All you need is love

Publisher Scott Johnson

Remember when Valentine’s Day meant making a construction paper card holder to hang on your school desk? When one evening was spent tearing apart perforated pink and red cards to drop in each of your classmates’ carefully created boxes? Back then, things were simple. Sure, there was the inevitable jealousy when you discovered your friend’s mom bought her the trendy boy band of the month valentines to distribute, but that was pretty much the extent of it. Now there’s pressure. Pressure to have the perfect Valentine’s Day outfit. Pressure to have the perfect date. Pressure to have a date at all. Hopefully this issue will help ease any unnecessary Valentine’s Day pressure. If you’re in a relationship and searching for a gift, check out this month’s Top 10 (pg. 6) which is chock-full of presents just for him. In “The Feminine Tomboy” (pg. 22) fashion contributor Kirsty Gungor takes a look at how menswear can work for us ladies, or how we can work menswear. Who would have thought that a plaid button-up would pair so well with a full tulle skirt? Try one of these looks for your valentine celebration – just don’t blame us when your man takes issue with you raiding his closet. This month’s Spotlight profiles Gabrielle Valdez Dow, vice president of marketing and fan engagement for the Green Bay Packers. She’s the woman working behind the scenes to make sure you have a blast on game day and are an important part of the action at Lambeau Field. As one of just a couple dozen executive level women in the NFL, Gabrielle knows a thing or two about working with a male majority. Her plucky attitude and fiery spirit no doubt give her a leg up. Get to know Gabrielle and her road to Lambeau on page 8. Of course, the Man Issue wouldn’t be complete without our tribute to single guys in our second annual Most Eligible Bachelors feature. Turn to page 12 for eight of Green Bay’s most eligible guys who you need to know. Like what you see? Grab your single friends (and attached observers!) and join us at The Libertine on January 22 from 5 – 8 p.m. to meet the guys in person. You won’t be sorry. And if you’re single this Valentine’s Day, relish in it. Grab your best single friends and hit the town or stay in if that feels better. It doesn’t have to be a day of celebrating romantic love that currently exists. Valentine’s Day should be about celebrating all love – romantic, platonic, past, present and future. With love,

Green, Gold & Gabrielle

Gabrielle Valdez Dow inspires Lambeau to get loud By Amelia Compton Wolff Photos by Mike Peters on location at Lambeau Field, Green Bay Hair and makeup services provided by Victoria Stencil of Salon Fifty Four, Green Bay

Gabrielle Valdez Dow is a straight shooter. The 43-year-old mother of two has infectious energy and isn’t afraid to call it like she sees it – two traits that no doubt support her fast-paced career with the National Football League (NFL). Dow is the new vice president of marketing and fan engagement for the Green Bay Packers. In this role, Dow oversees the Packers’ retail operations, media group, brand engagement and game day entertainment. This includes everything from supervising the Packers Pro Shop to revamping the Packers game day playlist with 500 new songs. She received the job offer from Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy on May 8, the first day of the 2014 NFL draft. “That was kind of interesting,” Dow remembers. “When I talked to him I asked aren’t you a little busy? Are you drafting me?” Putting together the right team, whether on or off the field, is vital. Who would understand this better than the Packers? In her first few months on the job, Dow has hit the ground running, getting to know her behind-the-scenes team and how her new home base operates.

“The great thing about this organization is that collaboration with colleagues is an everyday process,” Dow says. “I’m truly blessed to be here.”

The Road to Lambeau

Dow says one of her greatest professional accomplishments has been finding her footing in the NFL, an arena typically seen as a man’s domain. “I’m pretty proud to be a female in a male-dominated industry,” the San Francisco native says. “You can Google how many executive women work in the NFL and I don’t think it’s a very high number.” Dow is right. According to the 2014 Racial and Gender Report Card released by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida, there were only 21 women at or above the vice president level during the NFL’s 2013 season. But this never intimidated Dow, who has a history of success in professional sports marketing. She spent two years with the NHL’s Florida Panthers where she directed the marketing of hockey, concerts and family entertainment, and four years with AEG marketing the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.

Dow joined the Packers from the Baltimore Ravens where she had served as vice president of marketing for the past eight years. Dow’s husband, Jeff, tipped her off about the job opening with the Packers. It offered Dow some perks such as being closer to Jeff’s parents who live in Port Washington. “It was an opportunity to be near family and to work for a franchise that is almost 100 years old with a brand that is not only national, but international,” Dow says. Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy says it was Dow’s experience with the Ravens that initially caught his attention and in her short time with the Packers, everyone from the fans to the players have noticed her positive impact. “She’s come in with a lot of great ideas and changes, but she’s also aware of the history of the Packers and our way of doing things and doesn’t take away from the great tradition we have here,” Murphy says. “Her energy and enthusiasm in conjunction with experience is a great combination.” Dow admits she didn’t get into sports because of a life-long passion for the game. She graduated from the University of Oregon with an English degree and eventually enrolled in law school at the prompting of her father. At the same time, Dow was working toward a master’s in business administration and needed to pick an area of concentration. She landed on sports marketing. While attending law school, Dow became a law clerk for the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team and later worked as their public relations intern. “That’s when I fell in love with the business,” Dow says. “I fell in love with putting butts in seats and the excitement of an arena. It will always be about the team, but I love the whole business behind everything else that goes into building that.” In the world of professional sports, Dow says she has never felt at a disadvantage as a woman. She attributes her success to working hard, being accountable and playing well with others. “Any business is tough as a female executive, but if you stay true to your spirit and who you are, I think anyone can be successful,” she says.

