Dear Readers,

LETTER from the

Publisher

I can hardly believe that we are approaching the end of the 2nd quarter of 2024. Time has truly flown by at an amazing pace. But this has inspired me to reflect on so much about the year so far.

With all the bad things happening around the world — floods, fires, earthquakes, storms, famine, the death of loved ones, war and disease — I have decided to shift my focus on the good things going on in my life and the world. Immediately two amazing and relevant songs come to mind: Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and the mega hit song, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. In the chorus McFerrin sings, “In every life we have some trouble / But when you worry you make it double / Don’t worry, be happy.”

The lyrics of both songs are truly inspirational. In today’s world, where stress and anxiety are prevalent, these songs remind us to take a step back and appreciate the small joys in life, focusing on gratitude and happiness instead of dwelling on the negative.

For me, it’s making a personal choice to “be happy.” I invite you to take a step back and find gratitude and happiness in the little things this summer and join me in a conscious decision to “be happy.”

Here are a few simple ideas:

• Take a day trip with a friend

• Spend a day at the Lake

• Read a good book

• Make a meal with your family

• Work on your lawn or garden

• Go to the theater.

• Call your friends and catch up

• Visit with a neighbor or an elderly friend

• Celebrate your good health

Please join me and make a personal decision to be happy and your energy and light will spread and light up everyone you touch. Spread joy and positivity to those around you. Take time to renew and restore your mind and spirit!!

In the spirit of the greatness in us all,

Dear Readers,

The Women of Color Foundation is pleased to announce its partnership with St. John Knits. On the following page, learn more about how you can participate in special opportunities, discounted merchandise, shopping events, and more.

Along those same lines, with the rise of folks working from home in pajamas, it should still be a priority to look your best in the workplace. In “Dressing for Success” starting on page 8, St. John shares a number of things to consider when choosing professional attire.

With technology starting to run our lives, do you take time out to disconnect? In “Benefits of a Digital Detox” we talk about how you can benefit mentally and physically just by taking a break. Check it out on page 10.

Something I have been striving to do – so far with scant success! – is to create a minimalist environment. Personally, I am much more at peace when my environment is clutter-free, though my spaces don’t reflect that. With an article about how to achieve this lofty goal, We share some tips starting on page 12.

Another trend that is gaining more traction is homemade skin and haircare techniques. As someone who really hates chemicals, I love that there are rather simple ways to care for my hair and skin (page 16).

Danielle Price and Danyell Goggins explain the nature of grief and how it can take a phyiscal toll on our bodies. See “Good Grief” starting on page 20.

We wouldn’t be Career & Lifestyle without talking about some great books you should check out including “I Am Worthy” and several others (pages 18 and 41-45).

As someone who loves to travel, I’m always looking for something different to do. Instead of hitting the usual hotspots, we offer a few less touristy alternatives. Check out “Underrated Travel Destinations” on page 23.

SCORE Cleveland shares with us on pages 30-31 why Black women should consider volunteering with the organization. It provides an opportunity for us to continue to lift others while we climb. And while we’re thinking of others, check out the mission of NB2FS and how to give care to the caregiver on pages 33 and 38.

Finally, on our cover is a photo from Cleveland Juneteenth Freedomfest sponsored by MetroHealth. The annual event was a success again this year with its rich cultural flavor and flair! Our Creative Director, Barbara Somrack, captured the essence of Juneteenth for me with our moving cover photo.

Dressing for Success:

8 Things to Consider when Choosing Your Professional Attire

The clothes we wear impact not only how we feel, but also how we’re perceived by others. This is especially true in a professional setting, where your attire can influence your credibility, authority, and even your chances of getting a promotion. While some workplaces have relaxed dress codes, it’s always best to project a polished and professional image. Here are eight key factors to consider when choosing your work wardrobe:

Company Culture:

Every company has a unique culture, which is reflected in how employees dress. Take note of the general dress code during your interview process, or observe colleagues discreetly. Is it business formal, business casual, or something more relaxed? When in doubt, err on the side of caution and dress slightly more formal until you get a better sense of the workplace norms.

Industry Standards:

Certain industries have established dress codes. For example, lawyers and bankers typically wear suits, while tech companies might be more relaxed with jeans and polos being acceptable. Research typical attire within your field to ensure you’re aligned with expectations.

