Engaged? start planning now! A to-do list for brides-to-be Family Features

The decision to get married is the first of many big decisions you will be making in the weeks and months to come. Here are some things to consider right away: Pick a date. Talk with your fiancé and family (and your fiancé’s family) about potential wedding dates to ensure the important people in both your lives will be able to take part. Select your guests. The number of guests you invite will directly influence the cost of your wedding. Set a budget. Budgeting for your wedding is crucial, as this will have a great impact on every other aspect of your day, as well as your honeymoon. Plan for a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses. Choose a location. Because most popular bridal spots are just that — popular — you may want to start searching for a location quickly. Organize the bridal party. Make careful decisions about who you want supporting you leading up to the big day, and who will be displayed in front of everyone in your life.
Pick a style. Many brides choose wedding styles that are reflected in their save-thedates, invitations, ceremonies, receptions and thank-you cards. Choosing a theme and color scheme in the beginning will help narrow down options later. Hire a caterer. Take into account the dietary needs of your guests by offering a variety of menu options, including a vegetarian dish.

The Big Decisions
2014
P
Preparing for the big day means planning a multitude of details; everything from the flower arrangements to that something blue must be decided upon well in advance of the ceremony. Here are some tips to help ensure your big day goes off without a hitch.
Order the cake. Whether you choose a large multi-tiered cake or cupcakes, remember to keep your budget in mind— and pick flavors you and your fiancé truly enjoy. Make the announcement. Decide how you want to let the community know of your planned nuptials. Do you want to take professional engagement photos? Do you plan to contact your local paper? Will you include a link to a wedding day website on your save-thedate or your wedding invitations? Get the gown. On your wedding day, everyone will be awaiting a glimpse of your gown. Listen to your instincts and choose a gown that “feels right” and reflects your personality and style. Planning continued on page 8 >>>

Dress your party. Once you have chosen the wedding dress of your dreams, speak with your fiancé about his wishes for his suit, as well as the bridal party attire. Hire a photographer. Choose your professional photographer wisely. With a walk down the aisle, father/ daughter dance and toast, your father is sure to get photographed, but your mother might get overlooked. Make sure to ask the photographer to get shots of your mother throughout the day as well. Choose your flowers. Once you set the date, discuss with your florists which flowers are in season to help narrow down your selection. You may love tulips, but if you have a winter wedding, they may be hard to come by, and may be more expensive. Book the entertainment. Do you want a DJ or a live band? Talk with your fiancé about your music preferences, as well as the types of tunes you want played at your reception to keep your guests on the dance floor.

Insure your engagement and wedding rings against loss, damage, theft or mysterious disappearance. According to a survey conducted by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, 44 percent of married women either don’t insure their engagement ring, or don’t know for certain whether their engagement and wedding rings are insured. Make sure your marriage license, travel documentation and insurance information are ready to go and stored in a safe place in advance of the wedding day. Practice reciting your vows and speeches until you feel comfortable. Wear your wedding heels around the house to “break them
Remember to ask for help. Designate members of your family or close friends to specific assignments.
Wedding Day Details Provide bottled water for your wedding party. To ensure no one gets over-heated, hide water near your bridal party during the ceremony for emergencies. Choose meaningful gifts for your wedding party. Necklaces, earrings or bracelets are great for bridesmaids; cufflinks are perfect for groomsmen. Create individual envelopes for tipping drivers, caterers, musicians, etc. Separate envelopes will help ensure you don’t forget anyone.
Plan for weather In case of rain — Order a tent or choose a venue with indoor space for last-minute protection from the elements. Offer extra umbrellas to usher people from their vehicles to the venue.