#getloudlambeau

As vice president of marketing and fan engagement, Dow’s job is extremely varied. During the season, she’s planning events and games, in the off season, she’s strategizing the upcoming season’s initiatives and programs. “A lot of people think it’s a glamorous job and I must hang out with players and coaches and sit around talking football all day,” she says. “It’s 10 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | january 2015

absolutely not anything like that. Aaron Rodgers and I do not have lunch together, unfortunately.” Maybe dining with the quarterback isn’t one of her job’s benefits, but Dow says that working for the Green Bay Packers does offer a different perspective from the other teams for which she’s worked. “Every football team is a great communal way to break bread with family and friends…It’s a great community venture. But here it’s much different. It’s beyond that. It’s bigger,” Dow says. “The community here resonates so much more than any other community I’ve been in and that’s really neat. I’ve never seen that and I’ve lived all over the United States.” Green Bay’s “nice guy” reputation is one the community is proud of and from a marketing perspective Dow wants to capitalize on that while simultaneously striking fear in the hearts of the opposing team. Achieving this juxtaposition might seem like a tall order, but Dow is ready for the challenge.

“We want to create that kind of mentality where [Lambeau] is a historical, bucket list destination, the Disneyland of sports venues, but we’re also here to win and that’s our primary goal, she says. Two of Dow’s main goals this season are to improve the game day experience for fans and to really engage them from the moment they step foot in the famed Lambeau parking lot. To get fans on their feet during games and to get them loud, Dow is leading the creation of several new video features which are shown in game and meant to energize the crowd, and in turn, the players on the field. “These features were done to get the players inspired. The players feed off the energy of the fans, there’s no doubt about it, Dow says. “We want to inspire our guys. We want them to feel the energy and for the crowd to feel the energy. We want to invigorate our players on the field and remind them they kick butt.

But it’s not just about inspiring fans on game day. Dow wants fans to feel connected and engaged 365 days a year. Dow hopes to create a women’s program for female Packer fans much like she did for the Baltimore Ravens. There she founded “Purple, a first of its kind female fan club. “I was looking at research and realizing that the league’s fan base is 48-49 percent female. What were we doing to talk to them? And we weren’t doing anything, Dow says. “I wasn’t satisfied with how we were reaching out to our female fan base, understanding that they control the purse strings of the family and they have different needs and wants than our male fan base. The Ravens fan club still exists today and has grown to 30,000 members. Dow anticipates that a similar women’s club would work well for female Packer fans. “I’m very excited about starting a women’s program here, Dow says. “I don’t know what it’s going to look like, I don’t have a landscape yet, but I think it will marry something similar to [Purple] but be much bigger. But don’t expect Dow to stop engaging fans at the Green Bay city limits. Social media will play an important role in connecting fans worldwide. “We have fans in over 100 countries. You could be on a social media platform for a women’s club and be talking to someone in Germany who’s just as a loyal a fan as you are, Dow says. “That’s really neat how we can create that community that’s bigger and touches the world.

There’s something so incredibly chic in the crisp combination of menswear details and ultra-feminine pieces, a beautiful and tailored juxtaposition that has inspired many women to borrow from the boys. The feminine tomboy has become an iconic woman, always fabulously put together in blazers and brogues and classically cute in oversized cable sweaters and sneakers. We’re exploring the lovely middle ground where menswear and womenswear meet to create a sense of gravitas, one that draws the eye in admiration.

Meet the Designer Tyler Lambert is a young fashion designer living out his dream right here in Green Bay, creating edgy, comfortable upcycled pieces acquired from thrifting adventures and treasure hunts. Lambert is the owner and designer of Doll House Studio, or DHS for short, a line which he has worked to market via social media and has acquired quite a following. Lambert, a high school senior, says he began his journey into the fashion world at 14 years old, watching his mom sew blankets and fabric coasters and eventually trying it for himself. He credits Teresa Gifford, the owner of the enchanting shop The Assemblage Studio on Pine Street, as being instrumental in his growth as an artist and as a person. He eventually went on to win a fashion contest in Madison, Wisconsin as a 15 year old and in 2014 his DHS clothing collection was added to local boutique, Recycled Denim with a Twist in Ashwaubenon and more recently, Greco Gallery in Sturgeon Bay. Lambert says his brand is influenced by Midwest living, the culture and the weather, and he creates for that trendy individual who knows herself and embraces her uniqueness. Lambert loves bold patterns, large jewelry and chunky sweaters, and thinks a perfect look would include a layered lace dress or funky fur vest. His clothing explores the line between time worn, distressed pieces meshed with a super modern, trendy twist.

