Andy and Alyssa Bibby, with their son, Owyn, and daughter, Lyla, chose to have a January beachside wedding in Mexico and a March reception in Manitowoc with family and friends.

From the get-go, Andy and Alyssa Bibby dreamed of a small destination wedding, but also wanted to find a way for all of their friends and family to enjoy their special day.
And they wanted to wait until Lyla was old enough to travel before they chose their destination. “As soon as we found out I was pregnant, we decided to include our kids in the wedding,” Alyssa said. “It’s such a rare opportunity, most Twenty-four friends and family members joined Andy and Alyssa Bibby kids don’t get to have for their beachside wedding in Mexico. The travel agent recommended resorts with wedding packages, which Andy and Alyssa liked because everything was planned out, relieving a lot of the stress and pressure. “The most stressful part was packing,” Alyssa said. “I didn’t even see the aisle until I walked down it, but it was breathtaking. Everything was so beautiful.” On their wedding day, their kids played big roles in the ceremony. Owyn was the best man and Lyla was the maid of honor. Both kids received gifts to remember the special day — a pocket watch with “Dad’s Best Man” engraved on it for Owyn and a necklace with a crab and a pearl on it for Lyla. Twenty-four people accompanied the couple on their wedding day, but much of their family was unable to come, including Andy’s parents. They initially planned to have a reception in their back yard after they returned home, but eventually

leaned toward something more formal. “I got to wear my dress more than once,” Alyssa said. “That made it so worth it.” Knox’s Silver Valley Bar and Banquet Hall, 1222 S. Alverno Road in Manitowoc, was the first and only place they toured. The staff was one of the biggest inf luences on their decision, the couple said. Silver Valley is family owned and operated by Jerry and Debbie Knox. Their sister-in-law, Julie Jeske, is manager and oversees wedding planning. Alyssa advised that couples should try to be laidback and avoid being rigid in their decision-making. “Planning the reception was the easy part, especially working with Silver Valley,” Alyssa said. “Julie knows what she’s doing, so we let her have fun with it.” wedding continued on page 10 >>>

Looking back, Alyssa recommends couples reserve extra time for collecting RSVPs, noting that their guest list grew when people returned them late. Their guest list started at 80 and ended up closer to 150 people. Throughout the entire process the staff at Silver Valley was very accommodating, Alyssa added. Even when tragedy struck on the day of the reception, Jerry and his team supported the couple and made sure the reception was the last thing they had to worry about. While taking photos with their parents, Andy’s father collapsed and was taken away in an ambulance. Andy, his mother and his sister accompanied him to the hospital and waited for his vitals to stabilize before returning to the reception. Andy’s father recovered and is doing well. When they returned to the reception, everything was under control. “They took care of everything,” Andy said. “They postponed dinner for us and kept everyone’s food hot. It turned out better than we ever could have imagined.” wedding continued on page 12 >>>

Questions couples should ask? Julie Jeske with Knox’s Silver Valley suggested couples remember to ask these questions when booking a location for your wedding or reception? • What are the different options for food? Is there vegan, gluten-free, food allergy alternatives? • Will there be any other events going on that day? • Is there an outdoor option for the ceremony or reception? What is the landscaping like? What happens if there’s inclement weather?
• What will the layout look like on the day of? Is it handicappedaccessible? • How close is the facility to hotels? Do they offer transportation to and from the reception hall? • What can they do to go above and beyond to make the day special? Is there a projector for a photo slideshow? Do they have a photo booth? Can the lighting be adjusted? What options do they have in terms of décor? Can they provide it? ●

