Thoughts on our 6th Decade Sixty-five years after our founding, we continue to evolve. Challenging health care demands have been met with the addition of private rooms, suites and apartments, satellite kitchens and meaningful activities for residents. We have partnered with HFM Rehab Services as a provider of therapy at our facility and an onsite HFM Clinic. As a not-for-profit organization, we are committed to proving quality at a reasonable cost.

As the Baby boom begins turning 65, we enter our own sixth decade and, like most who reach a new mile stone, look back to contemplate where we have been. Aging well means being adaptive to new challenges and applying the wisdom gained over the years. And, in considering where we have been, we also take a greater interest in our future. In 1951, Local attorney Fred G. Dicke saw a meed for a communityrun retirement home along with a remarkable opportunity when the county built a new health care center vacating the old county mental hospital. With a group of community leaders, he formed a local board under the name Shady Lane, Inc. and converted the former hospital into a retirement home. By 1971, changes in health care trends and technology made it clear that the old building was no longer suitable. It was razed and in its place a new four-story building, now home to Shady Lane Nursing Care Center was constructed. Finally in 1993, Shady Lane purchased the entire complex with its extensive, manicured grounds from the county and added Laurel Grove Assisted Living along with the gardens.

Manitowoc’s only not-for-profit citizen directed care facility.

Today, our board of directors continues to be comprised of local leaders to whom we are ever grateful for their leadership, love of our community, and especially their vision. They listen to the community, understand the needs an take action to meet them.

S

ince opening in 1997, patient-centered quality care has always been foremost in the delivery of services provided by Lakeshore Chiropractic. Ownerchiropractor Christopher J. Simons delivers compassionate care and extraordinary service for all ages and musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractic care is a popular alternative for conditions not easily treated by traditional medicine and for those who prefer a natural, drug-free treatment regimen.

The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy 1500 Washington Street, Two Rivers

794-1225

www.medicineshoppe.com/1564 Owners: Marv and Joylyn Moore

While conventional adjustments are still a large part of what Lakeshore Chiropractic offers, recent advances in technology and techniques have allowed the practice to bring care to an even higher level. Cold laser, Cox decompression, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, exercise prescription, orthotic evaluation/fitting, postural alteration, and IASTM are some of the more innovative, noninvasive approaches used.

Do you think that quality pharmacy care is just prompt prescriptions? The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Two Rivers believes that is just the beginning, and offers the personal attention and services that go well beyond. The Medicine Shoppe is the only locally-owned pharmacy in Two Rivers, with roots dating to 1992. Owners Marvin and Joylyn Moore are both pharmacists, and their 25-member staff, including two additional pharmacists plus a pharmacy resident, offers a great number and variety of services designed to meet the individual needs of their patients. These include options for bubble packing of medications, automatic refill program, home delivery and mailing, cholesterol and blood glucose levels testing, complimentary blood pressure readings and analysis with a pharmacist, various vaccinations, and diabetic shoe fittings. Marv assures, “If you have a unique medication-related need, we will make every effort to help you.” A notable recent accolade for The Medicine Shoppe is its accreditation by the Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation, one of the first three pharmacies in the country to earn this designation. According to CPPA Executive Director Lynnae Mahaney, “The Medicine Shoppe is a wonderful example of the diverse patient care services that innovative community pharmacy practice are offering today.” Marv’s response was, “For years we have been committed to providing the best possible care to our patients. This accreditation validates that we are on the right track and that we have a process in place that ensures quality and safety for our patients.” As a locally owned business, The Medicine Shoppe also believes in giving back to the community. The pharmacy and various staff are proud members of the Two Rivers Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club of Two Rivers, Two Rivers Main Street, and Two Rivers Business Association.

IASTM, in particular, has shown outstanding results for Lakeshore Chiropractic patients. Short for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation, IASTM treats conditions including epicondylitis, Achilles tendinitis, ITB syndrome, rotator cuff tendinitis, and plantar fasciitis. Benefits to patients include increased satisfaction, better outcomes in a shorter time span, costeffectiveness, quicker return to work and/or athletics, and improved edema control. For more information, check out our website: www.lakeshorechiropractictworivers.com. This website interactively helps patients learn about pain they may be having, explore treatment options, and link to supplemental information to help make informed health choices. Dr. Simons is also certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (A.V.C.A.) for animal chiropractic with special interest in equine and canine.

Compassionate care. Extraordinary service.

Good for Life

We Make Water

You don’t have to live with problem water! MANITOWOC, WI -When you think of the many ways water is a part of our lives, it’s truly amazing. From drinking it, bathing, to cooking and doing laundry, it's definitely something we can't do without. Yet people tend to take this commodity for granted, many living with water that is hard, rusty or contaminated. “Hard water occurs when your water system contains more minerals, such as calcium and magnesium then ordinary water. “Determining if you have problem water is easy”, states Sepnafski. “You’ll be able to notice tell-tale signs, such as a bad taste or smells to the water, cloudiness, sediment, or an orange color. It can effect other areas of your life, too, causing dry skin, spotted dishes or dingy laundry. Or you may notice rusty water stains or scaly pipes.” Companies such as WaterCare also offer free in-home water analysis - a simple test to determine the hardness of water and if it contains any contaminants. And if you do have water problems, there are several options available to alleviate them.

