LYMOUTH — It may not have necessarily been expected, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt any less. After falling to eventual state runner-up Kaukauna 59-44 in a sectional final at Fond du Lac, the Plymouth boys basketball team was not ready for its season to be over. “They didn’t want to be done,” head coach Jason Duff said. “I think sometimes, you can get that feel from a team like, they want to win, but if it ended tomorrow life would go on and they’d be perfectly fine with that. It kind of seemed like last year’s team, they didn’t want to think about what would happen if they didn’t get to play anymore.” Entering last season, the Panthers were picked for third in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference, behind Two Rivers and Waupun. What Plymouth did instead, was go 12-2 and win the conference title, followed by a deep playoff run that included a thrilling, last-second win at home over Slinger and a tight 61-55 victory over No. 1-seed Beaver Dam in a sectional semifinal. “I think they felt like, they were confident and they believed in themselves in any game that they played,” Duff said. “I think they felt they had a chance against anybody.” But then came Kaukauna, with a trip to State on the line in a packed house in Fond du Lac.
ior guard Ethan Guske leads the way for the Golden Raiders, who also expect big things out of 6-4 freshman Davis Larson. 4. Ozaukee (16-10) — Stephen Street is a force inside, and Andy Richter and Colton Susen give the Warriors a strong backcourt and strong chance for a CLC title.
Girls 1. Oostburg (23-5) — The Dutch made it six straight trips to State last season, and with the talented duo of Maranda Huibregtse and Abby VanStelle back, they look poised to make it seven straight this year. 2. Sheboygan North (20-4) — The Golden Raiders
lost quite a bit of production from a solid group of seniors last year, but newcomers from a JV team that went 20-2 should help North stay near the top of the Fox River Classic Conference.
3. Plymouth (16-8) —

Early on, Plymouth tried to take away the Ghosts’ low-post game, to which Kaukauna responded by knocking down 3pointer after 3-pointer. In the end, the Ghosts hit seven 3s on the night. “We were just one game away from State,” senior guard Cory Unger said. “We didn’t even think we were going to make it that far even. We were so close, we know we can make it. No doubt last year is going to drive us.” This year, however, the Panthers have expectations. The Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook has them ranked No. 9 in Division 2 to start the season and tabbed the squad with 10
returning letter winners to win the EWC. “Our biggest challenge is handling expectations,” Duff said. “Can we handle success? Can we handle people patting us on the back and saying, ‘Hey you guys are pretty good, you guys going to go to State this year?’” That road to State is littered with obstacles, and difficult ones at that. Plymouth’s nonconference schedule features an impressive mix of solid Division 1 and Division 2 programs along with traditional smallschool powerhouses Oostburg and Randolph. The combined record of the Panthers’ eight non-conference opponents a
year ago was 127-71 (.641 winning percentage). “That was exactly by design,” Duff said. “Every nonconference game was done with a purpose. Even a school that’s smaller, is a school that consistently has a very competitive program. We play Oostburg, we play Randolph, and despite them being Division 3 or Division (5), these guys know they’re going to have to play well to win a game like that.” Past that, Plymouth’s postseason bracket features the likes of Ashwaubenon, Kaukauna, Pulaski, Seymour and West
With first-team All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference player Rachael Cecka back as well as honorable mention All-CLC guard Marissa Grapentine, the Panthers are the early favorites to grab the EWC crown.
4. Sheboygan South (1013) — A strong senior class, in-
cluding three four-year varsity players, should push South near the top half of the FRCC.
5. Howards Grove (25-2) — With six returning letter win-
ners from last year’s state qualifier, Howards should challenge Oostburg for CLC supremacy.

