Everyone Enjoys a Good Garage

I

n my last column, I talked about the need and interest in featuring a higher number of regular-sized garages, to which many of you responded with pictures and stories, for which I’m very thankful. These garages are going to make fantastic stories! One garage hails from a police officer who’s spent a lifetime riding motorcycles and enjoying older Porsches, specifically the 914s. His garage is a 3-car situation that was slightly oversized to accommodate exceptional storage, lend some shoulder room, and provide space for his innumerous décor. It’s a fun place. The floor is sweet, a police car light bar provides some disco effects, he’s attached a DON’T WALK/WALK sign to the support beam, and he’s amassed a number of neon and lit clocks so he never loses track of time. Not quite Doc Brown, but he’s got some clocks. Another garage came in by way of a BMW motorcycle enthusiast who’s built some space for two-wheeled BMWs that rivals a museum. Not only does he have some seriously impressive and accredited motorcycles, but he has scads of ancient and modern BMW motoring collectibles – from writing implements dating back to the war to racing suits to tie tacks to helmets to advertising posters to trophies to – it goes on and on. All neatly tucked away in a little over two spaces. Another garage came in, admittedly a while ago, from Florida – a gorgeous space of posters and neon a few exotic cars and a whole lot of love. Another one came to us, through a really strange set of events, but the car was made famous by Chevrolet who produced an entire video about its recovery from being sold out of the family in the 1980s. These are four average-sized garages with extraordinary stories among a good number more, so look forward to seeing them in future magazines. I was really excited to see these garages come in. We’re been backlogged for years to publish, but these standardsized garages will balance our offerings greatly. There’s a certain contradiction with garage owners – many want to see more regular-sized garages in the magazine that have been treated to the details and decorating and enthusiasm we all love, but so many owners of these garages are slightly shy, for lack of a better word, telling me they’d rather not be featured because they can’t compare, or worse, compete, with the larger collections and garages GSM often features. Yet, so many people want to see more regular-sized garages. It’s not about competing or comparing, it’s about sharing camaraderie and enthusiasm for a community, the car community. The garage is one of those places where it seems all car guys can come together and share and enjoy company – it’s where Ford guys and Chevy guys can spend time with Ferrari guys and Lamborghini guys and all have a great time reminiscing and enjoying. It’s not about more or bigger or price tags – each garage takes on its caretaker’s personality, or voice, making it truly special, personal. There’s no competing – it’s common ground, respected no matter how big, small, clean, dirty, expensive or budget-minded. Everyone enjoys a good garage, and the stories associated with them. Thank you all for participating. This latest issue, our 8th anniversary issue by the way, is pretty fun – a secret garage graces our cover, a location smack in the middle of a bustling metropolis, yet invisible to everyone. Our old friend, Charlie, finally shows us what he’s been up to in Arizona building a shrine for performance cars, and Cindy brings us another one of her famous Monterey Cicerone. Rodney’s double truck talks about the new USPS stamps and his old toy trucks. Next time, we’ll have a few sweet garages of both large and regular sizes, including one chap in Texas who’s got a couple of cool garages and absolutely loves the color red. He was supposed to be in this issue, but it just wasn’t working out – but, rest assured, JC, August is your issue! Also, look forward to a guy we refer to here in the office as Mr. Ferrari – he’ll be showing us his enthusiasm for all things Prancing Horse. All things considered, the August issue will feature a lot of red. - Don Weberg

