Careful Thought & Planning LED TO THIS COUPLE’S PERFECT DAY Story by Ann Grote-Pirrung Photos by Karen Ann Photography

For Jessica and Kenny Martinson, memories of their July wedding are still fresh and vibrant. And better still, they remain perfect, as the couple said they wouldn’t do anything differently. “It was the best day of our lives,” Kenny said. And as much as their wedding was a heavenly delight, their meeting had a more down-to-earth — and modern — beginning. “We met on Match.com,” Jessica said of the online matchmaking service that brought the two of them together about two-and-a-half years ago. “That stuff really works,” Kenny said. “I was pretty new to it, but I liked the idea of it … of a social network.” Apparently, it not only “really worked,” it worked pretty swiftly as well. The couple got engaged in September 2014, a mere 10 months before their nuptials. According to “The Knot,” an engagement and wedding magazine and online site, the average engagement lasts around 14 months. wedding continued on page 8 >>>

Kenny attributes their 10-month engagement to Jessica’s superior organizing skills. Within the first two weeks after their engagement, Jessica and Kenny had reserved the church at St. Peter Claver in Sheboygan for their service, with a reception to be held at Victorian Village in Elkhart Lake. Both Kenny and Jessica wanted to avoid the typical hotel atmosphere for a reception. Victorian Village fitted their needs to a T. “The atmosphere was great,” Jessica said. “Being right on the lake was beautiful. We had a lot of awesome pictures.” While Jessica is from Manitowoc, Kenny is from Columbus, Wisconsin, and he was not familiar with the Elkhart Lake area. “I really liked it,” Kenny said. “I had never heard of Victorian Village. I had never been to Elkhart before. I found it to be a hidden gem in Wisconsin. The atmosphere was great and the staff at Victorian Village was very accommodating.” Kenny and Jessica had one tasting with the staff at Victorian Village before deciding on a sit-down dinner complete with slowly braised beef and chicken cordon bleu. “The cost of the plate (for a sitdown dinner) wasn’t that much more than a buffet, so we figured we might

as well make it a little bit more intimate and easier on the guests,” Jessica said. Speaking of price, when asked if they had a budget when planning their wedding, Kenny answered honestly, “I did, but it just went out the window.” wedding continued on page 10 >>>

The couple paid for their own wedding, and Jessica said, “I think it meant that much more because we were the ones who were paying for it.” Kenny added, “Mostly we said, ‘Ah, we’re only going to do this once in our lives, so we might as well make it worth it.’ And everybody that we hired was fantastic. We couldn’t have had a more perfect day.” The couple said their wedding planning was made easier by securing the services of Lisa Schwarz of A Schwarz Event in New Holstein. “She wasn’t our wedding planner, but she did organize all the centerpieces and f lowers and decorations at the church and the reception so we didn’t have to worry about anybody decorating, so that made it easy,” Jessica said. Another good choice, according to Jessica and Kenny, was their photographer, Karen Ann Photography of Two Rivers. “I just knew of her from growing up in Manitowoc,” Jessica said. “It was pretty cool. At sunset, we (the wedding party) went down to the beach with our photographer and had a champagne toast on the beach, so she got some pretty cool pictures of that.” Their photographer also recommended the DJ service they hired, A Personal Touch DJ Services from Milwaukee. wedding continued on page 12 >>>

“He was very professional,” Kenny said. “He had a nice system where you get your own personal website where you make your own playlist.”

“It was a very nice personal touch,” Jessica said.

Jessica added: “It really helped that all the vendors knew each other. They all knew each other and worked together, so they all talked and we didn’t have to do that much.

With about 130 guests, and five attendants for both the bride and groom, plus a f lower girl and ring bearer, Kenny described the wedding as an “extravagant, intimate wedding. We had a lot of stuff, we were constantly busy doing different things, but we had a smaller group with close friends and family,” he said.

