July 15-16, 2016

Cost: $85

Please join us as we express ourselves in our journals with our experiences in words, poems, color, collages and more! Let our hearts and spirits bring forth joy and creativity as we share Our Stories with one another.

Kelly Niemi, mother of 5 and grandmother of 8, started journaling when she was in high

school. Journaling is theraputic for her. There is so much to write about in her life. Good and tough...journaling gives her the ability to express her feelings.

Sue Rodell,

woman, daughter, sister, wife, mother and child of God. She started journaling with a key-locked journal in her youth. She wrote on and off until college and picked it up again when she became a mother to find some release to the challenges of marriage and raising 4 children and trying to find herself. This workshop begins with registration at 7 p.m. on Friday. Concludes by 4 p.m. on Saturday. Cost includes a complimentary journal, two delicious meals and overnight accommodations.

My first experience with essential oils was prompted by researching into a possible aid or cure for a loved one. Lavender is my go to oil and I rarely catch myself without it nearby. A stroll through the forest awakens your senses with the fragrance of flowers and the loveliness surrounding you. This time of year always seems to fly by in a blur leaving us all left to wonder if we were genuinely able to soak it up to the fullest. Sue Safford, Inspiration To Chase Your Dreams BY BREANNA SPETH

PHOTOS BY LAURA SCHMITT HILLER

Dr. Susan Safford has wanted to be a dentist since age 14, and at just 30 years old, she now owns her own practice as the new owner of Safford & Martin Dental in Marshfield.

English and earned their degrees in accounting while their three daughters were attending grade school. They now own their own accounting business in California.

With an office overlooking the Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department on East Fourth Street, Safford is happy to be right near the heart of the city.

“They are the American Dream,” said Safford proudly.

“We have a great location, which is one of the reasons why I actually picked this practice,” she said. Born in the Philippines and raised in Santa Rosa, California in Sonoma County, Safford’s parents were nontraditional students who learned 10 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

With an original plan of following in her parents’ footsteps, Safford’s career aspirations first turned toward teeth at the young age of 14. “I had a wonderful counselor who asked what I liked, and I said ‘I like teeth,’ and she said, ‘Why don’t you become a dentist?’” And I said, ‘A woman dentist- that’s weird. Because I had never seen a woman dentist.’

When she said that, it really opened all these doors,” she said. “At that moment, I knew I wanted to be a dentist. That was the first time that I’ve felt an epiphany, and actually I don’t know if I’ve ever felt that again.” With confidence in her decision, Safford began actively investigating her career path. “Questions are important as a young adult,” she said. “If you are interested in something, you have to spread your wings and can’t be ashamed of asking questions. I had a lot of people on my side, a lot of great mentors.” Safford’s official dentistry career path began at Santa Rosa Junior College,

where she also played tennis. “I had sports on my mind and education at the same time,” she said. “During the time that I was at school, I also was playing tennis and traveling throughout the U.S. I finished school, but it was tough.” After becoming the NJCAA California Tennis Singles State Champion and ranking 1 in All American Singles and Double, she accepted the NCAA Division II Tennis Scholarship at University of Hawaii in Hilo. “Hawaii is not a vacation place when you’re studying, but I was very grateful for going there,” she said of the experience. During her last few semesters at Hilo, she worked as a dental assistant for a local practice and also met her future husband, Marshfield native Tyler. After Hilo, the couple moved to Franklin, Wisconsin, where Safford worked at another local practice. “I got to really experience all the facets of a practice,” she said. “It was a real eye-opener and I don’t think I would own my own business if it weren’t for that experience. I’ve worked for so many good practices and I knew what it was like on all different ends of it. Everyone works so hard and it takes everyone to make a patient happy.” Then she followed four straight years of intensive SAFFORD CONTINUED ON PAGE 12 >>>

schooling at Marquette University School of Dentistry. “After school, I was pretty much open to anything -- whatever I felt in my gut was a good decision,” she said. “I had a goal of working full time, but I was a little open-ended. My mom has always said ‘go with your gut,’ and it’s so true. If you think about something too hard, you might not be happy. Ultimately, you want to be happy for the rest of your life.” After exploring almost every practice in central Wisconsin, Safford was drawn to Martin Dental and the Marshfield community. “I thought about the future and was looking for something that’s solid and that has good schools. The hospital’s here, the clinic is here, there are a lot of young professionals coming in. This is a good place to settle down and raise a family.” As a new mother to 8-month-old Macovey, she and her husband are 12 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

happy to be back in Tyler’s hometown of Marshfield. “I wanted to envision myself somewhere for 30-plus years. That’s how this ended up happening,” she said. “I asked, ‘Where do I see myself and how long do I see myself somewhere?’ and I decided that I want to be here forever.” Though Dr. Gary Martin is not officially retired and still works on a part-time basis at the practice, as of June 2015, Safford is the new owner. “It’s important, I think, for any small private self-sustained small business like this to have some type of transition plan,” she said. Now, with almost one year on the job, Safford couldn’t be happier. “My favorite part of my job is working with patients,” she said. “I love working with my patients and my staff, because we all work together to help our patients. Even those people who haven’t seen a dentist in 20 or 30 years, we love seeing those patients. We

love keeping them on track.” She also loves seeing her regular patients as their families grow, and meeting their relatives. “It’s a familyoriented business. That’s my favorite thing.” Moving forward, said she hopes to become more involved in the community and to be a mentor herself. She is off to a good start, having been inducted into 2014 SRJC Athletic Hall of Fame at her alma mater in Santa Rosa. When not at the office, Safford enjoys weekend trips to visit family, paddle boarding, playing tennis, and traveling up north. “I had so many mentors growing up that I hope I can someday be that mentor for kids,” she said. “I really want to encourage all the young adults and even adults of all ages. Everybody has their own path, but I want to help people really work on what their heart is going to love in the end.”

Time is The Main Grain Bakery’s Bread and Butter BY KARLA SWITA PHOTOS SERENA SBLENDORIO

You could say that Sarah Jo More was born to bake. Whether it was baking cookies with her grandma, churning out cakes with her mom and sisters, or celebrating “Pie Mondays” with college friends at the start of each week, she found pure joy in every aspect of baking while growing up in Campbellsport. Sure, she likes eating a warm gooey brownie and the gratifying scents of buttery rolls transforming into golden brown nuggets in the oven. But, she’s mostly motivated by the art of the craft. The slow process of measuring, sifting, kneading, shaping and waiting for dough to rise is completely peaceful for More, 27. In 2011, More turned her passion for baked goods into a business. Along with two other graduates of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, she opened The Main Grain Bakery on First Street, and today is sole owner. Like many entrepreneurs who set out in the marketplace with great ideas and a dream, More lacked tangible business experience. ”The hardest part for me was learning everything on the fly,” she said. “I didn’t have a business background to start, so it was really putting our best foot forward and making every decision our best.” Helping her make a go of it are six bakers on staff. She also credits a supportive husband and family, and a community that values food made from scratch. High quality organic ingredients sourced as locally as possible make up every item including artisan breads, muffins, bars, scones, cupcakes and wedding cakes. “We don’t use any artificial ingredients, flavors or substitutes. It’s that simple. We don’t have any secret ingredients

or any magic. If you stop in the bakery, you can see bread being developed every step of the way,” said More. Considering the meticulous care that goes into their bread making, however, it does appear that there’s a secret: it’s good old-fashioned time. “All of our bread is naturally leavened, which means we don’t use active yeast. Instead, we rely on a natural fermentation process to create the highest quality sourdough loaf,” she said. Although fermentation is a lengthy three-day process for supplying a needit-now market, More said it’s extremely rewarding. “We really love sourdough here. It’s what makes our world go round.” Simplicity is also a staple of great bread making at The Main Grain where they rely on water, flour and salt. From there every step must be done in perfect order and measured precisely to end up with delicious loaves like Asiago Thyme, a customer favorite. On an average week, The Main Grain produces around 500 loaves of bread, which doesn’t include ciabatta, bagels, rolls or pretzels. Wholesale orders also affect the bakery’s output. They’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to fulfill orders coming from restaurants throughout central Wisconsin. Supplying the food service industry and helping them develop custom items has become a profitable niche. Red Eye Brewing Co. of Wausau, an artisan food and craft beer establishment, added rod pretzels to the menu since their customers

approved of the signature appetizer developed by The Main Grain Bakery. While More bakes her way to sweet success, she takes time out to enjoy the outdoors by camping and canoeing with her newlywed husband and visiting her family in Milwaukee.

Raised to lead others to greatness BY KARLA SWITA PHOTO BY MARIE WALKOWSKI

hen Kathy Strasser went to Drake University and moved away from her Antigo childhood home, she looked forward to getting mail from her dad, who often sent words of encouragement and inspiration. He gave her books like “The Millionaire Mind” and “Your Best Life Now.” Each one was inscribed with hand written notes: “I think these are some great thoughts we all need to know,” or “Maybe this book would apply to working mothers or business mothers.” He also sent newspaper articles with headlines announcing “The 10 Keys to Success.” Every note ended with “Love Dad, God Bless.” Strassers’s dad died suddenly of cancer in the fall of 2007. “Almost every September I ask myself what caused my 16 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

dad to send me these,” said Strasser. “They’re all things that continue to encourage me and make me believe that I can do anything I set my mind to.” His method of parenting influenced Strasser’s love of lifelong learning, dedication to hard work and ability to be a leader. These astute qualities have led her to become the first woman chief operating officer in the history of River Valley Bank. One year after leaving a 20-year career with Wausau Financial Systems, Strasser, 46, oversees operations of River Valley’s 15 branches, an online banking division, a niche lending sector and about 100 employees. “My biggest responsibility as COO is improving the use of technology and internal processes to enhance the customer experience,” said Strasser. “I actually find joy and thrive in an

environment where I can take on challenges and help those around me do the same.” As a new executive at River Valley, Strasser wanted to immediately establish ties with her co-workers so she invited them to a session of “Donuts with Kathy,” where a few employees at a time gathered with her to get to know each other over Dunkin Donuts and coffee. “ I wanted people to know me as a person rather than a COO,” she said. “I’m usually more of a private person so I wanted to open myself up to others as well as learn about them.” Employees at the coffee klutch learned that Stasser has been married to her best friend Tim for 17 years and they have a 13-year-old son. She makes video scrapbooks and always has three books going at once—one

fiction, one business and one about church. Currently, she’s reading “The Nightingale,” “Chief Customer Officer 2.0,” and “Autopsy of a Deceased Church: 12 Ways to Keep Yours Alive.” By the variety of books Strasser feeds her intellect, it’s easy to see what drives her. Improving processes and helping people find success are top priorities. “My parents taught me to be generous with my time, talents and money, so I’ve given back to my community in ways that are enjoyable and best use my background and skillset,” she said. As Aspirus board of directors chair and board of directors chair for her church, Strasser is passionate about reaching out. In 2013, she traveled to Africa visiting poor villages in Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda to research mission sites where STRASSER CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 >>>

Nelson a licensed aesthetician owns Glow Aesthetics LLC, a business she started in 2011 with an airbrush spray tanning salon.