T-Bird Tears

A

few friends accuse me of being too attached to my old cars. They are correct. Many years ago I attended the Portland Swap Meet with the intent of coming home with four tires attached to a really great car. I didn’t have any particular car in mind, just one that tugged at my heart and needed a new home. The search was very successful. There, parked at the swap meet, was the most beautiful 1960 Thunderbird that I had ever seen. This bright red and white “squarebird” was as nice, or nicer, than the day it was sitting brand new at a Portland Ford dealership. It had recently undergone a complete restoration that included the interior, exterior, engine and all mechanical systems. The restoration, enhanced by chrome wire wheels, made this car stunning. The term “squarebird” refers to 1958, 1959 and 1960 T-Birds. They have a distinctive squared off style, due to the fins and body sculpturing, and slightly resemble the Caped Crusader’s Batmobile. I struck a deal with the seller and away I drove in my new old car. That night I sat on the steps of my motel room and stared at the Thunderbird. I am not embarrassed to admit that I was so struck with the beauty of the car that a few tears began to flow. Readers not passionate about their cars, new or old, will be confused by this reaction. Car lovers will understand. The tears were the result of appreciating the car’s breathtaking design as the paint and

10

chrome sparkled under the glow of the motel’s neon sign. Eight years of ownership passed during which time the car appeared at over 100 car shows. It was appreciated by car show attendees and, more than once I heard the remark, “I usually don’t care much for ‘squarebirds,’ but I sure like yours.” It brought home an occasional trophy, carried the family on several great sojourns and ended most days looking pretty as it rested in the garage. It never broke down, always caressed its occupants in luxury, and glided down the road like a true bird. I loved the car, but, after eight years, the T-Bird’s glamour was beginning to fade and the cost of refurbishing was not in my budget. It was time to allow someone else to be the car’s caretaker. I advertised it for sale and waited for a new owner to enter the squarebird’s life. It didn’t take long. I made a sale and the new owner said she would pick up the car the following day. That evening I told my wife Jan that I was going to the garage to say goodbye to the T-Bird. I opened the car door and climbed into the driver’s seat. Then it happened; much to my surprise I began bawling. Not just a few tears or a good cry but a racking, sobbing blubberfest. I felt like I was saying a final goodbye to one of my closest friends or relatives. Clearly, I wasn’t handling the farewell very well. But it was too late to reconsider the sale and, after eight years, it was time to move on to the stewardship of a different new old car. The following day the new owner drove off to write the Thunderbird’s next chapter. I didn’t shed any additional tears. Instead I felt sadness combined with best wishes for the T-Bird’s future. I guess I’m still a bit attached to that car. - Lance Lambert

Phil Berg’s Dispatches from the Ultimate Garage Tour

Where the Carmakers Play

H

ere was the mission: Prepare two stories for a brand new magazine from Detroit-based Chevrolet. Find someplace local, a garage that makes a couple new cars look cool. I think I got that. In an era where printed magazines are disappearing in favor of websites, there’s still nothing like slick, coated paper and sharp photos that looks great. Chevy’s marketing folks approved just such a combination branded magazine and semi-catalog, the second edition of which was produced in June of 2015, and came out in print in September. Called New Roads, it’s a biggie, since the audience for the magazine is greater than six million current Chevy owners. Big-name car magazines today barely reach a million readers each month, and their accompanying websites are viewed daily by just slightly more than that number. Each issue of New Roads eats up about forty-two railroad cars full of paper. an enormous amount in the custom brand publishing business, and more than any other of the several dozen publications made by Chevy partner Crain Communications, the privately owned parent company of auto enthusiast magazine Autoweek. New Roads editor Rob Sass, formerly from Hagerty magazine, is the story guy. New Roads art director Jennifer Arnone and photographer Jenny Risher, who has photographed iconic Detroit entertainers such as Iggy Pop, Smokey Robinson, Lily Tomlin, Alice Cooper, Eminem, and Tim Allen, selected Marc Trahan’s restored

