Message From the President In order to avoid episodes of grouchiness, I try to avoid discussing current events and politics in these columns. Last time I was able to do that by talking about the effect of the eclipse on the cattle at my farm.

Unfortunately I cannot find anything to discuss of a similar nature which will take my mind off the current silliness in Washington. So I will just move on to our coming meeting of GAP. I have discussed productivity in prior columns. I am encouraged to note all of our committees are meeting this year. One new one that I am particularly interested in supporting is the committee on Military/Veterans matters. This should be an important committee and I plan to meet with them briefly at the beginning in order to stress the importance of this committee to GAP. Jack Drescher will also be helping them. We have had some good productivity recently from existing committees.

For example I just read a paper by the Culture Committee addressing the issuing on how to help children and families caught up in the immigration policy. There is a lot of information out there about policy and politics but nothing about how actually to help these people in their time of crisis. Also regarding productivity, we just learned the LGBT Committee has received an award from the Federation of State’s Medical Boards about committee’s “The Growing Regulation of Conversion Therapy” which was published in the Journal of Medical Regulation in 2016. This paper will receive the 2017 Award for Excellence in Editorial Writing and two of the members of the committee will be reimbursed for their travel to the meeting FSMB in Charlotte.Congratulations gang!

At this meeting the second Dear Abby award will be given. The recipient is Caitlyn Ryan, PhD. Dear Abby (Jeanne Phillips) will attend. Spring is lovely in Westchester County and we will enjoy it at this next meeting. I look forward to the good comradery and friendship renewals that we will all experience.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The 2018 Dear Abby Award will be presented by Dear Abby on Friday, April 13 at 5 p.m. to Caitlin Ryan, PhD, ACSW. Doctor Ryan is the founding Director of the Family Acceptance Project of the San Francisco State University which began in 2002. She has made a difference in thousands of families over the 40 years she has been at her work at the Family Acceptance Project. These families have an LGBT family member who struggle because of religious objections to homosexuality. She has conducted research interviews with hundreds of LGBT youth and their families to determine what behaviors lead to perceived rejection and negative mental health outcomes (suicide, substance abuse, depression, homelessness, etc.) and what behaviors lead to perceived acceptance and positive mental health outcomes. She developed the first Best Practice Resource for suicide prevention for LGBT youth of the Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention.

Doctor Ryan has developed a number of resources to assist these youth and their families. She has developed an approach to helping religious families develop strategies to increase acceptance and decrease rejection of their LGBT children, without challenging the tenets of their religious beliefs.

Report from the Nominating Committee: We will have an election at the Spring Meeting for two new Board of Directors positions. The nominees are: Curtis Adams, MD, Dan Becker, MD, Sheila Hafter-Gray, MD, and Sy Saeed, MD Curtis Adams, MD Dr. Curtis Adams was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Mc Donogh School for 12 years. He completed his undergraduate and medical studies at Howard University in Washington, DC. He went on to train in general adult psychiatry at Hahenemann University in Philadelphia, PA. Upon completion of his psychiatric residency, he was appointed the unit director of the Psychiatric Medical Care Unit at Hahnemann University Hospital.

He then worked on a general inpatient unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dallas Texas. He gained valuable experience in community psychiatry while working for Mental Health Connections in Dallas, TX. In 1998, Dr. Adams joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Maryland Baltimore and began working in outpatient in the Division of Community Psychiatry. He is the Senior Psychiatrist at the Carruthers Clinic, a community mental health center, and is an attending psychiatrist on The Division’s Programs of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) team. He also provides bi-weekly consultation and training to Harbor City Unlimited, a psychosocial rehabilitation program run by the University of Maryland Baltimore.

Dr. Adams has participated in numerous workshops at the American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting and at the APA’s Institute on Psychiatric Services.

Dr. Adams was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Mc Donogh School from 2003 to 2011. He was a member of the Board of the Children's Scholarship Fund of Baltimore from 2005 to 2007. From 2007 to the present, Dr. Adams, has been of member of the Committee on Admissions of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He was the Area 3 Representative to the Board of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists (AACP) from 2008-2016. Since 2016, he has been the AACP’s current vice-president. He is also a member of the Psychiatry and Community Committee of GAP.