Nelson is married to husband Stephan and she has three children Aiden, 12, Natalee, 9 and Dax age 10 months. “Balancing everything has been challenging but it has been very rewarding at the same time,” Nelson said. “I’m balancing my baby, my business and my family and making sure my clients are happy and I’m making time to do things like go to my son’s track meets. She was employed for four years at Renaissance Learning in Wisconsin Rapids before becoming a stay at home mom and eventually opening her new business venture at Studio 8011. “The longer I was out there the more I got interested in skin care and people kept asking if I did make up, she said. opened the aesthetics portion of her business when additional space became available at Studio 8011. “I love skin care and everything just came together,” she said. A graduate of The Salon Professional Academy Nelson traveled three times a week to Appleton for classes for six months to become a licensed aesthetician. She was also named the Bioelements Student of the Year and became Bioelements brand certified. “It seemed like a lot to sacrifice at the time but it was well worth it,” Nelson said. “My husband was amazing and so supportive.” Glow Aesthetics is a one stop shop for all your skin care needs whether its feeling good about your skin on a daily basis or pampering for a special occasion such as an anniversary, wedding or prom. “I love that what I do makes my customers feel good about themselves,” Nelson said. “They love what they see.” Determining a client’s skin type and selecting skin care products that revitalize the skin is an important aspect of Nelson’s business. “Clients will see the impact of good skin care,” she said. 22 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

In addition to the Bioelements line of skin care products Nelson offers Mirabella, a mineral-based makeup that is fragrance- and gluten-free. Nelson remains busy with the spray tanning portion of the business as well, especially during the winter months. She knows the health benefits of a spray tan verses other tanning methods since her mother was diagnosed with skin cancer. “Skin cancer is more prevalent than people realize,” she said. “I definitely see the importance of staying out of the sun.” Centrally located Glow Aesthetics works hand in hand with the other businesses at Studio 8011, which offers hair, nails and spa services. A majority

of the studios clientele are from the Wisconsin Rapids area, Plover, Stevens Point and Wausau. “It’s a one-stop shop especially if you are getting ready for a wedding or for prom,” said Devon Carlson, who has owned Devon’s Trends for more than 10 years. “I think it has made us a place to be.” Shannon Lynch of Plover has known Nelson for more than 15 years since they worked together at Renaissance Learning. Lynch both a graphic designer and a client of Nelson’s created the logo and designed business cards and other digital and print items for Glow. “She’s grown her business quite a lot over the years, she’s on such a

great trajectory as a business woman,” Lynch said. “It’s not such an easy task being a business woman and a mom and she also gives support to other people. She truly lives the mantra ‘it takes a village’. I’m proud of what she has done.” As a customer Lynch uses Glow’s Bioelement products and Mirabella make up lines and services such as the spray tanning and facials. “Laura’s willing to answer any questions you may have and she’s good at making her clients feel comfortable,” Lynch said. “People trust her and that’s a great testament to who she is as a successful business woman.” Megan Smolarek of Wisconsin Rapids has been a customer at Glow since the shop opened in 2011. “I started going there first to get a spray tan and when she started going to school to be an aesthetician I was really excited about it,” she said. When Smolarek was a bridal

attendant Nelson did her make up for the wedding and will again do her make up for her engagement photos and upcoming wedding in February. “Because she’s such a great business owner she makes you feel welcome,” Smolarek said. “You don’t have to be embarrassed about asking questions and she’s very knowledgeable. Summer Skin Care BY

Jamie Waskin RN BSN, Licensed Aesthetician, Wauskin Medical Aesthetics our skin is your body’s largest organ and your body’s first defense against many things throughout a lifetime. Your skin too needs to be defended and protected. One of the biggest offenders is the sun. The best way to avoid trouble? Block harmful rays when you’re out during the day; even during cloudy days use sun protection.

Y

26 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

Sun rays can penetrate light clouds, mist, and fog, and can reflect up at you from water, sand or light pavement. The danger exists in all seasons, and the damage builds up each year. THE DANGERS The American Cancer Society estimates that over 76,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and more than 10,000 will die of it. Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer that is essentially always caused by sun exposure. Unless it is found very early, it can spread quickly throughout the body. Repeated exposure to UV rays (natural or in tanning booths and beds) increases the risk of melanoma, as does even a single severe blistering sunburn. That risk can never be reversed, but progression of the damage can be limited by protecting yourself from the sun’s UV rays. Other less aggressive cancers are also

associated with UV exposure. The most common is basal cell carcinoma, a very common but slow-growing skin cancer that can usually be treated by simple excision or freezing. Excessive sun exposure can also lead to the development of actinic keratosis, a brownish scaly change in the skin that is hard to treat and that rarely can be restored to a completely normal appearance. SUNSCREENS Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVB (sunburns and cancer-causing) and UVA (aging and wrinkling) rays. An SPF 15 protects against 93% of the sun’s rays, whereas an SPF 30 protects against 97%. Be sure to apply sunscreen to all exposed skin and reapply every two hours. Do not forget sensitive areas such as the tops of the ears and back of the neck. Make-up is often not enough alone but can be a great adjunct. Avoid any baby oils or

petrolatum products on your face or lips when going out into the sun; they can actually absorb the sun’s rays. Remember your hands! CLOTHING Broad brimmed hats (the bigger the better) cast shade and protect your head, face and ears from direct sunlight. Sunglasses prevent premature wrinkles as well as damage to the eye itself. Clothing with a UPF (ultraviolet protection rating) is now available—the new technology is helpful, but covering up with any shirt, scarf or pants is better than nothing. SLIP, SLAP, SLOP! The best way to protect yourself is to remember these three easy steps: slip on a shirt, slap on a hat, and slop on some sunscreen. If you have questions, the licensed professional staff at our office can help select the best sun protection products for your specific skin type.

Makeover rejuvenates working mom STORY AND PHOTOS BY YOU MAGAZINE STAFF

Raising three boys and working full time on opposite shifts as your fiancée can make it very difficult to find the time to unwind and relax. Jacki was nominated by her coworker Caitlin Schulz who felt she deserved something special after recently having her second baby. “Jacki and Steve work very hard to make sure they get to spend the most time with their kids as possi30 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

ble. I really wanted to give Jacki an opportunity to get a fresh look for summer and to help work out some of the physical stress from her retail job. I’m just relieved Steve liked her new hair as much as Jacki does!” Caitlin stated. Jacki was more than happy to be our nominee for this edition. “I was excited for the new experiences and getting pampered!” Jacki said.

hair Going blonde without bleach or lighteners

Jacki started out with about six inches of outgrowth and a few inches of blonde going through the ends of her medium length hair. During the consultation, Jacki and Kelsy discussed the allergy that Jacki has to bleach or lighteners. She wanted to go lighter again so Kelsy had

to do a little brainstorming to achieve a lighter result without using a lightener. Kelsy applied a light neutral blonde and a medium beige blonde for highlights. After processing, Kelsy applied a toner to brighten Jacki’s over all color just a little more. For Jacki’s cut, Kelsy took about

three inches off the back and kept the majority of the length through the front to achieve a fun and different look. Kelsy finished with volumizing products for lift and body and added curls to give Jacki a fresh new look. MAKEOVER CONTINUED ON PAGE 32 >>>

Natural look that adds dimension

Starting with a white shadow in Oyster as a base all over the lid to even out the skin tone and to help blend out the rest of the shadows. I then started blending a light brown shade in the crease of her eye as a transition shade. This is going to give dimension and help blend out the darker shadows. Then to darken up the look, we used Cocoa in the outer corner and a little in the crease. To deepen and add some color I used Aubergine in the outer corner on top of Cocoa. In order to brighten and open the eye, I used Vanilla Mousse in the inner corner and on the ball of the eye. I made sure not to go any higher than the

crease color. To keep up with the purple look, I used Merle’s Soft Touch Eye Pencil in Earthy to line her upper lash line. After popping some black mascara on, we moved on to foundation. Doing your eye makeup first before foundation is only going to make your life so much easier! If you get some fall-out from the eyeshadows where you don’t want it, you can clean it up! We used Perfection foundation which is a lighter coverage foundation with a great SPF of 25! It excellent for summertime which is right around the corner! Before we set it with powder, I used a newer product which is a liquid blush in the shade of

Captivating. It looks so natural by using the Beauty Blender that it just melts right into the foundation and blends so seamlessly. Setting the foundation with Ultra Powder gives the foundation an airbrushed look. To bronze her up a bit I used our new Sunny Side bronzer and added a little light brown brow powder to fill in any sparse areas in the brows. I used I’m Peachless lip glaze to finish up the look. eyebrows

Eyebrows are the last thing that a busy mom should have on her mind! Jacki is the perfect candidate for eyebrow tinting. She has blonde hair, fair skin and her eyebrows are pretty light. First we trimmed her hair, then waxed the eyebrow to pick up the arch and clean up the shape. We followed with eyebrow tinting in which we used a light brown color just to enhance her natural flow of the brow. The tint is great because you can monitor how dark it gets to ensure it is a great match for the hair. Your eyebrows should be a bit darker than your hair to help frame the face!

