YOU MAGAZINE STAFF
Goodbyes are hard This is my last letter as editor of YOU Magazine. (For the record, there’s a baseballsized lump in my throat as I write this.) I’ve tried a million ways of saying what I feel about my tenure as YOU Magazine editor, and it never sounds right. It always ends up sounding corny. It sounds trite to say that I’m forever grateful for this opportunity I’ve had. That I’m humbled by your reception, of me and this magazine. That I’ve learned more than I could have ever dreamed. The thing is, it’s all true. Every corny word. Pumping out each month’s issue rarely felt like work. It was an adventure and an honor. But the biggest thing I’ve learned as YOU Magazine editor is that Green Bay is home to some seriously badass boss ladies. The quality and quantity of exceptional women in this community is nothing short of astounding. The female population in Green Bay is a force to be reckoned with – my only hope is that YOU Magazine is a reflection of that fierceness. As much as I hate to go, I am thrilled to leave you with this May Arts & Entertainment Issue – talk about ending on a high note. Cover women Andi and Alex Peot, who you might have seen on NBC’s The Voice last year, talk about their forthcoming album and tour on page 8. Poland-born, Green Bay-based artist Marta Spendowska gives us an inside look at her process creating some of the most beautiful watercolors you will ever see on page 24. Then learn all about Green Bay’s latest public art installment on page 16. This issue is filled with all things artistic and entertaining. I think you are going to love it. On that note, I bid you adieu. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for YOU Magazine and the faithful advertisers, loyal readers and talented contributors who make it what it is. Over and out,

It was a drizzly spring afternoon when I met up with Andi and Alex Peot, the captivating twin sister vocalists from Green Bay who competed on NBC’s “The Voice” last year. The Emmy Award-winning television show features vocalists from across the country competing against each other with help from celebrity musician coaches like Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani. The twins’ perfectly angelic harmonies on their cover of Dido’s “Thank you” carried them through the blind audition for the show and delivered them their choice of coach. “The Voice” was an experience that ultimately launched their career as a duo, and one for which they are incredibly grateful. Our afternoon began with a wild f lurry of boutique fittings and hair and makeup appointments, amidst plenty of coffee and smiles. Andi and Alex were charming and energetic, happy to go with the f low and be our mannequins for the day, apparently unaffected by the

Andi and Alex are a pair that you’ll not soon forget, natural head-turning beauties with an elegance and confidence that leaves a lasting impression. The girls were transformed into festival fashion looks inspired by the supremely stylish music fest season. These blonde bombshells allowed the perfect opportunity to showcase looks inspired by the peace, love and rock-and-roll vibes of those fairgrounds, with a strong 70’s inf luence being the center of attention. Hippie chic bellbottoms, breezy blouses and boho embroidery all took center stage. As the outside drizzle finally dried into lazy sunshine, the Peot sisters were once again revamped, this time channeling the edgy romance and theatrics of glam rock. Wildly adorned in smoky eyes, beading and sparkles, they were transformed into looks fit for a pop princess.

After our photo shoot we sat down to chat music and dreams. The girls described their musical style as alternative, indie rock and gushed over artists who inspired them – Sufjan Stevens, Coldplay and Fleet Foxes to name a few. They reminisced about their first time singing for an audience, a rendition of “Jesus Loves Me” sung in church at age 2, and talked about their first band, She the Monster. Now as they blaze their newest music trail, they are reinventing themselves as artists, writing new music and polishing their unique sound. In April the duo recorded their first album as Andi and Alex, comprised of all original work, and this August they will go on tour. When asked about “The Voice,” the

girls described the hours spent sitting in perfectly styled hair and makeup, with constant touch ups, waiting for that hour-long interview eventually edited into 30-second blurbs for television. When asked about the celebrities they met on the show Andi remembers, “It was so intimidating, but on the other hand such a huge privilege to be a part of that crazy amazing adventure. The scary part was not the singing, it was ‘What am I going to say to them? How do I talk to people like this?’” she laughs. “Yeah, I sing like an angel, but I’m such an idiot when I talk!” Ultimately, that was not at all the case. The girls gained a devoted fan base from the viewers at home and they were well-spoken and confident under pressure, making their hometown of Green Bay incredibly proud.

