a mix and match made in heaven. Accenting your look with a menswear inspired accessory allows for a fun combination with the more feminine pieces. We’re especially loving these quirky fashion glasses. From Besselli – Jacket, $154. Shirt, $108. Jeans, $128. Boots – T J Maxx.

your style A Subtle Touch of Tomboy Every girl loves her relaxed “tomboy” staples, particularly those oversized sweaters for long winters or comfy lace up oxfords. But oftentimes we simply need a little feminine flounce and a dash of romantic. Lucky for us, the two look incredible combined into a pretty tomboy mix so don’t be afraid to combine your sweetest favorites with those borrowed-from-the-boys pieces. Here we’ve styled a baggy sweater and chunky menswear inspired watch with a ball gown skirt and flirty pink heels. Sweater – Loft. Skirt – Shabby Apple. Heels – Sam Edelman. Watch – Fossil.
The Vintage Darling Vintage lovers have a knack for finding the best menswear inspired pieces at incredible steals and this look is no exception. A tailored tweed blazer plays perfectly against the cozy cable knit textures of a cream sweater, a smart layer that adds that finishing touch. A hint of luxurious brown leather peeks from beneath and shows off a little leg. Paired with chocolate heeled brogues, this look feels powerful yet soft. Sweater – $212, Besselli. Skirt – Plato’s Closet. Blazer – thrifted. Shoes – T J Maxx. Hair and makeup for this look provided by Mint Salon, Green Bay. 22 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | january 2016

Kwanzaa Celebration

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that honors African heritage in African-American culture, with a special focus on the Seven Principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Hosted by UWGB in the Phoenix Room, the celebration was a collaborative effort with NWTC and St. Norbert College and included compelling speakers as well as traditional music, dance and food.
