Message from the Executive Director Welcome to the 9th Annual Staff Day. On April 19, 1965, Electronics Magazine published a paper by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in which he made a prediction about the semiconductor industry, now known popularly as Moore’s Law. Moore stated that the number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years, and this prediction has become shorthand for the rapid technological change that we see not only in the world around us, but throughout the library field as well. The District has been a leader in the utilization of technology to enhance staff productivity and improve the patron experience. During this past year, the District selected an RFID vendor and we are well on our way toward integrating Radio Frequency Identification into the way we do business. RFID is an inventory technology that will track, locate and manage library items. It will shorten the time it takes to check in and check out materials, and will help the District deliver items among District branches faster, getting them into the hands of patrons sooner. The District has made wireless technology available to patrons in all urban branches and several outlying ones, and our PC replacement program ensures that desktop computers are replaced every four years in order to provide patrons and staff with the powerful and current tools they expect and require.

We have integrated self check into our urban branches, along with the capability for paying fines and fees at the same time patrons check out materials. We have integrated the library catalog into our web site and continue to look for ways to improve and expand our on-line resources to improve usability for our customers. We’ve expanded our downloadable eMedia collection and launched a message board for teens, a book discussion blog and RSS feeds that bring District resources into the email in-boxes of patrons who sign up for the service. We are in the process of revisiting our web site to give it a facelift, not only in terms of appearance, but to improve and expand its functionality and integrate some of the emerging “Web 2.0” technologies including social networking. It’s an exciting time for the District and this year’s staff day theme, “Technology: Plugging into the Future,” couldn’t be timelier. I hope you have a great day with your colleagues and enjoy the information and resources the Staff Day Committee has worked hard to bring you. Sincerely,

Daniel L. Walters Executive Director