Following on the heels of three successful mural installations in downtown Green Bay, Olde Main Street’s Art on Main initiative continues to grow. The focus of Art on Main is to ignite passion and conversation by bringing art out of the galleries and onto the street. It serves as a community revitalization enhancement and a way to drive economic development. This has never been more apparent as the initiative celebrates the installation of the fourth mural this spring by artist Beau Thomas, of Green Bay.

your life “We are incredibly excited to share that there is another mural coming in 2016!” says Brehanna Skaletski. “Artist Beau Thomas, thanks in large part to Wenz Home Furniture, will be installing a fine-art graffiti mural on the Kuehn Printing Building. It’s approximately 109-feet long and 20-feet tall and will serve as our signature mural and west-end marker for the Olde Main Street District.” Murals on Main began in 2014, when muralist Wes Martin sought an urban setting with strong ties to Native American cultures. Martin chose several locations throughout the United States, including Green Bay. He painted the Native American inspired pattern on the NWTC Artisan and Business Center building and the mural program was set into motion. From there, Candace Cole and her students from Artists Afternoons Outside painted the Frida Kahlo mural on the Los Banditos building, and the Au Naturale Cosmetics team supported Matt Bero’s Morty the Moose mural in the district. “Art can engage the community in a very unique way and really unite the community and bring diverse groups together under the shared interest of art or creativity or expression,” explains Bero of the impact of public art. “It’s a huge opportunity to show off Green Bay’s talent.” Thomas’ mural for 2016 will have financial support from Wenz Home Furniture. Thomas, who is owner of Trackside Design, expects the process will take two weeks once it is started. “I think the art culture is a good ref lection of the community,” states Thomas. “If the art culture is strong, and you can see there are public works of art, that shows

Catalyst In addition to the Murals on Main, Matt Bero and Kent Hutchison, another area artist, will be kicking off a brand-new event this fall. Known as “Catalyst,” the event will be a one-of-a-kind experience focused on the arts, including visual, performance and culinary. It will not only continue to elevate the arts experiences offered in Green Bay, say organizers, but also help to raise funds directly for Art on Main. “Catalyst is an art show, but it’s really nothing like Green Bay has seen before,” explains Bero. “It will be a multisensory adventure into the artists’ minds and processes. We’ve included everything from performance art to painting to sculpture, and food will also be an aspect. The audience will basically be immersed into a world of creativity.” Planned for early to mid September, it will be a limited-ticket event. More information will be forthcoming from organizers.
that people care about the community, as opposed to blank walls and billboards. I think that art, and public art especially, really adds value to a property and the community. People who come visit the city will remember it and it becomes ingrained in the community.” Chris Wenz, owner of Wenz Home Furniture, says their participation fits well with what the team at Wenz Home Furniture does daily. “Our mission is to try to build relationships and then create inspired atmospheres,” he explains. “And what could be better than to build a relationship with all the partners in the downtown businesses and the community, and then talk about creating inspired atmospheres – here we have a literal artist inspiration. He’s bringing it to life and he’ll hopefully, in turn, inspire other artists.” “This is really an example of local businesses and local people coming together and putting resources together to really produce something for the common good,” adds Thomas. “It’s really cool to be a part of that community effort. I feel honored to have the opportunity.” Community participation in the programs is encouraged. The opportunities to get involved with Art on Main, and Murals on Main, are endless, says Skaletski. The Artist and the Sea
PAINTER MARTA SPENDOWSKA CHANNELS HER EUROPEAN ROOTS IN GREEN BAY BY COLLEEN RIORDAN
A drop of Baltic Sea water is added to each painting Marta Spendowska creates. Once a year, she travels to her home country and returns with a small bottle of the sea water. Growing up in Jawor, Poland, she cherished childhood visits to the Baltic Sea. Her love for the water is expressed in the beautiful watercolors of her fine art. Each piece manages to convey both passion and delicacy. “I love that f luid motion of watercolor. I love everything about being free and free spirited, and watercolor suits that emotion.” For Spendowska, who is primarily self-taught, shifting into a modern, contemporary style was a challenge. “I started abstracting f lorals and…transitioning totally to abstract, which was the scariest thing to do. “It’s very hard to keep certain important elements like line composition or color in mind when you don’t have an image to copy from. With abstract, you don’t have guidance so you have to create from nothing, which is very difficult, and you have to keep in mind

those rules. It’s basically experimentation.” Spendowska plays with different materials and textures to create the vivid paintings. Oils, waxes, acrylics, resins, and the Baltic Sea water can each be used to achieve effects like quartz, swirling seafoam, and deep pools. “With the fine art, I just react to paint. Because I work so f luidly, something happens that I never expected. The paint has a mind of its own. My job is to react to it.” The decision to immigrate to the United States was easy for Spendowska. In 2002, she had studied in Atlanta for six months, and it was there that she sold her first original art. “I just fell in love with America and its possibilities.” After returning home, she completed her masters in marketing from the University of