Daniel F. Becker, MD Dr. Becker specializes in adolescent psychiatry and addiction psychiatry and has been with at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center for over twenty years, where he is medical director and administrator for behavioral health services. Prior to joining MPMC, he was director of adolescent services at the Yale Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Becker received his bachelor’s degree in Humanities from Stanford University in 1977, and his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1982. He completed his residency training at Yale in 1986. He remains active in teaching and research, and is a clinical professor of psychiatry at UCSF and an adjunct clinical professor of psychiatry at Stanford. Dr. Becker’s primary research interests are in the areas of adolescent psychopathology, personality pathology, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. He is a life member of the American Psychiatric Association and a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Becker joined GAP in 2000, as a member of the Committee on Adolescence, and been chair of that committee since 2011.

Sheila Hafter Gray, MD Dr. Sheila Hafter Gray joined GAP in 2011 and is currently chair of the Committee on Professionalism and Ethics. She identifies herself as a psychiatrist-psychoanalyst who works to integrate seemingly divergent viewpoints and interests into cohesive unities.

She was a member of the Committee on Peer Review of the American Psychiatric Association, later the Committee on Quality Assurance and Improvement which she eventually chaired.

For many years she was a liaison member of the Steering Committee on Practice Guidelines.

More recently she was president of the APA Lifers (now Senior Psychiatrists) and a recipient of its Berson Award for her leadership of its Program Committee.

Highlights of her contributions to psychoanalysis include service as author of several practice guidelines and parliamentarian of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and as president of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. She represented the Academy in the working group of the four major psychoanalytic membership organizations in the USA that wrote the Standards of Psychoanalytic Education, a foundational document for the effort to recognize psychoanalysis as a subspecialty of several core mental health professions, to include psychiatry.

A graduate of Harvard Medical School and its Postgraduate Psychiatry Program, she was Professor of Psychiatry in the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Teaching Analyst in the Baltimore-Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis, and Psychiatry Consultant in the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, while maintaining a full time private practice. She continues as Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry in the Uniform Services University of the Health Sciences, where she teaches in the Ethics and Fundamentals of Medicine sequences; and she is a member of the faculty of Saint Elizabeths Hospital Psychiatry Residency Training Program where she teaches seminars in Brief Dynamic Psychotherapy and Advanced Dynamic Psychiatry. She is also president of the Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education.

Sy Atezaz Saeed, MD, MS, FACPsych Dr. Saeed has been a member of GAP since 2012 and the Chair of the Committee on Administration and Leadership since 2014. The committee has produced over ten 1-12 scientific products in the three years since he has been the chair of the committee.

Current Positions: 1. Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, since 2004.

2. Executive Director, Behavioral Health Service Line for Vidant Health, a non-profit hospital system made up of eight hospitals, physician practices, home health, hospice, wellness centers and other health care services serving 1.4 million people in 29 counties in Eastern North Carolina.

3. Director, Center for Telepsychiatry, East Carolina University 4. Director of North Carolina Statewide Telepsychiatry Program (NC-STeP), a state funded program covering over 70 hospitals in North Carolina.

A 1982 medical graduate of Dow Medical College, Dr. Saeed completed his residency training in psychiatry at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute, Chicago. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also certified in Psychiatric Administration and Management by the American Psychiatric Association and holds a MS degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy.

Prior to his appointment at East Carolina University, Dr. Saeed served as Professor and Chairman, Department of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (1995-2004) where he was also the Clinical Director for the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Service NetWork of North Central Illinois, a state-operated Network serving people with serious and persistent mental illness in 23 counties and covering 1.5 million lives in north central Illinois.

Dr. Saeed was the founding Editor of the American Association of Psychiatric Administrator's Journal, Psychiatrist Administrator (2000-2010). He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Psychiatric Administration and Management (JPAM). He serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals. He is a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Health, London. He also serves on the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), a think-tank for psychiatry dedicated to shaping psychiatric thinking, public programs, and clinical practice in mental health. In 2014 Governor McCrory appointed him to the Governing Board of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine. In 2016 he was reappointed to the board for a 4-year term by the governor.

Dr. Saeed has published extensively in the areas of evidence-based practices; anxiety and mood disorders; telepsychiatry; psychiatric administration and leadership; and psychiatric treatment integration. His current scholarly and research interest areas include: the study of the process and impact of implementing evidence-based practices in mental health settings; telepsychiatry; and psychiatric administration and leadership. He has been involved in funded research both as a principal investigator and co-investigator. He has lectured and presented nationwide and internationally, including being an invited speaker at a White House Convening in 2016.