<<< MAKEOVER CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33

Gel polish adds strength and glamour For this month’s makeover, Jacki preferred to do gel polish. Gel polish has really been a top choice in the salon overall. It has taken over acrylic nails as a preferred service simply because of its ease on the nail plate. I also feel, at least in my salon, there has been a shift in what women prefer. They are leaning more towards the natural looking nails. Thinner but strong. The idea of not having acrylic unexpectedly lifting or popping off is really a great upside to gel polish. There are literally thousands of color combinations! My pedicuring services are also very popular right now because ladies are getting their feet ready for sandals. A full spa pedicure in the Whirlpool spa, trim, file and warm paraffin wax dip for deeper moisturizing are all done in a tranquil, private room. Then top it off with your favorite color! If clients prefer to skip all the fluff they can opt to have just a mini pedicure for a quick clean-up. This includes a simple file and polish!

reflexology

Taking some much needed time to be pampered Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression. The studies also showed it enhances relaxation and sleep. Everyone has daily stress to cope with such as being a parent, balancing work as well as home and finding time to exercise. Soothing Hands Reflexology gives you that hour to forget about the rest of the world and be re-energized. It’s an affordable way to get some time to yourself and it works into pretty much anyone’s schedule. This was Jacki’s first experience with reflexology and it was definitely a success! She stays incredibly busy with her three children. “Hector is eight and he loves arts, crafts as well as soccer. Eli will be three next month and he loves superheroes as well as playing with his toys. The youngest, Renly, is two months old,” Jacki explains. “Three boys in the house is a bit much to handle.” Every day is a busy day for her! This makeover was a much needed escape to give her a little time to be pampered like she deserves.

Reduce stress, relax and unwind! Jacki was so excited for her Swedish massage session. This mother of three truly deserves to relax and I am honored to be able to help her today. She has never had a massage before and she had many emotions. She was nervous, anxious and ready all at the same time. As I started the session, Jacki was breathing quickly and anticipating what was going to happen. It didn’t take long for her to trust me and enjoy her session. She was so relaxed that she was able to fall asleep on a few different occasions. Having a Swedish (relaxing) massage is equivalent to seven to eight hours of sleep. I couldn’t think of a better recipient than Jacki since she is at home with a newborn and working which makes it easy to fall short on sleeping. There are several different modalities in massage. I specialize in Deep Tissue (therapeutic), Swedish (relaxing), Prenatal (pregnant), Cranio-Sacral (light pressure – body rhythms), Lymphatic (manual drainage – light pressure), Sports (athlete, pre and post events) and Chair Massage

(mobile for offices). Some great benefits of massage are decreased anxiety as well as depression, enhanced sleep quality, greater energy, improved concentration, increased circulation and reduced fatigue. It is very important to take care of your physical health as experts estimate that ninety percent of diseases are stress related. Jackie was completely relaxed at the end of her hour session and plans to return. She also stated she will tell her family and friends about her experience. There are so many people who are scared about massage because they are simply uneducated in regards to the experience. Jackie stated, “I’m ready to go home and relax with the kids.” This amazing woman was surprised how much she enjoyed her time away and was able to relax. She was able to enjoy some “me” time which is important for everyone to do!

Fashion Questions

My Readers Have Asked

BY CAROL KNAUF, OWNER RAE BAXTER’S FASHIONS

I AM LOOKING FOR A DRESS

You are looking for a dress for a special occasion such as a wedding, graduation, confirmation, class reunion, etc. However, you don’t know what you are looking for in a dress but “you will know it when you see it”. Well, not really because with today’s fashions, you will need to try the “new” styles to see how they look on. What is a dress? A dress is a garment consisting of a skirt with an attached bodice, giving the effect of a one-piece garment. There are several categories of dresses: Chemise – straight dress without a waistline seam, cut with few or no darts. Also called shift, sack or pencil. A-line – dress with normal shoulders, slight flare toward the hemline but without a waistline seam. Also called shift or skimmer. Trapeze – dress with normal shoulders, no waistline seam, more flare at the hemline than an A-line. Tent – dress with normal shoulders, no waistline seam but very wide, full and flaring hem. Caftan – long dress with decorated opening for the neck and long sleeves. Float – straight dress with no waistline seam, fullness controlled from the pleats or gathers at the shoulders or yoke. Wedge – dress without a waistline seam, has wide shoulders and tapers to a narrow hemline, usually has dolman sleeves. Sheath – straight narrow dress without waistline seam, fitted with darts. Princess – dress without waistline seam, fitted by curved seams originating at the shoulder or armhole, extending over the bust to the hem. The skirt may or may not be flared. Basic – simple fitted dress, usually cut with jeweled neckline, darts, 40 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

fitted set-in sleeves, natural waistline and straight skirt. Also called a fitted dress. Empire – dress with a high waistline under the bust. Drop waist – dress with elongated bodice so that the waistline seam falls below the waist. Also called low-torso. Elasticized waist – waist has elastic for comfort, dress may be belted or unbelted. Shirtwaist – dress with bodice styled like a tailored shirt, usually buttoned from neck to below the waist with either a straight or full skirt. Jumper – sleeveless, collarless dress worn with a blouse or sweater underneath. Coat dress – dress which fastens usually with buttons from the neck to the hem like a coat, may be single

or doubled breasted, worn belted or unbelted. Sundress – dress with camisole or halter type top worn for casual summer wear. Asymmetric – dress that is not the same on the left and right sides, may drape to one side or close to one side. Draped – dress with additional fullness pleated, gathered or held to one side. Wrap – dress wraps and fastens to one side, either front or back, may be held with a button/buttonhole, tie or belt. Pant dress – combination of bodice with divided or split skirt. With so many styles of dresses you should be able to find what you are looking for, right? No, the fashion designers dictate the styles, colors,

prints and lengths for the season. So when you are looking for a dress for a special occasion, you probably will not find the dress that “you will know when you see it” because it is not made. Your best bet is to try on the new styles. You will be delighted with some and not with others. The variety of dresses range from just above the knee to maxi length, with bold prints to stripes, soft knits to chiffons fabrics, mostly sleeveless – so there are a variety of jackets (lace-like), boleros and cardigans for cover. Now when you are looking for a dress this spring/summer, keep an open mind and TRY many different styles on to get an idea of how they look on you. You will be delightfully surprised to find the dress that “you really didn’t know when you saw it”.

Mom and daughter get made over for Mother’s Day

Stephanie Clubb is a mother wife and a mother of five children. She doesn’t wear a lot of makeup daily, and she finds time only once every three months to get her hair done.

darker base.

As the youngest of Stephanie’s children, ranging in age from 11 to 5, Grace Clubb gets the brunt of going with her mom to everyone’s activities.

Salon Envy owner and stylist Jessica Richie worked with Grace to trim her long, blond locks, then gave her a new style before her school day. After French braiding part of Grace’s hair to the side, Richie used a skinny curling iron to shape the rest of Grace’s tresses into bouncing curls.

As the candidates for You Magazine’s mother-daughter makeover, the Clubbs were treated to a day of pampering at Stevens Pointbased Salon Envy. One week before Mother’s Day, the duo got the full treatment, including a new hair-do for each, a manicure for Grace and makeup for Stephanie.

RED HOT

Stephanie decided she wanted to try a hair color darker than her usual blond tones. Working with Salon Envy stylist Lauren Karaliunas, Stephanie agreed to try a shade of red, with streaks of caramel and a

Karaliunas applied the new colors to Stephanie’s hair, then trimmed and straightened it, parted to the right.

She finished the look with a glittery hair spray to add some shimmer and help the curls hold. Grace said her hair was her favorite part of the salon day.

THINK PINK

Richie gave Grace’s nails a touch of pink with a manicure before class. Grace selected “Think Pink,” polish, a vibrant shade, for Richie to use.

Richie started by rubbing Grace’s nails with polish remover to make them dry and help the polish last longer. She then applied the pink polish. After waiting for the polish to dry, Richie sprayed Grace’s nails to help the polish hold. Staying neutral Stephanie said she doesn’t typically wear much makeup – just some base, and she might occasionally dress up her eyes. She said she’d never had her makeup done for her. Karaliunas used neutral tones to bring out Stephanie’s facial features, starting with foundation, then adding blush to her cheeks and a light dusting to her forehead.

She then added highlighter under Stephanie’s eyebrows and above her cheekbone by the corner of her eye. Karaliunas applied a beige eyeshadow to Stephanie’s lids, then a darker tone in the crease. She lined Stephanie’s top lids with black eyeliner, followed by brown on the bottom. She finished the look with mascara on Stephanie’s top and bottom eyelashes and a shimmer on her lips. After checking out their completed looks, Stephanie asked Grace if she was glad she joined the mommydaughter salon day. “Yes,” she said. “I want to do this again.”

Do your joints feel stiff and sore in warm weather? Soon, summer will be ushering in warmer weather and some people will experience swelling in the joints of their hands, feet and legs. But it may not be the dog days of summer that cause the problem. Swollen joints may be waterrelated rather than weather-related. Water retention, which is also known as edema, occurs when your body’s fluids are out of balance. The human body is masterfully designed. When it is overloaded with sodium or toxins such as nicotine or alcohol, your cells release water in an effort to balance your fluids. This extra fluid enters the bloodstream and pools in the joints. The swelling starts in the feet and ankles and then moves its way up the body until it reaches the neck and spine. As the joints swell with extra fluid, they become stiff and painful. Ironically, dehydration can also cause swollen joints. When temperatures reach the high 70s and above, your body sweats to stay cool. When the body detects a need for water, the cells again come to the rescue and release fluid into the blood stream. To avoid dehydration and minimize swelling, you should drink water throughout the day. Since body size, shape and activity level differ from person to person, there are not recommended dietary guidelines for the amount of water a person should drink. In the past, science recommended drinking eight, eight-ounce glasses per day. But for some people, drinking 64 ounces of water every day may cause hyponatremia, a serious condition that dilutes the required amounts of sodium and electrolytes the body needs to function properly. The most recent recommendation is to listen to your body. If you need water, you will feel thirsty or hungry. Instead of reaching for a soda, a bag of puffed cheese snacks or a cookie, drink a glass of water. Listening and acting on your body’s cues should ensure you are getting enough fluid to keep your body healthy and hydrated. If you have a pre-existing health condition or take diuretics (water pills), talk to your healthcare provider. He or she may give you specific recommendations for the amount of water you should drink. Lifestyle habits may prevent fluid retention. If you are prone to swollen joints in hot weather and do not suffer from other health concerns, the five suggestions below may help you avoid fluid retention. • Limit the amount of sodium in your diet • Exercise • Drink water • Change from a sitting to a standing position frequently • Avoid extreme temperatures You should also talk to your doctor or pharmacist about supplementing your diet with calcium, which may help you minimize fluid retention. If you have had sore or swollen joints for more than a week, make an appointment with your healthcare provider or an orthopaedic specialist. Water retention can also signal the presence of other health conditions that need medical treatment. To request an appointment with one of Bone & Joint’s orthopaedic specialists, call 800.445.6442.