Lodz near Warsaw, Poland and settled into a job. A phone call from a friend changed everything. Together, they planned to move overseas and attempt to make new lives for themselves. Her friend never did end up moving, but Spendowska could not let the moment pass. “I was really driven by the idea. I knew that Poland was not offering me [the chance to be creative], and I thought that America might.”
In the next few years, she worked a number of odd jobs in the United States in order to stay af loat and practiced art on the side. Eventually, she married and moved to Green Bay. “I thought we would be here for two years, and time just f lies by,” she says. “I find that Wisconsin reminds me of Poland. It’s the landscape.” Spendowska is well-known for her commercial works. She studied graphic design at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. Experience in the design world at Arketype and Insight Creative helped to refine her skills and develop meaningful connections. Her unique style has gotten the attention of brands including Oprah Magazine, Domino, Danielle LaPorte and Target.
The perfect gift for your Graduate!

delicious grilled cheese 3 TIPS FOR UNBELIEVABLY
As a kid, it didn’t get much better than grilled cheese: the buttery toast, the molten cheese and the savory satisfaction from that first bite to the last. Fast-forward to adulthood. Somehow throwing together two pieces of white bread with a slice of processed cheese simply doesn’t have the same appeal.
Fortunately, chefs around the country are reimagining the kid-approved favorite and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches are popping up on the menus of restaurants everywhere. Their secret: Mix up the ingredients and cooking methods to reinvent this classic comfort food into a palatepleasing meal for all ages. Here are our secrets for recreating a gourmet grilled cheese in your own kitchen.
Think beyond the slice
The heart of any great grilled cheese sandwich is the cheese itself. Don’t limit yourself to plastic-wrapped options. Taste buds will dance when you blend different flavorful varieties. Some of the best options for a simply better grilled cheese include: Havarti: Has a light buttery, creamy taste with a mellow aroma and is semi-soft, so it melts perfectly. Pair Havarti with fruit, jam or honey in your next grilled cheese for a sweet surprise.
Gouda: Has a rich buttery, slightly sweet flavor and a smooth, creamy texture that’s irresistible when melted. Savory flavors complement Gouda - try it with prosciutto or tomato. Muenster: Has a mild flavor and smooth, soft texture that stands out alone or is the perfect complement when melted alongside other cheese varieties. Match Muenster with sliced avocado for a sandwich that’s a smashing success. Fontina: A semi-soft cheese with a slightly sharp edge that is the perfect upgrade to any melty dish. Add fresh basil or pesto to a Fontina grilled cheese for a refreshing twist.
Get decadent flavor without the guilt Classic comfort foods like grilled cheese will fill the belly and warm the heart, but they don’t necessarily have the healthiest reputation. A more wholesome grilled cheese doesn’t

your life mean sacrificing flavor. Elevate your grilled cheese with these healthful tricks: Get choosy with cheese: Not all cheese is created equally. Try Arla cheese - a better-for-you cheese from a farm-to-fridge company. The naturally delicious cheese is made without any artificial flavors or preservatives and follows traditional recipes that have been handed down from generations. Veg out: Fresh fruits and vegetables can be the perfect addition for a nutrition and flavor boost to grownup grilled cheese recipes. Add in avocado, amp it up with apple slices or get a little crazy with cucumber. The sky is the limit. A bonus tip is to stack your veggies inside the slices of cheese to lock in every bit of gooey, delicious flavor.
Pack in the protein: The average person should get approximately 30 grams of protein at each meal, according to the Journal of Nutrition. You can get a jumpstart with Arla cheese, which has between 4 and 6 grams of protein in each slice. Visit www.ArlaUSA.com/GrilledCheese to learn more. Opt for whole grain: Say goodbye to the pasty sliced white bread of your youth and instead select a lovely whole grain bread from a local bakery for a tasty sandwich with a more wholesome crunch. Banish butter: Traditionally grilled cheese is made with butter or margarine, but you can still grill a mean sandwich when you select a lighter option. For example, swap in coconut oil or olive oil, which feature nutrient-packed fats and omegas, so you feel good as you munch on grilled goodness.
Polish your cooking strategy The final step in creating a better grilled cheese is to revise your cooking strategy. Some ideas to try: Skip the spread: Put down that butter knife entirely and instead add oils directly to the skillet rather than spreading it on bread. Warm up the pan, melt your oil and then get ready to grill to a golden brown. Grill both sides: The perfect pairing to that awesome Havarti or Gouda is lightly toasted bread. To get a decadent crunch, try grilling both sides of the bread. Start by placing the plain bread slices on the skillet in oil to toast, then flip and add the cheese. Both sides get grilled and the cheese melts quicker. Cook low and slow: Have patience! You’ll get better results when you use medium-low heat rather than rushing. If you use too high of a temperature, you’ll burn the bread without thoroughly melting the cheese.
