Giving Thanks

Publisher Scott Johnson

There’s lots to be thankful for this time of year – family, friends and food to name a few. As the holiday season goes into overdrive, I think we can all use a reminder of this. Hectic schedules, long lists and never-ending to-dos can drive us a little bonkers, but I think it just reminds us that we live full lives with lots of good going on. For this, I am grateful. This year’s Holiday Issue will put you in the right frame of mind to embrace the chaos. With party season in full swing, fashion contributor Kirsty Gungor shows us how to get the most mileage out of winter’s most unexpected item, the sequined biker jacket (pg. 14). A little bit pretty, a little bit tough, this trend can work just as well at a swanky office party as a laidback family gathering. Oh yeah, I’m also thankful for

fashion that multitasks. A Holiday Soirée (pg. 32) offers up ideas for throwing a picturesque party without a lot of hassle which is something I think we can all get behind. We have you covered with loads of holiday looks, tunes and décor tips. For the sake of all that is good in this world, please find time to make the chokes and cheese dip this holiday (recipe on pg. 37). Your family and friends will adore you. Of course, the holidays mean lots of school breaks which can leave some parents scrambling to find things for the kids to do. Not you, savvy YOU reader, because you read our Parent’s Holiday Survival Guide (pg. 44) and have the activity calendar filled with fun and frolic. The best part? None of it will break the bank. This month’s Spotlight feature profiles Jacqueline Frank, executive director of the National Railroad Museum. The museum is a holiday destination for families throughout the area and beyond. From The Polar Express to Festival of Trees, there’s lots to see and do and Jacqueline is in charge of it all. Turn to page 8 to read all about the woman at the helm of history and check out some images from her photo shoot at the museum. (Did you know the museum’s 1930s Silver Spirit lounge car can be rented for private parties? We’re thinking a Man Men inspired dinner party on the train would be to die for.) So when it all starts feeling a little overwhelming, just take a breath and remember how lucky you are to have the life you do – chaos and all. If all else fails, make the chokes and cheese. I’m telling you.

All Aboard! Jacqueline Frank keeps the holidays on track at the National Railroad Museum Story by Amelia Compton Wolff Photos by Mike Peters on location at the National Railroad Museum, Green Bay Hair and makeup services provided by Caroline Quinn of Mint Salon, Green Bay

Jacqueline Frank may have a master’s degree in history and, sure, she enjoys reading science books for fun, but don’t call her a nerd – at least in the traditional sense. “My thing is I want to make history cool and fun, so I hoping I’m not too much of a nerd, like just in a charming way,” the 36-year-old says. “I want to be a charming nerd.” Frank is the executive director of the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, a role she has been in since June 2010. On the spectrum of train nerdiness, she feels she lands somewhere in the middle. “We have our train enthusiasts, the ‘foamers,’ who are the biggest train nerds of all,” Frank says. “They’re foaming at the mouth when they see a train. I’m not that bad. It could be much worse.” A quick walk through the museum’s Frederick J. Lenfestey Center helps the uninitiated begin understanding the passion of “foamers” (which turns out to be old railway slang in addition to a great vocabulary word). There’s something awe-inspiring about standing in the shadows of a 1.1 million pound steam locomotive such as the Union Pacific Big Boy, the

world’s largest steam locomotive measuring nearly half a football field in length. In addition to Big Boy, the 26,000-square-foot Lenfestey Center is home to some of the most historic locomotives in the museum’s collection, not to mention the entire country. “We are one of the oldest railroad museums, so we own lots of locomotives that nobody else has anywhere or there are very few of them around. The Big Boy locomotive is one of only eight left. Our Dwight D. Eisenhower locomotive is the only one in the U.S.,” Frank says. “We are really lucky.”