Client Interaction:

If you regularly meet with clients, your attire should reflect professionalism and inspire confidence. Dress a step or two more formally than you would on a typical workday. This shows respect for your clients and makes a positive first impression.

Your Role:

The higher your position in the company, the more professional your attire should be. Leaders are often expected to set the tone for the dress code, so opt for classic and polished pieces.

Comfort & Confidence

Looking professional goes hand-in-hand with feeling comfortable and confident. Choose clothes that fit well and flatter your body type. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your posture and overall demeanor.

Presentation Matters:

Beyond clothing, consider the finer details. Keep your clothes clean and wrinkle-free. Shoes should be polished and appropriate for the environment. Maintain a well-groomed appearance with neat hair and minimal jewelry.

Dress for the Occasion:

Even within a casual work environment, there may be times when a more formal outfit is necessary. For presentations, meetings, or conferences, step up your attire to project authority.

Your Signature

Style:

While professionalism is key, don’t be afraid to inject some personality into your wardrobe! Choose pieces that reflect your individual style and make you feel empowered. A signature element, like a statement scarf or well-tailored blazer, can elevate your look

By considering these aspects, youc an develop a professional wardrobe that makes a positive impact in your work environment. Remember, dressing for success is an investment in your career and can open doors to new opportunities. 5 6 7 8

Benefits of a Digital Detox: Unplugging for a Healthier Life

In today’s hyper-connected world, it seems impossible to go a day without checking our phones, responding to emails, or scrolling through social media. While technology has brought many conveniences and advancements, it has also introduced a constant barrage of notifications and information that can lead to stress and burnout. A digital detox, the intentional act of unplugging from digital devices, can offer numerous benefits for mental and physical health. Here’s why you should consider it and how to effectively do it.

Benefits of a Digital Detox

1 Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Constant notifications and the pressure to stay connected can lead to increased stress and anxiety. A digital detox allows your mind to rest and recharge, reducing overall stress levels.

2 Improved Sleep: Exposure to the blue light emitted by screens can interfere with your sleep patterns by suppressing the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Unplugging from devices, especially before bedtime, can lead to better sleep quality and duration.

3 Enhanced Focus and Productivity: Digital distractions can significantly impact your ability to concentrate and be productive. By taking a break from your devices, you can improve your focus and accomplish tasks more efficiently.

4 Better Mental Health: Social media, in particular, can negatively affect mental health by fostering feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and depression. A digital detox can help you reconnect with the present moment and reduce these negative emotions.

5 Increased Physical Activity: Time spent on screens often replaces time that could be spent on physical activities. Unplugging encourages you to move more, whether it’s going for a walk, exercising, or engaging in other physical activities.

6 Improved Relationships: Constant device usage can strain personal relationships. By unplugging, you can spend more quality time with family and friends, fostering deeper and more meaningful connections.

How to Do a Digital Detox

1 Set Clear Goals: Determine why you want to do a digital detox and what you hope to achieve. This will help you stay motivated and committed.

2 Start Small: If the idea of completely unplugging is daunting, start with small steps. Designate specific times of the day to be device-free, such as during meals or before bedtime.

3 Create Device-Free Zones: Establish areas in your home where devices are not allowed, such as the bedroom or dining room. This can help you create a more mindful and present environment.

4 Use Digital Detox Apps: Ironically, there are apps designed to help you reduce screen time. These apps can track your usage and set limits on the time spent on certain activities or apps.

5 Engage in Offline Activities: Find hobbies and activities that don’t involve screens. Reading a book, gardening, playing a sport, or spending time outdoors are great ways to disconnect from technology.

6 Inform Others: Let your friends, family, and colleagues know that you are doing a digital detox. This way, they will understand if you are slower to respond and can support your efforts.

7 Reflect and Adjust: After your digital detox, take time to reflect on the experience. Notice any changes in your mood, productivity, or overall wellbeing. Adjust your technology use accordingly to maintain a healthier balance.

A digital detox can significantly improve your mental and physical health, enhance your relationships, and boost your overall quality of life. By setting clear goals, starting small, and engaging in offline activities, you can successfully unplug and reap the benefits of a more balanced and mindful approach to technology. Give it a try and see how unplugging can lead to a healthier, happier you.

