She has that J. Crew model unfussiness – a little undone in all the right ways. A master of chic simplicity. Ostrenga-Ruffell comes from a family of “scroungers” – builders, constructors, fabricators. Her parents founded Ostrenga Excavating when she was young, so while her father built, Ostrenga-Ruffell would collect the scraps of wood that fell from his work bench for her own projects. “Something was always being built,” Ostrenga-Ruffell says of her childhood. “It was constant.” The do-it-yourself culture which has become so popular, and is the backbone of Fritz & Sparrow, was her family’s lifestyle growing up, Ostrenga-Ruffell says. “My dad’s take on everything is why hire someone when you can do it yourself?”

After high school, Ostrenga-Ruffell attended UWMilwaukee for art and design. While at UWM she met her husband, Alan, and the couple bought a bungalow in Milwaukee’s Washington Heights neighborhood. “We gutted the entire second floor and made what was one bedroom with attic space into two bedrooms and a bath. I had officially gotten the remodeling bug,” she says. In 2006 when Ostrenga-Ruffell was expecting her second child, the family relocated back to Green Bay and she began working for her family business. During this time she began creating coffee tables and other pieces which she sold online. All the while, she dreamed of opening a brick and mortar location. With the business knowledge she picked up at her family’s business, and an overflowing inventory of her handmade items, Ostrenga-Ruffell opened Fritz & Sparrow in November 2015. Ostrenga-Ruffell likens her store’s style to that of West Elm, a national retailer offering modern furniture, home accessories and kitchen items. She hoped to achieve a similar style based on clean lines and locally made items. “I like to feel things and touch things so there aren’t any surprises,” she says. “One of the reasons the store is the way it is, is because I’m trying to source a lot of my products from smaller makers here in the U.S.” Rebecca welds steel legs onto her coffee and end tables.

you spotlight Handmade haven Ostrenga-Ruffell believes a home should be a living piece of art, one that tells the story of its inhabitants. Her own 1900era Dutch colonial is a great example of this. In her dining room sits a federal style buffet. On the opposite wall hangs a print of “Campbell’s Soup Cans” by Andy Warhol. “I would probably describe my style as eclectic,” Ostrenga-Ruffell says. “I don’t follow any one style. Somehow it works, even though they are different eras. I like to keep things clean and simple. That’s the unifying element.”

Ostrenga-Ruffell takes the same approach when creating her tables. The mother of three finds design inspiration everywhere – from hardware stores and flea markets to the colorful pages of a magazine. “After inspiration strikes, the design brews in my head, often in the middle of the night, keeping me awake,” she says. “Once I have a fairly decent vision of the piece, I draw it out to scale and begin the process of picking out the materials, making the various pieces and finally assembling and finishing.” She keeps two or three projects in

the works at all times which keeps her moving when one piece is being glued or drying. “I tend to jump around a lot and having multiple projects going on at once keeps me engaged.” Handcraftsmanship has long been a part of Ostrenga-Ruffell’s life and she says she is excited to be part of Green Bay’s growing design community. “I will continue to add to the product lines [at Fritz & Sparrow] and am always looking to be at the forefront of design and bringing something different to Green Bay.”

In 1985, Kathy and Bill Bressers, owners of Wm’s Jewelers in De Pere, began to build toward their dream of working together. Bill was artistic and needed an outlet for that creativity, so he tried the jewelry program at NWTC. “He was very good at it,” Kathy says. “He started working at first for Rost Jewelers in West De Pere. We then started our business, Wm’s Jewelers, Inc., in 1985 in East De Pere.” As their business grew and expanded, Kathy gave up teaching and started studying diamond certification through the Gemological Institute of America. Since opening the business three decades ago, they’ve dedicated nearly every waking moment to ensuring their customers are taken care of like family. The store carries a wide variety of jewelry, ranging from fine jewelry with diamonds and gemstones, to contemporary sterling jewelry. “We’ve always been able to customize things for customers,” says Kathy. “Being small, we have the ability to special order and get things from different vendors for people.” Repairs are done in-store by Bill, so people can trust that everything is staying in De Pere and will be worked on with the utmost care and expertise. Kathy says their team is adamant about finding designs for their customers that are well made and will stand the test of time. “We’re not afraid to show the good and bad aspects of any design,” stresses Kathy. “And we try to inform our customers of things that are going to last, because sometimes the styles that are popular aren’t going to carry them into years of wear.” Kathy says she and her husband Bill love making people happy. Whether it’s a piece of jewelry for everyday wear or only for special occasions, she knows people have come to trust their advice. “Building a relationship with families and with customers – you start to learn what they like,” she furthers. “You can make good suggestions for their loved ones to purchase things for them, and then they come back and you know they were happy with the choices they made. That’s an amazing part of it.”

A woman with an incredible sense of style almost always lives in a home that we’re just dying to peek into, one that reflects the same attention to detail as her eye-catching outfits, always intentional and effortless. I toured the homes of three local women, each with a completely unique and vibrant sense of style and a love for home decor, taking a moment to pick their brains with the hopes of learning a thing or two.

