‘You don’t forget. You never forget.’ On a cool spring day in May of 2010, central Wisconsin’s Joe Karlen stood beneath a towering war memorial in Washington, D.C., and thought of his World War II brothers in arms. He thought about John Fisher, a Kentucky soldier who saved him from drowning on D-Day as he stormed the beaches of Normandy. And of Lee Storm, the soldier who half carried him to an aid station after Karlen was hit by German fire three times in one day. And the nameless, faceless soldier whose blood stained the sand red as Karlen stumbled over his body at Normandy. Karlen, who died in March of 2013 at age 93, was among the first group of World War II veterans to travel to Washington aboard a Never Forgotten Honor Flight. Those trips since have brought hundreds of veterans to the war and service memorials erected in their honor. Many, like Karlen, returned from the trip changed men. Some spoke to their wives, children and grandchildren for the first time ever about their war experiences. Others were so deeply moved by the experience that they collapsed in tears at the memorials. “Some of that stuff, you don’t want to remember,” Karlen told Gannett Central Wisconsin Media at the time. “But you don’t forget. You never forget. Those were bad days.” This week, another group of vets from World War II, Korea and Vietnam were aboard a Never Forgotten Honor Flight. Inside this special section, you can meet those soldiers, Marines, aviators and sailors. We salute them all.

Supporting Veterans’ Access to Hearing Aid Specialists “Fit To Serve” is a campaign dedicated to improving the hearing healthcare system for America’s Veterans. Our goal is to ensure timely access to high quality hearing health care for all Veterans. We are committed to serving the Veterans who have served all of us. Hearing loss and tinnitus are the two most common disabilities for Veterans. The effect of severe hearing loss or tinnitus can be extremely damaging to a Veteran’s health and quality of life. There are numerous social and physical problems that are created by this disability, such as isolation, psychological stress, dizziness, fatigue and depression. Hearing loss and tinnitus can also make it difficult to communicate with friends and family as well as maintain a career. These problems can be helped if Veterans are able to access proper hearing healthcare. However, because of increasing demand and limited capacity, the VA is simply unable to provide the proper care for our Veterans. Veterans with service-connected disabilities or who meet eligibility requirements have access to free hearing healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In order to obtain a hearing evaluation or hearing aid services, a Veteran must travel to a VA clinic or VA-contracted audiologist, with rare exception. However, because of long wait times, limited followup service, and significant travel distances, Veterans are often unable to receive the proper care they need. By integrating hearing aid specialists into the VA health system, we can drastically reduce the burden on Veterans to receive proper care while simultaneously increasing their quality of life.