Live More Simply:

Creating a Minimalist Home

Creating a minimalist home involves more than just decluttering and reducing possessions. It’s about fostering an environment that promotes simplicity, functionality, and tranquility. Minimalism is a lifestyle choice that emphasizes living with less to focus on what truly matters. In home design, this translates to creating spaces that are clean, functional, and free from unnecessary items.

Steps to Create a Minimalist Home Declutter Space

• Assess Every Item: Go through each room and evaluate every item. Keep only what you need, use regularly, or love.

• Donate or Sell Unwanted Items: Items that are in good condition but no longer serve you can be donated or sold.

• Discard the Rest: Recycle or dispose of items that are broken or unusable.

Simplify Furniture

• Choose Multi-Functional Pieces: Opt for furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed or a coffee table with storage.

• Quality Over Quantity: Invest in a few highquality pieces rather than filling your space with numerous items.

• Clean Lines and Neutral Colors: Select furniture with simple designs and neutral tones to maintain a calm and cohesive look.

Steps to declutter your home

• Start Room by Room. Attempting to declutter an entire house, especially if you’ve been living there for years, can be a discouraging and overwhelming task. Start in a room that has the least amount of clutter and work through it. Create realistic and achievable goals!

• Discard Items that Have No Value. Throw away random items that have little to no value. Why keep it? If you have something that is physical (handwritten letter, notes, etc.) scan them and send to an email. With a world that is mostly digital, it only seems like the right answer.

• Everything Should Have a Place. Every item needs to have a designated spot or area it should be in! If you can’t find a placement for it, pitch it!

• Make a To Do List. When there is a lot of clutter everywhere it can be hard to figure out where to start, making a checklist can help organize our thoughts and can help establish a sense of achievement when items are crossed off on it.

• Donate. Please get rid of that track suit from the ’90s that you have worn only once; there are lots of donation drop-off areas that accept lightly used/un-used clothing items, you can also help an individual in need!

• Take Before and After Pictures. Taking before and after pictures will help put in perspective just how much stuff you had in a room, and seeing the results after it’s completed is oh so satisfying!

Create Open Spaces

• Remove Excess Furniture: Keep only essential pieces to allow for open, airy spaces.

• Optimize Layout: Arrange furniture to facilitate movement and conversation, avoiding cluttered or cramped areas.

• Use Mirrors: Mirrors can create the illusion of more space and reflect natural light.

Embrace a Neutral Palette

• Soft and Muted Tones: Use a neutral color scheme for walls, furniture, and decor. Whites, grays, and beiges work well.

• Add Texture for Interest: Introduce texture through materials like wood, stone, and natural fibers to add warmth without overwhelming the space.

Incorporate Natural Light

• Maximize Windows: Keep window treatments minimal to allow maximum light. Use sheer curtains or blinds.

• Use Light Colors: Light-colored walls and furnishings reflect light, making the space feel brighter and larger.

• Add Lighting: Use simple, unobtrusive lighting fixtures to enhance natural light.

Choose Simple Decor

• Limit Decorative Items: Select a few meaningful decor pieces rather than filling shelves and surfaces with knick-knacks.

• Functional Decor: Choose decor that also serves a purpose, like a beautiful clock, a piece of art, or a stylish storage solution.

• Natural Elements: Incorporate plants and natural materials to add life and softness to the space.

Maintain a Clean and Organized Home

• Regular Cleaning: Keep your space tidy with regular cleaning routines.

• Organized Storage: Use storage solutions that keep items out of sight but easily accessible.

• Mindful Purchases: Be intentional about what you bring into your home to avoid accumulating unnecessary items.

Benefits of a Minimalist Home

• Reduced Stress: A clutter-free environment can reduce stress and promote a sense of calm.

• Easier to Clean: With fewer items, cleaning and maintaining your home becomes simpler and quicker.

• More Space: Minimalism creates more physical space and can make even small rooms feel larger.

• Enhanced Focus: A minimalist home reduces distractions, helping you to focus on activities and people that matter.

Creating a minimalist home is a journey of intentionality and simplicity. By focusing on quality over quantity, embracing neutral palettes, maximizing natural light, and maintaining an organized space, you can create a home that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also promotes peace and functionality. Adopting a minimalist lifestyle can lead to a more fulfilling, stress-free living environment where you can truly thrive.

