As a child, I remember Christmas being all about the presents – those glittery packages under the tree, just begging to be rattled in hopes of discovering the contents within. The older I get, the more Christmas is about everything else – spending time with those you love most, watching cheesy holiday movies and driving through the neighborhood on a winter night to check out the twinkling lights. These days the holidays are all about the feeling. Whether it’s that cozy feeling you get on a snowy winter morning or the anticipation of visiting friends and hanging out with family you don’t get enough of, those feelings are what I look forward to most each holiday season.

Our Holiday Issue is a nod to those wonderful holiday butterflies and all the hustle and bustle that comes along with the season. This month I was honored to sit down with cover woman Molly Crosby, wife of Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby, over some fabulously indulgent lattes at La Java in Suamico. We talked holiday traditions, football (of course) and even about some of the weirdest dining experiences we’ve had while traveling. We also spent a good deal of time discussing a cause near and dear to Molly’s heart, the Give-A-Kid-A-Book Campaign coordinated by the Friends of Brown County Library. Molly is a second-year spokesperson for the campaign and her passion is absolutely contagious. Turn to page 8 to get the scoop and learn how you can help give disadvantaged children the gift of reading this Christmas. This year I’ve made a goal to make – yes, craft – at least a few Christmas gifts on my list. If you know me, you will realize what a ludicrous statement this is. Molly Crosby was the little girl whose punishment for being naughty was getting her books revoked. “I would even hide my Harry Potter book inside my Bible so I could get away with reading during church,” the 31-yearold Colorado native admits sheepishly. “Yeah, I kind of loved to read.” Fittingly, Crosby is now a second-year spokesperson for the Give-A-Kid-A-Book campaign coordinated by the Friends of Brown County Library. The campaign collects new, unwrapped books for disadvantaged babies, children and teens so every child may discover the joy of receiving their very own book.

Crosby says her involvement with the program is fueled by her love of reading, but she is also drawn to its clear, achievable mission. “More than ever I’m aware that I have a life of extreme privilege,” says Crosby, who has been married to Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby since 2008. “Even still, I have hard days as a parent where I don’t know what I’m doing or I feel like I’m messing my kids up. But something I always feel really good about is sitting down with them and reading. All parents should have that same opportunity.”

Season to Read Crosby, a self-described “nerd,” always loved school and learning. She and Mason met while she was a cheerleader at the University of Colorado Boulder and he played on the football team. (Are they too perfect or what?) Crosby majored in Chinese language and civilization, and studied in China for a summer while she learned to read and write Mandarin. The experience was life altering. “It was humbling to see my true place in the world,” Crosby says. “Traveling challenges your unvoiced beliefs. “One great book could totally alter a child’s trajectory and that’s incredible to me,” she says. “We just want to see kids reaching potential and, even more than that, Give-A-Kid-A-Book equips parents to have that bonding experience through reading. I love the dignity of it.” For families in need, a book seems like a luxury. The GiveA-Kid-A-Book program makes it possible for these families to access reading materials to call their own. More than 10,000 books were collected last year meaning 5,250 children in Brown County each received two books in 2014. “If parents are working so hard and they have to choose between a hot meal for their kids or a hardcover book, they are going to choose the meal,” Crosby says. “But this campaign has proven that the hardcover book is just as important.” It’s easy for Crosby to imagine how different her life may have been had she not been adopted by her parents when she was just nine months old. 10 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | NOVEMber 2015

“My birth mother was very young when she had me,” she says. “She made that loving sacrifice to give her child up for adoption. My life took a few different twists, but had I been in that situation I would hope someone would help me, would have given me a book.” This year, Crosby invited two other Packer women to join her as co-spokespeople of the campaign: Monica Goode, wife of long snapper Brett Goode, and Amanda Masthay, wife

She likens their involvement with the campaign to the teamwork their husbands achieve on the football field. “Mason can’t kick a game winning field goal without Tim and Brett and I feel that is what Amanda and Monica are going to do for this campaign,” Crosby says. “To have them in the fold puts us in the position to kick a game winner, sending this effort into overtime, setting and achieving goals that were previously out of reach.” The women will serve as ambassadors by encouraging the public to donate new, unwrapped books on topics that are relevant to them.

“It’s an opportunity for individuals to preserve their interests. If you love China, let’s say, you can donate a really cool geography book,” Crosby says. “It’s such a neat way to hand down ideas.”

Family & Faith The Crosbys put a strong emphasis on supporting families and are actively involved in many organizations which benefit children. For example, Mason is the spokesperson for Make-A-Wish Wisconsin which works to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“I want to be [Mason’s] partner and support him in his career, but now we are partners in something bigger which is raising our family and trying to still like and love each other in the process of it,” she says. Crosby says the Christmas season is a time to ref lect on the great gifts we have been given and how we can express thanks by giving back to others. That makes it the perfect time to kick off the Give-A-Kid-A-Book campaign. “When you give a kid a book you actually give a gift to the whole family. Christmas time isn’t joyful for all the members of our community,” she says, “but sharing a book can make another family’s Christmas season a little bit brighter.”

“I try to support Mason in using the platform he’s been given to help others and kids are central to that,” Crosby says. Supporting child-focused causes is a no-brainer, says Crosby, who has three children of her own – Nolan, 5, Charlotte, 2, and Elizabeth who was born earlier this year. Becoming a mother has made Crosby more sympathetic to the challenges parents face, but it has also created many positives changes in her life. “I don’t think every woman has to be a mother to have the experiences I’ve had,” she says, “but for me, it’s made me messier, it’s made me more interesting, I think. It’s brought back some fun.” Crosby says before having her three children it was easy to get bogged down in “NFL life” by focusing on variables outside of her control. “There’s such an emphasis on how brief any NFL career is and I was just gripping on to it so tight,” she says. “For me, the experience of motherhood and not having the season record be the litmus test for how our lives are going, rocked my world – sometimes good, sometimes bad – but it put me into a much healthier space.” These days Crosby finds it easier to live in the present and focus on what is truly important to her – her family and spiritual faith.