12

www.GarageStyleMagazine.com

100-year-old garage out a dozen Ultimate Garages I suggested in the area. Easy-mannered Trahan, 62, is a serious car nut, and recently retired after a 35-year career culminating as executive vice president for Volkswagen of America in 2014. He was lauded for improving quality at the company, and everyone knows how off-the-chart his car and racing passion is. That’s evident here in his private garage, which is hidden off a heavily forested dirt road somewhere near Detroit. So a crew of three drivers, an art director, a photographer and two assistants, an account executive, Trahan, and I spent the day positioning all the vehicles and accessories, just like any magazine shoot. To make a more Chevy-oriented spin we borrowed a couple classics for flavor. Just a mile away was a split window Corvette, and another two miles away was a Chevrolet two-door convertible, in perfect shape from local collectors. Detroit is dense with restored examples of post-war classics from U.S. makers, and local auto fans estimate that there might be up to 100,000 collector cars in the area, far more than any other Midwest metropolitan area. Detroit is likely tied with Buffalo, New York, for the greatest number of sunless days in the country each year, yet sunshine alternated with rain to make great lighting on the garage. To see the result, go to http://www.chevrolet.com/new-roads. html. - Phil Berg

Cannery Lit Six Door Garage A collection built around Bill’s life journeys Text by Reca Martin Images by Don Weberg

ill has a reputation in Pasadena, California, that will speaks volumes. Bill served two years in Vietnam, became a banker, then started his real estate investment company, whose office, formerly a body shop, hosts a garage with a collection that would make any grown man drool. The older brick building is “L” shaped and flanked by a concrete driveway sprinkled with rocky cactus settings throughout. Surrounded by a brick and wrought iron wall, a courtyard setting provides seating, in the corner of which sets an old neon sign reading Fair Oaks Body Shop. Bill’s six roll up metal doors protects his collection that are showcased with barn lights hanging from the beamed wooden ceiling that’s supported by metal truss. possession he inherited from his father, a 1951 Chevy with light grey velour interior and butter cream exterior. Bill restored his father’s classic four years ago and still recalls the day his father relocated 14-year-old Bill and family from Oklahoma to California. The Chevy was Bill’s first collector car, which made him hunger for more. However, he never thought he would fall in love when he purchased his second collector’s item at the age of 21. After his tour in Vietnam, Bill was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina when he met his future wife, Brenda. Their first date was a drive in Bill’s 1963 black on black Stingray Corvette. Since then they’ve been married for 47 prosperous years with two sons, three grandchildren and a grand puppy named Coco. History was also in the making of this fine garage – the Corvette

Gordon’s Chicken Coop Text and Images by Bill Nakasone

n an affluent neighborhood of shoreline properties overlooking the Puget Sound is a large 5-acre estate belonging to Gordon Apker who, upon arriving, jokingly states, “Welcome to my chicken coop.” Gordon purchased this beautiful property over 40 years ago. The former owner, the president of Alaska Steam Ship Company, constructed a building on the grounds to house his collection of exotic birds. When Gordon first saw the property, he immediately envisioned converting the “chicken coop” into an automotive space, and shortly after moving in, Gordon did just that and has since added space to the “chicken coop” for offices, a restoration shop, and multiple showroom areas. His car collection is as varied as is impressive. You will find the 1930’s era represented by his Packard collection. His 1950’s Americana collection has Cadillac, MoPar and Chevrolet all on display. A 1955 Talbot Lago, a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud and a Hudson Italia (and Italian bodied Hudson) reflect his penchant for European prestige automobiles, however, most of his European cars are housed in Arizona and include a Ferrari, an Aston Martin, and Mercedes-Benz among others. He is even into the Barris style of custom with a 1954 Chevrolet Convertible that has been tastefully chopped and customized. He is also a real fan of the Bill Mitchell era of styling at General Motors and has a Buick Riviera and a Cadillac Eldorado from that genre. To understand Gordon’s garage space, one must first understand

