Badgers (11-1) vs. TCU (12-0) ■ When: Saturday, 4:10 p.m. ■ Where: Pasadena, Calif. ■ Stadium: Rose Bowl (88,500 capacity/natural grass ■ Television: ESPN (Brent Musberger, Kirk Herbstreit and Erin Andrews) ■ Radio: 1330 WHBL (Matt Lepay and Mike Lucas); ESPN Radio 950 (Bill Rosinski, David Norrie and Joe Schad) ■ Series: one tie, 14-14 in Madison on Sept. 26, 1970 ■ Line: TCU favored by 3 ■ Rankings: Wisconsin — 4th in USA Today Coaches, Associated Press and Harris Interactive; 5th in BCS; TCU — 3rd in USA Today Coaches, Associated Press, Harris Interactive and BCS
After losing 1st 3 Rose Bowls, UW won 3 under Alvarez Wisconsin’s Rose Bowl history before Barry Alvarez came to Madison wasn’t long and illustrious. There were three games — all losses — although one of them, the 1963 game against USC, was one of the most memorable Rose Bowls ever. Alvarez, of course, coached Wisconsin to three Rose Bowl wins — 1994, 1999 and 2000. Only USC, with five, has more Rose Bowl wins since 1994. Bret Bielema, who played for Iowa in the 1991 Rose Bowl, takes his first team to Pasadena this year to face TCU. Here’s a look back at Wisconsin’s Rose Bowl history:
UW bowl history Year 1953 1960 1963 1981 1982 1984 1994 1995 1996 1998 1999 2000 2000 2002 2003 2005 2006 2007 2008 2008 2009
1953 — No. 5 USC 7, No. 11 Wisconsin 0 This was the first bowl game in school history, and the Badgers came home scoreless. Alan Ameche rushed for 133 yards on 28 carries, but Wisconsin couldn’t find the end zone. Wisconsin answered USC’s touchdown drive with a 13-play, 84yard drive that ended at the USC 2 when Jerry Witt was stopped a yard Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne is one of only four players in history to win backshort of a first down on a fake field to-back Rose Bowl MVP awards. He ran for 246 yards against UCLA in the 1999 Rose goal attempt. Bowl game. AP photo
1960 — No. 8 Washington 44, No. 6 Wisconsin 8 The Badgers’ only points came on a four-yard run by fullback Tom Wiesner and a two-point conversion in the second quarter. Wisconsin entered the game allowing about 10 points a game, but was manhandled by the Huskies.
1963 — No. 1 USC 42, No. 2 Wisconsin 37 Before the Alvarez Era, this was regarded as one of the greatest games in school history, even though it was a loss for UW. Badgers quarterback Ron Vander Kelen was named the game’s MVP in spite of the loss, throwing for 401 yards and nearly engineering a comeback for the ages with a 23-point fourth quarter. Pat Richter, who later became the Wisconsin athletic director who hired Alvarez, caught 11 passes for 163 yards.
1994 — No. 9 Wisconsin 21, No. 13 UCLA 16 The Rose Bowl became Camp Randall West, as more than 70,000 Badgers fans filled the then-101,000seat stadium — and home field for the Bruins. Wisconsin’s ascension as a college football power under Alvarez was validated with the school’s first bowl win ever. Though a bruising running attack (game MVP Brent Moss rushed for 158 yards on 36 carries and two scores) keyed the win, the play many Badgers fans remember most from the game was quarterback Darrell Bevell running 21 yards down the left sideline for the game’s final TD.
1999 — No. 9 Wisconsin 38, No. 6 UCLA 31 Dubbed by one analyst as the worst Rose Bowl team ever, the Badgers lined up Ron Dayne behind an
overpowering offensive line and took down the Bruins and their high-octane offense. Dayne finished the game with 246 yards, one shy of the Rose Bowl record, and Wendell Bryant sacked Cade McNown on fourth down late to secure the win.

■ Wisconsin is making its ninth straight bowl appearance. Only 11 schools in the country, including one Big Ten team (Ohio State) boast longer active streaks. ■ Wisconsin is the only school that has played in a bowl game and the NCAA tournament every year since the 2002-03 academic year. ■ Since 1993, Wisconsin has won 10 bowl games, including six in January. That is second among schools in the country during that time span behind Boston College (11). ■ Barry Alvarez is the only coach in Big Ten history to win back-to-back Rose Bowls (1999 and 2000). ■ Since 1994, only USC, with five wins, has more Rose Bowl victories than Wisconsin’s three. ■ Ron Dayne won the Rose Bowl MVP in 1999 and 2000, one of only four players in history to be so honored. ■ Tight ends coach Joe Rudolph was the starting left guard on the Wisconsin 1994 Rose Bowl team that beat UCLA.