Is your foot paying the high price of fashion? Lately, you’ve noticed a strange sensation in your foot. When you walk, it feels like there’s a stone in your shoe or your sock has a wrinkle. You shake out your shoes and straighten your socks, but the feeling is still there. If you have these symptoms, you may be experiencing a condition known as Morton’s Neuroma. That sometimes painful irritation on the bottom of your foot may be caused by the thickening of the nerve located between your third and fourth toes. At the onset of the condition, you may feel an intermittent burning sensation between your toes that can progress to cause pain with every step you take. Other symptoms that may indicate Morton’s Neuroma, include: • Tingling, numbness or burning in the ball of your foot or in your toes • Cramping in your toe • Sharp or shooting pains in your foot or toes • The sensation of walking on a pebble • Pain when wearing shoes that are too narrow If you have experienced foot pain for more than a week and the symptoms are becoming progressively more painful, you should see your healthcare provider or orthopaedic specialist as soon as possible. Left untreated, Morton’s Neuroma can cause permanent nerve damage. Early treatment also may help you avoid surgery. Working with your primary care physician or a podiatrist can help you minimize the symptoms and potential long-term damage from Morton’s Neuroma. Your healthcare provider may recommend: • Exercise and stretches • Ice therapy • Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) medications • Use of orthotics, shoe inserts or pads custom-made for your feet • Changing your shoes • Avoiding high heels • Injections in the toes to block the nerves • Physical therapy If your condition does not improve with conservative, non-surgical treatments, surgery may be necessary. Depending on your condition, your healthcare provider may be able to reduce the pressure on the nerve by performing decompression surgery on the tissues surrounding the nerve. If your condition is extremely painful and nerve damage is permanent, your surgeon may remove the nerve completely. However, this type of surgery will usually be the last option. While the surgery will relieve your pain, it also will leave you with a permanent feeling of numbness.

What causes Morton’s Neuroma? Healthcare professionals and researchers do not know the exact cause of Morton’s Neuroma. But, they have established a strong link between the disorder and other medical conditions and lifestyle habits such as the types of shoes a person wears. Morton’s Neuroma has been associated with the compression of the toes and forefoot. Wearing high heels, which compress to the toes into the toe box of the shoe, may be one reason women suffer from the condition more frequently than men. Other factors that may put you at a higher risk of developing Morton’s Neuroma, include: • Wearing shoes or boots that are too tight, including specialty shoes used in sports • Jogging, running and other sports that increase the impact on the foot • Having high arches or flat feet • Having bunions or hammertoes If you have had irritating sensations or pain in your feet for more than a week, it may be time to see a podiatrist. Call 800.445.6442 to request an appointment with a Bone & Joint foot specialist.

Is Your Diet Causing Pain in Your Joints? It could be. Numerous studies show a correlation between the types of foods we eat and the level of joint pain we experience. Some foods can cause inflammation in the body. Since inflammation is an enemy of joint health, it’s worth taking a look at a few of the foods that can either trigger or minimize this painful response. Sugar Increases Your Waistline and Inflammation. One of the biggest perpetrators of inflammation in our bodies is sugar. It’s no secret that scientists have reported that consuming sugar is as harmful to our bodies as cigarette smoking. Sugar’s one-two punch can wreak havoc on our joints. It’s potential to increase both body weight and inflammation can stress weight-bearing joints and damage cartilage. People suffering from rheumatoid or osteoarthritis may find pain relief by reducing the amount of sugar they consume. But be aware, it may take a bit of sleuthing to decode the labels and decrease the amount of sugar in your diet. You will find this addictive, sweet substance in everything from mustard and bouillon products to sugar-coated cereals. The Women’s Health Magazine publishes 56 names for sugar that can be found on nutrition labels of common foods in the American diet. Sugar hides in ingredient lists as syrups, barely malts and concentrated fruit juices. And any item listed with “ose” in its name, such as fructose or sucrose, is likely another form of sugar. Balance Your Essential Fatty Acids for Optimal Joint Health. We hear a lot about adding omega-3 fatty acids to our diets because they are good for our hearts, but they also can have a positive impact our joints. The truth is our bodies need both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids for peak function. All too often, the ratio of these essential fats is not in balance, which can increase the risk of inflammation. According to a 2002 study, an omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid ratio of 2:1 or 3:1 has the potential to suppress the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis.

Before convenience foods took over the grocery store shelves, most people consumed a healthy balance naturally. However, with the proliferation of processed and fast foods in the typical American diet, the scale tips heavily toward omega-6 fatty acids. Research out of Ohio State University Medical Center reports the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the U.S. diet is 15:1 to 17:1. These numbers are considerably higher the recommended levels. Large amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids have been reported to increase inflammation. They are often found in vegetable oils and pre-made foods. Many boxed foods and mixes contain copious amounts of soy oils and trans-fats that are rich in omega-6. Omega-3 fatty acids like those found in salmon, halibut, walnuts, flaxseeds and green leafy vegetables, have strong anti-inflammatory properties. To balance these necessary fats, consider the following tips. • Try to eat natural, unprocessed foods as often as possible. • Avoid pre-packaged and fast foods high in sugar. • Eat fish, walnuts and flaxseeds several times each week. • Talk to your healthcare provider about an omega-3 supplement. When omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are in balance, they can reduce inflammation and decrease your risk of obesity, depression and other health conditions. Reduce Inflammation with a Cup of Green Tea Along with green tea’s reported cardiovascular benefits, a study from the University of Michigan Health System suggests it can also impact the body’s immune system. The polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate known as EGCG, which is found in green tea, may prevent or inhibit the development of the joint-damaging inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. If you suffer from joint pain caused by inflammation, reducing sugar, balancing your fatty acids and sipping green tea may help you find relief. Keeping a food diary can help you determine which types of foods relieve your pain and which foods you should avoid because they increase inflammation. If you have joint pain that keeps you from performing daily tasks or prevents you from sleeping, contact one of Bone & Joint’s specialists today.

Call 800.445.6442 to schedule an appointment or visit one of Bone & Joint’s Walk-In locations, to be seen by an orthopaedic expert right away.

Halo Hair Design opens in Plover BY NATHAN VINE PLOVER - After 18 years in the beauty industry, Jessica Batten has realized her goal with the opening of Halo Hair Design. The salon, located at 2589 Post Road in the former location of Golden Image Tanning Studio, opened for business in April. The opening comes at a unique time, as work has started on a Wisconsin Department of Transportation project to reconstruct Post Road between Green and Springville drives. Batten said her business, however, is uniquely positioned to succeed despite the construction, and the opportunity to open her own salon in a location close to her home was enough to move forward. “I have a built-in list of clients already, and people are willing to travel to where you are to get their hair cut,” Batten

said. “When (the road construction) is all finished, it will be really nice.” Halo Hair Design offers haircuts for men, women and children. Coloring, waxing, perms, deep conditioning treatments and wedding and prom styles are also available. Batten is currently joined at the salon by another stylist, Becky Tripp, and hopes to soon fill the other three other chairs available to rent. “Jessica and I have worked together

DESIGNER CHALLENGE BY JOY MARQUARDT PHOTOS BY KELLY KNIPPER

DESIGNER: Kelly Knipper, Floorology, 10209 Market St., Suite B, Rothschild. DESIGN PROBLEM: Creating a master bathroom renovation for an existing craftsmen style home that incorporates the feeling of a spa highlighted with natural elements. “We had a number of challenges with the project,” Knipper said. “We had a client who wanted to create a feeling of a spa with nature.” The homeowner specifically requested a certain aesthetic which included a river of pebbles flowing throughout the bathroom. The shower in the bathroom needed to have a curbless base that could be installed directly into the sub floor without cutting into the floor joists and the unit had to be light weight and completely waterproof. “The homeowners are very active people now but they wanted to have the option of the curbless base down the road if they had to wheel themselves into the shower,” Knipper said. Among other challenges, the layout of the previous bathroom was very disconnected and created dead space. DESIGN SOLUTION: Knipper developed a good working relationship with the homeowners, a retired couple, who were very detail-oriented.

LEFT TO RIGHT: The shower in the bathroom needed to have a curbless base that could be installed directly into the sub floor without cutting into the floor joists and the unit had to be light weight and completely waterproof. Adjustments to the bathrooms layout connected the tub deck with the shower bench to better utilize the space, creating a larger shower with an airy feeling. Walking into the bathroom, there’s a sense of balance and everything is open, airy and clean looking, Knipper said. To continue the nature theme, neutral shades such as sand, taupe and gray and rustic textured elements were added to the clean linear lines throughout the room.