Good Grief

Good grief! We say it sometimes to express the emotional weight we carry from the struggles of life. But how often do we recognize that we are suffering from unresolved grief?

The Grief Recovery Institute describes grief as the most powerful of all emotions, while simultaneously being the most neglected and misunderstood experience by grievers and those around them.

While grief is typically associated with the death of a loved one, and rightly so, it is so much more than that. Did you know that we grieve over the break-up of relationships, pet loss, significant changes to our finances, health, careers, and even intangible losses stemming from internalized racism?

Most people are surprised to learn that there are over 40 different types of loss that can result in grief.

While grief itself is normal and natural, being stuck in unresolved grief can cause all kinds of unfavorable conditions including physical disease. In fact, the Grief Recovery Institute conservatively estimates that grief costs American businesses at least $75.1 billion per year in lost productivity, absenteeism, errors and accidents.

There is a hidden cost to grief that remains a blind spot to most businesses and the individuals personally impacted by it.

Understanding the intangible nature of grief and its correlation to racism, was the impetus for Danielle Price and Danyell Goggans to launch Soul Repair 360. They are dedicated Black women, social innovators, with more than 50 years combined experience helping individuals and communities enhance their quality of life. They are also Grief Recovery Method Specialists. They recently combined forces to develop Soul Repair 360, a peer-centered, solutions-focused healing experience for health equity leaders. Their services help change agents build personal and professional capacity to heal from soul wounds and reframe limiting internalized beliefs. Ultimately, to sustain innovation, motivation, authenticity and joy.

For women in general, but especially Black women, navigating the corporate scene automatically comes with “wearing the mask.” If you are unfamiliar with this metaphor, it was made famous by Paul Laurence Dunbar and Dr. Maya Angelou poetically describing the coping techniques implored by Black people to survive in a racially inequitable society.

Grief

Over the decades, Black women have perfected the walk, the talk, and the dress, to climb the ladder of success. They know how to finesse the system, despite it being stacked against them. The unspoken reality of this feat is that the proverbial mask comes at a great cost. It gets heavy. It can start to suffocate, or worse yet, become so familiar that you forget who you really are.

Workplace dynamics and life in general can become overwhelming at times. If you find that you are always in need of an escape, Soul Repair 360 is a more effective way to alleviate the load. It provides a brave space, effective tools, and evidence-based methods to address the stressors of life without judgment.

Danielle and Danyell will be presenting on the topic, The Hidden Cost of Grief, at the 3rd Annual National Executive Women’s Leadership Summit. Plan to attend and hear more about their stories and their incredible work.

Ask SCORE Cleveland

Why should Black Business Women Consider Volunteering as SCORE Mentors in Northeast Ohio?

Volunteering is a noble endeavor that allows individuals to give back to their communities, share their expertise, and foster growth and development in others. For Black women entrepreneurs and small business owners in Northeast Ohio, volunteering as SCORE mentors presents a unique and powerful opportunity to make a significant impact. SCORE, a non-profit organization supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), provides free, confidential business mentoring and training workshops to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Here are the compelling reasons why Black women should consider becoming SCORE mentors:

1. Representation Matters

Black women have historically been underrepresented in business leadership roles. By volunteering as SCORE mentors, Black women can serve as role models for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those from similar backgrounds. Representation is crucial; it inspires confidence and provides tangible proof that success is attainable. When mentees see mentors who look like them and share similar experiences, it can be incredibly empowering and motivating.

2. Leveraging Unique Perspectives

Black women bring unique perspectives and experiences to the table. These insights can be invaluable in mentoring sessions, especially when addressing challenges specific to minority-owned businesses. By sharing their experiences and strategies for overcoming obstacles, Black women mentors can provide nuanced advice that is both practical and relatable. This helps mentees navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship with greater confidence and clarity.

3. Strengthening the Local Economy

Northeast Ohio is a region rich in potential and diversity. It also has a very large and growing minority small business community that critically needs additional support and education to be successful. By volunteering as SCORE mentors, Black women can contribute to the economic development of their communities. Mentoring local entrepreneurs helps create jobs, stimulates economic growth, and fosters innovation. As businesses thrive, the entire community benefits, leading to improved quality of life and greater economic stability.

