My Fall Obsessions. In my mind, I can see a street in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. It’s autumn. The trees, glittering yellow, are a theater curtain for the sky. Leaves are strewn across the pavement on the cusp of decay, skittering when the wind comes. Now I’m at home. My soup pot rests in the drying rack. I can smell the candle I burn when my kitchen is clean and the lights are dim. Notes of red gala apple, juicy fig, eucalyptus, and fir balsam rise from the wax. I can hear the birds at the start of their fall migration and imagine the moment Photo by Mark Anderson. when my face is upturned in awe. They pump their wings through the sky over my house. They are brave and numerous and streaming past, calling out to their magnetic journey. I can taste beets from the garden that have been roasted with rosemary; bite into them, they’re equal parts dense and soft. They’re dirt and sweetness. Flavors, I can taste sour cabbage fried with apple bits and squash soup that’s lush and smooth. I can feel my house during a football game, hotter and louder, this energy. There is taco dip and burgers, the last of the garden tomatoes, an Oktoberfest beer, friends and family, not enough chairs, all adding to atmosphere of excitement. These are some of my fall obsessions. Find more here: Fashion you’ll long to wrap yourself into, page 16. A woman who makes other women her priority, Joan Johnson of the YWCA, page 8. OUTFITTING WOMEN FOR SUCCESS Johnson’s passion fuels the Women’s Empowerment Center STORY BY MEGHAN DIEMEL PHOTOS BY MIKE PETERS ON LOCATION AT THE YWCA, DOWNTOWN GREEN BAY HAIR AND MAKEUP BY DOREY VANCASTER OF SALON FIFTY FOUR, DOWNTOWN GREEN BAY
JOAN JOHNSON, director of the
Women’s Empowerment Center (WEC) at the YWCA of Greater Green Bay, is experiencing a wonderful convergence of career goals and her life-long passion for helping others. Johnson, who previously held positions in the private and public sectors, says most of her career has revolved around casting vision, building and leading teams, investing in people, improving programs, and marshalling resources toward an outcome. She says what she has learned and experienced in those roles is allowing her to feel confident, equipped, and energized to lead the WEC and make a difference by touching people’s hearts, which she feels truly effects change. “I have always had a passion for excellence, creativity, and making a difference, with a focus on building relationships at the heart of it all,” she explains. Her path to the role with the WEC was an unexpected one. She was volunteering as a mentor in the WEC when she learned, late in the process, that the director position was open. “I decided I would love the opportunity to lead the broader efforts of the department,” she says, “and it has turned out to be a perfect fit.” “Watching Joan in her role is the equivalent of seeing someone truly living their vocation,” states Kay Baranczyk, chief executive officer, YWCA. “She is absolutely aligning her gifts and passions with the needs of our community.” Often the women who come to the WEC for help have low self-esteem, in addition to limited employment history, 8 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | SEPTEMBER 2016

education, skills and financial resources. Johnson says she and her team of 35 volunteers help women develop skills and establish a work history, offer career coaching and mentoring, and host motivational and interactive empowerment classes. Computer classes expand job opportunities for the women,

while a support group helps women manage stress and develop coping skills. Life coaching is also offered, which provides the motivation necessary to improve their lives. Two of the hallmarks of the WEC, explains Johnson, are the Women’s Career Closet (WCC) and Children First Family Literacy program. The WCC offers women free clothes for interviewing and work wardrobes, which builds self-confidence. Through the Children First Family Literacy program, parents obtain their GED while their children receive early childhood education. “The WEC’s comprehensive approach goes beyond helping women ‘dress’ for success,” furthers Johnson. “We ‘outfit’ them for success – from the clothes, to career coaching, life coaching, literacy skills, and work experience … It is our programs working in combination.” Johnson says she values making a personal connection with each woman who walks through the doors, where they foster a judgment-free zone and everyone is welcomed and accepted. As Joan Johnson helps women in the greater Green Bay area become empowered, she’s been buoyed by her own support system at home, including daughter Aubrey, son Gentry, and husband Denver. “It can be overwhelming at times,” she explains, “but I stay focused on each individual woman who walks through our doors, knowing she deserves our very best efforts, regardless of the challenges around us.”
you spotlight
As the sole staff member of her department, Johnson stresses that none of what the WEC accomplishes could be done without her amazing team of volunteers, who have a shared passion to help others and further the work of the YWCA overall. She sees great momentum at the YWCA with a renewed sense of vibrancy and a strong vision to engage even more women in the community. “As a leadership team, we complement one another quite nicely,” adds Baranczyk. “Each of us brings a unique perspective as we work together to realize the vision we have for the YWCA. This is a distinct organization – offering services and programming, like the Women’s Empowerment Center, that simply would not exist if not for the YWCA.” Johnson says she personally feels most empowered when she embraces who she is and seizes opportunities to unleash her talents, skills, and passions. Having experienced work situations where she felt diminished versus empowered, and where her talents and competence were perceived as threats, and even where she was paid less because of her gender, she can relate to women who may have experienced similar injustices.
Empowerment Tips Johnson says she follows these tips to harness her own talent and silence the inner critic.
1. Believe in yourself – you have value; you are worth it; you matter! 2. Believe that you have the right to chart your own course – never stop dreaming. 3. Develop your mind – pursue education, hobbies, and interests that stimulate your thinking. 4. Take care of your body – exercise and eat healthy foods to feel better and live longer. 5. Feed your spiritual soul – whether it’s involvement in a religious community, joining a life coaching group, or carving out quiet time for reflection – nurture this important aspect of your being. 6. Ditch the superficial and the shallow – they belong in middle school. 7. Care less about what others think and more about becoming a person of integrity that you can respect – you will be happier and more fulfilled as a result. 8. Cultivate your relationships – for they are the substance of life.