Playing the role of Rose Bowl favorites for the first time under Alvarez, the Badgers overcame a 9-3 halftime deficit to become the first Big Ten school to win the Rose Bowl in back-to-back seasons. Dayne won the game’s MVP award for the second straight season, rushing for 200 yards on 34 carries in his final game for Wisconsin. Dayne’s twoyear totals in the Rose Bowl were 446 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Defensively, the Badgers held Stanford to minus-five yards rushing.

Badgers’ 2010 season in review Game 1
who was in the hospital recovering from a setback to a heart attack, out-Badgered the Badgers. Sparty controlled the line of scrimmage, converted half of its third-down conversions and pounded the ball down the Badgers’ throats in the fourth quarter, when this game was ultimately decided. The loss had fans questioning the Badgers’ approach to the non-conference season, wondering if their Char min-soft schedule had them ready for the rigors of the Big Ten season.
Sept. 4 at Las Vegas Wisconsin 41, UNLV 21 The last time the Badgers came to Las Vegas for a game, they were lucky to escape with a win. This year’s group didn’t want this group of Rebels to find a cause for sticking a fork in the Badgers’ season in Week 1. After a mistake-filled first half that saw Wisconsin dominate the stat sheets but only take a 17-14 halftime lead, the Badgers pulled away in the second half, with 24 third-quarter points to pull away. John Clay, Montee Ball and true freshman James White combined for 261 yards and four scores, as the Badgers passed their first road test against an inferior, but determined opponent.
Game 6
Oct. 9 at Camp Randall Wisconsin 41, Minnesota 23 Nothing helps get a Badgers football team on track than the site of the Gophers on the opposing sideline, with Paul Bunyan’s Axe on the line. After the Gophers’ inspired first half, the Badgers grounded down their long-time rival in the second half and won the border battle for the seventh straight year. Clay and White rushed for 229 yards and scored five touchdowns in the win. After the last score, which gave the Badgers a 41-16 lead with 6:39 left, Bret Bielema went for two. The move didn’t please Gophers coach Tim Brewster, who voiced his displeasure after the game during the post-game handshake and press conference. Brewster lost his job a few weeks later, so he had many more concer ns than a failed two-point conversion in Madison.
Game 2
Sept. 11 at Camp Randall Wisconsin 27, San Jose St. 14 In their home opener, the Badgers offered no signs that a special season was on the horizon. The Spartans were a week removed from a 48-3 whipping at the hands of reigning national champion Alabama, and Wisconsin’s bruising running game looked like a tough matchup for an undersized team. The Badgers dominated the stats, compiling 403 yards and limiting San Jose to 55 yards rushing, but played sloppily. Scott Tolzien threw an interception, and the Badgers had four fumbles, fortunately recovering all but one, and missed three scoring chances in the red zone. The game was never in doubt, as the Badgers led 27-7 in the fourth quarter, but it was a disappointing showing at Camp Randall.
Wisconsin backup cornerback Shelton Johnson gave up a touchdown catch to Minnesota wide receiver Da’Jon McKnight in this Badgers’ victory, but earlier in the season, Johnson made one of the plays of the season when he shoved an Arizona State kick returner out of bounds inches before the the player scored with no time left in the first half in Madison. AP photo time ran out in the first half of this Big Ten-Pac 10 non-conference battle. Instead of a soulcrushing TD going into the locker room, the Sun Devils walked away with nothing. You have heard of Jay Valai, the Badgers’ hard-hitting senior strong safety. He’s made plenty of huge plays during his three years as starter, but perhaps none bigger than his block of a potential game-tying PAT late in the fourth quarter, preserving the Badgers’ one-point lead and eventual victory against a twotouchdown underdog.
