Variety show will benefit students The Home Town Rome Players will host the “Rome Follies” at two fun events this year, where the hat will be passed to benefit a “Needy Student Fund” for Nekoosa Middle School students. We have changed the format for our variety show to the follies and will be combining talents of local seniors for a

song, dance variety show. Be sure to plan on attending one or both events featuring the “Romettes,” “Rome Kountry Kickers” and “Rome Singers.” The first show will be at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Lake Camelot Lodge for the Camelot Summer Frolics. The second show will be at the South Lake Cen-

The Air Force Achievement Medal recently was awarded to Airman First Class Joshua Roatch. Roatch distinguished himself by outstanding achievement as a security response member,of the 341st Missile Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. While on patrol to perform a site assessment on one of Malmstrom’s missile launch facilities, Roatch and his partner discovered a mangled vehicle that was overturned. Roatch and Sgt. Matt Meade, being the first responders, assessed the accident and established, erected and attained all necessary first aid and first response for the survival and successful recovery of Greg Herman of Hilger, Mont. “The doctors tell me that if the Air Force guys would not have come along and provided the medical attention they did, I would not be here today,” Herman said.

The second annual Adams County Stuff the Bus will be held Aug. 20. A school bus donated by the AdamsFriendship Area School District will drive to local organizations holding school supply drives, where volunteers will actually “stuff the bus” with donations. Mondays were the toughest day of the week to provide lunches. “When they came back (from the weekend) on Monday, whatever we have, they ate more,” Horner said. “We have an idea they don’t get a lot during the weekends, some of them maybe nothing. “I try to put extra carbs on the menus on Monday just to help fill them up, and maybe that’s not the right thing to do because of the obesity, but you can

tell how they eat.” Horner said it’s hard to believe how some families sustain themselves in Adams County with parents providing a living on part-time wages. “When I see the incomes that come in on free and reduced applications, and what the families are living on, I can’t imagine living on that,” Horner said. In the future, Horner expects the federal government to change what foods are served to students, but first, she hopes the state Legislature will drop the reduced assistance

Removing that category would open up free lunches for more families. “I had the hardest time collecting money from the kids on reduced lunch,” Horner said. “And I can’t turn a kid down; if a kid shows up in line and he says he’s hungry and he wants to eat, I feed him.” The main reason Horner isn’t sad to leave the district is because of who is taking her position. Vicki Marcucci, who went to school for dietetics, was tabbed as Horner’s successor. “I have a passion

The food services director for the Adams-Friendship Area School District the past two decades, Horner enjoyed her last day of school and retired this summer. Horner was responsible for making more food available to more students in the School District than in years past, thanks to the district’s breakfast and summer meals programs. But diabetes and age took their toll, so she wants to step away to accomplish more things in life. “It made me realize there’s a few other things I want to try to do. I’m going to miss my kids, and I’m going to miss my staff, but I think it’s going to be a good thing,” she said. Horner’s district has one of the state’s highest poverty rates with 68

Baby cranes arrive at Necedah Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is proud to announce the birth of four additional wild, whooping crane chicks. Whooping crane pairs began nesting early in May and after a month of sitting and tending to their nests, the staff welcomed siblings W410 and W5-10 born on June 10, W6-10 born on June 11 off of the refuge in Ju-

neau County, and W7-10 on June 13. These little ones are a welcomed addition to two other wild-born whooping cranes born the end of May. W1-10 and W3-10 have been sighted and reported to be doing well. Crane trackers and biological staff continue to monitor the chicks, from a distance. Chicks are checked four times a day. Adult whoop-

ing cranes continue to care and forage with the chicks near their nesting areas. Adults 3-04 and 9-03* with chick W1-10 can be seen from the refuge’s observation tower or classroom building with a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope. Everyone is welcome to visit Necedah National Wildlife Refuge to celebrate the birth

Rome Farmers Market a ‘community meeting place’ By Deb Cleworth Lake Country Snapshots ROME— Farmers markets, a common sight this time of year, offer a variety from local agricultural gurus. Organizers hope to feed more than stomachs during the weekly Friday Rome Farmers Market; they also want to nourish attendees’ minds. Almost every week during the third season of the summer event, guest speakers such as Jonathan Smith, president of Alpine Foods in Rome, give presentations or demonstrations or provide entertainment in the Alpine Business Park gazebo. A week ago, Smith discussed new and different cranberry products — including the new Berry Bits -- while Chris Sohns, also of Alpine Foods, prepared samples of a variety of recipes for market-goers, including chicken Berry Bits salad and smoothies.

“Our inspiration was to bring more community members into this park and to help the vendors,” said Ruthann Spiegelhoff, one of the Rome Farmers Market volunteer managers. High gasoline prices helped the farmers market its first year. “I think the first year, gas was about $4 a gallon,” said Judy McCormick, one of the market’s volunteer managers. People weren’t traveling to the roadside markets to get the fresh goods, so McCormick and Spiegelhoff asked vendors to go to the park. “And they have, and they continue to come,” McCormick said. Spiegelhoff and McCormick, both of Rome, aim to find ways to keep market offerings fresh in other ways. Last year, they scheduled a handful of gazebo presentations, and this year, almost every Friday has something for visitors, most often at

10:30 a.m. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater South Wood County, organizers expanded their offerings this summer. Scheduled events include guest chefs from local restaurants, gardening tips and health information. Rhonda Funmaker’s June appearance was the result of a recent grant from the foundation. A member of the HoChunk Bear Clan, Funmaker has a goal of preserving the traditions and cultures of the HoChunk Nation. The Friendship resident planned to bring some foods native to the area and offer cooking tips and techniques. Rain or shine, the market is held every week, and people go to enjoy the park and other residents. “One of things that Judy and I have found is it’s a community meeting place,” Spiegelhoff said.