4. Building a Supportive Network

Volunteering as a SCORE mentor opens doors to a vast network of professionals and business leaders. This network can provide mentors with opportunities for personal and professional growth. Engaging with other mentors, attending workshops, and participating in SCORE events can help mentors expand their own knowledge and skills. Additionally, the relationships built through volunteering can lead to new collaborations and business opportunities.

5. Personal Fulfillment and Growth

Mentoring is a deeply rewarding experience. The act of helping others achieve their goals and dreams brings a sense of fulfillment that is hard to match. Black women who volunteer as SCORE mentors often find that the experience enhances their own lives in unexpected ways. It provides a platform to reflect on their journeys, celebrate their achievements, and continue their legacy of success and leadership.

6. Enhancing Community Resilience

The Heartfelt Mission and Vision of NB2FS

In the vibrant heart of 2013, a spark of compassion flickered into existence within Tania Marie Reyes Holman. This was no ordinary spark—it was a fervent vision to help others, a vision that birthed No Boundaries Preparatory Academy (NBPA) and subsequently, No Boundaries Counseling and Consulting Firm (NBCCF). What started as a humble endeavor fueled by a deep-seated desire to transform lives has grown into No Boundaries to Foster Success (NB2FS), a nonprofit organization with a mission to uplift and empower individuals from all walks of life.

Tania’s story is one of dedication and resilience. From a young age, she felt a profound calling to guide others towards living life without limitations. Her journey began with NBPA, where she nurtured and educated children, planting seeds of confidence and self-worth. As her vision expanded, she founded NBCCF, offering a holistic suite of services that cater to the diverse needs of her community. Faithbased coaching and therapy, educational advocacy, consulting, tutoring, housing for the previously incarcerated, and mentoring for teens and women are just a few of the ways NBCCF fosters growth and healing.

Among Tania’s most cherished dreams is the creation of safe, loving homes for women and children who have faced incarceration, domestic violence, or time in the foster care system.

She envisions small, supportive housing units where they can rebuild their lives surrounded by care and compassion. Through meticulously designed programs, NB2FS aims to reduce homelessness by teaching participants essential survival skills and aiding their self-sufficiency in society. Each person’s journey is unique, and Tania’s personalized approach ensures that everyone receives the support they need.

The heart of NB2FS beats with stories of transformation and hope. Consider Tania’s story, a young woman who emerged from an abusive relationship with her spirit broken but not defeated. Tania found solace and strength within the NB2FS community. She learned essential life skills, received therapy, and most importantly, discovered her selfworth. Today, Tania is a beacon of hope for others, sharing her story and mentoring those who are walking a similar path.

Tania’s journey has not been without its challenges. Despite completing her doctorate while in an abusive relationship, she has always held onto her faith and the support of her loved ones. Her parents’ unwavering belief in her potential, the wisdom gleaned from their experiences, and the encouragement from friends, her sorority sisters at Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, and even strangers, have all played pivotal roles in her success. These influences have molded her into a resilient leader who embodies the very spirit of NB2FS.

Dr. Reyes’ vision extends far beyond immediate support; she is committed to fostering long-term stability and nurturing positive family structures.

NB2FS actively collaborates with child welfare agencies to synchronize transition planning and eliminate homelessness among youth aging out of foster care.

Programs like the updated Family Unification Program (FUP) and the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) rental assistance program are vital in providing these young adults with the resources they need to thrive. Dr. Reyes envisions these programs flourishing in every county and state, ensuring that no young adult faces homelessness during their transition out of foster care.

The dedicated team at NB2FS amplifies the organization’s impact. With over 25 years of experience in Special Education and Adult Education, Dr. Christine Cunningham brings a wealth of knowledge and compassion. Heather Damitio, with her expertise in Public Service and Insurance, and Kia C. Bennett, with her extensive background in Customer Experience and Management, contribute their unique strengths to the NB2FS mission. Together, they form a powerhouse of dedication and passion, driving the organization towards achieving its goals.

NB2FS is more than an organization; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of community and compassion. By supporting NB2FS, you become part of a movement that is transforming lives and creating a world where everyone can live without boundaries. Donations, volunteer efforts, and advocacy can help fulfill Tania’s vision of a society where love, support, and opportunity are available to all.