We love being a part of that process. When this cycle is perpetuated – one woman empowering another – the effect is multiplied and becomes a powerful force. Together we can work toward women having an equal voice and equal opportunity in society. When that happens, everyone benefits. “We have the privilege through the WEC to facilitate this kind of change,” she adds. “One woman at a time.”
Landscape Photography Tips for Capturing Fall’s Beauty Find a point of interest.
It might be one slightly different tree trunk, a path winding through a forest, or a splash of gold on a flowering vine. Your goal is to lead the viewer there. Look for lines of light penetrating the canopy or one spot on the forest floor directly lit by the sun. Source: nationalgeographic.com
The Magic Hours. The best time to shoot
landscape photography is before and after either sunrise or sunset. Depending on weather, the window could be around 30 minutes to an hour long. You will get the most favorable lighting condition when the sun is lower, light is softer and often displays a subtle color warmth. This is why the hours after dawn and before dusk are known as the “magic hours.” Source: digitalphotographylive.com

Finding success with a franchise APRICOT LANE FULFILLS VERHEYDEN’S PASSION FOR RETAIL
STORY BY MEGHAN DIEMEL | PHOTOS BY MIKE PETERS
It’s a common notion that if you are doing something you love, it never feels like work. For Kim Verheyden, 29, her search for a more exciting and enjoyable career began while working as a finance manager for a large corporation. Feeling isolated and knowing something was missing in her life, she decided to leave her corporate job to follow her heart. From there, she and her husband Adam began exploring the possibility of owning a retail franchise. The path led her to Apricot Lane Boutique, a franchise of stores across the United States that focuses on women’s fashion. “I had worked at some boutiques in high school and college and loved the concept of Apricot Lane,” says Verheyden, a Green Bay native. “Even though it’s a franchise, every store is locally owned and every store does their own buying locally, so I get to choose what goes in my stores based on my customers’ feedback and input.” Verheydens opened the first store in Green Bay, in April of 2015. They then tackled the large task of becoming owners of Wausau’s Apricot Lane, which had been on the brink of failure. Since taking ownership in February of this year, Verheyden says they’ve been able to complete a full turn around with that location. 14 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | SEPTEMBER 2016
Their most recent endeavor, Eau Claire’s Apricot Lane, opened in early August. With three stores spaced out across 200 miles, Verheyden has to coordinate her efforts. She makes sure she has a physical presence in each store every week, holds weekly meetings for all three locations, and stresses the importance of communication to her team members. “I love working with my team of girls at the store,” she says. “I love coaching people and really help mentoring them to be the best that they can be. I want to be a good role model for them of what it’s like to run a business in your town and to be a leader.” Verheyden expects her employees to have a positive attitude and be engaged in the stores. They are involved in buying, in managing the stores, and coordinating events for the stores. “Fashion changes every month, so all my girls have to know what’s trending, what’s in style, what’s on Instagram, what’s on social media,” she states. Her plans for the future include expanding the stores’ online offerings. “I’m always about growth,” she adds. “I love the customers and I love our community. We’re all about getting whatever our customers truly want. It’s where I really found my true passion and calling.”

Approximately 500 people showed up to rock with the Cougars at the Green Bay Botanical Garden’s final Concerts in the Garden performance of the season. The concert series will return next year, and will someday take place in a new amphitheater that is expected to host a wide variety of music, theater and dance performances once finished. Construction is slated to begin in 2017, and a capital campaign is currently seeking donors to bring the amphitheater, and an associated Grand Garden, to fruition. To find out more, call 920-490-9457 or visit gbbg.org. Check out facebook.com/youmag for more photos from this event. 30 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you | SEPTEMBER 2016