Kickin’ date night up a notch Simple ways to spice up your time together by Meghan Diemel

If you’re feeling the date night slump as of late, you’re not alone. It’s easy to fall into a rut, whether you’ve been dating a few months or married for many years. However, it’s still imperative to make the effort, explains Gina Greatens, MS, LMFT, of Fox View Behavioral Health in Green Bay.

“It is important to maintain a sense of connection, that you are ‘in this together,’” says Greatens. “You could think of it as ‘growing apart insurance.’ … The time together does not have to be particularly grand or extravagant, even sharing the routine or mundane will do.” Adam and Katie Meyers of Suamico have been married for three months. When they want to do something out of the ordinary, they keep it simple. “In my opinion, the norm is what we both do on a day-to-day basis, so it’s just fun planning something outside of that,” says Adam, 34. “Whether it’s going out for the night, taking a day trip, or going mountain biking at the Reforestation Camp, which was where our first date was, I think it’s essential to make a point to plan things together.”

want to be.” Sharing and spending time falls under the umbrella of what relationship researcher and expert Dr. John Gottmann refers to as making deposits in your emotional bank account and enhancing your love maps, explains Greatens. “A well-defined love map creates a safe space for the partners to be vulnerable with each other; it fosters a sense of ‘you get me,’” she furthers. Adam says that he and Katie, 31, enjoy good food and appreciate places that take the notion to do things differently. “When I think about a date night, nine times out of 10, it’s going to involve exploring new restaurants,” he says. “That being said, both of us are from a small town, so in general we tend to find ourselves at establishments that don’t fit the profile of a chain. We also tend to frequent different places during different times of the year.” A favorite of the couple is Chives in Suamico. In the past when they’ve wanted to elevate date night, they’ve booked the chef ’s table. “Another place that comes to mind is Chefusion in downtown Green Bay,” Adam adds. “They offer the potential for two different date opportunities. Upstairs is what I would consider more of an upscale lounge with a great wine list – or bourbon list for me – and some of the best small plate food in town. If you are in the mood for more of an upscale, formal date, downstairs in the main dining room is where you will

During the summer, Adam says they’ll also head out to Skaliwag’s in Algoma for something different. He says it’s a nice change of pace with its amazing food and its hopping atmosphere. In the winter, he says he’s heard from several people that ice-skating in downtown Green Bay is also a great time. The effort to enhance date night can also be as easy as a quick and thoughtful text to your loved one, says Greatens. Sending a ‘thinking of you’ text, evoking memories that are pleasant or meaningful, and sending messages of anticipation help build and maintain connection in day-to-day life. “Any loving gesture is a contribution to the emotional bank account and deepens the love maps,” she adds. For any couple feeling disengaged and distant, Greatens encourages them to pursue something brand-new for them and keep it for themselves. This could be anything from embarking on a new hobby, leisure or recreational activity, to participating in community activities, taking a class together or incorporating physical activity. Says Adam, “We are really fortunate to share similar likes for the most part, so when it comes to planning a night out together it comes pretty naturally. However, there are always certain things in a relationship that one person might like doing and the other could go without, and in those instances I think it’s important to compromise. “Take ice skating for example,” he laughs.

Heard on the Street Good news about amazing things happening in our community By Amelia Compton Wolff

Josephine’s Attic celebrates 10 years in business Josephine’s Attic recently celebrated 10 years as a thriving small business in Bellevue. The gift boutique, which carries women’s apparel, gift baskets, gourmet food items and seasonal décor, opened in 2004. Owner Tina Pierquet designs and creates many of the items sold in the store. Pierquet’s unique creations, marketed under the name Josie T. Designs, are a favorite among local customers and have been featured nationally in Haute Handbag magazine. “Customers have responded well to one of my recent creations – handbags made out of men’s ties,” Pierquet says. “Women who have lost loved ones bring in ties and I made special handbags for them out of these ties.” The store is located in a 1950s home Pierquet’s grandfather built for her aunt’s family. “I have many fond memories of playing there as a child,” Pierquet says. “In fact, the same swing is still in the backyard.” The boutique’s name honors both of Pierquet’s grandmothers who shared the name Josephine and were both married to men named Edward. Pierquet recognizes how fortunate she is to be celebrating 10 years in business and looks forward to the future. “It is always a risk opening a small business and leaving a secure job, but we have weathered challenging economic times and continue to thrive,” she says. “I am grateful that I took the leap 10 years ago and opened my business. I love what I do each and every day and will be here to celebrate many more anniversaries to come.” Josephine’s Attic is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Visit: www.jattic.com 30 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | january 2015