“Have people who know each other,” she advised. Jessica said “yes to the dress” at Edith’s in Fond du Lac. “It was the third dress I tried on.” As for Kenny, he said his choice “went swimmingly,” which basically meant that Jessica chose the tuxes and he was happy to accommodate. A popular personal touch that helped make their wedding memorable involved having members of their families provide a “cookie buffet,” that included all the most popular cookies from their families.

Kenny added, “It was a really nice way to include everybody.”

Kenny and Jessica said everyone they worked with, from the staff at Pier 17 in Sheboygan, where they had their rehearsal dinner, to the staff at Victorian Village, and all the other professionals who helped make their wedding memorable did an incredible job. “Everybody that we worked with was phenomenal,” Kenny said. “I don’t think there is one thing we would have done differently.” l

Avoiding Nuptial Nightmares Tips to remain a stress-free bride-to-be By Meghan Diemel

14 | l ak e sh ore w eddin g pl anner | 2 016

Every bride goes through stress

after getting engaged, whether it takes just a few hours, or perhaps a few days. Eventually, the excitement is replaced by the continuous sounds of friends and family putting forth their opinion about everything, from flowers to filet mignon. As the list of tasks grows, Pinterest boards multiply and the time flies by, brides need to remember to make themselves a priority if they want to remain stress-free. “As a new bride myself, I remember the stresses of wedding planning all too clearly,” says Kimberly Van Abel, LCP-TL (Licensed Professional Counselor), of Prevea Behavioral Care in Green Bay. “It is definitely hard to take everyone’s input and keep everyone happy. Word to the wise: Accept that you will have to compromise on a few details.” While often family and friends are willing to step forward to help anyway they can, including financially, Van Abel cautions brides to set boundaries in regard to how much of their advice will be utilized. “At the end of the day, their opinions are greatly appreciated, but it is the bride and groom’s decision,” she states. “If for some reason there is conflict between family paying for items and what the couple wants, try to be reasonable and come to a compromise that both parties are happy with.” Jessica Hanner Weed, owner of FAB Events and Planning in Crivitz, says she can’t emphasize enough the importance of a thorough itinerary. It’s a key piece to reducing planning stress. “It’s the glue that sticks the wedding together and puts everyone on the same page,” she explains. “It’s essential to help the flow of the day, the week and weekend of the wedding.” Hanner Weed says a bride’s priority should be the wonderful memories to be made during

the wedding festivities – not attempting to do everything yourself. Enlisting the help of a planner or bridesmaid to serve as the day-of contact, and letting professionals take care of most of the wedding’s details – like food and flowers – keeps unnecessary worries and hassles at bay. “As a bride you’re incredibly busy no matter what, with family and guests, so it’s really nice to have someone to field those simple questions on the day of the wedding,” she furthers. “There are so many other elements happening that a simple call to a planner or bridesmaid can take the stress off the bride.” Prolonged stress can do more than just hinder your memories of the overall nuptial experience, says Van Abel. It can lead to a condition called distress, which is the body’s negative response to stress. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, lack of motivation and problems sleeping. “Distress can cause other mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression and general moodiness,” she states. “When these things happen, we find difficulty in controlling emotional outbursts, concentration and our overall ability to prioritize and handle life’s little curve balls. “When all is said and done and the wedding is over, it isn’t about the dress, flowers or centerpieces,” adds Van Abel. “The only thing that everyone will remember is how happy the new couple is and their excitement for your new life together.”

Five Questions to Ask Before Marriage

Family Features

Marriage is a milestone in life; yet, many enter into the next phase without asking their spouse some vital questions about money. If you are among the soon-to-be wed, consider starting a conversation using the questions below. Couples who plan their expenses ahead of time are more likely to enjoy their earnings, and less likely to need credit repair intervention. 2 0 | l ak e sh ore w eddin g pl anner | 2 016

Females are often portrayed as materialistic or over-the-top when it comes to their big day, but recent findings from an online Harris Poll tell a different story. Surprisingly, the study found that twice the number of men stated they would or did go into debt to pay for their dream wedding.

1. How do you view money? This is a loaded question, but your fiancé’s answer will help you understand their perspective and how it aligns with yours. Here are a few conversation starters on the subject: • How do you budget your money? • Are you meticulous about your bills and expenses, or are you comfortable to just “wing it?” • What’s the most you would ever spend on a home, car, piece of clothing, etc.?