Join us on this journey of empowerment and transformation. Together, we can make a lasting difference, one life at a time.

Tips for Caring for the Caregiver

Although you may not consider yourself a caregiver, you are. A caregiver is anyone who cares for an ill person. A caregiver is most often a family member or close friend.

Caring for someone can be both rewarding and stressful. It is not unusual to experience a variety of feelings at this time. These feelings are neither good nor bad. They are your feelings. They may affect your life and wellbeing during the time you are providing care.

Over the years, we have learned from caregivers that caring for someone with a serious illness is a lifechanging process. They have taught us that even in the midst of hurt and sadness, there are chances to learn, grow and heal.

Being a caregiver can be a valuable time to create lasting and positive memories together. You may feel a sense of inner peace or a stronger sense of selfworth. You and your loved one may find moments of joy and laughter in your time together; your relationship may become more emotionally intimate. You may find time to close some unfinished business with your loved one, saying things that you need to say.

Caregiving responsibilities can feel overwhelming. Please be aware of:

• Excessive fatigue

• Fear of the unknown

• A loss of control

• A loss of “normal” activities

• Financial worries

• Social isolation

• Emotional challenges

• Feelings of obligation, guilt or resentment

• Difficulty making plans

To effectively care for another person, you need to care for yourself. Here are some valuable suggestions:

• Establish visiting hours so that you can have both support and privacy

• Select a family member or friend to oversee relating updates by phone or email to others who are concerned

• Educate yourself about the condition of the person receiving care. Talk to your physician and your hospice care team

• Realize that no one can be all things to all people. You may not be able to live up to everyone’s expectations; try not to dwell on negative comments

Maintaining good health is a priority. Get enough rest, eat properly and exercise. Identifying your needs as a caregiver is the first step toward taking care of yourself and the person receiving care. Here are some ideas to help you get started. Please talk these over with your hospice care team.

Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money Making Machine

Author of cult classics THE PUMPKIN PLAN and THE TOILET PAPER ENTREPRENEUR offers a simple, counterintuitive cash management solution that will help small businesses break out of the doom spiral and achieve instant profitability.

Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren’t always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz’s PROFIT FIRST system, readers will learn that:

• Following 4 simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances.

• A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line.

• Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth.

With dozens of case studies, practical, step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humor, Michalowicz has the game-changing roadmap for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of.

Tell Me Who You Are: A Road Map for Cultivating Racial Literacy

An eye-opening exploration of race in America

In this deeply inspiring book, Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi recount their experiences talking to people from all walks of life about race and identity on a cross-country tour of America. Spurred by the realization that they had nearly completed high school without hearing any substantive discussion about racism in school, the two young women deferred college admission for a year to collect first-person accounts of how racism plays out in this country every day--and often in unexpected ways.

In TELL ME WHO YOU ARE, Guo and Vulchi reveal the lines that separate us based on race or other perceived differences and how telling our stories--and listening deeply to the stories of others--are the first and most crucial steps we can take towards negating racial inequity in our culture. Featuring interviews with over 150 Americans accompanied by their photographs, this intimate toolkit also offers a deep examination of the seeds of racism and strategies for effecting change.

This groundbreaking book will inspire readers to join Guo and Vulchi in imagining an America in which we can fully understand and appreciate who we are.

This acclaimed postapocalyptic novel of hope and terror from an award-winning author “pairs well with 1984 or THE HANDMAID’S TALE” and includes a foreword by N. K. Jemisin (John Green, NEW YORK TIMES).

When global climate change and economic crises lead to social chaos in the early 2020s, California becomes full of dangers, from pervasive water shortage to masses of vagabonds who will do anything to live to see another day. Fifteen-year-old Lauren Olamina lives inside a gated community with her preacher father, family, and neighbors, sheltered from the surrounding anarchy. In a society where any vulnerability is a risk, she suffers from hyperempathy, a debilitating sensitivity to others’ emotions.

Precocious and clear-eyed, Lauren must make her voice heard in order to protect her loved ones from the imminent disasters her small community stubbornly ignores. But what begins as a fight for survival soon leads to something much more: the birth of a new faith . . . and a startling vision of human destiny.