• Water Softener • Iron Filter • Bottle Water • Reverse Osmosis (R/O) Water Filter Whichever option you choose, once you take care of your water problem the difference will be noticeable. “Your water will taste better, your skin will feel better, your dishes will be cleaner, your laundry ill be whiter and brighter. You’ll notice a difference in all aspects of everyday living related to water!” says Sepnafski. But the first step towards resolution is to have your water tested to evaluate your exact needs. Let a water expert measure the hardness, iron, nitrates, sulfates, tannin and TDS levels in your water, as well as the size of your household; to determine the best type of equipment necessary for remedying your water problems.

Drinking plenty of water makes you look and feel healthier. Make sure the water your family drinks is healthy, too.

Heritage House Furniture has been in the Mishicot, Two Rivers area since 2013, but our experience in handcrafted furniture goes back many years. We also offer beautiful handmade quilts and various home décor items. Our plans for 2016 include opening a woodworking shop here at the showroom. We believe we can improve our customer service if some of the furniture production can be done right here.

BEST CHILI

The Dugout Bar & Grill

2205 Forest Ave. Suite 200 Two Rivers, WI 54241

The Dugout has always been the type of place that has a local feel, but is welcoming to anyone. Over a bowl of spicy chili or an ice cold beer you will feel welcomed by the friendly staff and owner Jim Bialek, whose family opened the bar when he was just 5 years old. The Dugout Bar & Grill was opened by his late parents Jim Sr. and Nancy (Lee) Bialek, and has always been a family run business.

Owner/Brokers Donna Petska and JoAnne Kouba celebrate 11 years in business growing from 6 to 16 agents over those 11 years. Our office is located in Two Rivers but our agents live and work throughout Manitowoc County providing sellers and buyers with fast, friendly knowledgeable service. We have stayed on the cutting edge of technology, with the growing use of smart phones we provide QR codes with all of our listings for instant information on homes for sale. In addition we prove a text number for each listing where you can receive information on a home for sale right on the spot. Visit our user friendly website, where buyers and sellers have access not only to all of our listings, but any listing throughout Wisconsin.

Independently Owned and Operated

The term Dugout doesn’t just conjure up images of baseball for many local residents. It also brings up images of a local establishment that has been around since 1975. Moving from downtown in the late ’70s and surviving a fire in 1990, the Dugout Bar & Grill may have changed locations and looks over the years, but its values remain the same. If the Dugout had a motto, it would be “great food and drinks at fair price”.

Weichert, Realtors CornerStone will always work to exceed our customers and clients expectations.

The Dugout is known for its amazing Friday Fish Fry. Offering Perch, Pike, Bluegill and Cod, it has something to please every fish lover. The Dugout also serves a homemade spicy chili sure to warm you up on a cold day, and half pound steak sandwiches for anyone with a hearty appetite. Look for daily specials such as Paddles and Smelt on Mondays, Chef’s Choice on Tuesdays and Fried Chicken on Wednesdays. The Dugout also serves Breakfast on Sundays from 7-10am.

What started out in a garage in 1993, has now become a company who specializes in some of the finest home and commercial fitness equipment and bicycles.

Serious Equipment for Serious Fitness

After working at Wolf Schwinn Cyclery for 16 years, John Brunner moved on to form The Fitness Store in his garage, specializing in commercial fitness equipment sales and service. Within a year, John and his father Clarence, opened a small retail store in downtown Manitowoc. Since John had spent so many years in the bicycle business, the father and son team took on a few bicycle lines and quickly outgrew their downtown location. With an opening in Edgewater Plaza, The Fitness Store found it’s new home in what had formerly been the Brooks Clothing Store. Taking on more staff, sales continued to grow in both fitness and bikes. Soon the company felt as if it was time to purchase a building to call their own so they purchased the S 10th St building which formerly housed Small Engine Service. in 2005, The Fitness Store again felt the need to get into a larger space. A visit by one of it’s customer who operated The Club on Dewey St in Manitowoc came at the right time. After being told that The Club was closing, The Fitness Store soon purchased the building it’s in to this date. With commercial customers as far north as Door County and the Green Bay area, west to the Valley area and south as far south as Milwaukee, The Fitness Store is truly a regional supplier of some of the finest equipment available, backed by fast and reliable service. As they like to say, “Serious Equipment for Serious Fitness”.

Let Quality Aire, Inc.

keep your air clean!

Welcome to Quality Aire, Inc. the area leader for indoor air quality. We offer air duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning services to Manitowoc and Sheboygan Counties. Dirty air ducts and dryer vents can pose serious health and fire hazards, as well as substantially impact energy efficiency. Left neglected, air duct build-up circulates more dust, pollen, animal hair, microbes and other contaminants into breathable air inside. Likewise, dryer vent build-up reduces air flow, causes overheating, and is a common cause of fires. These conditions can strain your furnace and dryer vent systems, causing them to work harder and lose energy efficiency. We live in a world where healthy living has become a way of life. We diet and exercise to make ourselves feel better. Yet the most overlooked issue is the air that we breathe. The Environmental Protection Agency claims that indoor air has been found to be more polluted than outdoor air. Now consider on an average people spend 90% of their time indoors……The facts can be quite alarming.