The study also found that both men and women valued financial responsibility. In fact, 91% indicated a preference for entering marriage debt-free as opposed to having a dream wedding.

2. How should we budget for a family? Kids are expensive, especially if you haven’t planned for them. Talk to your partner about how many kids you would both like to have. Plan for child living expenses and how they will impact your budget, i.e. clothes, food, activities, medical expenses, schooling, etc.

“Marriage is a lifelong commitment built on trust, clear communication and honesty,” said John Heath, Directing Attorney for Lexington Law. “While some may find financial discussions unnecessary, understanding each other intimately in terms of what you both bring to the table – be it wealth or debt – will strengthen your relationship and help to avoid potentially serious friction to your marriage down the road.”

3. How should we communicate about money? Some couples are content to let one person handle the finances, and others like to split up the bills and share household responsibilities. Regardless of what you decide, it is important to have a plan in place before getting married.

Men, women and weddings

Discussing money matters So how does one go into a marriage with a solid financial standing? Those soon-to-be-wed couples who converse openly about their finances are more likely to enjoy their big day with an understanding of their mate’s views on money. The experts at Lexington Law offer these questions every newly engaged couple should ask before the big day:

4. What should we do when we disagree about spending? You and your spouse won’t agree on everything. In fact, you may completely disagree on how to spend, save, and generally manage your money. The question is: What should you do when these disagreements arise? Avoiding the subject will put you at greater risk for financial (and marital) trouble. There’s no easy answer for this one, but presenting the topic during your conversation is a good start. 5. Do you have any debts that I should be aware of? Secrets aren’t the best addition to a marriage, especially when it comes to debt. Be sure you and your soonto-be put the credit cards on the table before walking down the aisle. Marriage is a life partnership; start by dealing with your debt together. You’ll head into your new life as a married couple with ease when you have an open and honest dialog about your financial situation. For more tips for managing your money, or your credit, visit www.LexingtonLaw.com.

Preparing for the big day means planning a multitude of details; everything from the flower arrangements to that something blue must be decided upon well in advance of the ceremony. Here are some tips to help ensure your big day goes off without a hitch.

The Big Decisions The decision to get married is the first of many big decisions you will be making in the weeks and months to come. Here are some things to consider right away:

Pick a date. Talk with your fiancé and family (and your fiancé’s family) about potential wedding dates to ensure the important people in both your lives will be able to take part. Select your guests. The number of guests you invite will directly inf luence the cost of your wedding. Set a budget. Budgeting for your wedding is crucial, as this will have a great impact on every other aspect of your day, as well as your honeymoon. Plan for a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses. Choose a location. Because most popular bridal spots are just that — popular —

you may want to start searching for a location quickly. Organize the bridal party. Make careful decisions about who you want supporting you leading up to the big day, and who will be displayed in front of everyone in your life. Pick a style. Many brides choose wedding styles that are ref lected in their save-the-dates, invitations, ceremonies, receptions and thank-you cards. Choosing a theme and color scheme in the beginning will help narrow down options later. Hire a caterer. Take into account the dietary needs of your guests by offering a variety of menu options, including a vegetarian dish. Order the cake. Whether you choose a large multitiered cake or cupcakes, remember to keep your budget in mind—and pick f lavors you and your fiancé truly enjoy.

Make the announcement. Decide how you want to let the community know of your planned nuptials. Do you want to take professional engagement photos? Do you plan to contact your local paper? Will you include a link to a wedding day website on your save-thedate or your wedding invitations? Get the gown. On your wedding day, everyone will be awaiting a glimpse of your gown. Listen to your instincts and choose a gown that “feels right” and ref lects your personality and style. Dress your party. Once you have chosen the wedding dress of your dreams, speak with your fiancé about his wishes for his suit, as well as the bridal party attire. Hire a photographer. Choose your professional photographer wisely. With

