Our nation’s Armed Forces honor our freedom by fighting for it. Now, with the help of Green Bay fan favorite John Kuhn, we are honoring their sacrifice by learning what it was like for them as they served thousands of miles from home in letters they wrote to their loved ones. Each week through Veteran’s Day, letters like this one will show the struggles of everyday Americans who were called to nobly defend their country. These letters are from veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam or the Middle East during wartime. Join us in reading their stories, and in celebrating their heroism, all in a show of thanks for the independence they provide. Page two of this letter will be continued, Sunday, November 13th. August 11, 1941 Camp Livingston, Louisiana
Dear Folks, Dont’ get sore at the length of this letter or the writing. I’m kinda like Lincoln. I’m writing this while I am in my pup tent and a candle for light. Yo see we are on maneuvers and I don’t know just how lonu g they will last, maybe a few weeks. Boy is it hot. The ground is so hot you could bake potatoes in it if you buried them in it. And under th e sun, well, I’d rather not talk about that. We are over 100 miles from Camp Livingston. I don’t know just where. We must live in these small tents until after the maneuvers. After they are over we don’t know just where we are going. But I’m almo sure of a leave in Sept. or Oct. for 15 days, so that’sst something to look forward to. And when I get it, wil lI have myself a time, and how! Maybe if I’m a good boy I’ll be able to save a little money now that I get $36.00 a month instead of $21.0 Well lots of Love to Mother, Pop and the rest. 0. Take good care of yourselves and I’ll do the same. Once again, please excuse the writing and everything else in this letter. Will write again as often as I can. If anyone else asks why I don’t write, tell them I havent’ the time. Love, Jr. Private First Class in the United States Army