Head of steam

The trains themselves are undeniably impressive, but how does one go about making history cool, even trendy, as is Frank’s mission? For her, it’s about creating a personal connection with visitors and telling the lesser known stories that bring the past to life. “I like to find something really weird to talk about,” Frank says. “It’s pushing the boundaries a little bit to make you think.”

you spotlight <<< spotlight continued from page 9 Frank points to the museum’s piece of rolling stock called the 40 & 8, a 20th century European boxcar. After World War II, France sent 49 of these boxcars to the United States in appreciation of the supplies they received from Americans during the war. French citizens filled the boxcars with items of gratitude and one was sent to each state, with Hawaii and Washington D.C. sharing one. The boxcar’s contents were scattered around the state and Frank admits it isn’t known where everything ended up, but there was one item that stands out in her mind. “A French man put in some black silk lingerie and said he wanted it to go to a beautiful blonde woman in the United States. That’s the kind of stuff that makes it interesting and fun, like, really? People were thinking like that? That’s not what you think of your grandparents or great grandparents,” Frank says. “But there’s a lot of craziness and I like to bring that out.” According to Frank, incorporating that craziness into exhibits and programs reveals tidbits of the human condition and helps create value for the many items in the museum’s collection. “It comes down to the human stories. Nothing that we own here, or in any museum in my opinion, means anything unless there’s a human story behind it,” she says. “They teach us things, they connect us to each other, to the generations. Without that human story it’s just stuff, it’s meaningless and there’s no reason to keep it all.” Frank has gotten good experience sharing those human stories – her roots in the Green Bay museum circuit run deep. She started out in high school as a tour guide with Heritage Hill Historical Park. She continued there for eight years, some of the time while she was attending the University of WisconsinGreen Bay. After earning her graduate degree from UW-Milwaukee, Frank worked for Green Bay’s Neville Museum as a recorder for nearly four years before joining the National Railroad Museum in 2007 to establish its education department and ensure the organization was meeting its educational mission. After almost eight years with the Railroad Museum, Frank finds herself

constantly learning, not just in her role as executive director, but about the museum and history in general. If she’s learned one thing about the National Railroad Museum over the years, it’s that it holds a multifaceted appeal beyond the obvious. “It’s not just trains. I came here and thought it’s all about trains,” she says. “There’s the train theme, but the focus can be anything you want it to be.”

Holiday bells & whistles

The holiday season is a prime time to visit the National Railroad Museum, whether you’re a rail buff or a train novice. “It’s a really rewarding time of year,” Frank says. “You see the families come in and they are just so happy.” One of the most anticipated events of the museum’s holiday lineup is The Polar Express dramatic reading and train ride which takes place the weekend after Thanksgiving and the first weekend of December. Congratulations to those of you who scored tickets – even after adding additional shows this year, The Polar Express sold out in less than 5 hours. (A heads up: next year tickets go on sale July 25 online and in the museum store.) “Next year we will add some shows prior to Thanksgiving as well,” says Frank, who confirms next year will feature nine additional shows for a total of 33 performances. “We don’t go far towards the Christmas season because it’s all volunteers. We have a tiny staff, about 10 people, but need 50 people to make The Polar Express work every year.” Even if you won’t be attending The Polar Express, there is still

Festival of Trees

November 28 - January 4 This holiday season, the National Railroad Museum will again host a Festival of Trees. This year’s theme is “Holly, Jolly Christmas!” Local businesses and organizations sponsor and decorate trees that are displayed in the Museum’s Frederick J. Lenfestey Center. Take advantage of the reduced holiday admission of $5 from Friday, November 28 through Sunday, January 4. Children under age 3 are always free. For further information, call (920) 437-7623 x 12.

Holidays on the Rails

December 8-11 with programming from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Visit the museum for seasonal stories, crafts, activities, a train ride and a visit with Santa. Students move between numerous activity stations, each featuring an interactive, hands-on experience. This program is designed for children in kindergarten through second grade. Admission is $5.00 per student. One chaperone per five students is free of charge. Visit nationalrrmuseum.org for more information.

<<< spotlight continued from page 11 stories, crafts, activities, a train ride and a visit with Santa. “It’s a really fun one for families with young children to come out and enjoy things you might see at The Polar Express, but in a low key, relaxed situation,” Frank says. Besides ushering in the holidays at the National Railroad Museum, Frank likes to kick off the season with a family tree cutting excursion the first week of December. Frank’s parents, brother, sister and their respective families make a day of finding and cutting the perfect tree. “We even bring the dogs,” she says. “Between all of us I think there’s six dogs running around so it’s mayhem, but it’s just a great way to start the holiday for all of us.” Each year, Frank enjoys seeing the families who have made the museum part of their holiday ritual. “Some come back year after year and this is their family tradition,” Frank says. “It’s a really awesome time to be here.”