FOX RIVER CLASSIC CONFERENCE Boys
Sheboygan North 2011-12 record: 21-4, 13-3 FRCC (third) Coach: Tom Desotell, 36th year (577-211) Returning letter winners: Ethan Guske, 6-1 sr.; Dan Campion, 5-10 sr.; Kevin Lang, 6-0 sr.; Joseph Ethan Hameister, 6-1 Guske sr.; Ryan Brunmeier, 6-3 sr. Other prospects: Lucas Haese, 6-2 sr.; Dominic Mahn, 6-1 sr.; Dominic Butzen, 6-2 jr.; Michal Baca, 6-3 jr.; Noah Stengel, 6-1 jr.; Austin Scheib, 6-5 jr.; Jared Parise, 5-11 so.; Davis Larson, 6-4 fr. Outlook: The versatile
Guske will lead the charge for the Golden Raiders, who have won 40 games over the past two seasons. The 6-1 senior along with Hameister give North two solid returning starters
Girls
while senior Campion and freshman Larson are expected to play big roles this season. The Davis Raiders Larson don’t have much for size, but outstanding guard play and a tradition of success will help them compete for another top-half finish in the FRCC.
Schroeder, 6-3 sr.; Carter Amundsen, 6-0 jr.; Connor Harrison, 6-1 so. Other prospects: Matt Jamal Jackson, Schroeder 6-3 jr.; Jordan Jackson, 6-3 jr.; Cody McLaughlin, 6-2 jr.; Joey Schultz, 5-11 jr.; Tyler Zietz, 510 jr.; TJ Pitsch, 5-10 so. Outlook: After twostraight trips to the sectional final, the Redwings fell back a bit last season. Senior Matt Schroeder shot 35 percent from 3-point-range and averaged 6.8 points per game a year ago and Harrison, a sophomore, shots 3s at a 44-percent clip. With just three seniors on the team, a relatively young roster will look to return South to the upper half of the FRCC.
Sheboygan South 2011-12 record: 7-16, 5-11 FRCC (T-eighth) Coach: Tim Schultz, eighth year at South (77-84, 128-124 overall) Returning letter winners: Jake Jake Knuth, Knuth 6-3 sr.; Matt Schroeder, 6-1 sr.; Robbie
Garrett Renzelmann Sheboygan Press staff
Sheboygan North 2011-12 record: 20-4, 13-3 FRCC (T-second) Coach: Eric Spielman, first year (0-0) Returning letter winners: Taylor Dallmann, sr.; Connor Dlugopolski, sr.; Haley Fullerton, sr.; Erin Connor Maletzke, sr.; Dlugopolski CJ Usadel, jr. Other prospects: Lindsey Gosse, jr.; Macey Konter, jr.; Alysa Lutzke, jr.; Maddie Opie, jr.; Mackenzie Wolf, so.; Madison Wolf, so. Outlook: Spielman, who went 75-45 the last five years as the boys coach at Sheboygan Falls, takes over for Susie Runaas who won 158 games in nine seasons at North. The Golden Raiders return junior Usadel (10.1 points, 6.3 rebounds a game in 11-12), an honorable mention All-FRCC
selection as a sophomore. Also back is Dlugopolski, who was a spark off the bench last season. SophoCJ mores MacUsadel kenzie and Madison Wolf give North some size inside, and if the newcomers from a JV team that went 20-2 a year ago can adapt to the varsity game, expect to see North near the top of the FRCC standings once again.
Sheboygan South 2011-12 record: 10-13, 5-11 FRCC (T-ninth) Coach: Tyler Thomas, fifth year (31-60) Returning letter winners: Molly Burkard, sr.; Kami Feld, sr.; Kara Selk, sr.; Rachel Smith, sr.; Erika Trumm, sr.; Karlee Weimann, sr.; Kimberlee Weimann, sr.; Lauren Pfile, jr.
Other prospects: Ashley Wagner, sr.; Camber Posewitz, jr.; Sara Schrank, jr.; Briana Wojcik, Kimberlee jr. Weimann Outlook: With seven returning seniors, including three that have been on varsity since their freshman year, the Kara Redwings will Selk have plenty of experience to build off of last year’s 10-win season. Coach Thomas likes his team’s chemistry and work ethic, and if South can develop a go-to scorer, the Redwings have the potential to make some noise in the always tough FRCC. Junior RJ Lemmerman (6-7) and sophomore Ryan Lemmerman (6-6) give Cedar Grove some size inside while Logan Peterson (510) and Spencer Bares (6-1) will lead the perimeter. Woods (6-5), Schneider (6-4) and Meyer (6-3) give the Raiders nice size inside, and if the guards can develop into solid scoring threats, Kiel could be able to post a top-half finish in the EWC.