Preparing for the big day means planning a multitude of details; everything from the flower arrangements to that something blue must be decided upon well in advance of the ceremony. Here are some tips to help ensure your big day goes off without a hitch.
The Big Decisions The decision to get married is the first of many big decisions you will be making in the weeks and months to come. Here are some things to consider right away:
Pick a date. Talk with your fiancé and family (and your fiancé’s family) about potential wedding dates to ensure the important people in both your lives will be able to take part. Select your guests. The number of guests you invite will directly inf luence the cost of your wedding. Set a budget. Budgeting for your wedding is crucial, as this will have a great impact on every other aspect of your day, as well as your honeymoon. Plan for a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses. Choose a location. Because most popular bridal spots are just that — popular —
you may want to start searching for a location quickly. Organize the bridal party. Make careful decisions about who you want supporting you leading up to the big day, and who will be displayed in front of everyone in your life. Pick a style. Many brides choose wedding styles that are ref lected in their save-the-dates, invitations, ceremonies, receptions and thank-you cards. Choosing a theme and color scheme in the beginning will help narrow down options later. Hire a caterer. Take into account the dietary needs of your guests by offering a variety of menu options, including a vegetarian dish. Order the cake. Whether you choose a large multitiered cake or cupcakes, remember to keep your budget in mind—and pick f lavors you and your fiancé truly enjoy.

Make the announcement. Decide how you want to let the community know of your planned nuptials. Do you want to take professional engagement photos? Do you plan to contact your local paper? Will you include a link to a wedding day website on your save-thedate or your wedding invitations? Get the gown. On your wedding day, everyone will be awaiting a glimpse of your gown. Listen to your instincts and choose a gown that “feels right” and ref lects your personality and style. Dress your party. Once you have chosen the wedding dress of your dreams, speak with your fiancé about
his wishes for his suit, as well as the bridal party attire. Hire a photographer. Choose your professional photographer wisely. With a walk down the aisle, father/ daughter dance and toast, your father is sure to get photographed, but your mother might get overlooked. Make sure to ask the photographer to get shots of your mother throughout the day as well. Choose your flowers. Once you set the date, discuss with your f lorists which f lowers are in season to help Planning continued on page 18 >>>

narrow down your selection. You may love tulips, but if you have a winter wedding, they may be hard to come by, and may be more expensive.
Practice reciting your vows and speeches until you feel comfortable.
Book the entertainment. Do you want a DJ or a live band? Talk with your fiancé about your music preferences, as well as the types of tunes you want played at your reception to keep your guests on the dance f loor.
Remember to ask for help. Designate members of your family or close friends to specific assignments.
Before the Big Day Create a website for your wedding to keep guests informed of events and for easy access to registry information. Provide accommodation information for those guests traveling from out of town. Insure your engagement and wedding rings against loss, damage, theft or mysterious disappearance. According to a survey conducted by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, 44 percent of married women either don’t insure their engagement ring, or don’t know for certain whether their engagement and wedding rings are insured. license, travel documentation and insurance information are ready to go and stored in a safe place in advance of the wedding day.
Wear your wedding heels around the house to “break them in.” Pack a backup pair of f lats to wear during the reception.
Wedding Day Details Provide bottled water for your wedding party. To ensure no one gets over-heated, hide water near your bridal party during the ceremony for emergencies. Choose meaningful gifts for your wedding party. Necklaces, earrings or bracelets are great for bridesmaids; cuff links are perfect for groomsmen. Create individual envelopes for tipping drivers, caterers, musicians, etc. Separate envelopes will help ensure you don’t forget anyone.
Plan for weather In case of rain — Order a tent or choose a venue with indoor space for last-minute protection from the elements. Offer extra umbrellas to usher people from their vehicles to the venue. In case of heat — Place fans throughout the venue and provide plenty of water for guests. In case of cold — Space heaters can be placed throughout the space to warm up the room in advance of the event. ●