Game 3
Sept. 18 at Camp Randall Wisconsin 20, Arizona St. 19 You’ve probably never heard of Shelton Johnson, a sophomore from Texas, but he made one of the biggest plays of the season for the Badgers when he pushed Sun Devils kick returner Kyle Middlebrooks out of bounds at the 1-yard line as

TCU standout Dalton cherishes stellar career, Rose Bowl berth BY RAY GLIER
Gannett News Service
There must be some contradictory emotions going on with Andy Dalton this month. He is the quarterback at TCU, which just completed an unbeaten season, yet the Horned Frogs have no chance to play for the BCS national championship. He must feel robbed, right? Ticked off ? He has to be. It doesn’t sound like it. The Horned Frogs (12-0) are preparing for Wisconsin (11-1) Saturday in the Rose Bowl, but Dalton does not have an appetite for beating up the BCS. He wants to play a game, not get even. Earlier this month, two days before unbeatens Auburn and Oregon were going to play their last games for the right to advance to the BCS national championship game, Dalton said he was going to have fun watching the Tigers and Ducks. It didn’t sound then as if he wanted to start an argument. “Regardless of what happens,” Dalton said, “we’re going to a BCS game. It’s been a great season.” And it’s a great time to be Dalton, 23. He recently organized a non-denominational worship service on campus called “Ignite.” He followed that up with a bible study group. He also helped with a coat drive and tee-shirt drive for the homeless in the Fort Worth area. He got engaged Oct. 6 and wrapped up his degree in marketing with graduation ceremonies Dec. 18. There does not seem to be any room — or time — for angst over the BCS. He’s competitive, but
TCU quarterback Andy Dalton will close out a glorious career against Wiscsonin. AP photo there is a sense he is not going to carry a grudge. Consider Dalton and center Jake Kirkpatrick walking off the field after beating New Mexico to finish the regular season 12-0. It is completely transparent. They have wide smiles; Kilpatrick is carrying a rose, and they are not waving an index finger calling themselves No. 1. It has been a fulfilling career for Dalton, no matter how it ends. He holds school records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions, attempts, and passing percentage. Not bad for a quarterback who had two offers (UTEP and Memphis) going into his senior
season in high school. Dalton has won 41 games at TCU as the starting quarterback, which eclipsed the record of TCU legend Sammy Baugh (29, 1934-36). And he is a two-time MWC offensive player of the year. This season, Dalton had a milestone win at Utah, which added to the fulfillment. He threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns in a 47-7 rout where his early shots downfield ripped the top off of the Utes’ defense and made it a rout. His makeup is the logical reason why Dalton thrived during his four years as a starter. “He’s solid, he won’t make a lot of mistakes,” said Gil
Brandt, an NFL draft analyst and former Cowboys executive. But there are more than intangibles to admire. Dalton cannot knock down brick walls with his throws, but he has an NFL-capable arm, Brandt said. His accuracy has improved every season, and he can run a 4.5 40-yard dash. Dalton is listed at 6-3, but is actually just under 6.2, Brandt said. Height has not been an issue for Drew Brees and Michael Vick, who are below the NFL’s imagined height criteria. Is he going to be Brees? Dalton has a chance in the NFL, Brandt said, because for four years he did not
lead a program that spit out 2-9 teams. He led a program team that was 438. “He is a real smart guy,” Brandt said. “He’s a lot like the Denver quarterback, Kyle Orton. He’s athletic. What he has done every year is improve his accuracy. He is a guy that has been productive. I think he can be a third round pick and go from there.” Dalton said there was plenty of motivation for TCU this season after what happened in the Fiesta Bowl last January against Boise State. His reputation, in particular, needs some mending. Dalton flipped three interceptions. TCU, which was unbeaten, lost to the Broncos, 17-10. “It didn’t tear us down,” Dalton said. “It gave us motivation to get there again this year and we did.” Dalton has to play well because Wisconsin has been bludgeoning opponents and not apologizing for it. The Badgers won their last three games by an average of 43 points. No matter what happens in the Rose Bowl, Dalton and his teammates’ legacy is secure. They were consistent enough over four years to get an invitation to join the Big East so they will not have to beg for respect any longer as a member of a conference without an automatic bid to the BCS bowls. “There is a definitely a sense of accomplishment of what this whole senior class has been able to do to see the change that has happened on campus and in Fort Worth,” Dalton said. “There is a change in the national perception of TCU. It’s been a lot of fun, too.”

Game-by-game/Badgers finished strong
But the Badgers’ signature moment came midway through the fourth quarter. After the Buckeyes closed to 21-18, the Badgers embarked on a 10-play, 73yard drive that culminated with a TD run by White with 4:36 left. The landmark victory reasserted the Badgers as Big Ten title contenders, and triggered a celebration at Camp Randall that canceled the traditional Fifth Quarter as fans celebrated on the field.
tional analysts criticized Bielema for running up the score on the Hoosiers to impress pollsters, even though Indiana coach Bill Lynch disagreed with them. The Badgers scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter — on a busted pass play, an interception return and a scramble by the fifth string quarterback — to complete the rout.
Game 8
Nov. 20 at Ann Arbor, Mich. Wisconsin 48, Michigan 28 No matter what direction these two programs are going — and there’s little doubt the Badgers have passed the Wolverines on the Big Ten food chain these days — Wisconsin winning in Ann Arbor is a big thing. This was Wisconsin’s first victory in the Big House since 1994. Behind dangerous quarterback Denard Robinson, the Wolverines closed to 24-14 and looked poised to repeat Wisconsin’s 2008 trip to Ann Arbor, when the Badgers led 19-0 at halftime before losing 27-25. But instead of folding, the Badgers went to the ground. They threw one pass in the second half — and finished with 29 straight running plays, to keep Robinson off the field, and the Badgers’ punishing ground game on it. They finished with 357 rushing yards — White had 181 on 23 carries and Ball with 173 on 29 as Clay remained injured on the sidelines.