De Pere. “Going into that seed meeting, we’re going to be going up against some big obstacles,” Duff said. A key strength for this Plymouth team is its chemistry — several of the players have played together throughout middle school and high school — giving the Panthers a calmness on the court. “All of us have been playing together since we were young, a lot of us are from St. John the Baptist,” Unger said. “Chemistry and relying on each other (is our strength).” “It helps that we’ve been around with each other since pretty much kindergarten,” fellow senior Kevin Friedrichs said. “It also helps that we all play football, so we’re constantly with each other and we’ve felt success with each other in many sports for years. If someone needs to be picked up we’ll be there to pick them up.” “Our camaraderie, we know what everyone is going to be doing on the court,” senior Jordan Mueller added. “We’ve been playing together for so long.” But how will this team
handle success? What will happen if people begin to start talking about State perhaps a bit prematurely? “Just win one game at a time,” junior guard Kollin Neils said. “There’s bigger and better goals all the time, but those come later. Just keep improving every day. Always look to improve, even in practice.” “This team hasn’t done anything,” Duff said about his team’s mentality. “We’ve accomplished zero. Last year was last year, we haven’t done anything. That will continue to be our mantra, what have we done?” A positive for Duff is that many of these players played football, and have played with lofty expectations before. “It shows that we’ve played in a big game,” senior Owen Henriksen said. “You still have to have nerves, you’re nervous before the big game. But we’ve had that experience.” “They have a desire to be great,” Duff said. “Now whether we’ll be great or not, that’s to be determined. We talk about that a lot, not just settling for mediocrity, and for what some people might say that is your limit. We want to push through that.”

CENTRAL LAKESHORE CONFERENCE Girls
Cedar Grove-Bel. 2011-12 record: 12-12, 6-10 CLC (sixth) Coach: Nate DePagter, third year, first at Cedar Grove (18-24 overall) Returning letter winners: Ashley Weavers, sr.; Alyssa Sauer, sr.; Alyssa Schmitt sr.; Steph Dahlke, sr.; Alex Buechler, sr.; Lydia Legler, jr.; Ashli von Heimburg, so. Other prospects: Kaylee Juhasz, sr.; Halie Schieffer, sr.; Abby Vrubley, jr.; Shelby Bucher, jr.; Brooke Weiss, jr.; Kasie Feind, jr. Outlook: The Rockets will rely on their depth, with seven seniors on the roster as well as returning junior Legler and returning sophomore von Heimburg. Schmitt and Sauer will lead the scoring punch, giving the Rockets a shot to contend for a top-half finish in the CLC.
Elkhart Lake-Glen. 2011-12 record: 13-11, 9-7 CLC (fourth)
Coach: Don Kulow, 20th year (239-202) Returning letter winners: Mikayla Scholten, 5-9 sr.; Emily Grunewald, 5-4 sr.; Ashley Pfeifer, 5-4 jr.; Kelly Theel, 5-4 jr.; Aryanna Klemme, 5-4 jr. Other prospects: Mariah Ausloos, 5-8 so.; Emma Feldmann, 5-9 fr.; Emily Holzmann, 5-3 fr.; Rachael Flora, 5-9 fr.; Becca Diestler, 5-4 fr. Outlook: Explosive guard Pfeifer is back after being named second-team All-CLC as a sophomore. If the younger players can develop quickly, Elkhart’s energy and versatility will give it another chance to finish near the top of the CLC.
Howards Grove 2011-12 record: 25-2, 15-1 CLC (T-first) Coach: Heidi Georgeff, sixth year (100-21) Returning letter winners: Hayley Rickmeier, 6-0 sr.; Payton Bramstedt, 5-5 sr.; Brittany Wehrmann, 5-10 sr.; Amber Reinemann, 5-7 sr.; Cassie
Robyn Bitter, 5-7 jr.; Natalie Schnell, 5-9 jr.; Haley Rautmann, 5-8 jr. Outlook: The Tigers return a strong class of six seniors from a team that went 25-2 and advanced to the Division 4 state tournament in March. If Howards can develop consistent scoring threats — its defense will keep it in many games — the Tigers could challenge for another CLC title.