50 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

“We developed a good partnership,” she said. “It made my job so much fun. They absolutely loved our ideas and concepts.” Adjustments to the bathrooms layout connected the tub deck with the shower bench to better utilize the space, creating a larger shower with an airy feeling. Knipper was able to locate one U.S. manufacturer that made the curbless shower unit to her specifications. The company sent a representative to the jobsite to ensure proper installation. The design in the shower tile features a flowing river made of small pebbles. The pattern was initially drawn onto the wall and meticulously covered with pebbles by hand-placing each stone. The 12-inch-by-24-inch tile that butted into the pebbles had to be cut without chipping the tile or creating uneven edges. Advanced pre-planning of tile and rock placement was necessary to achieve the free flowing effect. All surfaces in the bathroom – including the bathroom floor, shower walls, bench and tub – surround were properly leveled and completely waterproofed. Grout joints were tight and consistent, tile cuts were seamless and all transitions smooth and complimented one another, Knipper said. To continue the nature theme, neutral shades such as sand, taupe and gray and rustic textured elements were added to the clean linear lines throughout the room. Tile on the tub deck has the appearance of reclaimed barn wood. “We are a flooring and tile shop, but we will consult with clients on things like paint colors and lighting,” Knipper said. “We made the recommendation to put extra lighting over the shower. When you put details in the shower like that, you want to be able to see it.” Walking into the bathroom, there’s a sense of balance and everything is open, airy and clean looking, Knipper said. “I loved the project, it was an outside-the-box type project,” she said. “Those are my favorite kind. We can do traditional, but when you are given an assignment, it can be totally out there and totally different.” Helpful decorating hint: Knipper recommends using a high-performance grout to avoid cracking, mold, mildew and discoloration in all bathroom and kitchen projects. Low-quality grouts are less porous. “I don’t even sell the regular grout,” Knipper said. “We don’t even carry it.”

Grout, which was once an afterthought, is now available in a variety of colors and finishes and can add a decorative element to a home project. “Grout nowadays is amazing if you get a good one,” Knipper said. “There’s no limit to color choice. You can pick one that s similar to your tile or a contrasting color for added design.” For proper installation of tile Knipper also recommends working with a certified tile installer who has passed industry validation through the Certified Tile Education Foundation. “They have to keep up on industry standards,” Knipper said. “Our installers are certified and we are pretty proud of that.”

It could cause a person to wonder, why can’t the doctor come to my home, office or school instead of having to go out of my way to fit it in? Sometimes schedules are so hectic,

obligated to go to the emergency room which results in the price adding up quickly. Adding to the financial costs, there’s the waiting time while being exposed to other illnesses as well as

less than preferred privacy. “The majority of women work and their time is precious whether it is at work or with their family,” said Jessica Stowell, the Radiology Lead for Astia Health, LLC. Dr. Alexander Sommers was an EMS director for years before starting Astia Health, LLC. “I felt the current climate of healthcare became more corporate and less about patient care delivery which is what most healthcare providers sign up to get involved with,” explained Dr. Sommers. “We built the entire business based on customer satisfaction access in mind.” With being willing to meet you anywhere, they make sure to have the best equipment for the job. “We have the state’s first most advanced mobile lab,” stated Dr. Sommers. The ambulance is essentially a mobile hospital that can help you and your family no matter where you are. To make things even better, all the devices are geared to give results in less than half an hour. “We offer videoconferencing services that can be utilized right from the patient’s home or work where you

speak to a Tele Triage Nurse then speak to a doctor if need be. We also offer a mobile service that comes to you! No need to leave in the middle of the night and pay the ER expenses because that is the only place that is open. We do have our traditional office exam rooms too,” Jessica explains. With such service, it could cause someone to wonder how much extra you’d have to pay for those services. Dr. Sommers enjoys helping patients with their illnesses as well as with saving money. “We’re happy to match any costs if anyone’s able to beat our charges,” he mentioned. Lower costs may leave some to question the quality of care. Dr. Sommers assures that “the quality of the things we use is at least equal if not better than what you would get in a hospital or clinic setting.” The next time you’re feeling sick and want to stay in bed, feel free to! Marshfield Clinic began offering the service in January, and has since noticed a lot of interest and demand for the service. “We recognize that people want more non-invasive treatment to be available for cosmetic interventions and particularly ones that have little or no downtime and minimal risk,” said Dr. Kathleen Meyer, MD at Marshfield Clinic Department of Plastic Surgery. The procedure is noninvasive, involving just a machine and an applicator, with different applicators specialized to different areas of the body for treatment. “Typically with all but the surface applicator, the experience begins with a pulling or pinching feeling initially but shortly after the cooling begins in about 6 or 8 minutes the area becomes numb,” explained Dr. Meyer. “ As the cooling

starts it may feel like stinging or burning or even aching until it goes numb. People compare it to cold exposures they have experienced in winter.” During the treatment typically people read or watch TV or even have a snack, she added. Another benefit to CoolSculpting is that the procedure does not require any down time other than the time of the treatment. As it is not as dramatic or powerful as liposuction, there is no anesthesia necessary, nor is there necessity to restrict activities after the treatment, the side-effects from CoolSculpting are minimal. Doctors strongly recommend wearing light support over the treatment area, such as snug exercise clothes with spandex or lycra for comfort, but otherwise there is no need to interrupt one’s exercise routines after treatment except pertaining to comfort. “There is no need to bring a driver as no sedation is necessary either,” said Dr. Meyer. At this time, the results of CoolSculpting appear to be permanent, and ideal patients for CoolSculpting are those who are near their ideal weight, but need to change in shape.

“Many people have areas that, despite exercise and dieting, those trouble areas never come under control. These might be on the abdomen or on the medial or lateral thigh or on the back,” said Dr. Meyer. “CoolSculpting is a non-invasive technology for treating fat bulges on the body, such as a double chin.” “To patients who are hesitant, I would have them talk to people who have had it done or try to find a one of our ‘Cool’ events where we have typically a live demonstration For the best information of whether Coolsand give a lot of information about the procedure,” culpt is appropriate for a person, doctors recommend a consult that costs $80 and provides said Meyer.

CANCER Chronicles BY TARA MONDLOCH

When we last left Tara Mondloch, YOU Magazine and Wisconsin Media advertising manager, she had received a breast cancer diagnosis and was anticipating a mastectomy in mid-December. In this installment of The Cancer Chronicles, Tara prepares for surgery, both physically and mentally. DECEMBER 2. Thirteen days until surgery and I need to decide what to do. Do I go with a double or single mastectomy? I think I’m going double. I really don’t ever what to have to do this again. I’m a lucky one, it’s Stage 0, but there are those times when even I crack. I try not to. I generally save it for when I shower and no one can see or hear me cry. I don’t cry well. It’s not a good look. And I’m tougher than this crap, but dang it, I want to pout sometimes and say how it’s not fair. DECEMBER 3. The nurse called on the way to Wisconsin Rapids, that’s where I am working today. My right side is cancer free. Can we still take it off? That’s what I want to know. We can, but it will delay the surgery. Now we’re set on December 22, which stinks because I definitely won’t be able to go to Jake’s Christmas concert. I hate having Pep go to stuff by himself. DECEMBER 7. More doctor appointments. I had to sign the consent forms for the surgery and the reconstruction. The more info I get about this the more gruesome it seems. It’s a six to 12-month ordeal before they remove the expanders and replace them with the implants. Dear God, I was hoping it would be over and done with. I’m going to be walking around for a year with this. And the more I think about it the more I worry about what Pep is getting in to – how is he going to look at me when this is done? A delivery from my sister arrived 56 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

today. It’s a completely sexy undergarment that zips in the front and has pockets on the inside to hide the drains, as well inserts for fake breasts to make it looks like you’re not mutilated. Wonderful, it’s amazing that she knows this stuff but seeing it makes it hard for me to believe that I’m here and need to have a mastectomy. A month ago my life was normal, going along fine - no big problems. Pep and I were enjoying our time of being empty nesters when his boys were with their mother and enjoying the time when they were with us - and now my whole world is turned upside down. Almost every day I still ask “why me?” I know I’m lucky, I know there are people out there that don’t have what I have, that didn’t get lucky like me, but it’s still hard for me to think about what the next months will bring me. How will Pep deal with all of this? He’s a strong person and I believe he loves me, but this is even a lot for people who’ve been married for years. We’ve been together for not even three, we’re not married – a decision we made together – I don’t ever want someone to stay because of a piece of paper. I put on the brave face. If I let my kids see that I’m afraid, if I let Pep or my mom see, it would make it harder for them. And I do not want people to feel sorry for me. It is what it is and could be much worse, but the shower has become my new best friend. I can cry and let it all go. No one can see me and no one can hear me. I really like to shower. DECEMBER 13. This weekend was spent running to get the last of our things done. More people are “aware” and I know they mean well, but I can’t stand the look of sympathy they give me. How can I complain and feel sorry for myself when it’s Stage 0? That’s the

My OCD on vi tals

part I’m grappling with right now how should I be feeling about this? Looking up mastectomy bras is not something I ever thought I would have to do, nope not me. I’m all fine and good. So the shock of how unbelievably “not good” looking these things are strikes me with the first search results on Amazon. Gosh I love Amazon. But I find some that look kind of not horrible. Of course I got three since I need different colors. They look kind of comfy, and not “nun-ish.” I don’t even know if that’s a word, but it is now. I finally talk to Pep more. I tell him I’m terrified of what he’s going to think when he sees me. He says, “A person doesn’t turn love on and off like a switch, I’m not going to feel any different after than I do before, I’m just

scared that I’m going to hurt you, I’m not sure how to hold you or do any of this yet.” How heartbreaking is that? I feel like a jerk for putting everyone through all of this. DECEMBER 15. So today should have been THE DAY but nope, got to wait another week. The genetic department called today and I have a variant in the BRCA1 gene of “unknown significance.” What the hell does that mean? It means it’s messed up, but not to the point of testing positive for mutation. Same applies to my STK11 gene which is connected to breast, ovarian and colon cancer. So in the end it kind of solidifies my decision on taking both breasts off. Even a variant of unknown significance is too much of a thing to risk for me. DECEMBER 22. There was no sleep last night but I wasn’t expecting much either. Pep even was tossing and turning. We are headed out for the check in at 8:45 a.m. We walked into the waiting room and who of all people is sitting there waiting? My brother John. Wasn’t expecting him there, but he is definitely a distraction. He’s all over trying to keep my mind off of the elephant in the room. It really is a sweet gesture on his part. Here’s the rundown of what took place: 1. Check in and discuss with the nurse the first step. Pep’s along and we go over the next steps so he’s in the loop.