Oct. 23 at Iowa City, Iowa Wisconsin 31, Iowa 30 Bret Bielema wears a Hawkeye tattoo from his days as a walk-on lineman at Iowa who became a captain and starter. On this day, Bielema showed the fans of his alma mater he has a daring side. With his team facing a 30-24 deficit in the fourth quarter, Bielema called for a fake punt on fourth-and-4 from the 26yard line. Brad Nortman ran 17 yards to keep a drive alive. The stunning play set up the game-winning score, an eight-yard run by Ball. While the victory over Ohio State may have been more thorough, the Badgers’ win over the Hawkeyes may have been their most impressive of the season. Everyone wondered if the Badgers had enough left in the emotional tank to win on the road against a fierce rival.
Game 9
Nov. 6 at West Lafayette, Ind. Wisconsin 34, Purdue 13 With a bye week to recover from two emotional wins, the Badgers hit the road for a game they were expected to dominate, but trailed 10-6 at halftime. Were the Badgers, who so often stumbled in a spot like this in past years, doomed to another disappointing loss to an inferior opponent? The concern was unnecessary, as Wisconsin dominated the second half behind the running of Ball, who was filling in for Clay, who was injured during the game, and White, who was also out, and a defense that produced four turnovers.
Game 11
Game 12
Nov. 27 at Camp Randall Wisconsin 70, N’western 23 The Badgers secured a share of the Big Ten title for the first time since 1999 with another impressive victory, this time a dismantling of the Wildcats. It was the third time Wisconsin scored at least 70 points in game this season, and Ball became just the second player in school history to score four touchdowns in consecutive games. UW scored on seven straight possessions to build a 49-17 halftime lead, taking its pedal off the gas after three quarters, when it hit 70 points. Defensive end J.J. Watt shined defensively, Game 10 with three quarterback hurries, three Nov. 13 at Camp Randall tackles for loss, a pair of forced fumbles Wisconsin 83, Indiana 20 Bo Ryan’s basketball team rarely and a blocked extra-point attempt. The win secured a share of the Big scores 80 points in a game. So when the Badgers football team does it, heads Ten championship with Ohio State and most certainly will turn. The Badgers Michigan State. Since the three teams scored nine offensive touchdowns and were tied at the top, the Badgers needed saw Ball and White combine for 311 to be ranked ahead of the Spartans and yards and five touchdowns in scoring Buckeyes in the BCS standings to earn the most points by a UW team since the trip to the Rose Bowl. The announcement became official 1915 and matched the most by a team in on Sunday, Dec. 5, that the Badgers a Big Ten Conference game. ROSE BOWL NOTES Scoreboard busters
Wisconsin and TCU are two high-scoring outfits indeed. The Badgers scored more than 80 once, 70 once and at least 40 six times. TCU scored 60 or more twice and 40 or more eight times. Each team has scored 520 points.
Run, run, run
Wisconsin almost had three 1,000-yard rushers this season. Freshman James White led the way with 1,029; John Clay had 936 (he missed two games with injury) and Montee Ball had 864.
Quarterback excellence
Fans of solid quarterback play should enjoy this game. Wisconsin’s Scott Tolzien ranks fourth in the nation in quarterback rating (169.8) and TCU’s Andy Dalton ranks fifth (167.0). Combined, they have thrown for 4,938 yards and 42 touchdowns with just 12 picks (six each).
Bowl regulars
All-America selection.
TCU, which has back-toback undefeated regular seasons and is 38-3 in its last 41 games, is playing in its 12th bowl in 13 years (and first Rose Bowl). Wisconsin is in its ninth straight bowl game.
Dalton’s farewell
Four-year star ter Dalton wraps up his sensational career as quarterback at TCU. Dalton, who finished ninth in the Heisman balloting this year, has 41 career victories, the most among all active college players. He has thrown for 10,095 yards and 70 touchdowns at TCU and has thrown a touchdown pass in 20 straight games. He also has 1,583 career rushing yards with 21 rushing touchdowns.
All-Americans
Both the Badgers and the Horned Frogs are well-represented on the Associated Press All-America teams. Wisconsin has two firstteam offensive linemen, senior tackle Gabe Carimi and senior guard John Moffitt. TCU senior safety Tejay Johnson was a first-team pick on defense. On the second team, Wisconsin senior tight end Lance Kendricks and junior defensive end J.J. Watt were honored, as were TCU senior center Jake Kirkpatrick and junior linebacker Tank Cardner. Wisconsin junior running back Clay was a third-team
Balanced attacks
Both Wisconsin and TCU feature nice balance on offense. Wisconsin has a 1,000yard rusher (White) and a 2,000-yard passer (Tolzien, with 2,300), as does TCU with feature back Ed Wesley (1,065 rushing yards) and Dalton (2,638 passing yards.
