Lakeshore area businesses impact state and beyond

BY CHARLIE MATHEWS | HERALD TIMES REPORTER From cranes in China to luxury megayachts in the Mediterranean to Blue Moon ice cream at Milwaukee’s Summerfest, the variety of products made in Manitowoc County is phenomenal.

were formed shortly before the beginning of the 21st century. There is no doubt the reputation for excellence of these Manitowoc County brands will continue to grow.

almost all of Orion Energy Systems’ 230 employees now call Manitowoc home, with the company’s corporate headquarters and Technology Center on the city’s northeast side.

The population of 83,000 people seems to be matched by the number of innovative or trend-setting — or simply delicious — items manufactured, baked or invented in the Lakeshore area.

Orion Energy Systems

The business model is basic — twice the light at half the price, using its patented energy-efficient light fixtures.

Companies like the Manitowoc Company and Burger Boat have roots going back a century.

The most distinguished visitor ever to a Lakeshore area manufacturer was President Barack Obama who paid a January 2011 visit to Orion Energy Systems, which he praised as a “green” business on the forefront of energy savings through high-tech innovations. It was the first visit to Manitowoc County by a sitting U.S. President and Obama also visited Broadwind Towers and Skana Aluminum.

lights on and off, control temperature, and work with motion sensors to reduce lighting when people aren’t working in a sector of a facility. Its Apollo Light Pipes use the cheapest form of direct renewable energy available around the world — the sun. The Apollo’s collector dome “harvests” sunlight and, using multiple prisms, diffuses the light into a building’s interior. If a customer looks up, the light pipe looks like any other large, round, bright light fixture.

The Manitowoc Company

With sales of approximately $3.14 billion in 2010, the Manitowoc Company is the largest business in Manitowoc County, with shares available to the public through the New York Stock Exchange. Its stock ticker symbol is “MTW.” In New York City after Sept. 11, Manitowoc cranes were used to help clear the devastation following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center twin towers. Manitowoc Cranes are plentiful in Lower Manhattan now on a variety of rebuilding projects. The heritage of Manitowoc Cranes dates to 1925, when the company built its first lattice boom crawler cranes in Manitowoc. Its largest model ever, the 31000, has a base cost of some $30 million and is capable of lifting nearly 2,500 tons.

The company’s trademark red machines can be found in every corner of the globe. Manitowoc Cranes can be found at construction sites in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Cranes with 30 or more years of service can still be found at work, and the company’s exceptional after-sale support make them popular with fleet owners. More Manitowoc Company cranes are in operation throughout the United States than cranes made by any other manufacturer. Manitowoc Ice and its snowflake logo are on thousands of ice-making machines in restaurants and hotels around the world. It is America’s No. 1 selling brand of ice machine. It is a member of the Manitowoc Foodservice Group, with a 360,000-square-foot manufacturing plant on the city’s south side. The Foodservice Group is a national leader in beverage dispensers and walk-in refrigerators, as well as a variety of “hot” catering equipment with 35 market-leading brands.

Pine River

Since 1963 Pine River has ranked atop the industry, winning awards for quality and excellence with its cheese products and chocolates. It continues to win awards at the World Championship Cheese Contest, World Dairy Expo, Wisconsin State Fair and other competitions for its cheese spreads and chocolate creations.

Now, 121 years later, the Burger Boat shipyard on Spring Street is the creation site for what one Travel TV program called “The Rolls-Royce of American yachts.”

Snack spread contains more moisture, but less fat and calories and can be served as a spread or a dip or warmed to create a sauce.

Burger Boat has expanded its client base to include discriminating luxury mega-yacht owners from throughout the world, not just the United States.

Pine River makes two types of cheese spread: cold pack and snack spread. Cold pack is made by blending cuts of grade natural cheddar with cream and other dairy ingredients. Herbs, spices or nuts are added to create its award-winning flavors including garlic and herb, port wine, French onion, and Swiss and almond.

All Kahlenberg horns are certified sound signals designed for durability in the most adverse conditions wherever employed around the globe. In response to expected declines in worldwide yacht construction, Kahlenberg has expanded its market share of signals sold for mass notification warning purposes at facilities located in the United States and abroad. Kahlenberg began manufacturing marine propellers at the turn of the 20th century. The experience gained in the design and manufacture of propellers during the past century-plus is a priceless heritage passed on to its customers in the form of better propellers, correctly designed for superior strength and performance.