Presurgery se lfie

selfie Post surger y

2. They take me back to get the IV started as well as the nerve block for the left side - that will have more pain since there’s the node issue. 3. Peter the nurse nails the IV on the first try - score for him - I make sure that he knows he needs to get Pep and the others before I go in. I don’t want to give my rings to anyone else. For some reason I need him to be the one to have them. 4. IV is started and the nerves are numb - we’re in waiting mode for the room to be ready - I told everyone they can leave and grab something to eat. John takes another pre-surgery selfie. 5. Next step is off to the room. I woke up in some pretty severe pain. They hadn’t planned on it being as bad as it was so they were playing catch up trying to get it more under control. John and everyone else comes back and you have to give him credit, he’s in comedy mode to try and help. It really is one of the few times I’m not thinking about the pain, even if it was for a few seconds, and who wouldn’t want a selfie right after surgery right? Pep said that Dr. Seydel came and said she is almost 100% sure she got all of the cancer, so right now I’m going on the premise that I am CANCER FREE! BOSU BALL

BY CHERYL JAWORSKI, FOR YOU MAGAZINE You may have seen these goofy looking things lying around the gym. What is it you ask? The BOSU Ball is a very versatile exercise tool that increases the intensity of a number of exercises. Given its unique shape, it challenges your ability to maintain balance while performing the desired exercise. Although its use can provide a total body workout, many fitness trainers incorporate the use of the BOSU Ball as a supplement to a workout routine. As previously mentioned, the BOSU Ball is a very diverse tool that can enhance a lower or upper body strength training exercise while simultaneously engaging multiple core muscles. Here are some of my favorites:

BALANCED SQUAT:

By simply standing on top of the rounded surface you begin to engage multiple muscles. Adding a controlled squat recruits additional muscles within the core (abdominal and glute areas). When performing any squat remember to: 1.) Keep your head up. Focus on an object in front of you and avoid looking at the floor. 2.) Slightly roll your shoulders back

BALANCED SQUAT

58 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

to keep your chest positioned upright. Avoid lower your chest to your knees. 3.) Lower your body into the squat by keeping your knees behind your toes. Avoid allowing your knees to drift beyond your toes, this places greater stress on your knees. Stick your butt out behind you and keep your back straight. Advance your BOSU Ball Squat by flipping the ball over, ball side down. Warning! This is an advanced exercise that should only be tried with a spotter. Once you have built confidence by maintaining your balance, add in upper body movements. This will not only produce a full body exercise, it continues to challenge your balance by increasing instability.

BOSU SIT UP:

The BOSU Ball provides a slight increase in instability when performing a regular sit up. In addition, it provides a cushioned area for your tailbone. Although this is a specific abdominal exercise, it should be noted that most exercises performed on a BOSU Ball engages your core.

BOSU BALL SQUAT

BOSU SIT UP

BOSU PUSH-UP:

Incorporating a flipped over BOSU Ball into your push-up routine undoubtedly increases the intensity of your upper body muscles but also recruits additional core muscles into the movement. The need to maintain proper form (keeping a flat back) while doing the exercise is only half the battle. Oblique muscles will contract in order to maintain balance from rocking side to side as well.

A BOSU Ball can be purchased at a number of athletic retailers or found online for around $130.00. Depending on the source, your BOSU Ball may include an instructional video and or demonstration poster which help guide your safe and productive use of this unique piece of equipment. Deciding whether or not to invest in a new addition to your home gym can be overwhelming; but I highly recommend the BOSU Ball for its shear versatility, its ability to improve core strength, improve balance and breaking the boredom factor of your daily workout regimen. As always, before beginning an exercise program, consult with your doctor. Cheryl Jaworski, RN, Co-Owner Wausau Health & Fitness, Certified Personal Trainer

Setting the Stage for More Self-Confidence BY TRACY HOUGUM

TRACY HOUGUM, M.S. ED.S, CPCC, ACC

Every night my twelve year old hands over her phone. We have an agreement that mom or dad can check texts and social media posts. What struck me a few weeks back was the dialogue between another girl and her. It was about me! They went on about how self-confident I was. Namely the other girl wanted to know how I got self-confident. My daughter’s response was that I was a Life Coach, with no details. It made me think how did I get to be how I am now? Truth-be-told we all struggle at times with self-confidence. Self-confidence is a muscle you have to build. It doesn’t grow overnight either. It is also like a bank account. There will be days when you will make deposits and days when withdrawals might put you in a bunker of emotional debt. Here is what works in this Life Coach’s world. 60 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

1. Guard your energy wisely and be careful with who you surround yourself with. A positive plus a positive gives you a positive. 2. Give yourself credit, it isn’t boastful, it is healthy to recognize when hard work paid off. You might be the inspiration for someone listening in. 3. Get clear on what you want to say “yes” to and “no” to. Stop qualifying everything and apologizing. 4. Focus on your strengths, find your jam and spread it! You have different skills and life experiences, and you can do far more with those. 5. Remember the Theodore Roosevelt quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” This is a sure fire SC killer. Sometimes social media is not our friend. 6. Develop a life purpose statement. It gives your sails some wind, when you feel deflated. More importantly it gives you something to focus on. Follow this formula, I am the _____that _____. I am the spark that helps women rewrite stories of catastrophe to catalyst events! Now you know mine. 7. Recognize who is talking in your head. Is it you or a negative inner voice? The number one roadblock for people happens to live rent free in your own head. Serve an eviction notice or develop structures to thought-stop your voices and messages. 8. Super Woman had her power pose locked down. What is yours? Before difficult situations, hit the bathroom stall and try one out. 9. Music is magic, nothing clears the funk out like a great self-love tune. Find your go to songs and create a playlist. Mine is called digging deep. 10. Wear clothes that wake you up, not ones that put you to sleep on the couch. Marie Kondo would say, “Wear what brings you joy!” 11. Help out people who are struggling, nothing can boost you up more than boosting up others. Organize a Mandala coloring event with some senior citizens, cook with kids, or tutor an ESL adult. 12. Take care of your body. What goes into your mouth directly impacts your energy. My head is clearer and my confidence soars when I move my body and feed it well.

13. Get cozy with failure. Self-confident people take risks but also know how to care take themselves when things don’t go as planned. Of course plan for success, but with a healthy dose of self-compassion as you encounter bumps along life’s paths. Tracy Hougum is a certified professional Co-Active Life Coach. Essential Oils BY JILL JOHNSON

Essential oils (EO’s), an approach to wellness that has been used throughout the ages by many cultures in variety of ways, they are natural essences extracted from fragrant plants such as lavender, and peppermint. EO’s may have a specific action on a specific illness; they also support and strengthen the person to throw off the illness. Example, tea tree oil will have a direct anti-viral effect on the common cold virus and will also act as an immune-stimulant, encouraging the body to fight the infection. Quality is of great importance when choosing EO’s. A single EO is composed of hundreds of constituents; each may be interacting with any of the others, making it difficult to replicate an EO synthetically. Pure EO’s are like a musical symphony, composed of hundreds of individual notes, yet only in combination is it pleasing to the senses and beneficial to a person. A plastic rose reminds us of the real thing, yet the experience will always be disappointing. With modern technology, it’s not hard to synthesize components of an EO such as jasmine, which can be made to smell similar, yet the benefit is insignificant compared to pure jasmine. Synthetic oils are produced because they are cheaper than the plant EO’s. It’s the EO’s within plants that give them their characteristic smell and flavor. When we open a cedar box and inhale its woody smell, or add the zest of a lemon to a 64 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

drink, it’s the EO that we are enjoying. Any part of a plant may contain its EO – flowers, leaves, stems, etc. EO’s may be extracted from the plant material by one of four methods; distillation is the most common. Always look for pure EO’s that are extracted from natural wild-crafted and or organically grown. You’re then getting an EO uncontaminated by synthetic fertilizers/biocides, your helping to support sustainable agriculture and healthier produce. When properly diluted and used with common sense, EO’s are safe, pleasurable and therapeutic, and enhance a healthy lifestyle. They are, however, extremely concentrated plant essences and need to be treated with respect. The ways that EO’s are used today are, smell, absorbing via skin, and internally. The quickest way, is inhalation through the nose. When the vapor is inhaled (example, smelling a tissue with a few drops of eucalyptus oil on it under the nose) the vapor is warmed, mixed with water vapor in the nasal cavity. Vapors are diffused over hundreds of microscopic hairs, at the root of the nose. Neurochemicals are released and passed on via the nervous system to the rest of the body. Inhaled essential oil will also pass into the lungs and to the microscopic alveoli, where gaseous exchange with the blood takes place. Circulation then transports the oils around the rest of the body.

Absorbing via the skin (most oils should be diluted by way of carrier oils) EO’s penetrate the skin by diffusing through hair follicles and sweat glands. The layers of the skin also act as a reservoir for EO’s, which are then time-released into the circulatory system. This means that EO’s are released into the body more slowly via the skin than if they are taken internally. Taking EO’s internally is where caution and safety are the most important. Internally consuming can be extremely effective in the treatments of certain diseases, but should only be used in this way if prescribed by qualified practitioners who are specifically trained in the oral administration of EO’s. Taken internally, EO’s are absorbed into gastrointestinal track straight into the bloodstream and then to the liver, which in some cases have caused liver failure. Oral administration of EO’s means the entire dose is released into the system at once. There is also the risk of damage to the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Always consult a health professional before taking EO’s internally. Keeping in mind safety and educating oneself on EO’s can help to enrich our wellbeing. For good reference reading try Susan Curtis of Neal’s Yard Remedies Book “Essential Oils” and or Robert Tisserand Book “Essential oil Safety”.