Gordon the man. Back in his early 20’s, he was attending seminary school with the goal of becoming a Lutheran Minister. In order to support his family and school expenses, he worked as a mechanic at the local VELTEX gas station until the VELTEX Company fell upon hard times and closed all of their stations. Suddenly, Gordon was without a job and income, but it wasn’t long until he landed a job at a Shakey’s Pizza Parlor. Within two years, Gordon would own his first Shakey’s Pizza Parlor at the age of 23. Fifteen years later, he would be one of the owners of the Shakey’s Pizza Parlor parent company with 297 international locations, 250 franchised locations throughout the continental United States and 35 personally owned locations within the Pacific Northwest. Gordon has recreated a copy of the VELTEX gas station that he used to work at as a centerpiece display in his garage area. “I built that station as a reminder of where I came from,” Gordon said. “In hindsight, it was a favor to get laid off. It made me look at new opportunities and I’m grateful for that.” In Gordon’s administrative offices, a rototiller stands on prominent display incongruently with the rest of the décor. “My Dad was a machinist by trade, but he went through lots of unemployment due to labor strikes and other reasons,” he explained. “He used to have a rototiller to make money to feed the family when work was lean.” Touring the restoration area of his compound, he points to a small lathe against the wall.

Sunset is always a magical time for garages.

Wide Open Spaces Retirement has its rewards Text by Cindy Meitle Images by Bob “PhotoBob” Coffman

C

harlie Arolla has long been a collector of vehicles and automobilia. Having spent 31 ½-years in law enforcement, the former Santa Clara, California chief of police had always found solace in his 2-car garage where he could “reset” after a long day. While considered a dream garage by most, Charlie had long outgrown it, renting a 7,000-sq. ft. storage facility across town for years to house the cars that didn’t fit in the garage. They were rarely used because of the trek just to get to them. Tired of not having all his toys in one place, he decided a bigger garage was in order. While visiting friends in Arizona, Charlie and his wife, Snookie, realized Arizona was the place to cost-effectively purchase their dream home and build a bigger garage which was unrealistic in the San Francisco Bay Area due to real estate prices, lot sizes, etc. The home they bought near Scottsdale came equipped with Snookie’s dream kitchen and attached 4-car garage. They decided to position the new dream garage across from the house so it formed a nice

enclave, creating a plaza environment with a fountain as the focal point at the entrance. Daughter Cristina would stay behind at the California house to enjoy her very own dream garage with all parties visiting one another on a regular basis. In November, 2014, the Arolla’s contacted Scottsdale-based architect Tyler Green. Final garage plans were ready in December for a structure that would mimic the Tuscan-style home with clay tile roof, offering a second story loft, office, restroom, and plenty of space for the mostly late model Mustangs and early Porsche 911s. Tall 18-foot walls would offer plenty of space to showcase a vast collection of event posters and automotive art collected throughout the years at events like those during the famed Monterey Car Week. In March, 2015, McKenzie Brothers Construction began the project, led by Jimmy Sheehan. After trenching, rebar, foundation plumbing, and electrical were completed, the concrete slab was poured. Wood was brought in to begin framing. The 18-foot exterior slab walls were constructed on site and erected with a large

In Memory of

Larry Barber

D

ale Carnegie may well have taken tips from Larry Barber, because Larry had a natural knack for making friends. One of our Monterey Peninsula car guys, Larry organized the Fiesta Run to the Fun Car Show each August, held a week prior to Pebble Beach Week, helped Frank DiPaola with the Mission Classic at the Carmel Mission during Pebble Beach Week, and helped us more than a great deal in organizing the annual Garage Style Magazine Monterey Peninsula Garage Tour. Beyond sadly, Larry passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on March 25, 2016. His garage in Carmel Valley was a work of art unto itself, a beautiful, purpose-built structure that lent a sort of wooden cabin feel filled with treasures of automobilia and petroliana gathered over the decades. Like a second home, Larry’s garage served as home base for us during Pebble Beach Week where we could receive packages, organize and assemble gift bags, and relax and hang out. He would always help us with anything we needed, from packing bags to checking on garage owners to photography to running an errand. Largely because of Larry, the Garage Tours were a success. He was a constant in the local car scene, which helped us greatly to discover new garages and collections to feature in the magazine and present on the Garage Tour. But more importantly than all of that and then some, Larry was a great person. He was the kind of guy you wanted to hang out with and share stories, especially about cars. Infinitely proud of his family, Larry often spoke at length about their accomplishments, grandkids, projects, and more. He beamed over stories of his wife Rosemarie, daughter Janis and her husband and two children, son Mark, and enjoyed sharing stories about projects he was working on with his brother, Mike. Likewise, they were proud of Larry. An exemplary family, dinner

