a) Churburg Castle and the Sluderno (Schludernser) Waalweg Trails From Sluderno (Schluderns) at 921 m, follow signs for Churburg, along a wide footpath that runs east in switchbacks through the forest, about 20 minutes up to Churburg Castle (999 m; you can visit the castle on a guided tour). From there, continue up on the wide Trail No. 20, through meadows, to Vernalhof Farm at 1,152 m; 1 hour from Sluderno (Schluderns). Follow the trail alongside the Bergwaal water channel, which begins here (No. 17; safety railings in exposed areas), through forested but steep and rocky slopes, into the ravine of Saldurbach Stream (1,200 m). Then take the short pathway that leads down to the stream, and cross the bridge; on the other side, go up to the Leitenwaal water channel and follow the Waalweg trail that runs alongside it (still No. 17); this trail also has bars and railings where it is exposed. Continue west along the slope, which ranges from steep to vertical, to Ganglegg, which is located on the valley side, adjacent to the water channel: this wooded knoll is home to the prehistoric site (there are walls, remains of huts and information panels). After you have a look around, follow the Waalweg alongside the canal again to Trail No. 17/18, which leads down into the valley; starting from the next road fork (No. 18), the trail leads through bushes and past Monte Calvario (Kalvarienberg) down to Sluderno; 45 minutes from Ganglegg; 2.5 hrs from Vernalhof Farm

b) From Ciardes (Tschars) to Juval Castle The starting point is the village centre of Ciardes (Tschars) at 625 metres. Follow Trail No. 1A: after 20 minutes, you'll reach the Schnalswaal Trail (signposted). Keep right, following Trail No 3. running almost flat and occasionally slightly uphill, along the Waal water channel, heading east to Sonnenhof Tavern and continuing on to Schlosshof Tavern. From there, following a scenic little trail, you will reach Juval Castle after another 20 minutes. Total walking time from Ciardes is 1.5 hours. Return on the brick road marked Trail No. 1 to Sonnenhof and onto the Stabener Schnalswaal, another little channel with trail running alongside, that you'll cross. Turn right and head west until you reach the end of the canal. A wider trail takes you on to Falzrohr Farm, past a few scattered inns and taverns and eventually on a small paved road back to Ciardes.

c) The Lichtenberger alpine pastures Begin in the village of Lichtenberg, in the upper Val Venosta (Vinschgau) Valley, at an elevation of 927 metres and located between Prad (Prato) and Glorenza (Glurns). Go south, following markings for Trail No. 12 (initially a farm access road, later a sometimes steep forest road), via Pineithof Farm and continuing up to Platzhof Farm (1,354 m). From there, continue south through shady forested slopes, sometimes a moderate grade and sometimes very steep, up to the little Schartalm alpine farm (1,829 m); a good 2.5 hours from the starting point. From there, stay with Trail No. 13 along a high-alpine trail, which is sometimes flat and sometimes a bit steep, through forested hillsides and up to a mountain meadow with a weather cross (2,063 m). Continue a bit further into Gutfalltal Valley and to the main mountain huts of the Lichtenberger alpine pastures (Lichtenberger Alm, Dorferalm alpine farms; 2,066 m); about 3.5 hours from the village of Lichtenberg. Descent: Follow the good trail, which is initially unlabeled but later marked No. 14, that crosses the pastures and forested slopes, towards the Pazzinhรถfe Farms (approx. 1,540 m). Continue following Trail No. 14, sometimes through forest and sometimes through the meadows of the Lichtenberger Farm, which runs just off the farm road (Hรถfestraร e) down to Lichtenberg; about 2.5 hours from the Alm.

d) The Plano (Planeil) alpine pastures - Directions The starting point is the village of Planeil at 1,599 m; approach is via the road from Malles (Mals). Follow the broad valley trail (No. 6), which is beautiful and only has a slight uphill grade; you’ll cross grassy slopes until you come to what remains of Petesetteshof Farm on your right. Shortly afterwards, turn left on broad trail, which has wonderful views and an intermediate grade: this trail leads up to the Planeiler Alm alpine pastures (2,069 m) just under 2 hours from Planeil. Descent: From the alpine pasture hut, follow the road that leads out of the valley through the hilly pastures, first flat then a short downhill segment and then flat again, back out above Planeil, and then a steep grade back down to the starting point; about 1.5 hours from the Alm.