How Job Loss Can Affect Child Support BY ATTORNEY DONNA L. GINZL FOR YOU MAGAZINE

Child support is calculated based on a percentage of the payor’s income (generally 17 percent for one child, 25 percent for two children, 29 percent for three children, and up). After the calculation is established, a fixed dollar amount is determined based on the payor’s average gross monthly income at the time the support order is entered. In other words, the obligation does not automatically change from week to week or month to month based on a payor’s actual earnings where those earnings either fluctuate or the payor experiences a significant and sudden change in his or her income. Wisconsin law allows a party to ask the court to modify the payor’s child support obligation if there is a substantial change

in circumstances that warrants the modification. Generally speaking, a loss of employment and/or a significant reduction in a payor’s income would result in a reduction in the payor’s support obligation if the issue is properly brought before the court. The court cannot retroactively back date a modification of a child support obligation to a date any earlier than the day in which the motion to modify the support obligation is filed and served on the other parent. Because of this, it is critical that a parent with a support obligation act quickly to bring an appropriate motion before the court for modification of his or her child support when the payor has a loss of employment or a sudden decrease in his or her income. If the payor finds new employment between the time that the motion was filed and served and the day that the motion is scheduled to be heard in court, the payor can always withdraw the motion. Failure to bring a motion in a timely manner could result in the payor accumulating significant arrears plus interest for unpaid child support and, in some cases, could result in the payor being found in contempt of court for his or

her failure to pay. If you have experienced a sudden loss of employment or a significant decrease in your earnings and believe you have a legal basis to modify your child support, we recommend that you speak to an experienced attorney who specializes in family law and encourage you to contact our firm with any questions that you may have.

Dealing with incontinence BY DR. EARLYNDA HEUSZEL

A

bout 25 million Americans deal with incontinence on a daily basis, with women being 4 to 5 times more likely to be affected. Most women become aware of their own incontinence after giving birth to a child or experiencing an injury, trauma, or surgery. There are several types of incontinence that one may encounter:

DR. EARLYNDA HEUSZEL

• Stress incontinence is leakage of small amounts of urine when there is increased pressure on the bladder. This happens with exercise, lifting, coughing, sneezing and other activities. • Urge incontinence is the leakage of medium to large amounts of urine when a person feels a sudden strong urge to urinate.

• Mixed Incontinence includes both stress and urge incontinence. • Functional incontinence is urine leakage when a person cannot get to the toilet in time. What causes Urinary Incontinence? Stress incontinence usually results from weakness and lack of support in

These are the muscles that attach to the bottom of the pelvic bones and run front to back, forming a bowl-like structure that lifts to support the internal organs and controls the sphincter muscles. The pelvic floor muscles also work to strengthen the low back, stabilize the pelvic bones, and help with sexual function. Women with stress incontinence often have “under active” pelvic floor muscles. Causes of under active pelvic floor muscles include: • Pregnancy and childbirth • Injury or trauma • Surgery in the vagina or rectum • Episiotomy (during childbirth) • Lack of exercise and lack of use Women with urge incontinence often have weak pelvic floor muscles in addition to an overactive autonomic

Functional incontinence can be caused by: • Joint pain or muscle weakness • Problems with mobility • Confusion, dementia or delirium • Environmental barriers (i.e., the bathroom is too far away, use of a walker or cane, too many obstacles to navigate around) • Psychological problems such as depression or anger Because many symptoms of urinary incontinence are caused by pelvic floor muscle weakness and dysfunction, a specially trained Women’s Health Physical Therapist is the ideal provider

Successful Breastfeeding:

It’s About Supply and Demand BY BY LEAH MEIDL RN BSN IBCLC

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE AND LACTATION CONSULTANT WOOD COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT It’s no surprise that a majority of pregnant women want to breastfeed. However, after baby is born, the rates of successful breastfeeding are disappointing. In Wisconsin for 2013, 75.5 percent of women initiated breastfeeding, but only 55.5 percent of women were still breastfeeding at six months. 70 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

There are numerous reasons that women give for discontinuing breastfeeding. One of the most commonly given reasons is low milk supply or the mother feeling as though she does not have enough milk. The reality is that most women can make plenty of milk

for their baby, even multiples. However, many of the current practices in our community and health care institutions have a negative impact on breastmilk supply. Milk production is all about supply and demand, what the baby takes out, the mother will make again. The two

main hormones that influence milk supply are Prolactin and Oxytocin. Both of these hormones increase when the baby nurses. Their increased levels cause milk production to increase. It is recommended that breastfed babies nurse frequently, on demand. There is no magic time frame that they follow. When the infant shows early feeding cues, the mother should offer the breast. These early feeding cues include: rooting, mouth movements, sucking on hands and restlessness. The baby should not go too long without feeding because frequent feeds stimulate more milk production! The best ways to assure a good milk supply include: •

Appropriate breastfeeding assessment: Problems with latch lead to problems with supply

Appropriate pediatric follow-up

Universal understanding of how breastfeeding works

Early initiation and adequate breastfeeding (8 to 12 times per day)

No formula or bottle supplementation

Mothers who have concerns about milk supply can be reassured with assistance from a lactation consultant. Some signs that baby is getting plenty of milk include having at least six wet diapers per day and adequate weight gain. In the first few weeks, a regular stooling pattern is also a good indicator. Some common things that mothers view as indicators but are actually not include: •

Baby crying after feeds: Babies cry for a number of reasons

Mother being unable to pump much milk: Pumps take out milk much differently than a baby does. Mom probably has plenty of milk for baby. A lactation consultant can help.

Baby eating more liquid from a bottle after a feed: Babies will often take more liquid, especially from a bottle, even after they are already full.

Health professionals should utilize lactation consultants to assist breastfeeding women. There are a number of consultants in Wood County. Call 715-421-8911 or email wcbc@outlook.com. There is also a nationwide initiative for hospitals to become breastfeeding friendly (babyfriendly); for more information, visit: http://www.babyfriendlyusa.org/

RUNNING,

My Only Medication BY SHARON BEILKE

W

hen I was asked to write an article about running, I have to admit, my cheeks flushed a little bit. Maybe Jim (the editor) thinks I’m actually an accomplished runner. Well, I’m not. I’m a mother of four active children, a physical therapist that reads too many medical journals, and together that gives you this 46-year-old woman that is trying to stay active and well. The bottom line is, I love to run. This simple activity of placing one foot in front of the other for miles and miles on end has kept my head on straight and my weight in check through many years of stress. The only activity that I can do 365 days a year and it doesn’t matter where I am. I just step out the door and away we go. I doubt you’re interested in my cardiovascular fitness and goals. The role that running plays in my profes72 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

SHARON BEILKE

sional life is impossible to measure. When I have a runner as a client and they confide in me that they are “going crazy” because they can’t run, I know what they are talking about. Being a runner engages me at a different level, I can’t wait for them to tell me they are out there again pounding the miles. It’s not about just being interested; the firstperson experience literally translates into greater skills. Anyone can read a ton about running mechanics, shoes, stretching and race preparation. You can even research injuries but having hip pain strike you every week at mile 16 while training for a marathon and working through it with different stretches, changing my stride length, and even changing the way I warm up, now that is really understanding the condition. These types of experiences allow me to get personal with every runner that comes into my clinic.

I know a lot about the shoulder, too. I study it in depth more and more every year because I find it fascinating. Will I ever understand and have the same first person knowledge in the mechanics of drawing back a bow. No, I will not. I will never get the reps that are needed to apply my knowledge. I get those hunters better but it’s not the same. There are many reasons to choose a health care professional. When you find someone that shares or has had similar goals, that person will be invested in you. I cannot finish this short article without sharing with you some interesting research. I told you I read too much of this stuff. Steven Blair published “Physical inactivity: the biggest public health problem in the 21st century” in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, January 2009 Vol 43 No. 1. This article has continued

to generate interest and we are coming to realize that inactivity is more dangerous than smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes and even hypertension. It’s important to understand that weight loss is not the most important result of activity. Many people improve their wellness without significant weight loss. Stay focused on improving wellness. I run to stay healthy mentally and physically. Many people take drugs for high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, and weight loss. I continue to take my pill 57 times a week. My pill requires shoes, proper clothing, and a dog leash. If you’re interested in an exercise prescription, find a Physical Therapist with a desire to take you down this road. We are the movement experts for a reason. Sharon Beilke is a personal trainer at Physical Therapy Associates in Stevens Point.

Wasabi restaurant offers dinner, show BY ANN LIEBMANN, FOR YOU MAGAZINE

80 | YOU | SUMMER 2016

WESTON - How many times have you said “I wish there was a new restaurant in the Wausau area”? Well guess what? Your wish has been granted! Wasabi Teppanyaki & Sushi Bar has opened for business in Weston in the former Ravioli’s space. The owners have a thriving Japanese restaurant in Marshfield and decided to expand (yay!) to the Wausau area. They have installed four teppanyaki tables that can seat 10 people each and a full sushi bar. The evening we visited, our party consisted of four people and we joined a group of six others at our table. The wait for our chef to finish cooking for another table was fairly significant, but we chalked that up to the fact that they had only been open for a week. Tony Tsai (our chef and co-owner of Wasabi) explained that he prefers to train his own chefs to ensure quality and consistency and that is in the works. I must say that the wait was worth our while. We chose to concentrate on the teppanyaki portion of the menu and save sushi for another time (which will be very very soon). The choices are diverse and there is something for everyone. Proteins include chicken, lamb, walleye, salmon, scallops, sole, a couple cuts of steak and tofu. Each dinner includes two shrimp, rice, soup, salad and vegetables along with almost any combination of protein. We ordered a tempura shrimp appetizer to share while we chatted with the other folks at our table and to keep our stomachs from grumbling during the wait. If you have never experienced a Japanese Teppanyaki meal, you are in for a treat. A good chef will give you not only a terrific meal but put on a show, as well, and Tony did not disappoint. We ordered a well-rounded selection of meals that included the sliced lamb, salmon, shrimp and ribeye. Cooking multiple meals for 10 people is a challenge and since it is done on the spot, you will not get a plate full of everything all at once. A handful of shrimp are cooked while the chef keeps up a banter with everyone at the table. Lots of jokes and good-natured ribbing are part of the deal, so be prepared to relax

and laugh at yourself and your tablemates. Next, the proteins are sliced and cooked with a lot of flair, high flames and clanging spatulas. Customers receive their choice cooked to their preference. I have to stop here and say that of the several options we ordered I was surprised to be totally blown away by the salmon. Never been too much of a fan, but this was phenomenal. The lamb beef and shrimp were all very tasty as well, and we didn’t let a single bite go to waste. Our table companions were veterans of the Marshfield location and let us in on the miso dressing “ secret.” You get a small amount of this in a dipping dish at the beginning of the meal. You’ll want more ... lots more. We found ourselves squeezing copious amounts of miso onto our bowls of rice and repeatedly telling our chef how fabulous it was. Just sayin’. Anyway, back to the grill … next up come the vegetables, which are grilled to caramelization and scooped onto each plate. An onion volcano is set alight on the grill as a grand finale to the meal, and you’ll consider trying to eat the scoop of ice cream that is placed in front of you, but I bet you don’t have

I will tell you that you need reservations for Wasabi, at least for the teppanyaki tables, and to prepare for a couple of hours at least for the meal. Get a group together or invite your favorite dining companion and go for really good food and a really fun evening. Personal chef Ann Liebmann of Wausau operates Time Savor, an inhome meal preparation service.