and time with them was always fun. Winning friends and influencing people came naturally to Larry. He’ll be more than missed, but never forgotten – no one that inspiring can ever fade out completely.

STEVE MCQUEEN: THE RACE OF HIS LIFE Marcelo Abeal Steve McQueen had a terrible childhood. This made him the man he was. Abandoned by his father before he was born and left aside by his mother, he grew up almost like an orphan until he was an adolescent and became the greatest Hollywood star ever. McQueen was a magnet at the box office because, rather than an actor, he was a style. He understood and took advantage of this, even in spite of making the list of his enemies even longer. People said he was a very difficult person, simply because he was not a tame lamb which could be easily handled. He knew what was good for him. He argued to death with directors to have things done his own way. He acted like this in all aspects of life, always on the edge. By the time he died, he had accumulated 55 cars, 210 motorbikes and was beginning to take an interest in old airplanes. But his love was not just collecting. He used to say ”

I’m not sure whether I’m an actor who competes or a driver who acts”. Marcelo Abeal, the author, is an enthusiastic fan of Steve, as well as an actor and stuntman himself. After doing thorough research on Steve’s life for over three years, he now shares his work in this unique compilation of observations, anecdotes, exclusive interviews and comments made by close friends, colleagues and people who knew Steve very well. Steve’s most memorable films are “The Magnificent Seven”, “The Great Escape” (exclusive comment by Tim Gibbs, stunt), “Bullitt” (exclusive interview to Don Gordon, one of his best friends), “Le Mans”, “The Getaway”, “Papillon”, “Tom Horn” (exclusive interview with his friend, actor Mel Novak), and the series “Wanted Dead or Alive” (exclusive interview with Loren Janes, his stunt all his life). Plus, an interview with the last doctor who assisted him, Dr. Cesar Santos Vargas.

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER Delius Klasing

Similarly, the three corresponding books on this high-tech vehicle deliver a whole new reading experience. There is the ‘picture book’ filled with opulent images from all the development phases of the 918 Spyder; the ‘story book’ that tells the thrilling tale of this car, which marks one of the decisive turning points in Porsche history; and, finally, there is the ‘fact book’ with all the relevant facts and figures on the 918 Spyder. Text in English and German.

This trilogy on the Porsche 918 Spyder is like the car itself - passionate, focused, spectacular. The total of three motors in this super sports car - which is still the only production vehicle to have driven the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes - represent a whole new dimension of driving.

Matt’s

column

The Camfather’s backyard

E

d Iskenderian is 94 years old, and he still goes to work most days. If you are in any way an enthusiast of drag racing, the Bonneville Salt Flats, top speed racing on California’s “dry lakes” or the flathead Ford V-8, you’ll know Isky as one of the Founding Fathers of the aftermarket performance industry. His business, Isky Racing Cams, was born in South Central LA and still lives in nearby Gardena. Ed’s shop sits on about two acres of property, and while a substantial portion of that is covered by office buildings, machine shop and production facility, and warehouse space and such. But that leaves plenty of space for Ed’s treasure, as he calls it. The back half of his property, which used to be dedicated to employee parking, is filled fence to fence with used up and obsolete machining equipment, engine blocks, and a small fleet of non-running cars. Now, this may sound like an unabashed plug for my upcoming book “Isky: America’s Camfather, The Ed Iskenderian Story” which will be out this fall, and it kind of is just that, so I apologize in advance. While researching the book, I’ve spent days and hours interviewing Ed one on one, tape recorder in hand. And about as much time prowling this fabulous property. Some people would label Ed a hoarder, but it’s really something more than that. Ed was a kid when the stock market crashed in 1929 and is a child of the depression, and he’s from an era and ethos where you simply don’t throw anything away because you

