Get back to nature at state parks
Door County’s five state parks offer serenity, shorelines and much more — By Heidi Hodges, Advocate correspondent but with its stage within the park borders), a bike and water recreation rental stand and a great little nature center. You’ve got yourself a park that would take more than a single vacation to explore. The park’s main entrance is in Fish Creek. You know you have to come back after you buy your yearly state park sticker. But for now, let’s check out Newport State Park, near the tip of the Peninsula on the lakeside. This quiet, understated park is peaceful serenity. One special feature is shoreline on both Lake Michigan (including a fabulous sandy bathing beach) and pristine Europe Lake. There’s camping here, but it takes a hearty soul to backpack and trek everything in — there are no vehicle sites. Those who indulge will experience nature like it is meant to be experienced — raw. There’s one more park to explore, but we need some boat tickets. First, you hop on a ferry to Washington Island. Then, after a drive across the big island, you board the passengers-only Rock Island Ferry to Rock Island State Park. Suffice it to say, this is a remote location, and not one for the faint of heart. But the joy of sitting on a sand dune and hearing nothing but waves lapping the shore — no traffic noise whatsoever — is something you can’t imagine unless you try. Even better, come with camping gear. Sure, you have to tote in your food and tent. But it’s a small price to pay for the sense of adventure and isolation you will find here. Plus, you get to experience the grandeur of a thunderously towering boathouse. A renovated lighthouse at the tip of the island offers tours. There is so much of nothing to do here, you could keep busy doing it for a week or more (if you plan your food out carefully). Well, that’s it for the grand tour. It’s hard to choose, so you’ll probably have to come back again. And again. You wouldn’t want to miss a thing.

oor County is famous for its spectacular scenery and outdoor recreational opportunities. And nowhere is it better found then at the five state parks situated here. Five state parks. That’s a lot. But when you consider the unique beauty and fragile landscape that make up this special Peninsula, well, it starts to make sense. Travel up the Door Peninsula with me as I give you a whirlwind tour. I’d love to stop and dawdle at every one — but, perhaps, after taking a sneak peak at all of them, you can create your own itinerary. Our first stop is at Potawatomi State Park, just north of the city of Sturgeon Bay. In fact, from the park’s shore, you can see the city across the bay — it’s a lovely sight, filled with maritime aura. This quiet state park is home to a splendid campground nudged up against a mossy bluff, a boat launch to the waters of Sturgeon Bay, an observation tower with unbelievable views of islands and some of the nicest hiking around. Next stop — Whitefish Dunes State Park. The county’s newest state park, it is located on County WP off State 57, between Sturgeon Bay and Jacksonport. On the shore of Lake Michigan, it sports one of the finest stretches of beach in the Midwest. You also have a gentle ecosystem, filled with fragile flora. A superb nature center explains the area and provides some history. Archaeology on the site revealed hundreds of years of Native American fishing camps. Some of the finds are displayed. Now cross the county to the bay side and find Peninsula State Park. Peninsula has it all: campgrounds, beach, boat launches, an observation tower, hiking biking, canoeing ... Throw in a popular golf course, renovated historic lighthouse, concession stand and store, world-famous professional theater company in American Folklore Theatre (a separate entity from the park,

A guiding light for art on the Peninsula
Find you way to galleries with the 2010 Door Peninsula Arts Guide — By Jon Gast, contributng editor, Door County Magazine
I

’m sure most of us have faced a task that seems a bit too much; over our heads. That’s exactly the way I felt a few years back when Door County Publishing Company General Manager Gina Ward approached our magazine staff with the concept of producing an arts guide. Having lived and written in Door County for 30 years, certainly I felt somewhat prepared to handle a topic like art even if most of that time was spent covering sports. But I’ve rubbed shoulders with a few artists over the years, done a few stories and marveled at the quality of work our sizeable artist colony has produced. But could I assemble the editorial content to produce the kind of quality publication Ward had in mind and do justice to an arts community that is surprisingly bigger and more diverse than most people realized? I had to because, obviously, the Peninsula needed a guide. The result has been the Door Peninsula Arts Guide. “We had talked on and off about creating a visual, quality Arts Guide since about 2003, said Ward, whose passion for art was the driving force behind the creation of the publication. “Finally, in 2007, having several artists on our staff, with great enthusiasm we began planning. We started out with a small pocket size publication. Then
in 2008, we took survey feedback from the arts community and collaborated with artist and gallery owner Tim Nyberg on improvements.
Faith Frykman, an artist who worked at Door County Publishing and shared Ward’s particular passion for the project, was also instrumental in
the creation of the guide. “I saved Collector’s Guides, from Santa Fe, going back to my very first trip, in the late ’80s that we used for a top notch example, Ward further explained. “The Arts Guide is all inclusive, meaning that even if you do not run an ad and you are an artist showing on the Door Peninsula, your name will be in the index where your art will be referenced to a gallery. Frykman, who has since retired from Door County Publishing, and Nyberg have continued to be positive forces on improvements and have stayed on as artistic/design consultants. As for me, producing the editorial content wasn’t as daunting as I first had feared. It became clear the editorial was going to play a supporting role in a publication filled with spectacular advertisements, the required maps and detailed listings and index that make the piece a handy reference guide for the art hunter. Features like the ones this year on cover artist Jack Anderson and the late master IsAbel Beaudoin are offered to provide a splash of personality from an imposing list of artists who fill seven pages of index. Toss in an ample helping of calendar and a listing of the county’s non-for-profit galleries you’re ready to begin a winding journey through the county’s bountiful array of visual and performing arts offerings. Circulation has been increased by 5,000
copies to 50,000 with distribution through the galleries, the Door County Advocate office is Sturgeon Bay, the Door Reminder office in Sister Bay and at the Kewaunee News office in Algoma. Copies can also be found in Wisconsin locations outside of the county at places like the Wisconsin Museum of Art, in West Bend, the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madison. “We are very pleased with the 2010 edition, said Ward, who said this year’s guide has been enhanced with the addition of a fold-out map. “It is a wonderful effort from the artists, galleries and theaters, to our magazine employees. Our design guru, Bill Vandermause, put all the elements together, piece by piece and created this wonderful showcase of art on the Door Peninsula. We hope that this impressive graphic display of the arts attracts art enthusiast to come to the Peninsula. And, apparently, it has. “Recently one of our account executives, Kim Jacobs, received a call from a woman in Illinois that asked for copies of the 2010 arts guide, said Ward. “She was calling for a group of about 100 couples out of the Chicago area ... which travels together. They saw a copy of the 2009 Arts Guide in Chicago and decided to plan an arts vacation get-away to Door County in June. So far, 25 couples have signed up. I think it was the editorial that got them.
