What was your most memorable assignment and favorite photo of 2011?

“I have many favorite photos. If I had to pick one, it would have to be the “Big Mouth Bass.”

“The most memorable assignment I covered in 2011 was the Hoepner family maple syrup operation near Lomira in March.

“It’s something a person doesn’t see every day.

“At the time, I was reading ‘Little House in the Big Woods’ by Laura Ingalls Wilder with my son, both of us experiencing the book for the first time.

“My most memorable assignment of the year was in December when covering the Salvation Army distribution. I witnessed the real meaning of Christmas. A lady in a wheelchair received her gifts and then wept. I didn’t take photos of that moment. I was truly moved.”

How has the Web and online photography and galleries changed or enhanced your approach to photography? “The Web, online photos and galleries have changed my approach in the sense that I take more photos than I ever have before. “Almost everyone likes to feel like they are part of the event, even though they might not have been there. The Web allows me to share numerous photos with the public. I realize that people like to view galleries to see if they see themselves or others they know. “Online is like an open book. We may be able to publish only one photo from an event in the paper, but we can show a timeline of photos on the Web. “I love photography; that will not change”

What do you carry? What kind of gear do you use? “I carry a backpack with the Nikon of choice for the day, along with a 200 lens, wide angle and standard.

“Also, I always have “hot hands” during the winter to help keep the batteries warm on the coldest days, a notebook, pens, pencils and Sharpies, cloths to wipe the lenses and extra batteries.”

“We had reached the part of the story explaining in great detail about maple syrup production in Wisconsin during the late 1800s. I found it fascinating that little had changed in more than 100 years.”

How has the Web and online photography and galleries changed or enhanced your approach to photography? “The Internet continues to expand in its importance to consumers of news and information. “To remain relevant as journalists and stewards of First Amendment rights in our community, we must produce more content than ever before while continuing to uphold the highest ethical standards of accuracy.”

What do you carry? What kind of gear do you use? “Several pens, pads of paper, rubber bands, tape, batteries, two digital single-lens reflex cameras (one of which can take video), one wide-angle lens, one telephoto zoom lens and an audio recorder (for making audio slideshows). “This is a well-rounded backpack/kit bag for photojournalists.”

Patrick Flood What was your most memorable assignment and favorite photo of 2011? “My most memorable assignment was the standoff and officer shooting that occurred on March 20. “Free-lance photographer Doug Raflik and I tried to get angles from opposite ends of the scene, but I was stopped three blocks away for safety. I started working southward when Raflik called and said he had an angle. “Just before I got to his position, gunfire erupted. I raced around the corner of a building (peeking out first) and started shooting as officers were putting down covering fire to extract people trapped in the basement of the home where the shooter was. “I stayed at the scene until we heard on the scanner that

the shooter was dead, then raced back to the office to process photos. I have never been that nervous at a shoot, but I was proud of the job I was doing.”

How has the Web and online photography and galleries changed or enhanced your approach to photography? “I started in the days of film. You shoot 10 to 15 frames for a shoot, thinking more about each shot because it has got to work. “Now, I can bang away 300 frames, pick the few I like, but still post the average ones (in my opinion) so someone can see more of the event, or grandma in Arizona can see the grandkids at the football game — shots that

probably wouldn’t run in the newspaper.”

What do you carry? What kind of gear do you use? “We have a Nikon D300s that does video, but it has an X1.5 crop factor, meaning that any lens you put on it is multiplied by 1.5. “That’s great for reaching out with a telephoto, but it’s hard to get a truly wide shot. “So my favorite camera we have is the Nikon D3. Made in 2008, it’s got millions of shutter actuations on it (clicks), but is still the greatest camera I have used so far. A 1735 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 are the meat and potatoes lenses I use most all the time.”

Or is it the other way around? We define community. It’s worth considering, but in the scheme of things, all that really matters is we somehow belong. This collection of photos in the Community section of Revue represents a variety of ways we fit together in this little corner of the world. Community in a larger sense is the tie that binds “us” — our families, our churches, schools, neighborhoods and civic organizations. We view our readership area as Fond du Lac, Dodge and Calumet counties. For the most part, our communities fall within that geographic area.

But times are changing. Today, community transcends

restrictive geographic areas because of the power and scope of the Internet and other vehicles of communication. Former residents, soldiers and “snowbirds” reach out to us for news and images of their communities from across the country and around the world. Photos are available to faraway members of the community through The Reporter website and in photo galleries arranged by topic and event, just as they are easily accessible to those nearby in the community. The Community section of Revue stirs memories and emotions, and sparks smiles and even tears. The photographs in these first pages celebrate who we are, how we live, what we find interesting and why we have chosen to make our home here. For many, it is the connection that nourishes us and holds us together.

In the pages that follow, you’ll find a woman kissing a sturgeon, a snake peering into the mouth of a teenage girl at Walleye Weekend, kids delightfully being kids, a poignant moment at a photo exhibit honoring soldiers, a tiny dog driving a truck, a bagpiper in silhouette at a memorial service, and a simple cup of steaming coffee at a downtown shop. And for a reason I can’t explain, a stalk of prairie grass in sharp focus ranks among my favorites. In the background is the barely discernible face of Connie Ramthun, a person who preserves prairies in our little corner of the world. Community speaks to all of us, no matter where we live. Most of us have had some experience with studio photography.