“Communication is a key part of a strong marriage, and it’s also the basis for a strong financial partnership,” says Barrett Burns, president and CEO of VantageScore Solutions. “Being proactive before and planning ahead of the wedding while sticking to a financial plan will help guard against common financial mistakes that can occur early in a couple’s life together.”
To start your new life together with a strong financial foundation, check off a few important money to-dos before you say “I do!”
1. Have the debt talk All couples must have the debt talk. It may not be romantic, but it is necessary in order to plan a bright future together. Be open and honest about debt, savings and spending habits, even if they are less than perfect. Financial turmoil is one of the top reasons cited for divorce, so understanding each other’s finances today and what goals you have for the future will help reduce stress on your partnership. With the average college student graduating with $26,600 in student loan debt, according to The Project on Student Debt, young couples need to create a plan for managing debt and saving for the future.
L a k e shor e W eddi ng Pl a n n er
that’s the promise most couples make when they face oneanother at the altar. When it comes to finances and young love, it can be easy to fall into some common pitfalls that can haunt couples long after the wedding day.

2. Control wedding spending The “big day” is a defining moment in life, but it’s important for couples to remember it’s just one day of many that they will spend together. Weddings and related events cost a whopping $28,427 on average, according to theknot.com, and that doesn’t even include the honeymoon. “When it comes to young couples planning a dream wedding, the plastic tends to be relied upon,” says Burns. “It’s important to be realistic about how much you can spend. Becoming over extended on credit cards is a common mistake, and this type of high-interest debt is not the wisest way to begin your lives together.” The best course of action when it comes to wedding planning is to create a budget and stick to it. It’s not necessarily bad to use credit, especially if you can take advantage of a credit card rewards program, but Burns advises only charging or borrowing what you know you can pay back in a reasonable amount of time as keeping high balances and missing payments can have significantly negative impacts on your credit score, which in turn leads to stress.

3. Work together to build a positive credit profile Married couples do not have joint credit files or credit scores. Each individual has their credit files with the credit reporting companies and their own credit scores, but in some cases like when joint accounts and co-signed loans are created, the actions of one can impact the other. “It’s common for younger people who are just beginning their financial independence to not have much, if any, credit history. It’s important to be proactive and take steps to build a positive credit profile and score so you can demonstrate to lenders that you are a good manager of credit,” says Burns. Get a copy of your credit report and resolve any issue you may have with the information presented in it. If you have a limited credit history, carefully consider the benefits of joint accounts, but keep in mind that the positive financial actions like paying bills on-time and keeping balances low, as well as actions that can have negative impacts like missing payments will influence the couples’ individual credit scores. “The importance of paying bills on

Another important step in building credit after a marriage is to make sure that all financial lenders are aware of name changes. “If you choose to change your name after you are married, make sure all your accounts have your current information, otherwise positive actions may not get reported correctly or in a timely manner,” Burns says.
4. Shop around for rates “Whether you’re taking out a personal loan or selecting a credit card, you absolutely must shop around for rates,” advises Burns. “Don’t just take the easiest or first
option. You want to get the best deal available with low interest rates and reasonable terms.” When shopping for rates, Burns notes to do so within a two week period of time. Credit inquiries from auto and mortgage lenders and credit cards issued from banks and credit unions are only counted once if done in a two week period causing just a slight decrease to credit scores.
L a k e shor e W eddi ng Pl a n n er
time cannot be understated,” says Burns. “A single missed payment can drop each person’s credit score 80 to 100 points. This can affect a couple’s ability to get the best interest rates and terms for a loan.”
Finally, couples soon to be married or those that recently were married can also test their knowledge about credit scores at www.CreditScoreQuiz.org, a website created by VantageScore Solutions and its partner, Consumer Federation of America, one of the largest consumer advocates in the country. ●