Marver, 5-5- sr.; Jess Larson, 5-5 sr. Other prospects: Courtney Milz, 5-8 jr.; Nicole Mugan, 5-3 jr.; Erin Valenstein, 5-9 jr.; Taylor Benninghaus, 5-10 jr.;
2011-12 record: 6-16, 3-13 CLC (eighth) Coach: Matt Bayens, third year (17-26) Returning letter winners: Molly Misfeldt, sr.; Rachel Maggi, sr.; Mari-Kathleen Marzano, sr.; Alexis Rodriguez, sr.; Kari Heins, sr. Other prospects: Adrienne Ahlborg, so.; Lauren Kelm, fr.; Amanda Egbert, fr.; Isabelle Heins, fr.; Amanda Meyer, fr. Outlook: A solid core of returning seniors will be Kohler’s
strength this season, along with post play and athleticism. If the underclassmen can mesh with the seniors, the Blue Bombers could see some success in the always-tough CLC.
Oostburg 2011-12 record: 23-5, 15-1 CLC (T-first) Coach: Lisa Immel, fifth year (92-18) Returning letter winners: Abby VanStelle, 6-1 sr.; Jocelyn Stemper, 5-8 sr.; Maranda Huibregtse, 5-8 jr.; Maria Huibregtse, 5-8 jr. Other prospects: Kimberly Wilterdink, 5-8 jr.; Katie Bonnett, 5-8 jr.; Shannon Boldt, 5-8 jr.; Erin Bartenstein, 5-9 jr.; Jaidyn Hranicka, 6-0 jr.; Brittany Gabrielse, 5-7 so. Outlook: Oostburg returns 6-1 senior VanStelle and 5-8 junior Maranda Huibregtse, both all-conference players a year ago. That duo should form a solid inside-outside combination, along with athletic guards Stemper and Ma-
ria Huibregtse. The Dutch will look to make their seventh straight trip to State.
Ozaukee 2011-12 record: 7-16, 5-11 CLC (seventh) Coach: Lee LeMahieu, 31st year (448-200) Returning letter winners: Katie Bares, 5-3 sr.; Mickey Burns, 5-5 sr.; Katie Lippe, 5-6 sr.; Emily Thome, 5-7 sr.; Lizzie Janke, 5-5 jr.; Bailey Johnson, 5-5 jr.; Becca Paulus, 5-9 jr.; Jessika Dieringer, 5-5 so. Other prospects: Morgan Bichler, 5-7 jr.; Kaylee Klopp, 5-5 jr.; Brooke Bares, 5-4 fr. Outlook: With eight returning letter winners, including second-team All-CLC pick Janke, the Warriors appear to be on an upswing after a rough couple of seasons. If the Ozaukee can take another step forward, it may be in the race for a high finish in the CLC. See CLC GIRLS, Page B8

CLC boys
Ross, 5-11 sr.; Justin Fay, 5-6 sr.; Jesse Luotio, 6-4 jr.; Andrew Bruder, 6-1 jr.; Evan DeBroux, 6-4 fr. Outlook: The Rams lost quite a bit of production from graduated seniors Evan Rathke (16.3 ppg), Justin Lunde (14.3 ppg) and Logan Armstrong (10.3 ppg) from a team that won 15 games and finished in the middle of the CLC. Random may be young with three sophomores and one freshman, but all three sophomores were on varsity as freshmen, so they return with some experience. If this group can develop chemistry with the upperclassmen, the Rams could have another successful CLC campaign.

Patrick Mauer, 6-0 sr.; Andrew Telschow, 6-2 jr.; Parker Gabrielse, 6-1jr.; Jake Hurlbutt, 6-2 jr. Other prospects: Tyler Chaloupka, 5-9 jr.; Kyle Swart, 6-6 jr.; Justin Molter, 6-5 jr.; Josh Smies, 5-11 jr.; Joe Smies, 5-11 jr.; Lucas Meerdink, 5-9 so. Outlook: The Flying Dutchmen lost a four-year starter in Alex Stecker and a three-year starter in Brad Prinsen from a team that went 20-5 a year ago. But Oostburg does return guard Tyler Hartmann (6-1) and forward Josiah VerVelde (6-9), who can cause headaches for opponents inside, along with six other players. One of the favorites to win the CLC, the Dutch have averaged nearly 20 wins a season for the last 10 years (19.9).
Ozaukee 2011-12 record: 16-10, 10-6 CLC (fourth) Coach: Isaiah Ketterhagen, 10th year (87-111) Returning letter winners: Tyler Bares, 6-0 sr.; Alex Dieringer, 6-1 sr.; Stephen Street, 6-6 sr.; Colton Susen, 510 sr.; Andy Richter, 6-3 jr.; Owen Miller, 6-0 so. Other prospects: Hunter Radtke, 6-0 so.; Tony Street, 6-1 so. Outlook: With just eight players on the roster, Coach Ketterhagen will look for production out of his six returning