On the horizon

The coming year will prove to be a significant one for Frank and the National Railroad Museum. The museum will be laying the groundwork for a capital campaign to raise funds for a brand new $20 million Smithsonian standard building. “We have an open air building for some trains that was built in the 1970s and it’s time to replace it,” Frank says. “We are raising money to take that down and rebuild something so we can bring all our trains inside.” The new building will have extra classroom space for educational programs and a larger children’s area with a restored sleeping car to accommodate more overnight trips. “We are hoping to break ground in the next seven years,” Frank says. “We want it to be iconic architecture like the Milwaukee Art Museum. The time is right to do something like that.”

12 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | NOVEMber 2014

The museum also recently raised funds for distance learning equipment and hopes to have the distance learning program up and running by early 2015. “We are hoping to do interactive programs from the museum through a monitor in the classroom so the kids aren’t taken away from classroom time,” Frank says. “That’s going to be really exciting. It’s basically like having a portable TV studio. We can do all of our educational programs, we can go into the cars, we can go anywhere in the museum.” The distance learning program enables the museum to share their exhibits with young people who otherwise might never have experienced them. “We are able to do it not only in this area, but across the United States,” Frank says. “We want to do our Pullman program which talks about labor history and civil rights history. We could bring that to inner city schools in Chicago.” Frank says the museum continues to grow by hosting events, strengthening educational programs and creating partnerships with local organizations. “We’ve really expanded our reach quite a bit,” Frank says. “It’s no longer your mom and pop little museum. It’s a much bigger entity.”

The perfect description of my fantasy holiday wardrobe. I’m such a sucker for sequins and no item is off limits – scarves, leggings, skirts, collars or heels. If they catch the light, I’m swooning. Sequined garments are made for the girl with diamonds in her eyes and I know I’m not the only one!

I’m sharing three ways to style one of my current closet favorites, a sequined biker jacket. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition, a unique but wearable mix of edgy meets glam. This season I’m determined to get as much wear out of my new twinkling purchase as possible, making it a go-to season staple rather than a one shot wonder.

Heard on the Street Good news about amazing things happening in our community By Amelia Compton Wolff

Local yogini Ryanne Cunningham is garnering national media attention for her work with athletes including several Green Bay Packers. This summer, Cunningham and her business, Flow Yoga Studio in De Pere, were featured in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article touting her success in using yoga to treat and prevent injuries among NFL athletes. Cunningham instructs about 15 Packers including wide receiver Randall Cobb and cornerback Tramon Williams. “The couple that started coming saw the benefits and now it’s booming,” says Cunningham who has been teaching yoga for 13 years. Cunningham analyzes game footage to customize sessions for the players based on what areas of their body need improvement

or extra care. Cunningham believes this story caught the attention of editors at Yoga Journal, a national yoga lifestyle magazine. Yoga Journal contacted Cunningham for what she believed would be a quote within a story on yoga for athletes in the November issue. You can imagine her surprise when she picked up the magazine a few months later and realized she was the story. “It was much bigger than I expected,” says Cunningham who explains for a yogi, being featured in Yoga Journal is like a designer being featured in Vogue. All this attention is well deserved. Cunningham’s regulars credit their yoga practice for increased flexibility and mo-

bility as well as injury prevention and better focus on the field. “It helps their bodies, but it also helps them to relax because they have such strenuous schedules,” Cunningham says. Athlete or not, everyone can benefit from a consistent yoga practice. No yoga experience? Cunningham recommends her beginner and restorative classes as well as the yoga for athletes sessions. Check out Flow Yoga Studio’s weekly class schedule at www.flowyoga-studio.com Feeling “meh” about your practice? On Broadway, Inc. plans special event for downtown visitors By Meghan Diemel

Wine and retail therapy with your best girlfriends or a significant other – what could be better?