Brides show short wedding gowns more of the love
H
By LEANNE ITALIE, Associated Press
Helen Bradley isn’t one of those women who fantasized about her wedding as a girl, so when the time came to tie the knot on the 10th tee of a golf course, she wanted to be relaxed, comfortable and economical.
<<< In this image released by David’s Bridal, a model wears a strapless dress with a satin sash from the White by Vera collection. At David’s Bridal, 26 of the 75 gowns launched for spring 2015 are short, said Anne Acierno, executive vice president for design, merchandising and product development. (AP Photo/David’s Bridal)
A short gown was just right for her September nuptials, said the 27-year-old bank worker in Madison, Wisconsin. “I had tried on a few long dresses and none of them felt like me. I’m a very practical person. My mom picked out the short dress from a sale rack and it’s rare that I would like anything that my mom picks out,” she said with a laugh. Once the domain of older or remarrying brides, short gowns are enjoying a little more of the love, from luxury brands like Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa to more affordable offerings at David’s Bridal, which has a bustling retail website and about 300 stores around the country. The short looks aren’t just stand-in dresses originally intended for bridesmaids or cocktail parties. Designers are offering a greater range of shorter styles as more brides break from tradition and personalize their weddings. “A lot of people are doing more intimate settings, so a shorter dress just feels more appropriate. If they do the big wedding, some change into a shorter dress so they can dance and have a good time,” Lhuillier said. DRESS continued on page 24 >>>

“Her huge train came off to become a mini and she took it off to Judy Garland’s ‘Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart,’” he said. “It covered the grandeur of the ceremony and the fun of the party.” Long gowns remain the clear majority of the $2.6 billion-a-year bridal gown market, noted Darcy Miller, editorial director for Martha Stewart’s bridal site, Marthastewartweddings.com. But “more and more brides seem to be seeking no-fuss, lightweight and easier silhouettes,” she said. Some “want a dress they can run on the beach in or travel with to their destination wedding.” In this Oct. 12, 2013 photo released by Stephanie Chaney Casanova shows her wearing a BHLDN short dress from Anthropologie’s bridal line at her wedding to Juan Pablo Cortazar Casanova in Lincoln Park in Chicago. Exactly how short is up to the bride. There are minis, high-low hemlines (high in the front and lower in the back), knee lengths, tea lengths below the knee and so-called “transformers,” where a long train or sheer skirt detaches to show off a short dress underneath. Designer Zac Posen put his own sister in one of the convertibles — in red — for her 2004 wedding.
At David’s Bridal, 26 of the 75 gowns launched for spring 2015 are short, said Anne Acierno, executive vice president for design, merchandising and product development. Posen creates luxury short looks but also includes a few in his Truly Zac Posen collection at David’s Bridal. He said red-carpet trends inf luence some brides, and these days they’re seeing more short, fancy dresses. Among high-profile brides to go short recently were fashion “it” girl Olivia Palermo and actress Cheryl Hines, who married Robert F. Kennedy Jr. last August in a strapless, white, tea-length creation by Romona Keveza. Vera Wang makes short gowns too, in a range of pricepoints that include her White collection for David’s Bridal. “I think you should wear what you feel most beautiful and most comfortable in, and also what is most you, most individual,” Wang said. Shorter dresses can be less expensive — a huge factor for Bradley at her country club wedding before 125 guests. The reception was in a cozy room with a big fireplace, wood floors and sconces all around. Her dress cost $400. She spent another $100 on a chunky glass statement necklace with matching earrings, and $99 for a pair of 4-inch Calvin Klein heels in dusty gold with a T-strap and side buckle.
left much of the fabric unusable. She regrouped, found another seamstress and was able to salvage some of the original fabric for the bodice of a new gown, inspired by the strapless, full, Vivienne Westwood design that “Sex in the City” character Carrie Bradshaw wore when Mr. Big jilted her at the altar in the first movie based on the TV series. Unlike Bradley out on the golf course, Mitchell wore her short gown for a church ceremony.
“Everyone asked me, ‘Aren’t you This May 3, 2013 photo released by Dale Janee worried about the Schroeter shows her wearing a vintage dress on church? Emmy Mitchell, 33, of Columbus, Ohio, wore custom when she went short for her 2011 wedding. She had originally planned to modify the 75-year-old, long, ivory satin gown worn by her mother and grandmother, but a mishap with a seamstress
Mitchell’s advice for others who want to go short? “Go with your gut. Just go for it. It was the best decision of our wedding. It made everyone loosen their collars and say, ‘OK, this is a fun event. We can all cut loose tonight.’” Follow Leanne Italie on Twitter at twitter.com/litalie