LOCAL AUTHOR LISA BOERO Releases Nerdy Girls Book #3

P

lanning a wedding is challenging for a normal bride-to-be, but when it comes to Liz Howe it can be downright deadly. Back with book three of her popular Nerdy Girls series, local author Lisa Boero shares how Liz Howe balances her upcoming nuptials and solving a cold case turned hot in “Kidnappers & Nerdy Girls Tie The Knot.” Nerdy Girls stars protagonist Liz Howe as a St. Louis lawyer with unique detective skills harnessed from a diagnosis of face-blindness. Because her brain isn’t able to process what faces look like, she has perfected other ways of recognizing who is who. This unique observational ability extends into detective work, something that causes her fiancé (an actual detective named James Paperelli) both admiration and worry. As if trying to find the perfect white dress, organize a wedding in her hometown of Marshfield, Wisconsin, and tactfully manage the religious divides and disdain of her future in laws wasn’t enough, Liz also is challenged by two unrelated murders. The suspicious death of a former classmate and the long-ago disappearance of a client’s granddaughter come to the forefront just as she is preparing for the biggest day of her life. Between confronting a killer and getting a bridal manicure, it might take a miracle for Liz Howe to make it to church on time. “I had this idea of doing a book with two mysteries - one here and one in St. Louis - with similar solutions,” said Boero of the latest installment. “I also liked the idea of Liz working on cold cases that other people had given up on.” Between picking out flowers and finding a reception venue, Liz finds herself immersed in the reading list found in a 15-year-old kidnap victim’s diary, one that could perhaps be the only clue to a generations-old mystery. “I was interested in the idea of what you read being a reflection of who you

BY BREANNA SPETH

are. I think you learn a lot about a person if you ask them what they like to read,” said Boero of this particular plot point. “I am a reader and so having a mystery that turns on knowing certain books appeals to me,” she added. Boero, who is happily married herself, enjoyed balancing romance and mystery in this novel as Liz tries to solve crimes while planning a wedding. “The wedding planning played into all of that plot dynamic because Liz is going back and forth between her two worlds in order to pull off a wedding that won’t embarrass her,” she said. “And I had fun imagining wedding planning with horrible in-laws. It really ups the ante.” She added that she drew upon stories she’d heard from friends about how hard it is when you are marrying into a very different family with different expectations. “It was fun to contrast the ritzy Paperellis with the down-to-earth Howes and put Liz in the middle,” she said. Unlike Liz, Boero had an easy time

planning her own wedding because of her mom’s support. “My mom and I are close and we were on the same page when it came to most things,” she recalled. “I was working full time when we planned it though, so I had to trust her to make major decisions for me, so I could relate to Liz’s struggles planning a wedding long distance.” Boero also enjoyed exploring Liz and James’ relationship more in this book. “I love that in this book you get a better look at what makes both Liz and James tick,” she said. “In my head, they are complex multifaceted personalities and it is great to explore their issues on paper for readers to get to know them.” Boero finished a draft of book three immediately after drafting book two, but the editing process was extensive. “Every book has its own issues. The big one for Kidnappers was balancing the mystery aspect with the wedding storyline,” said Boero. “This is a long book and I wanted to make sure that I kept the reader going with both halves of the story at the same time.” Balancing a family and a full-time job as an attorney, Boero enjoys writing in her free time with the hopes of publishing two books per year- one Nerdy Girls book and one that is something else. “I have a draft of the fourth book, but it is rough and so it needs a little time to percolate,” she said. “I don’t want to scrimp on quality just to get something out.” With each book, Boero feels she improves as a writer. “This book helped me to really work on pacing and saying just what you need to say and no more,” she said. “Editing is 100% necessary 100% of the time.” To her avid fan base, Lisa sends thanks and encouragement to “hang on” as she works as fast as she can to release the next book. “It is an uphill struggle, but my great fans make all the effort worthwhile,” she said. you local woman to know STEFANIE TRYBA, 34, is a Project SEARCH instructor at Aspirus Riverview Hospital and works for the Wisconsin Rapids School District as a special education teacher.

My work: My current job duties include instruction of 12 interns who have an intellectual disability, ages 18-24. In the mornings, I instruct them on work and independent living topics such as budgeting, interviewing, applying for jobs, social skill behaviors, etc. The remainder of my days are spent in the work field job coaching the students in their internships. What led me here: I was enrolled in a class in high school where the class was made up of regular and special education students. Together we worked to learn life skills, and as a regular education student I was expected to teach and plan a unit in the class. I truly believe this is when I realized teaching was for me! I am very passionate about working with students with disabilities and even more passionate about helping them find their place in the community. Family: I have a wonderful husband named Patrick. He works on the family

farm assisting with two farms in Junction City and Milladore. He also is a mechanic on the family farm for his dad’s shop. We have three amazing children. Our oldest, Case Kendall, is 6 and she marches to the beat of her own drum. Our middle child, Ford Lucas, will be 5 in July. He is a sensitive and funny boy. Our youngest, Kinze Bell, is very head strong and knows what she wants! She is 1 year old. Something unique about my kids is their names. Their first names are all tractors and their middle names are motor oils. My role model: My mother-in-law, Gail Tryba. I have never met a more funloving woman who works her tail off to take care of everyone. My greatest achievement: My greatest personal achievement so far is graduating from college with my bachelor’s and master’s degree. I would tell my 20-year-old self:

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE…I wish I would have saved more. You don’t realize it when you are young how important saving is. Life’s most defining moment: The most defining moment in my life by far would be becoming a mom. I honestly always knew I wanted to get married and have a family, but until I got pregnant for the first time did not realize what an affect it really had on me. I treasure my children and learn so much from them every day. They ground me. They surprise me. They enlighten me. My inspiration: I find my inspiration in my students. I see how hard they work to fit in and show others that they have good qualities and strengths and I just smile.

local woman to know you PATRICIA A. BAKER (Trish Baker) 56, is an attorney, clerk of circuit court, constitutional officer, school board member and village trustee in Stevens Point. My work: As the Clerk of Circuit Courts I am the legal custodian of all court records. I am an elected member of the Stevens Point Area Public School District Board of Education and Chair of the Educational Services Committee. I am also the current President of the Rotary Club of Greater Portage County and Vice President of the Portage County Bar Association. I serve as the Treasurer of the Board of Directors for MidState Independent Living Consultants, a Director for the Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Counties Association Steering Committee on Judicial and Public Safety. What led me here: I grew up in La Crosse and moved to Stevens Point in 1998. We had looked at a variety places to live in central Wisconsin but really fell in love with Park Ridge and Iverson Park. Family: My son Joey is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. My other son graduates from the University of Minnesota in mid-May, with a degree in bio-medical engineering. My stepson Craig works in construction and is a United States Coast Guard Reservist and my other stepson Corey is finishing up his teaching degree in music at

the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. My husband is a civil engineer for the WisDOT and builds roads. My role model: Jill Falstad, Branch I Circuit Court Judge in Marathon County. She is an incredible person that works hard, does what is right – over what might be easy – and always embodies the concept of integrity. My key to success: Success requires perseverance, hard work and always a positive outlook. Success is the ability to stand back and have a global viewpoint and to identify opportunities for improvement - especially when in the shadow of failure. My greatest achievement: Raising successful children that are solid citizens, kind people, and embrace personal goals of public service. I would tell my 20-yearold self: Carpe Diem! Seize the day and aspire to accomplish the biggest dreams possible. As a young person you have a golden period of time when you can focus all your energy and perseverance on accomplishing those goals. When you get a little older life has a way of throwing curve balls that make achieving those goals more difficult. Life’s most defining moment: When my first child

was born, it was like falling in love all over again. My inspiration: Every single time someone thanks me for helping them through a complicated legal situation, I feel fulfilled. My guilty pleasure: I love the Raw Dog at Belts made with chocolate ice cream! And any form of dark chocolate and dark red wine, preferably together.

or some viewers, a painting of hanging dead game is bewildering. They might wonder what the artist’s motivation was to paint such subjects and cannot understand what is beautiful or endearing about dead birds suspended by their feet. The history of art offers several explanations. Game pieces date from the 17th century when Dutch artists tested their painting skills by mimicking nature. Readily available items including fruit, fish, and game birds were natural subjects, and pottery, glass, silver, and tableware also sometimes were depicted. Artists frequently orchestrated elaborate compositions to demonstrate their ability to render varying textures, patterns, and shapes. Paintings featuring game typically were not commissioned since hunting was not yet common practice in The Netherlands. That came later. The 19th century saw an increased interest in game painting. As hunting became a leisurely pursuit, not solely a means for stocking the larder, artists were engaged to record trophies of the hunt. Such masculine themes appealed to gentlemen hunters, who used these paintings to decorate offices and studies. Magazines, books, and newspapers also featured game paintings to illustrate articles on sporting pursuits. George Cope made his reputation painting game still lifes. His work is distinguished by the central bunching of objects in the composition, and the detail achieved in the panels that serve as backgrounds for his game pieces. you in your words

I’m graduating, so I guess the best advice I’ve ever gotten is just keep going. It’s going to be OK.

I think the best piece of advice that anyone has ever given me is just be yourself and don’t care what anybody thinks. The only reason why I really like that advice is because I want to be who I want to be because the inside will never change. I want be able to express myself with whatever I want to do like having piercings or tattoos or anything like that and just not care what people think about it because I can always change my appearance as to what society wants me to be but it’s very hard to change who you are on the inside when you want to feel what you do on the outside. The advice of being who you want to be really is more than just a quote or something to say when someone’s down. It’s more of an inspiring piece to be who you really are.
