Manitowoc County Fair introduces new events and vendors This year’s county fair will include a talent competition and an educational tent By Abbey Schubert/HTR Media

The Manitowoc County Fair, running Aug. 25-30 at the Manitowoc County Expo grounds, is introducing a few new activities and events this year to provide a fresh experience for annual fairgoers. “Our Expo Ice Center Board is always trying to look for new ideas and new things to give guests something else to enjoy at the fair,” said Jennell Krizek, facility manager of the Expo Ice Center.

Showcasing local talent This year, the fair is allowing local youth to show off their skills with a new talent contest. The Manitowoc County Junior Amateur Competition takes place at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Ice Center. Competitors 2 through 12 years will participate in the youth division, and those 13 to 18 years will belong to the teen division. Participants have the option of competing in dance, vocal, instrumental and variety categories. “It’s like an ‘America’s Got Talent’ type of competition, but on a much smaller scale,” Krizek said. The top three contestants in both the youth and teen divisions will receive cash prizes. In addition, the winners of each division will be eligible to compete in the statewide competition at next year’s state fair.

Entertainment for all Spectators can expect the same classic Grandstand events shown in previous years, including stock car racing, tractor pulls and a demolition derby. For other entertainment, fairgoers can head to the rock, polka and variety tents for live music each day of the fair. As always, the fair will also appeal to a younger crowd with pony rides and a large variety of carnival rides. Those looking for a thrill can check out Extreme Sports, who will offer bungee jumping, rock climbing and mechanical bull rides. For a daily admission fee of $10, fairgoers can enjoy unlimited carnival rides, parking, grandstand entertainment, live music, Ice Center entertainment, pony rides and petting zoo, and new this year is a $5 daily entry for veterans. Guests can also purchase a $25 season pass, $1 tiny tot admission for ages 1-5, $5 senior admission for age 60 and older, and free admission for children younger than 1. These tickets include everything but the rides.

Annual county animal sale returns to fair By Abbey Schubert/HTR Media

The Manitowoc County Market Animal Sale is returning to the fair this year with a few new twists to the annual event. The sale, typically a Wednesday night tradition in the Walters Building, is taking on a new day and location this year, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27, in the Lesters Building. In addition to this change in setting, the event will no longer include the annual complimentary buyers’ meal prior to the sale. Instead, buyers can stop at the registration table in the sale tent to receive a coupon for a meal at one of the fair’s various local food stands.

Education for the kids

At the sale, 78 sellers ranging in age from 9 to 19 will auction off the beef, pigs, sheep and goats they’ve raised to the highest bidders.

Along with this new contest, the Manitowoc County Fair is introducing an AG Adventureland tent not seen in years past. The tent, on the south end of the Milk Parlor, will educate fairgoers about a variety of topics, including alpacas and goats, invasive plant species, sheep shearing and more.

To be eligible for the sale, the sellers, most of whom are involved in 4-H or FFA, were required to spend hours in educational meetings and clinics, where they learned what it takes to successfully raise quality market animals. In addition, the animals needed to surpass a minimum weight to be included in the sale.

“The tent is geared more toward the youth,” Krizek said. “We’ll have coloring and raffles for them, and we want to educate them about the variety of animals they might not typically see in a barn.”

Vendors, old and new As far as food goes, guests can expect many of the same tasty treats they see annually, with a few new options to indulge in as well. “Eat my Bloomers,” a new addition to the fair’s food court, will offer fairgoers blooming onions, fries, chick on a stick, tenderloin and more. The others are returning vendors that we are happy to have coming back,” Krizek said. “It’s nice to have those, because you know they always do a good job.””

“It’s important to teach kids where our food comes from and the responsibility learned from taking care of animals,” said Bill Meulemans, president of the Manitowoc County Market Animal Committee Board of Directors. “We do so by providing educational opportunities during the year on the proper way to raise a market animal, and providing scholarship opportunities for those pursuing further education.” Scholarships are offered every year to students who have participated in a market animal project at some point in their 4-H or FFA careers and are planning to attend a college or university. This year, $6,500 will be handed out among seven winners at the beginning of the sale. All fairgoers interested in supporting the efforts of local youth are welcome to participate in the sale.

Some of these beloved returners include Blue Barn Cheese Curds, Pita Hut and McMeen’s Candies. Once again, the fair will also feature a batch of indoor vendors, including both new and old faces. Businesses such as Tastefully Simple and Costco may look familiar to fairgoers, while Downtown Dance Company, Horsey Habit, If You Can Dream It Travel and many other groups are taking to the fair for the very first time.

BRAUN ELECTRIC – YOUR CERTIFIED AG/COMMERCIAL BIG ASS FAN DEALER!

Words From the Fairest of the Fair Hello I am Cheyenne Mueller, your 2015 Manitowoc County Fairest of the Fair. I am the daughter of Dave and Jackie Mueller. I am from rural Manitowoc where I grew up on a hobby farm raising steers, pigs, and chickens.

I always enjoyed the fair food and going on rides with friends. I think that our fair has something to offer for everyone and I hope that everyone will enjoy it as much as I do. This year, I have had the privilege to represent the Manitowoc County Fair by attending multiple community events.

I graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln in 2013 and am currently attending University of Wisconsin Platteville where I am majoring in Soil and Crop Science.

So far I have attended the Brillion Electric Parade, Sundae Thursday, Manitowoc County Breakfast on the Farm, the Maribel Parade, handed out fair schedules at the Manitowoc races, and scooped Ice Cream at Pine River Dairy.

I have been attending the Manitowoc County Fair since I was a youth. I started showing of the Fair at the fair when I Country Fairest 2015 Manitowoc enne Mueller. ey Ch was five through the Farm Bureau’s Kiddie Showmanship. As I got older I started to I am excited to meet many new people and exhibit crafts, projects, and pigs through experience new opportunities. 4-H. My favorite part of the fair was always walking through the barns and exhibition building to see the projects and animals that all of my fellow 4-H members worked so hard on.

I hope to see you all at the Manitowoc County Fair August 25-30! See you there! Cheyenne Mueller, 2015 Manitowoc County Fairest of the Fair