• Bobby pins, elastic hair bands • Hairbrush • Hairspray • Panty hose • Nail file, nail polish, remover • Baby powder • Makeup • Stain remover • Tissues • Sewing kit with scissors • Ballet flats • Pocket mirror • Extra post-earring backs • Static cling spray • Antacid • Pain reliever • Bandages • Deodorant • Dental floss • Eye drops • Bottled water • Breath mints • Duct tape — for last-minute dress fix-ups and to adhere to the bottom of slippery dress shoes

a walk down the aisle, father/daughter dance and toast, your father is sure to get photographed, but your mother might get overlooked. Make sure to ask the photographer to get shots of your mother throughout the day as well. Choose your flowers. Once you set the date, discuss with your f lorists which f lowers are in season to help narrow down your selection. You may love tulips, but if you have a winter wedding, they may be hard to come by, and may be more expensive. Planning continued on page 28 >>>

Book the entertainment. Do you want a DJ or a live band? Talk with your fiancé about your music preferences, as well as the types of tunes you want played at your reception to keep your guests on the dance f loor.

Before the Big Day Create a website for your wedding to keep guests informed of events and for easy access to registry information. Provide accommodation information for those guests traveling from out of town. Insure your engagement and wedding rings against loss, damage, theft or mysterious disappearance. According to a survey conducted by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, 44 percent of married women either don’t insure their engagement ring, or don’t know for certain whether their engagement and wedding rings are insured. license, travel documentation and insurance information are ready to go and stored in a safe place in advance of the wedding day.

Practice reciting your vows and speeches until you feel comfortable. Wear your wedding heels around the house to “break them in.” Pack a back-up pair of f lats to wear during the reception. Remember to ask for help. Designate members of your family or close friends to specific assignments.

Wedding Day Details Provide bottled water for your wedding party. To ensure no one gets over-heated, hide water near your bridal party during the ceremony for emergencies. Choose meaningful gifts for your wedding party. Necklaces, earrings or bracelets are great for bridesmaids; cuff links are perfect for groomsmen. Create individual envelopes for tipping drivers, caterers, musicians, etc. Separate envelopes will help ensure you don’t forget anyone.

Plan for weather In case of rain — Order a tent or choose a venue with indoor space for last-minute protection from the elements. Offer extra umbrellas to usher people from their vehicles to the venue. In case of heat — Place fans throughout the venue and provide plenty of water for guests. In case of cold — Space heaters can be placed throughout the space to warm up the room in advance of the event. ●

The latest trends for wedding hair and makeup Story by Amelia Compton Wolff Photography by Shaunae Teske Photography

20sinspired Bride Vintage looks exploded this past year and are a beautiful way to tie your look into your overall theme. Brides love the versatility – this 20s-inspired look is elegant enough for the red carpet, but could also work for a casual barn wedding. “The hairpiece here is key to pulling off this look,” Quinn says. “Working horizontal on the forehead says flapper meets boho, and locks in volume at the crown.” Lips are the focal point of this look. Strong lip colors are big this wedding season, and pairing them with vintage hair seals the deal to pulling off the look. A subtle cat eye compliments bombshell lips without losing focus.

Pinterest Perfect Lived-in, messy curls are trending on Pinterest and Quinn says she gets the most requests for this look. Casual updos are the perfect blend of DIY meets salon perfection. “This look can be altered by lowering the curls to the nape of the neck or softly brushing the hair to one side,” Quinn says. “Her hairpiece can also be moved, showcasing the individual style of each bride.” A classic take on bridal makeup with a slightly smoky eye won’t look out of place during a daytime ceremony. A gentle wash of gloss is the perfect way to accent the lips on a bride who doesn’t usually wear lip color.

Flower Child It’s time that the flower girl did more than throw petals. This wax flower wreath was braided into a waterfall braid that circles our flower girl’s crown. “This is a great way to jazz up a little girl with shorter hair or hair that doesn’t hold a curl as well,” Quinn says. A sprinkling of blush or glittery shadow on the cheeks paired with a shear lip gloss makes little ladies feel grown up, while still remaining age appropriate.