We’ve worn our best outfit, fixed our hair and makeup just so. Posed just right under ideal lighting conditions. Those portraits hang proudly over our mantels. News photography couldn’t be further from the contrived family portrait. Most of the images in this section were taken by photojournalists who minutes before had no idea the assignment was in their future. This is largely breaking news: the accidents, fires, a man with a globe who wandered into town, an officer shooting that shattered a dismal Sunday morning in March. Photojournalists must get to the scene quickly, and often that means parking some distance away when roadblocks have been set up, then running the rest of the way, gear in hand.

In a few moments they have to size up what is in front of

them and start shooting. The only available light may be the headlights of an overturned vehicle or the flames from a fire glowing in the night sky. They must intrude without intruding on pain and sorrow. They must capture the images that the public wants and needs to see, that officials will learn from, that historians will teach from. When workers went on strike against a state budget proposal that would strip them of their collective bargaining abilities, we sent our photographers to Madison. Not only did they navigate the tent city that surrounded the Capitol, they were tasked with finding people from Fond du Lac that made up this city. While it was snowing. While emotions were running high. While police stood nearby ready to arrest anyone who got out of hand. There was the photo “moment” from the shooting of Fond du Lac Police Officer Craig Birkholz when officers stormed

the home to rescue those trapped inside. There was also the pain and sorrow on the faces of those who lined Main Street days later for the funeral procession of that officer. Some months later, they were there to capture the ceremony that added Birkholz’s name to the memorial monument at Hamilton Park. The “news” isn’t always tragic. There is the photo that captures the joy and hope on the faces of high school students banding together to raise money to fight cancer. There are the lines in the face of a nursing home resident as she celebrates a “high tea” in honor of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. And of course the media circus driven by one man’s obsession with Big Macs. As you look at these images, you’ll get a good look at the local news of 2011. Our staff members have a warm spot in their photographic hearts for scenic beauty, humorous, thought-provoking and poignant images that trigger an appreciative response. Those images often are pleasant surprises for photographers in the midst of a humdrum or hectic day. They often become the images that delight our readers and boost their spirits. Each year, the photos featured in Seasons rank among my favorites, simply because they are uplifting and showcase the talents of people we too often take for granted.

Photographers Patrick Flood, Justin Connaher and Aileen Andrews were drawn to these images…“just

because”…while on their way to assigned “shoots” or when they found rare free time to search for images readers might appreciate. We call this section Seasons for a number of reasons — the time of year, the type of event, the mood of the moment. Among the images in Seasons that brought a smile to my face were Daisy the bloodhound (a face that only a dog lover could appreciate) and Curt Strutz the Bassmeister (a face that only a bass fisherman could understand). There also are the soothing images of autumn in the Fond du Lac area — fall color in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, a harvest of wind and hay, a ribbon of highway awash in autumn and wild grape in a downtown parking lot at the end of its summer cycle.

Lake Winnebago, the outdoor recreational destination of tens of thousands of people in the Fond du Lac area, once again yielded examples of gorgeous sunsets and birds on the wing. In addition to the individual print images, photographers assemble galleries of photos from events throughout the year. Galleries are popular on The Reporter’s website and account for millions of “views” during the year. This particular section of so-called “old-fashioned” print images takes readers on a visual tour of Fond du Lac, Dodge and Calumet counties, where the bulk of our readers make their homes. As we’ve said before, it’s a tour that’s good for the soul. Michael Mentzer is The Reporter’s managing editor.

Ah, those school pictures. It’s amazing how they can turn up, out of nowhere. You’re thinking back to the morning your mom cut your bangs crooked and made you put on that ugly shirt and now you are forever memorialized on a grade school class photo making the rounds on Facebook. It’s mind-boggling how small our world has gotten as photos go “viral,” virtually circling the globe.

School settings are ripe with “moments of life” we can all relate to, from those first footsteps into the kindergarten classroom to the final march across the stage at graduation. They represent some of our fondest memories.

Our photography team knows how to tell rich stories through pictures: the first day of school, marching with the high school band, the excitement of homecoming, a slow dance at junior prom, saying goodbye — sometimes forever — to classmates who shared some of the best years of your life. Those timeless school scenes take us back to simpler days. While it may not be as sensational as breaking news, what’s going on in schools throughout Fond du Lac County and northeastern Dodge County could go unnoticed if it weren’t for The Reporter’s depth of coverage. We devote a front page of a section each Sunday to education topics because we know “Your Schools” is at the epicenter of the community.

Jim Croce sang “Photographs and Memories” 40 years ago. That sure rings true for high-school athletes. Photographs are memories in ugly uniforms.

yet another of him dribbling hard to the hoop, lefthanded, while being closely guarded. In all of them, he’s got teeth clenched, a look of determination on his face.

At least that’s how it was at my house with my mom. There wasn’t a photo that ran in our local weekly or daily of me, my brother or sister that she didn’t try to get a print.

The photos of me just happen to be from my one of my most memorable games, and one of my least memorable games. The most memorable is me making a tackle in a big win against Cudahy High School when I was a sophomore. The least memorable is me rebounding in our exit at the hands of Racine Horlick from the basketball playoffs my senior year.

A few of what she must have felt were the best ones still hang in my parents’ basement. There is the one of my brother blocking a shot on a Greendale player, another of my brother back to pass the football, and

Unless an athlete’s team went undefeated or winless, usually it’s difficult to remember scores or win/loss records. With a glance, however, athletes can look at a photo of themselves and say, “I remember that play.” What usually accompanies the memory is a feeling. Nostalgic for the glory days, an athlete appreciates those photos more and more as the years creep by. Here you go, area athletes, here are your future memories compliments of mom.