Before you choose a builder, look for this sign. Bruce and Gail Wegner own and operate Frank Check Builders, which was started in 1966 by Gail’s parent’s Frank and Joyce Check. Bruce joined the company in 1978 learning from Frank and his experience along the way. In March 1993, Frank and Joyce retired and Bruce and Gail became the owners of the company. Today, quality craftsmanship and complete customer satisfaction remain as important to Bruce as they did in 1966 when Frank started the business. Bruce works with every customer using decades of experience to design the perfect home or remodel for each customer that exactly fits their wants and needs while making the process enjoyable. He then builds that home or remodel to his own high expectations where quality is always number 1. We pride ourselves in putting the same quality into every home and remodeling project, from the smallest to the largest. Every customer is important to us. We strive to make the building or remodeling of a home one of the most exciting and enjoyable times in our customer’s lives. Bruce feels every homeowner deserves this.

show your home some By jamie zastrow

Executive Officer, Manitowoc County Home Builders Association

Your home puts up with a lot. It withstands inclement weather, endures the occasional stained carpet, clogged drain or broken window, and it even tolerates the smell of your burnt popcorn. So it deserves a little love once in a while, and there’s no better time to show it than the month of February. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on new appliances or significant renovations to show your home that you care. There are many simple ways to show your home some love. Here are a few suggestions. Shed Some of that Extra Weight Do you really need to hold on to all of those 1980s leisure suits you’d hoped would come back in style? You don’t have to wait for spring to roll around to get rid of the junk that may be piling up in your coat closets, basement or garage. Lighten the load throughout your home and it will seem bigger and significantly cleaner. Plus, spring cleaning won’t be nearly as intimidating when that time comes. Get Some Sun Winter doesn’t have to be dreary. Sure, the trees may be bare, but that just means less foliage is blocking the sun. Do your home and yourself a favor and let the sunlight in. Pull back (or take down) the drapes, wash the windows, and maybe even swap out dark lampshades for brighter ones to make the inside of your home cheerier. Scrub it Down Your appliances work hard for you every day so it’s time to give them a thorough cleaning, especially if you haven’t done so recently.

Refrigerators especially need a little extra attention on a regular basis. Start by taking everything out, then, be selective about what you put back. Also, check to see if any of your appliances might still be under warranty with a service plan to cover any maintenance that will keep them running smoothly.

Spruce it Up One of the most economical updates you can give your home is paint. Whether it’s a bold new color, or just a fresh coat, painting a room or even just an accent wall can breathe new life into any space. Winter months can sometimes limit interior painting opportunities if it’s consistently too cold outside to open windows for ventilation. Plan ahead by checking the weather reports to find a day that might work. Buy a Bouquet If you’re not doing any gardening on the outside of your home during this time of year, bring some flowers inside. A blooming bouquet instantly warms up a room during cold winter months. Check out the flower section of your local grocery store to find festive flowers at reasonable prices. protect your roof

and it will keep protecting you

A home is the biggest investment most people will ever make, which is why home owners often go to great lengths to protect that investment. But one of the more important components of safeguarding a home is also one of the most often ignored: the roof. It’s tempting to devote more time and attention to more fashionable maintenance and upgrades like updated kitchen appliances or new bathroom vanities. However, those improvements might lose much of their appeal if water begins dripping through the ceilings or mold starts growing in the walls. When preparing for winter, the top of your to-do list should include what’s on top of your house. Take the time to ensure your roof is up to the task of protecting everything − and everyone − it shelters beneath by following these simple steps: 1. Start by visually scanning the roof for any sagging or uneven areas, which can be signs of damage to the roof deck below the shingles. 2. Clear the gutters of any branches, leaves or other debris that could clog downspouts. Water or snow that is left standing on the roof will increase the likelihood of leaking or ice damming, which can damage not only to the roof, but the interior walls as well. 3. Ensure the gutters are fastened properly and securely to the fascia board, to minimize the risk of the gutters loosening or, in extreme conditions, falling off while supporting heavy snow and/or ice. 4. Remove any debris from the valleys, including small branches and accumulating leaves, which can add weight to the roof and also inhibit proper drainage. 5. Check the positioning and the condition of the flashings, which are the thin pieces of material, often made of aluminum or other metals, used to prevent water seepage between joints and seams around vents, pipes, skylights, and chimneys. When loosened or damaged by high winds and heavy rains, flashings can actually cause leaks rather than prevent them. 6. Examine the condition of the shingles and repair or replace any that might be missing or damaged. Look for curling edges or missing granules. Inspecting your roof at least twice a year (before and after winter) by following these steps will help you identify potential problems before they result in costly repairs or even premature roof replacement.