letter winners, including four seniors. Stephen Street (6-6) is back after averaging 8.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2.2 blocks and 3.7 assists a game last year. Outside of Street, however, no one on the roster is over 6-3. If the Warriors can develop consistent scoring, they lost the school’s all-time scoring leader in Eric Hartnett to graduation, they could contend for a high finish in the CLC.
Random Lake 2011-12 record: 15-8, 9-7 CLC (fifth) Coach: Steve Murphy, fifth year at Random (35-54, 214183 overall) Returning letter winners: Alex Rathke, 6-2 sr.; Dylan Svoem, 5-11 sr.; Andy Fechter, 6-3 jr.; Nic Horning, 6-0 so.; Logan Martin, 5-10 so.; Aaron Rathke, 6-2 so. 2011-12 record: 4-19, 2-14 CLC (T-eighth) Coach: Brett Flipse, 16th year (211-151) Returning letter winners: Andy Koerber, 6-4 sr.; Kyle Stecker, sr.; Garret Klompenhouwer, 6-0 sr.; BJ Braaksma, 5-5 sr.; Patrick Bolden, 5-9 sr.; Bradyn Otte, 5-5 jr.; Josh Stecker, 6-0 jr.; Caleb Kelley, 510 so. Other prospects: Graham VerVelde, 6-2 so. Outlook: The Eagles possess some young playmakers in junior Josh Stecker (13.8 ppg) and sophomore Caleb Kelley (8.6 ppg). With eight returning players, Christian will have decent experience once it hits the CLC circuit. If some of the younger players that were on
2011-12 record: 19-5, 11-3 EWC (second) Coach: Jake Frohling, first year (0-0) Returning letter winners: Jacob Tenpas, 6-2 sr.; Matt Wilke, 6-1 jr. Other prospects: Jake Hucke, 5-9 sr.; Will Meyer, 6-1 sr.; Connor Clark, 6-1 sr.; Jorrele Rivera, 6-4 sr.; Ryan Halverson, 5-11 sr.; Sean McKinster, 5-11 sr.; Riley Schueffner, 5-11 sr.; Nate Heili, 6-4 jr.; Mike Raeder, 6-0 jr.; Brady Mauer, 6-0 jr.; Nick Peterson, 5-11 jr.; Jacob Musil, 5-5 jr. Outlook: The loss of Zach Van Engen (18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds per game) and Bobby Musil (12.3 points, 2.3 rebounds) to graduation will be tough to replace for the Falcons. Returning starters Tenpas and Wilke give Falls a solid 1-2 punch, but developing third- and fourth-scoring options from a batch of players light on varsity experience will be key if the Falcons want to finish in the top-half of the EWC again.

athleticism on the roster, the Panthers shouldn’t have much trouble contending for a second-straight EWC title.
2011-12 record: 25-4, 15-1 CLC (first) Coach: Nick Verhagen, first year (0-0) Returning letter winners: Ben Leibham, 6-4 sr.; Phil Leibham, 6-0 jr.; Tyler Zastrow, 5-9 jr.; Jeff Hess, 5-11 jr.; Jacob Jurss, 5-11 so. Other prospects: Ryan Scheele, 6-3 jr.; Taylor Zastrow, 6-0 jr.; Nathan Hasenstein, 5-11 jr.; Tyler Maxon, 5-11 jr.; Jacob Ames, 6-3 jr.; Eric Puksich, 5-10 jr.; Justin Welsch, 5-11 jr. Outlook: The defending Division 5 state champion Crusaders will have to replace Sam Dekker, one of the greatest area players of all-time, and coach Todd Dekker, who was on the sidelines for 17 years at Lutheran. Despite a roster that features just one senior, juniors Phil Leibham, Tyler Zastrow, Hess and sophomore Jurss saw extensive action during Lutheran’s run to State a year ago. Coach Verhagen was an assistant on last year’s team, allowing for familiarity with the players despite this being his first season at the helm. If the Crusaders can find enough production to being to replace Sam Dekker, they should stay near the top of the CLC.