Natural Ovens Bakery

Paul Stitt founded Natural Ovens Bakery in 1976 in Manitowoc because he saw a need for fresh, satisfying bread. While the business was sold to Alpha Baking Co. in Chicago, nearly four decades later, Natural Ovens provides the same quality ingredients not just to bread, but also to bagels, buns, muffins, cookies, granola bars and cereals. Grocery stores throughout the Midwest carry “Healthy Beginnings” bread varieties, “Brainy Bagels,” and “Mixed Fruit Great Granola Bars,” including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland. A recent construction project added to Natural Ovens’ spiral cooler building, doubling the bakery’s capacity. Its 160-plus employees say they strive to improve customers’ health one loaf at a time with production and distribution activities six days a week on three shifts with the only break from Friday night until Saturday noon.

The performing arts have a long history in the area

Theaters Capitol Civic Centre

MANITOWOC — The Capitol Civic Centre in downtown Manitowoc bills itself as “the jewel of the lakeshore.” There’s good reason for that. The community restored the 1920s theater to its original luster — complete with sparkling chandeliers — and reopened it in 1987 with a theatrical flourish. The Capitol, 913 S. Eighth St., has since been a showcase for music, dance, comedy and drama. It celebrates its 25th season. The Capitol’s 2011-12 Baileigh Industrial Marquee Series kicks off with classic pop band Air Supply on Sept. 24, contuse with “An Evening with Liz Callaway,” Broadway singer htrnews.com | 2011-2012

New this year is the Family Series featuring local talent in Disney’s “My Son Pinocchio” on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1-2; “The Chipper Experience!” comedy-magic show on Nov. 12; The Cashore Marionettes in “Life in Motion” on Jan. 28; Theatreworks USA presenting “Charlotte’s Web” on April 21. Local groups — The Masquers Inc., the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, Lakeshore Wind Ensemble, Peter Quince Performing Company, Clipper City Chordsmen, Jean

Wolfmeyer Dance Studio and Kaleidoscope Dance Studio, to name a few — also bring performances to its stage. The theater offers a variety of diverse opportunities, including the Capitol Arts Academy, an educational program with a focus on performing arts for youth. The Masquers

The Masquers Inc., which lays claim to being the oldest continuously operating community theater group in Wisconsin, is entering its 81st year of staging shows in the Manitowoc area. The group purchased the Coach House, 616 N. Eighth St., Manitowoc, in 1944 and remodeled it to provide a place for meetings, rehearsals and building sets. Performances are at the Capitol Civic Centre, Manitowoc. Shows for the 2011-12 season are “A Christmas Story” on Nov. 17-19; “Play It Again Sam” on March 1-3; “The Sound of Music” on May 1012. President Luan Leonardelli can be reached at (920) 629-6291. The group’s website is www. masquers.info and its e-mail is masquers. info@gmail.com. Manitowoc At the heart of Manitowoc’s art community is the Rahr-West Art Museum, 610 N. Eighth St. Its stately Victorian mansion is a work of art in itself. Once home to one of Manitowoc’s pioneer families, it was built between 1891 and 1893 and now is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Decked out in period style, the mansion offers a blend of art, architecture and history all rolled into one. A modern exhibition wing was added in 1975 24

Something for everyone

BY JEFF SEILER | HERALD TIMES REPORTER For generations, Manitowoc County has offered so much to its residents by way of recreational opportunities, throughout the year. Water, of course, abounds. Starting with Lake Michigan, but certainly not limited to that, a wide variety of recreational opportunities exist, including boating, swimming and fishing on or in the biggest one, as well as the other 15 named lakes in the county and its four rivers. Spending time at any of the numerous beaches is always fun, whether in or out of the water. Every year, most recently in June, Two Rivers holds its annual Carp Fest, along with the Two Rivers Kiwanis Fish Derby in July. The Manitowoc marina also hosts the Northeastern Wisconsin Salmon Derby every July; offering more than $30,000 in prizes, it is now in its 35th year. Both cities also offer multiple charter fishing trips for just about any kind of catch desired. There are many good golf courses in the area, for just about any level of challenge. Mishicot can rightfully boast of The National Course at Fox Hills Resort, a Scottish links-styled course, which was named the 2007 Resort Course of the Year by the Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin. Less traditional American-style 18-hole courses include Meadow Links in Manitowoc, Wander Springs in Greenleaf and the Fox Creek courses at Fox Hills. Par-3 courses may be found at Seven Lakes in Valders and Eastwin