e) Walk around Lago di Resia/Reschensee Lake Along this hike, you’ll have splendid views of Lago di Resia Lake, which was created by the building of a dam, and the sunken tower of the old city of Graun, the last visible remnant of the village that was flooded in the process. Across the dam, you’ll reach the eastern shore of Lago di Resia Lake: from there, it’s an easy walk back to Resia/Reschen. The Route Starting in the artisan district of the old town of Resia, walk towards Pitzerbach along the Rojenstraße road. Turn left off of the road after about 200 metres. Follow the newly constructed bike path, through the hamlet of Giern, and continue up to the dam. f) Alta Via di Vallelunga (Große Langtauferer Höhenweg) High Trail Ascent: From Curon (1,520 m, by the reservoir at the top of the Val Venosta) route 4 runs up a zigzag path through larches, then across a meadow, leading to the Rossböden pastures and Lake Pedross (2,602 m; 3 hours). – High route: from the lake continue on route 4, on gentle ups and downs around a ridge, and walk along several ponds and the lakes of Gschweller- or Schwemmseen (route 7 leads up to to the beautiful hidden Lake Kapplersee.) You can easily cross the rocky south ridge of the Nauderer Hennesiegelspitze Peak, then walk downhill for 10 minutes. At an intersection continue on route 4 to walk up the gentle slopes of Mount Roter Schragen, and reach route 1 and the stream at the top of the Melag Valley (2,540 m; 5 - 6 hours from Lake Pedross). – Descent: on route 1 you walk down a steep path along a solitary crevice and the stream to the village of Melag (1,915 m; 1.5 hours). g) Trek to the Piz Cotschen-Rötelspitze This hike takes you first to the Dreisprachenspitze Peak (which defines the border between "three languages": Lombardo, German, and Romansch), continues on a broad, almost level ridge, and eventually reaches the mountain summit. From the Stelvio Pass (2,757 m, parking, hotels, shops) a broad path takes you to the Rifugio Garibaldi, on the Dreisprachenspitze Peak (2,838 m, 20 minutes). Following the directions to the «Sella Piz Cotschen», continue on a broad, almost level ridge; turn left at the intersection on a marked route, which leads to the Sella Piz Cotschen (2,925 m). Turn left again, walking up the rocky path, taking care to avoid the crevice, to reach the summit (3,026 m; 1.5 hours). Return is via the same route. Alternative route: having returned to the «Sella Piz Cotschen», we walk down the next ridge towards the small Lake Goldsee; we take the high route to the west and return to the Rifugio Garibaldi and then the pass (1.5 hours).

h) Hintere Schöntaufspitze The curvy road takes you to a height of over 2000 m and the metered car park near Enzianhütte, a serviced hut. From the many signposts select Zufallhütte, then turn right at the short flat section. No. 151 leads you to Madritschjoch. This is not your destination but an important junction. The track continues with a mixture of steep paths and flat sections through the wide Madritschtal – with Veneziaspitze, Köllkuppe and other glacier peaks surrounding you, while in the distance you can already catch a glimpse of the Hintere Schöntaufspitze. Even in mid-summer, early risers will encounter more rock cairns serving as signposts than people here. But many will welcome this feeling of seclusion. The final few hundred vertical meters below Madritschjoch are quite steep – and looking further above you will see groups of climbers who chose the more popular Sulden side for the ascent. The pass offers a fantastic view: Königspitze, Zebrù and Ortler are lining up, with Cevedale, Zufallspitzen, Vertainspitze and a few other spectacular mountains, all over 3000 m, surrounding the three famous peaks. Only 200 vertical meters, mainly over rubble, now separate you from the top of the Hintere Schöntaufspitze. The peak itself is not spectacular, but the view of the surrounding mountains around the Ortler is truly magnificent. For the descent follow the same route.

i) Trek to the Rifugio Sesvenna In the upper Val Venosta, from Burgusio - Burgeis we drive along the village of Slingia - Schlinig (1,738 m, parking). The main road on the shaded side passes by two mountain huts (with refreshment area) and a waterfall and leads to the Rifugio Sesvenna. You return on the same way.

j) Monte Upi (Upikopf) Mountain Starting from Glieshof Hotel (1,807 m), follow Trail No. 9, which is quite wide, through the forest and grassland for about 1 hour up to the Malga di Upi (Upiaalm) alpine pasture (2,225 m). Continue up a moderately steep mountain path to the outlet of Upisee Lake (2,552 m; about 2 hours from the starting point). Turn left from here, (NOT from the east side of the lake where the tributary is located!). Continue onto the main road and follow Trail No. 9 to a noticeable grassy ridge (note: sometimes there are no visible tracks) and on to the foot of the mountain. Still following Trail No. 9, climb the rocky and rugged steep slope. Finally, onto a less steep path in the southwest ridge of the mountain to the highest point (3,175m); about 2 hours from Upisee Lake. Descent: Return using the same trail.

21

22

k) Piz Chavalatsch From the car park, follow track No. 14 up to the point where track No. 14B branches off. Follow this path up to the Tschiggonh端tte. From here, continue up to the crossing point with track No. 14A which takes you uphill to Rifairscharte. Now follow marking 14 to Piz Chavalatsch. The descent is via the same route.

l) Croda di Cengles (Tschenglser Hochwand) Mountain Tschenglser Hochwand Mountain is a mighty bastion of the Venosta Valley and is among South Tyrol's most inaccessible mountains. To climb it, choose from three different trails. From the village of Santa Gertrude a Solda (St. Gertraud in Sulden) at 1,844metres, cross over to the east side of the valley on the road and then take Trail No. 5, which is quite steep, towards the northeast, through the Valle di Zay (Zaytal) Valley and up to the Rifugio Serristori (D端sseldorfer H端tte) mountain hut (2,724 m; 2.5 hours). From the hut take, take Trail No. 5 over boulders and slightly uphill to a fork, where you turn left (sign). Continue on a scree slope up to the foot of the steep south ridge of the summit. From there either a) turn left following the signs for Normalweg, climbing through a steep channel into a notch and then right, to reach over a partially secured via ferrata (fixed rope climbing route) to the summit or b) to turn right, climbing one of the two via ferrata routes up to the very steep south ridge of the summit (3,375m); 2.5 hours from the cottage. Recommended descent: follow the signage for Normalweg.