}
In between the guest list, the flowers and the perfect three-tier cake, it can be hard to find time to shop for your wedding rings. However, it is important to remember that most of the wedding details are fleeting and gone after a few hours of enjoyment, while your rings are enjoyed forever. So, whether you are having a smaller gathering or a more traditional affair, this important to-do on your event checklist should not be overlooked, especially since your rings mark your commitment to one another and will last a lifetime.
2014
• Create a budget. There are many de-
tails to consider when planning a wedding that can quickly drain your budget. It is important to set aside money for a lifelong symbol like your wedding bands. Not sure how much to budget? Consider that in 2006, couples spent an average of $2,079 on wedding bands, according to the CN American Wedding Study. And since the age-old rule for purchasing an engagement ring is to spend two months salary, plan to spend one month’s salary for the two wedding bands. Check out the “Budget Calculator” at www.TheKnot.com.
• Shop together. It is a good idea to
shop for rings together. In fact, 80 percent of couples do, which isn’t a surprise since your rings, which don’t have to match, should reflect your personal styles and tastes.
• Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last
minute to go shopping for your wedding bands, they’re simply too important. Plan to start shopping for your rings six months prior to your “I do’s.” Not only do you need time to research and shop, but you also need to allot time for custom orders, sizing and engraving.
• Invest in quality.
Because you want your ring to last a lifetime, it is important to put thought into the quality of metal you choose. Platinum 950 is the most durable precious metal and will last a lifetime. It’s 30 times more rare than gold, and for wedding bands set with diamonds, its natural whiteness will ensure the diamonds sparkle and stay secure. It is no wonder that Hollywood’s A-list designers such as Tacori, DeBeers, Ritani and Kwiat are all choosing Platinum in their designs. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a star to own a Platinum ring. Platinum engagement and wedding rings are available for a wide variety of budgets -; making it an affordable luxury. Some resources that offer popular price points include Lieberfarb, Scott Kay and Blue Nile. “As the ultimate metal, Platinum’s unmatched durability and beauty make it a top pick among designers and 81 percent of brides,” said Michael O’Connor. ●

You want everything to be picture perfect for your wedding, including your smile. But like everything else about your big day, that perfect smile could require some work ahead of time. teeth ground down sounds like it would put a damper on all the joyful planning, here’s good news: Lumineers (www.lumineers.com) are now used by thousands of dentists nationwide and can be applied in two short, pain-free appointments. Unlike other veneer procedures, Lumineers are so strong and thin that they don’t require removal of sensitive tooth structure. The procedure is quick, painless and even reversible.
Makeup: Women with warm skin tones look best in makeup with pink, coral, peach, amber, brown and red with yellow undertones. If you have a cool skin tone, choose pink, berry, lilac, mauve or red with blue undertones.
Skin: Make your face glow with a good cleansing program. Use a cleanser that’s appropriate for your skin type in the morning, makeup remover and cleanser at night and a daily moisturizer. Use a gentle facial scrub once a week.
Hair: If you’re planning to change your hairstyle or color, experiment several months before the wedding so you have time to correct any mistakes.
18
Nails: If you’re a nail-biter, get weekly manicures to keep your nails healthy. Plan your last manicure a couple of days before the big day. Choose a pretty pale pink or splurge on a French manicure, not just because it looks great, but because the chips won’t show as much and are easy to fix. You’ll have beautiful hands for the rehearsal dinner and any other festivities. Don’t forget, practice makes perfect. Schedule a trial run with your hair and makeup artists several days before your wedding, so there are no surprises the day of the ceremony. ●

So how do you make sure the caterer you hire is a great one? By asking the right questions.

A A great caterer will do more than just make good food. He or she will pay great attention to details, making sure the presentation is just right, the food and wine are served at the right temperature, the servers are wellgroomed and attentive and that clean-up is efficient and thorough.

➊ May I have references?
Most caterers get their business from word of mouth. Ask for at least 10 former clients and call as many as you can. Ask questions such as
• Was the caterer easy to work with? • Was the service efficient and nonintrusive? • Was the food delicious, and did it arrive hot? • Were there any problems that came up and how did the caterer deal with them?

➌ Can we sample from a typical wedding menu?
Catering can be a large part of your wedding budget. Make sure you know what it is you’ll be getting for your money. Take your spouse-to-be and a friend with you to the tasting so that you can get varied opinions. Some caterers will charge a tasting fee, but it’s worth it.
➍ May I see photographs of your table displays?
Some caterers who provide buffets or food stations include floral arrangements and other decorations. It’s also a good idea to discuss your color theme so that decorations and floral arrangements coordinate
➎ What does the price per person include?
Is the cost strictly for food, or does it cover tables, chairs, linens, tableware, punch service, table displays, etc.?
➏ What other fees do you charge?
Are tips and taxes included in the price? Some caterers will charge a cake-cutting fee or corking fee for wines. Make sure you get all fees in writing up front.
➐ Do you handle special menu requests?
You may have guests with special menu needs, such as food allergies, vegan or
kosher requirements. Make sure your caterer will accommodate these needs. Some couples want to have a special family recipe at the reception – grandma’s meatballs or foods from the family’s ethnic traditions. Find out if your caterer will personalize your menu with these kinds of items.
➑ Do you offer cakes?
Ask if your caterer offers wedding and groom’s cakes, and find out if they are included in the price.
➒ Will you pack us a “doggie bag” for after the reception?
Sometimes the wedding couple is so busy at the reception that they have very little time to eat anything. Attentive caterers will prepare small boxes of food for the couple to enjoy when they are finally alone.
➓ What are the payment arrangements?
You need to find out how much of a deposit is required, and if it’s refundable or not. Ask when the final payment is due and what the caterer’s preferred form of payment is. When you finally settle on a caterer, make sure you have a written contract to sign. This guarantees that they will provide the food, timelines and details you discussed. ●