Got kids? Make your wedding a family affair By SARAH WOLFE, Associated Press
2 8 | l ak eshore wedding pl anner | 2 015
When Angelina Jolie wed Brad Pitt in one of the most publicized nuptials of the 21st century, she wore a jaw-dropping silk and satin gown designed by Donatella Versace. Embroidered on her f loor-length veil were colorful drawings by the couple’s six children. One even read “Buttock Fatock.” Eldest sons Maddox and Pax walked Jolie down the aisle, daughters Zahara and Vivienne tossed f lower petals, and daughter Shiloh and son Knox were ring-bearers. Pax baked the wedding cake. It all sounds very Hollywood. But it’s not just Brangelina. Many brides and grooms have children from previous relationships, and are going beyond the traditional to find ways to incorporate them into their weddings. Yes, the kids add cuteness. But it’s often more about blending families.
In this Nov. 1, 2013 photo provided by Courtesy of The Pros, wedding planner Amanda Morris incorporated the 4-year-old daughter of a Chicago-area couple into their wedding a variety of ways. Here, a special flower girl box reads “Daddy here comes Mommy.” (AP Photo/Courtesy of The Pros)

from Wheeler after he proposed to their mother. “I let them know I was committing to be there as a parent and to raise them as my own,” he says. Like Jolie and Pitt’s brood, many children take part in the ceremony as f lower girls, ring bearers and readers, while others walk their mother down the aisle.

Their 4-year-old daughter loves them, and wanted to make her a priority in their nuptials, wedding planner Amanda Morris says. (AP Photo/Courtesy of The Pros) <<< family continued from page 29
Children also can help light a “unity candle” or participate in what’s become known as a “sand ceremony,” in which the bride, groom and children pour different-colored sand into a container to symbolize a new union. San Francisco physician Kyra Bobinet and her fiancé, Josh Leichter, designed wedding bands with a diamond for each of their four children.
“The need to create a family bond early is vital to stepparents’ success,” says Stacey James Wheeler, a California-based family dynamics researcher and author, whose wife had two daughters when they married more than 12 years ago. “Involving the children in our marriage was a great way to do that.”
“Our kids will be our only bridesmaids and groomsmen, setting them apart as special attendants to the wedding,” Bobinet says. “We’re inviting them to offer words of support for our partnership, so it gives them a voice and a choice in the matter.”

In this Nov. 1, 2013 photo provided by Courtesy of The Pros, wedding planner Amanda Morris incorporated the 4-year-old daughter of a Chicago-area couple into their wedding a variety of ways. One was this semi-sweetheart table, in which the little girl sat between her mother and father during the reception. Signs reading “I’m hers,” “I’m theirs” and “I’m his” decorated the chair backs. dy Sloane and her husband, Bob Czworka, danced down the aisle with their four children to the song “Love is Strange.” All four kids stood with them under the Jewish chupah, or canopy, during their ceremony in Sunrise, Florida, and at the reception sang a song written by two of them. “I gave my daughter and two ‘bonus daughters’ necklaces that said ‘daughter,’ and my son a commemorative keepsake box,” Sloane says. Chicago-area event planner Amanda Morris created a semi-sweetheart table for a newly married couple and their 4-year-old daughter. The little girl sat between her mom and dad at the reception, and each sat in a chair with signs that read, “I’m his,” ‘’I’m hers” or “I’m theirs.” Morris also created a “favorite things” station instead of a traditional dessert
table. “What was cute is that it even had items like mini Heinz ketchup packets and Starbucks pink cake pops because their daughter loved both,” she says. Cupcake stations are another kidfriendly dessert idea. The children of the bride and groom can play “host” and help other kids decorate cupcakes during the reception. And then there’s the first dance. Not between bride and groom, but between each of them and their children and/or stepchildren. “Make sure to bring the tissues,” says wedding planner Stephany Allongo in Palm Beach, Florida. “This is usually a tearjerker.” Online: Amanda Morris: www.c1revolution.com Stephany Allongo: www.themajesticvision.com
