CAPT. KERRY A. BERG
A salute to area veterans
We wish to welcome you to the inaugural edition of The Sheboygan Press’ “A Salute to Veterans,” presented on this Veterans Day. This is a compilation of more than 275 biographies of Sheboygan County veterans that were submitted to us by family members of veterans or by the veterans themselves. Each one tells the name, hometown, branch of service, years of service and the military highlights of each veteran, as presented by those veterans or family members. They include those from all branches of the armed forces who fought in wars and who served in peacetime. Some served in famous World War II battles, such as the Battle of the Bulge or in the South Pacific or flying missions over Germany. Some were sent to far away places such as Korea or New Guinea or Da Nang or Baghdad. Others served as company clerks or mechanics in the motor pool. All of their contributions are important to the safety and security of our country and all are being recognized for their service. During the weeks that the submissions rolled in, countless people called or wrote notes thanking us for doing such a project. The true thanks, of course, really belong to the men and women who served in our military through all these decades, and for their families who were kind enough to share their pictures and stories with everyone.
Sincerely, Bob Petrie and Dave Lubach, Editors, “A Salute to Veterans”

A brief history of
Veterans Day Veterans Day, celebrated on Nov. 11, is a national holiday set aside to honor the 24.9 million military veterans in the United States. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the holiday in 1919 as Armistice Day, so named for the signing of the armistice that ended World War I, on Nov. 11, 1918. According to the website usafederalholidays.com: “In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month, the world rejoiced and celebrated because after four years of bitter war, the Allied powers signed a ceasefire agreement with Germany at Rethodes, France on Nov. 11 1918. This brought World War I to a close. Nov. 11, 1919 was set aside as Armistice Day in the United State, to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during World War I in order to ensure a lasting peace.” According to “The History of Veterans Day,” President Wilson’s proclamation included these words:
both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
In 1953, in Emporia, Kan., people started referring to Armistice Day as Veterans Day to honor all veterans in that city, according to the website usafederalholidays.com. Congress later passed a bill introduced by a congressman from Kansas renaming the holiday as Veterans Day, which was signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower on May 26, 1954. In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared Veterans Day a federal holiday on the second Monday in November, but since 1978, the holiday has been celebrated on Nov. 11 each year. Government offices are closed, mail is not delivered and parades and memorial events to honor veterans are held in many cities across the country. This section is dedicated all of “To us in America, the reflections those in Sheboygan County who are serving or who have served in all of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those branches of the Armed Forces as a special salute to their military servwho died in the country’s service ice. and with gratitude for the victory,