Find a royalty-free image online or design your own and print it out.

Step 2:

Make your stain by mixing a 1:1 ratio of acrylic paint and water.

Winter Wine Walk

Usher in the holiday shopping season with a walk downtown alongside your best girlfriends or significant other, taking in the splendor of early winter and a plethora of samples from local wineries during the second annual Winter Wine Walk On Broadway.

Held on Friday evenings December 4, 11 and 18 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the event serves as a great way to do your holiday shopping downtown, while enjoying the best wines from local vintners. “We came up with the idea as a way to get people into our storefronts during the holidays – and wine tends to draw people in,” explains Ahnna Luckeroth, project manager for On Broadway, Inc. “It was more successful than we were expecting. We had a feeling people were going to enjoy it, but I think when we tried to calculate it, it was somewhere between 3,000 to 3,500 people who came down over those three nights.” Jill Zelzer, manager of A Bag Lady – located at 412 Dousman St. – says the inaugural event was a fabulous addition to the holiday shopping season.

“It brought so many people down,” she says. “And the thing that was so great is that people actually shopped – they loved it. People who wouldn’t normally come down to this area were realizing what a great area it is and how fun it was. I know that everyone was so excited about it and it was such a neat experience for everyone - retail people as well as the customers. It was just a fun, fun time.”

Winter Wine Walk On Broadway

Luckeroth and Zelzer said it was a great way for people to do holiday shopping and ensure what they were getting would be well received by their significant other. Things that were pointed out during the wine walk were then purchased the next day or a few days later.

Punch cards are $5 dollars and will be available for purchase at each location. All a visitor needs to do is pick a spot to start from the handy map included in this issue of YOU Magazine and begin the fun. Once you receive your sample, that corresponding hole will be punched for the night. If you don’t fill up your punch card in one night, bring it back the next week and continue the fun.

“And it’s a fun date night,” adds Luckeroth. “There are so many good restaurants, so you can come and shop, have a couple sips of wine and get some great food. I think all around it’s a good event that brings everything about the holidays together. It’s a fun feel.”

“If they want something unique, I believe all the stores truly complement each other,” states Zelzer. “I think you can go to one store and pick up a cute shirt, but then go to another and get a cute purse or jewelry. I really feel it’s a place to shop. It’s no longer that you come down and just see one store. There’s a whole street full and it’s all unique and really fun.”

“We always do some sort of instore special,” adds Zelzer. “We’ll do something different each time.”

Local couples embark on vintag camper e adventur es

In today’s culture of excess, a new movement is emerging. Living small and simply is becoming more appealing to more people. Maybe this explains the resurgence of the Airstream – a brand of luxury travel trailers originating in 1931 which represent the magic and mystery of the open road. Two local couples share their experiences of joining the growing ranks of Airstream owners. Green Bay-based photographer Erin Hanson and her husband, Adam, found their 1964 Airstream Tradewind 24’ on Craigslist in Wausau for $3,000. They named the camper Tess after Erin’s late grandmother. With help from family, friends and a very handy neighbor, the Hansons have been updating Tess over the past year and a half.

from erin & adam: “We had been looking for an Airstream for over a year. We can’t tell you how many times we pulled over, seeing them in yards, farms or sheds and inquired about these amazing little campers. The entire purpose was to have a little home-away-from-home for us and our children. In July, we purchased five acres in Sister Bay. It’s so wonderful having the Airstream call this piece of woods home. It’s peaceful, quiet and exactly our dream. We built Tess to be a vacation home, of sorts, in Door County. Someday, many years from now, we hope to build a cabin on our land. The Airstream will be a part of this and become a guest house for family and friends.”

from andrea & brian: “We love old things, are adventurous and were looking for a mobile basecamp. We checked Craigslist weekly and always had our eye open while driving down country roads. Our Airstream essentially is a tiny house with 60 years of character. To be honest, we did not know in full detail the scale of the project we were embarking on. To date we easily have 1,000+ hours in stretched out over 16 months. We most recently took the Airstream on a ‘maiden voyage’ around the Great Lakes over Labor Day weekend. Needless to say, it was a huge success! We are looking forward to our next trip which will be to Florida for Christmas this year. Joining the Airstream family is a lot of fun, if you decide to purchase never look back!”

Have a plan. Determine if you plan to restore the camper to period or modernize it. Ask yourself what the camper’s purpose will be – will it be used as a studio, small cabin or strictly a camper? “Set a timeline,” Andrea says. “Most people give up and quit with these projects because they under estimate the time commitment and expenses involved.” Be patient. “It’s most likely going to take twice as much work as you thought,” Erin says. “The Airstream forums online saved us many times.”

Brunch is served from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis, explains Ben Raupp, executive chef and owner.

For a weeknight date night, try Chefusion’s formal dining area on the lower floor, or stop by for happy hour in The Lounge and enjoy the restaurant’s small plate offerings. Wine and drink specials are complemented by menu items like a lobster and pork belly BLT, volcano shrimp and a Kobe beef burger. For your girls’ night out, make a reservation at Three Three Five. Walk for Wildlife is the main fundraiser and awareness-building event for Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary’s RPAWS rehabilitation program which cares for more than 4,500 sick, injured and orphaned wild animals each year. The 10th annual Walk for Wildlife culminated in the release of a rehabilitated owl. Participants spent a lovely autumnal morning walking the trails of the 700-acre Wildlife Sanctuary, stopping at various stations along the way to get an up-close view of the many animals, from foxes to falcons, who live at the Sanctuary.
