Be Safe While Enjoying The Fair
A favorite part of the fair for most kids and many adults, particularly those who don’t live on farms or have close contact with farm animals is to visit the barns to see the animals on exhibit. The Oconto County Fair along with state animal health and public health officials want to be sure every fair visitor knows how to protect themselves while enjoying the animals at the fair.
The fair follows all requirements of the state veterinarian to insure that exhibit animals are healthy. Veterinarians inspect pigs before they come to the fair to check for signs of illness on the home farm and the superintendents monitor all animals while they are at the fair. Due to the poultry influenza outbreak earlier this year, all poultry exhibitors must certify that there have been no instances of sick birds in their home flocks prior to the fair. Exhibit animals suspected of being sick are checked by the fair veterinarian and are sent home if found to be sick. Exhibitors work continuously to insure their animals are clean and stalls/pens are maintained to stay clean and dry.

Extra wash stations are located near the animal areas to make it convenient for visitors to have access to water, soap, and towels. The Oconto County Fair encourages all fair visitors to enjoy the fair animal exhibits. Doing so responsibly by following the guidelines above greatly reduces the chance of exposure to pathogens that can lead to illness.

2015 Fairest of the Fair Jenna Herzog
With a big smile on their faces, both Jenna Herzog and Macy Franti were selected as Senior Fairest and Junior Fairest of the Fair respectively. Herzog and Franti have both been Oconto County Fair exhibitors, and will now have the opportunity to promote an event that has been so important to them. This was the second year that both the Senior Fairest and Junior Fairest of the Fair programs were combined into one with a day filled with interviews, impromptu questions, and public speaking opportunities at the Gillett High School Auditorium.

Her goal is to enroll in college and obtain a degree in Health and Wellness. She enjoys exhibiting cattle and her quilts at the Oconto County Fair. Jenna wanted to serve as the Senior Fairest of the Fair because she felt it was a great opportunity to expand her love for the fair. She was sponsored by South River Farms--Jon and Mary Herzog. The other Senior Fairest of the Fair contestant was Priscilla Van Den Elzen.
Macy Franti, daughter of Danyell and Erin Franti of Gillett. She attends Gillett Elementary School and is involved in basketball, 4-H, and the science fair. Macy enjoys playing sports and being very creative with art. She has been a part of Ag Olympics and has entered projects into the Oconto County Fair. Macy wanted to serve as Junior Fairest of the Fair so she could be a role model for younger kids like the current Senior and Junior Fairest of the Fair have been for her this past year. Macy’s sponsor is her parents Danyell and Erin Franti. Other Junior Fairest of the Fair contestants included Amber Jo Farrar and Tani Lucht. The contestants and the judges received baskets filled with gifts donated by local businesses and Fairest of the Fair Committee members. The Senior Fairest also receives a $500 scholarship from the Fair Board. A big thank you goes to all of the following Fairest of the Fair Program sponsors who have donated for the contest and continue to support the Fairest of the Fair program throughout the year: Oconto County Fair Board, Fairest of the Fair Committee Members, G.G.’s Cheese Mart, Gillett School District, Gillett Shell,

Both the outgoing Senior Fairest, Kallie Rank, and Junior Fairest, Lauren Herzog, were able to give closing remarks about how the Fairest of the Fair program has given them opportunities to grow throughout the year. After the contest was complete, the judges made their decision and the winners were announced. Both Jenna Herzog and Macy Franti will serve as the official hostess of the 2015 Oconto County Fair, August 20th-23rd at Zippel Park in Gillett. Both Fairests will promote our fair before and afterwards at various community events. The Senior Fairest will also compete for the title of Wisconsin State Fairest of the Fair in January. Congratulations to all our contestants this year on a job well done, and good luck to Jenna and Macy in the year ahead!