Winter Wine Walk On Broadway Fridays in December the 5th, 12th & 19th, 5-9pm for more information visit www.onbroadway.org

That was exactly the thinking of Tara Gokey, executive director for On Broadway, Inc. in downtown Green Bay. The inaugural Winter Wine Walk On Broadway will take place over three Friday evenings – 5-9 p.m. on December 5, 12 and 19 – and will serve as a way for the Broadway District to encourage people to visit the downtown area and enjoy the merriment of the holiday season. “Our focus has always been to create retail-based events that will draw people into the small businesses in order to stimulate growth in the local economy and have people experience the Broadway district, separate from our popular events,” Gokey explains. “We want to actually bring them into the store fronts.” A map will be available from participating businesses, as well as online at www.onbroadway.org. Local and regional wines will be available – including Captain’s Walk, von Stiehl, LedgeStone Winery and Mona Rosa – and each week people will have the opportunity to try different wines. Nicole Zich, owner of Sassy Girl in the Broadway District, says she thinks the Winter Wine Walk is a great way to get people to tour the Broadway District and visit businesses they may not have been to before. “It’s a really great way to showcase how fun and unique our district is,” says Zich. “I love the events we have in the district and I participate in all of them. This was an easy decision. Women, wine and shopping – great combination. What a fun way to do some holiday shopping while enjoying wine from our local wineries. You don’t get that kind of unique experience at the mall.” Volunteers 21 years of age and older are also welcomed for this event, explains Gokey. “We are always looking for ways to help people to plug into the downtown community,” she says. “The Winter Wine Walk is a great opportunity to talk to people you don’t know, get to know the retail space that you’ll be volunteering with, and you can help pour samples of wine for the wineries. It’s a great way to get involved at

a totally different level with the downtown community.” The Broadway District will also be home to other holiday-focused events, including s’more roasting and Santa visits at Somewhere in Time Antique Mall to benefit St. John’s Homeless Shelter. Businesses will also run specials all month long.

“It’s a romantic and urban and vibrant atmosphere to spend some time in during the holidays,” says Gokey. “You can make reservations at the restaurants and come down to the wine walk. There are so many gems that we have down here, and a wine walk in particular allows us to amplify that.” “It’s a great opportunity to hang out with your friends downtown or have a date night with your significant other as you stroll the district, see Santa and roast some s’mores,” she adds. “If you love wine, and you love being part of a vibrant scene, come down and enjoy the tastes of season in this historic Broadway District.”

Not to mention delicious! Here are a few tips for throwing your finest (and merriest) holiday soirée this season.

Oh, the dresses! Champagne Silk This silk taffeta dress is swathed in a dreamy champagne and accented with rhinestones that sparkle sublimely. We love the comfortable pockets tucked into the pleats. Pair with cherry red heels for a festive ensemble. Dress ($169.99) and coat ($1,299) from Furs & Clothing of Distinction, Green Bay. 14K white gold diamond necklace ($2,490), 14K white gold diamond stud in halo jacket earrings ($8,925) and ring (prices vary) from Meyer Jewelers, Green Bay.

Silver Sparkle This fancy frock is drop dead gorgeous, shimmering in row upon row of silver sequins and tying with a grey ribbon. We love it with a romantic crown braid, a sweet hairstyle to match such whimsical attire. Dress ($49.99) and fur stole ($799) from Furs & Clothing of Distinction, Green Bay. Blue topaz sterling silver earrings ($495) and ring ($450) from Meyer Jewelers, Green Bay.

Red Sheath This sheath is red-hot, quite literally! A fitted yet f lattering silhouette with little details that make it all the more beautiful. Petal like sleeves and an open keyhole neckline are just two. We love this dress paired with a glittered heel, the perfect combination for a sophisticated evening of holiday parties. Dress ($328) and jacket ($325) from Azure, De Pere. 14K white gold diamond earrings ($3,695) and 18K white gold diamond bracelet ($6,100) from Meyer Jewelers, Green Bay.

Black and Gold Separates This skirt and blouse combo is a stylish and stunning pairing. The blouse tucks into a gossamer feathered waist and is further enchanted with a matte gold sequined skirt. We think it’s party perfect paired with a beaded head band worn over long locks. Top ($370), skirt ($158) and fur cape ($350) from Azure, De Pere. Necklace ($1,120) and ring ($575) from Meyer Jewelers, Green Bay. 34 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | NOVEMber 2014

We paired our chokes and cheese with two delicious red wines from Wine Cellar in De Pere. Pedroncelli cabernet sauvignon is a rich flavored wine with raspberry and plum notes that make a perfect complement to the savory dip. Trentadue Old Patch Red is a bistro style zinfandel blend with jammy berry essences and a peppery finish that stands up to hard cheese flavors like parmesan.