With all the dancing and celebrating they’ll be doing, your guests are sure to work up a thirst. It’s important to calculate the right amount of beverages to buy so you don’t run out. A good rule of thumb is to plan for one drink per person, per hour. You may need more or less depending upon the make-up of your crowd. Lots of kids? You’ll probably need less alcohol and more soft drinks. Plenty of adults who love a good party? You may need to adjust the amount of alcohol accordingly. Here are some averages to give you a starting point:
If you’ll serve cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before the reception, limit this time to an hour or 90 minutes - you don’t want guests filling up before the main event. Estimate three hors d’oeuvres per person, per hour - roughly five per person for the entire time. If your reception will be a cocktail/hors d’oeuvres event without a sit-down dinner, increase your calculations to 12 pieces per guest. If you’re serving a sit-down dinner, one plate per person per course should be your starting point. You may choose to ask the kitchen/caterer to have some extras on hand in case anyone requests seconds or some last-minute guests arrive.
• Beer - Three to four beers per person. • Champagne - Two glasses per person (mostly for the toasts). • Wine - Three quarters of a bottle per person. One bottle of wine or champagne yields about six to seven glasses. • Soft drinks - Three to four servings per person. A 2-liter bottle holds seven to nine drink servings. It’s always good to err on the side of caution and order more than you think you will need - about a third more is standard. Check with your distributor before you order; some will allow you to return unopened bottles.
For the wedding cake, simply tell your baker how many guests will attend and they can recommend the size cake you’ll need. It’s good to estimate more servings than invited guests as some may want seconds or bring last-minute additions to the party. If you’ll serve desserts other than cake, estimate one to two servings per guest.

Personalized or plain, linen or three-ply, wedding napkins are a wedding reception must-have item. It’s hard to imagine going overboard and having too many napkins, but it could happen - and if it does you may find yourself using those napkins at your first anniversary celebration. To ensure your napkin buying is on target with your needs, follow these guidelines: • Two to three cocktail napkins per guest for the bar area. • One cocktail-sized napkin per guest for the cake table. • One and a half dinner or luncheon napkins per guest at the meal table if you won’t be using linen napkins. For example, if you’ll have 100 guests, plan for 150 dinner napkins.
finally, favors This one may seem obvious one favor per guest. In reality, however, you need to allow for
breakage (What if someone drops a box of favors on the way into the reception hall and several shatter?) and guests who may ask to take an extra favor home for a relative or friend who wasn’t able to attend. Increasing your favor purchase by just 10 percent won’t cost that much more, but could allow you to send guests home with an extra favor or two. ●

the decisions
Of course, something’s bound to go wrong the day of your wedding. The cake your aunt made arrives in a mushy pool. The microphone screeches as your best friend does the reading. The officiate loses your vows and tries to “wing it” from memory.

and manners live on in her greatgreat-granddaughter, Anna Post, and The Emily Post Institute. Anna Post has authored multiple books including, “Do I Have to Wear White,” published earlier this year, and answered some of the most common questions about wedding faux pas.

