The site is located at Atlanta, near Georgia Tech campus. It is at the southwest of Means Street NW and Northeast of Brain Train Rail. The site now today is a public parking lot serves for Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and other companies around it. The Bankhead Bridge is at one corner of the site, today abandoned with approach spans at one end removed, remains an skewed truss bridge.

CONCEPT
A CAVE-SAHPED WAITING ROOM THAT CREATES A SENSATION OF THE CHANGING OF TIME
The Benagil Sea Cave, Portugal In ancient times, people lived in caves, and what they did everyday was waiting, waiting for a good weather, waitting for sunrises and sunsets. The concept is to create a cave-shaped waiting room where people can have a deeper experience of waiting by the changing of time.

When people are in the cave, they can see the sky and the bridge partly hidden by a tall tree, which increases the depth of the view. They can also see the refIection of the sky from the pool. Water fades away at the edge and fIows into the fIoor, but people moving on the platform will not be seen due to the 8 ft height level. When people are on the bridge, before they walk down the ramp, they cannot see the huge window of the cave directly, because it is also partly hidden by the tall tree. What they can see are peole waiting, moving and trains coming, going. 10

SUN PATH DIAGRAM OF ATLANTA
The building is precisely oriented in order to get a single sunbeam that marked the daily arrival of midday through the oculus, which provides the only top light in the building. On summer solstice, Jun 22nd, which is a special day of the Cave. Sun rise will illuminate the narrow doorway and sunlight will come through the hole on the ground fIoor then light up the pool underground at 12pm.

CONTRADICITONS - Hemispheric volumes in a regular boxed shape. - Circular outdoor ramp implies indoor circular spaces. - Rough texture on exterior walls versus smooth texture on interior walls. - A natural element (cave) built with an artificial material (concrete). - A hidden underground space that is a refIection of the waiting room. - A directly entrance with a narrow door.

PROJECT 2
IMMERSIVE FOREST COMMUNITY CENTER DESIGN Individual Work
SITE SITUATION The project is within the historic South Downtown area of Atlanta, part of the Newport US RE redevelopment project. The overal site encompasses upwards of 18 blocks of the city of Atlanta. While there are 40+ buildings and/or sites under redevepopment, this project only considers one site which is located on 0 Mitchell Street.
STATEMENT The design is a medium-scale public-oriented building, an urban community center, in an urban setting with varied programs and functions. Safety, attractiveness, and cohesion are three important issues for this project. To guarantee safety, lights will be turned on at night and brighten the streets like a beacon. Colorful decoration on the exterior walls will create positive atmosphere and activate the building. In order to attract more people, the ground fIoor will be used as a public theater and open day and night. 15

THE IMMERSIVE WALKING EXPERIENCE The six existing trees in front of the building are preserved. The whole structure is supported by a large amount of tree-shaped slim columns (pilotis), where, together with the existing trees, people can get an immersive walking experience and cannot be able to figure out which is a real tree and which is a column.

PROGRAMS AND AREAS The building is a community center with different types of DIY workshops, such as painting, photographing, baking... It is a good opportunity for different people to learn new skills and work with others. Each class room is organized in a separated box and is connected to others slightly, which is like fIoating in the sky. There is also a ground fIoor cafe, a roof bar, and a underground cinema. People on street will be interested in seeing other people sitting and walking inside of the building, and will also like to join in the active “performance.

PROJECT 3
THE BUILDING OF TIMBER MIXED USED MARKET AND HOTEL DESIGN Individual Work
SITE ANALYSIS The site is located at the convergence of South Boston, Fort Point, and the South End areas of Boston, Massachusetts. The building lot lies between West 4th and Traveler Streets along the rail sidings that line the Bass River.
CONCEPT
25
THE QUESTION IS HOW TO COMBINE THOSE TWO INDEPENDENT PROGRAMS BY STRUCTURE AND SPACE? WHICH ONE IS BETTER: SHOWING CONTRAST OR KEEPING CONTINUOUS?
WHAT IS THE BUILDING ABOUT? 1. The building is about showing a simplicity behind a complexity. 2. The building is about combining two independent programs by both showing the contrast and keeping them continuous. 3. The building is about defining different spaces by a single element. 26
GROUND LEVEL PLAN SHOWING THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING The building is a mix-used building with two different programs. One is a farmer’s market opened to public that attracts people from nearby neighborhoods. The other is a short-term stay hotel with different types of private rooms. Different people can find their rooms depending on their personalities and social demands.

UPPER FLOOR PLANS SHOWING THE CIRCULATION AND STRUCTURES
There is another program at the middle part of the building that brings both senses of community and privacy. It is a connection of downstairs mark which has a few rooms, hotel facilities and shops.
The three feet deep interlaced beams serve as a fIoor at the main entrance on Foundry Street, and as a roof at the entrance on Fourth Street and two buildings on Foundry Street. There is also a middle level between the first fIoor and second fIoor, where people can walk on the top surface of and look at the market dotwnwards. At north side of the building the beams turn into a wavy landscape, and at the end of the site they fade away

The building structures are made of two parts. The main building is made of a CLT frame. The structure has a ten feet module grid and a shear wall core at the center. Downstairs there is a curved surface made of three feet deep interlaced glulam beams, and supported by timber columns. The faรงade of the building shares the same grid of the cured surface, where it is a six feet wide balcony of the hotel rooms. 32