Break

ieme By Meghan D

As a parent or grandparent, it seems like only seconds separate the cleanup of Thanksgiving dinner or the unwrapping of holiday gifts before the first cries of “We’re bored!” are heard during holiday breaks. Don’t let the “boredom” chorus win! Get the kids out over vacation with these fun activities.

44 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | NOVEMber 2014

“Y” not give the YMCA a try?

Sherri Valitchka, director of marketing and communications with the Greater Green Bay YMCA, says in addition to their ongoing Community Swim and Tuesday and Saturday family nights during the school year, there are also affordable special events planned over both holiday breaks. “During National Family Week November 23-29 we have a

free admittance to any of the four Green Bay Ys with the donation of one canned good or nonperishable food item,” explains Valitchka. “We will have at least one family-focused activity/event each day at each of our Ys, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day when we are encouraging families to get out and do the Turkey Trot.” (Learn more at festivalfoodsturkeytrot.com.) Families can also celebrate New Year’s Eve with the Y. US Bank Eve will be held on December 31, including three ‘parties’ at area YMCAs: the Downtown YMCA from 3 to 5 p.m., East Side YMCA from 6 to 8 p.m., and West Side YMCA from 6 to 8 p.m.

Grab your skates and hit the ice!

Nothing says winter break quite like an afternoon of ice skating! The Ameriprise Ice Rink on City Deck is open November 22 through February 21, with staffed hours on Fridays from 4 - 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 - 10 p.m. Though it’s closed Christmas Day, additional special holiday hours include 12 - 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve; 12 - 10 p.m. on December 26 and 27; 12 - 8 p.m. December 29 and 30; 12 - 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve; and 12 - 8 p.m. on New Year’s Day. It’s just $2 for admission, and an additional $3 for skate rental. There is open skating during non-staffed days. The hockey rinks in Green Bay will be prepared when the weather conditions permit, and skating is free. Visit greenbaywi.gov/parks for updated rink information.

Kick up the fun at the Kroc Center

The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Green Bay offers day passes – $5 for youth 10-18 years of age, $10 for adults 19-61, and $20 for a family – explains Aubrey Brennan, marketing director. “Day passes give our guests an opportunity to make use of the Aquatics Center including the lazy river, tube slide and splash play area, our NBA-sized gym, use of the Fitness Center for those over the age of 16 and group fitness classes for not only individuals, but family classes as well,” says Brennan. “Day passes also give the user access to the game

room, and RJ’s Depot providing child watch services for up to two hours per day for a small additional fee.” All-day camps will also be offered during the winter school breaks where kids can spend the day at the Kroc Center. Visit gbkroccenter.org for more information and pricing.

Don’t let the holiday slide happen

Debi Schmidt, a kindergarten teacher at Fairview Elementary in the Pulaski School District has some advice for parents worried about a “slide” in retention of skills over holiday break. “During holiday breaks I send home books for kids to read or favorites that parents can read to their child,” she explains. “It shouldn’t be a battle to read but rather an enjoyable time to spend with your child.” If the weather isn’t so favorable, Schmidt says that younger children can do things like use Playdoh with alphabet and number stamps and use shaving cream on the kitchen table to practice letters and numbers. Playing “I Spy” is also popular – choose something and give your child clues by color, beginning sound, beginning letter, etc. “Most important is to make it fun and not a chore,” adds Schmidt.

We just can’t “Let It Go” yet!

What better way to cap off an enjoyable winter break but to celebrate with a “Frozen” themed event at the Brown County Central Library! On Saturday, January 3, there will be live performances from “Anna” and “Elsa” from the popular Disney movie, followed by a meet-and-greet. There will be a variety of stories, games, crafts and hands-on activities related to ice, snow, snowmen, and snowf lakes for kids of all ages. Be sure to bring your camera to capture all the “frozen” fun. at NAMIWalks 2014 photos and text By Mike Peters

An unseasonably mild autumn day greeted more than 300 participants in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Brown County’s annual event NAMIWalks, held at Green Isle Park in Allouez. The organization brings much needed hope and healing to those who suffer from mental illness and their loved ones through a variety of programs, classes and support groups. Even though this year’s walk is over, the event website namiwalks. org/browncounty is still accepting donations through November 27. To find out more about NAMI Brown County please visit namibrowncounty.org or call 920-430-7460. Check out facebook.com/youmag for more photos from this event. 46 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | NOVEMber 2014