Instead of worrying about the things that might happen, take the time now to avoid the awkward moments you can expect will happen. To help you through some of those tough decisions, we’ve enlisted the help of Emily Post, whose legacy of etiquette
Q: How do you trim the guest list? Anna: If the guest list is too large you have one of two choices: You can extend your budget or you can limit your guest list. Ask yourself, ‘Which is more important, keeping to this vision of “my day” or sticking to our budget?’ If money is not negotiable, which is very common these days, look at how the list is divided. You might let the bride and groom chose 50 percent, and their parents the other half. Q: How do you approach guests that haven’t sent an RSVP? Anna: Call them up and ask. Direct is best, I think, but a kind of direct that doesn’t reveal that they are annoying the pants off you. Plan to make those calls about one week before you really need your final guest list. Q: How do you ask for cash instead of gifts, without sounding greedy? Anna: It’s not wrong to ask for it. It’s wrong to demand it. The choice of gift is always up to the person buying it. That said, most people would like to know what’s really useful to you. If that happens to be cash, traditionally information about your registry was given by word of mouth through close family. Q: Is it OK to get sponsors for your wedding or to ask guests to pay to attend? Anna: Absolutely not OK. The one exception is if you made a private arrangement with a photographer or a vendor to use your photos or whatever for their promotional purposes. It’s defi-

2014 Q: What do you do if someone shows up uninvited? Anna: This is one of the hardest because to turn someone away at the door is very difficult. At this point they’ve put you in a very tough spot. I think the gracious thing is to make room at a table. Follow up later and say, ’I appreciate you came, but it made if very difficult for me.’
Q: If someone is single, are you obligated to include ‘plus-one’ on the invitation? Anna: It’s OK to say no, so long as this person is not engaged, married, life partnered or living together with a significant other. They are a package deal at that point. If someone asks for an exception, it’s best if you be consistent and say no, but end on a high note of ’I hope you understand. I hope you can come.’
Q: How does the couple broach the question, ‘Who’s going to pay for this?’ Anna: It’s common today to have any type of financial mix, especially when family members might be divorced. If the bride and groom know that they need help, it’s best to have these conversations early on. Try to have a loose idea of how large or small the wedding could be and have some possible locations in mind. ●

nitely not OK to put it on the invitation. If money is a concern, cut back on what you are offering. You might not have a full bar, but just champagne. I would also caution against having a cash bar. You’re essentially passing the cost onto your guests who are already paying to travel to your wedding and purchasing gifts.

Modern brides put unique slant on
‘something old, something new’
S
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something - very unique. To make a wedding both fun and sophisticated, modern brides give the old wedding adage a playful twist. If you’re planning your wedding, or helping someone special plan her own, here are some modern variations on the tradition:

something old: Something old represents the bride’s past. Personalize this tradition by incorporating a small memento from you and your fiance’s past together. Did you keep something from one of your favorite dates? Maybe you still have the ticket stub from the first concert you attended together, or the wine cork from your first date. Brides are tucking these small items into their bouquets to bring them good luck. At a special moment during the evening, you can reveal the keepsake to your husband and remember just how far you’ve come as a couple.
something new: Scent creates powerful memories and brides today are taking notice. For your wedding, find a new fragrance that perfectly fits your special moment. For years to come, the fragrance will remind you and your husband of your wedding day. A wedding calls for a memorable scent like twirl by kate spade new york, perfect for this joyous and festive occasion. A fresh floral bouquet mingles with pink watermelon and red currant, while luminous musks and a touch of French macaroon add that wink of surprise that will keep your husband-to-be enamored and your guests intrigued.

something borrowed: To inherit luck, tradition says that something borrowed should be from a person who has a happy marriage. Thinking outside the box may mean that your something borrowed isn’t an actual item. Perhaps you want to honor your grandparents on your wedding and “borrow” parts of the vows they said so many years ago. Or maybe your best friend has a marriage philosophy you admire that you can print on the dessert napkins for all guests to enjoy. Feeling musical? Ask your parents what song played during their first dance and surprise them by borrowing it for your own.
something blue: Looking for something fun for your guests to take home as a thank you token? Wrap up blue lollipops and or other blue candies in gift bags with a special note thanking them for being part of your special day.
Whether you’re considering a destination wedding celebration or looking for that special honeymoon destination, we know quiet romantic spots in every corner of the world. Let our experienced vacation specialists find one JUST for you!