don’t know when you may need it. Waste no, want not. Ed loved showing me all around the yard, proudly pointing out racing engine genius Ed Winfield’s original cam grinding machine, or a drill press or other machine tool that Isky bought military surplus when he first opened shop in Culver City in1946. Ed drives big Cadillac’s every day, and a couple of his worn out castoffs sit in quiet retirement in the Southern California sunshine of Ed’s back lot. And Ed knows every piece of stuff that’s back there, and if something in the main shop breaks and needs repair, there’s a good chance he can find a suitable replacement out back on a dead machine. And – please don’t ask – none of it’s for sale nor particularly open to the public. Yet it is a fact that if Isky or his family ever decides to move the business or sell it or shut it down, some scrap metal dealer is really going to score by the ton. The only thing missing is a “junkyard dog.” Because Isky won’t let you call his toybox a junkyard. It’s a playground for those who love machine tools, camshafts, and old used cars and trucks. And the sound of metal rusting. The legendary speed parts maker Ed Iskenderian has surprised a lot of people in his life creating things they said just wouldn’t work. And his backyard playground proves yet again that one man’s trash is indeed another man’s treasure. - Matt Stone

Garage

meanings

In the Garage with Cindy Meitle

Scott Rogers, Car Enthusiast CM: What is your favorite item in the garage and why? SR: I have a pool table in the center of my garage. Every once in a while I take a crack at the balls. It’s a great way to think, especially if I’m in the middle of a project and I’ve hit a snag. I also have a guitar vault in my garage to safely store my instruments. I’ll grab a Gretsch, sit on a stool and jam for a bit in my own private paradise. CM: What is one item you have always wanted in your garage that you hope to one day acquire and why do you want it so much? SR: A 1932 Ford Coupe Hi-Boy. I’m a Rockabilly until the day I die, and I’ve always lusted after them. I haven’t had a vehicle to wrench on in years because I’m busy with my career, and I would love to just tinker with the thing, admire it, and take my lady for long drives to nowhere on the weekends. CM: What’s the strangest item in your garage? How was it acquired and why does it remain in your garage? SR: A Colin Kaepernick prayer candle. My San Francisco Forty Niners really sucked during the 2015 season. My girlfriend bought me the candle thinking it might not only be a fun addition to my Niner’s display in the garage, but maybe bring us some luck. So far, it hasn’t worked. I have an Elvis candle as well. I had an Elvis bathroom above my last garage and until I have the space again, the Elvis memorabilia remains in boxes, except the candle of course. CM: What are you doing most of the time when in your garage? SR: Regrouping. I’m a senior Project Manager for a Union Electrical Contractor. I work in an uptight, testosterone-filled environment. At the end of an intense 66

www.GarageStyleMagazine.com

day, I enjoy cracking a beer in the garage and just sitting in the middle of my tools and gadgets. It might be something as mundane as cleaning a hand tool or organizing screws, but it calms me and makes me a nicer person…and my woman likes that…a lot. CM: Did you spend much time in the garage growing up? What are your memories? SR: My dad worked very hard throughout my childhood to provide a good life for his family. When he wasn’t at work, he was usually remodeling one of the many homes we lived in, and he spent a great deal of time in the garage. I can always visualize him sanding, hammering or measuring something while talking to him in the garage. I also spent a great deal of time in my buddy’s garages as a teen, building motorcycles and cars at a young age, mostly because it fit our Rockabilly lifestyle. Those were great times. CM: Give me a quote about the garage. “When I’m feeling lost, I can usually find myself in the garage after an hour or so.”