Blaire Hill-Morois, a certified veterinary technician and operations manager at The Animal House Pet Clinic, has created a bright family home filled with beautiful color. Her personal style is bold and colorful, drawing inspiration from the 1950s and ‘60s. Blaire describes her style as artsy, eclectic, eccentric, mid-century modern inspired, and vintage meets science/nature loving nerd. Her grandmother is her inspiration, a woman who preferred to dress up and keep things funky. Blaire is also inspired by the iconic figures of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Iris Apfel, Twiggy and Frank Lloyd Wright and these influences are apparent in her home. Her secret for creating a welcoming space is all about creating angles and being careful not to place everything on the outside perimeter of the room, using angles to add depth and to draw everyone into the inside of a room. Blaire’s most treasured find is her dining room table which has become the “heart of the home,” handcrafted by her brother out of a salvaged 14-foot bowling lane!

Teresa Ann Gifford, owner of The Assemblage Studio in downtown Green Bay, has a magically eclectic and whimsical style which she creates by focusing on layering (she handmade her paper bead necklace!). Her historic Astor Park home is a grand mixture of old and new, with plenty of artwork nestled in-between. Teresa’s signature design trick is stacking and clustering collections to better show them off – stacking old books as a makeshift stand, sitting old dollhouses and birdhouses atop porch columns and displaying favorite objects or artwork on cake plates. Teresa adores antiquing and her favorite find is an enchanting chippy green cupboard which holds her charmingly mismatched dishes.

Callista Troup is a stay-at-home mother who lives in a picturesque home overlooking the bay. Her chic style is classic, traditional and wonderfully preppy. Callista’s two major sources for inspiration are Pinterest and her mother-in-law Coe Troup, and the family’s love for life on the water is evident by the nautical touches throughout. Her simple trick for creating a cozy space is using down inserts for decorative pillows, a pretty and comfortable solution. Callista shares one of her best design secrets for living with kids is the reupholstery of most of her furniture and cushions in Sunbrella, a fabric that holds up incredibly well against sticky fingers and messy paws. Her most treasured finds are the artwork collected on trips in the U.S. and abroad, all of which hold very special memories.

with her hands, as a young girl Chynna King repurposed whatever she had and found laying around – including jewelry – to make handcrafted items. Though her creations back then may have been limited in scope, King eventually funneled that creative ambition into Lava Essentials, her line of essential oil diffuser lava bead jewelry. The business allows King, 26, to combine her passion for essential oils and her need for a creative outlet. The result is a sophisticated line of delicate bracelets, rings and necklaces that are both beautiful and functional. When essential oils are applied to the lava beads, they diffuse slowly throughout the day, creating long-lasting aromatherapy benefits for the wearer. “I really wanted to be able to utilize my essential oils on the go, aromatically,” King says. “So naturally, I hopped online to search for essential oil jewelry. Sadly, I didn’t find anything I would ever wear on a daily basis. I wanted something unique and minimalistic, something less obvious. Thankfully through my search I came across beaded lava stone bracelets. “The bracelets weren’t really my style,” she adds, “but I loved the concept of lava beads and using them to diffuse essential oils.”

King says she’s been trying to take a more natural approach to healing, and finally after a bit of prodding from a friend, she took the time to research the benefits of essential oils. “I was amazed at the testimonies and what real, pure essential oils can do for you,” she explains. “About a year and a half ago I bought a huge kit of essential oils, and since then we’ve been hooked. King says the lower profile of Lava Essentials is what draws people to the line. They can enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy every day, but in a less obvious way than some of the more popular diffuser styles. “This also means you don’t have to use essential oils, because the jewelry is cute and beneficial regardless,” she explains. “Lava stones are thought to be stones of protection, strength and even fertility – as well as a grounding stone.” King built the line’s presence on Instagram first, but because the response was so positive and overwhelming, she quickly had to move most of her business transactions to Etsy. The transition was relatively easy, explains King, because the Etsy marketplace brings so many handmade shops together. King says that purchasing a piece of jewelry from Lava Essentials is also more than a simple business transaction. When you support a small business, you’re supporting a family as well. “Shopping small, it’s more than just buying something that’s unique and creative,” she says. “You’re investing in something that is so special. It’s more than just money for small businesses. It’s passion and creativity and there’s so much love that goes into every single piece.”

Not only does this blend of 5 essential oils smell absolutely amazing, it keeps our family healthy with its ability to support healthy immune function. We like to put a few drops in a roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and rub it on our toddler’s feet every night, in addition to diffusing it at home almost every day.

Lavender

Lavender is one of those oils it seems you can use for just about anything! I love to use it topically to aid in healing acne and scrapes, mixed in blends to encourage relaxation and restful sleep, and mixed with coconut oil it makes a fantastic diaper rash cream.

Wild Orange

Now this is my absolute favorite oil to diffuse on my lava jewelry. It’s sweet, fresh citrus scent is incredibly up lifting. I also love to add a drop to my fruit smoothies, as well as mix in a few drops with my natural kitchen cleaner.

Frankincense

The king of oils and one I will never live without. Frankincense was one of the first gifts given to Jesus by the wise men, and for good reason! I personally use Frankincense for just about everything, but here are just a few ways you can benefit from it: antiaging, stress relieving, scar remedy, inflammation relief, disinfectant and its antiseptic qualities can even help prevent oral health problems.

Lemon

Lemon oil is great for purifying your home, and even your body. I add it to everything from homemade household cleaners to my bottle of water. Disclaimer: Always use pure, ethically sourced and properly distilled essential oils from a company you trust.
