An inductee to the Vintners Hall of Fame, Miljenko “Mike” Grgich is a legend in the Napa Valley. Over the past 50 years, Mike’s wines, crafted in the classic Old World tradition, have won a stream of California and international prizes, establishing Grgich Hills Estate as one of the premier wineries in the U.S. and the world. Passionate and relentless in his quest for quality, Mike has also helped pioneer a number of significant breakthroughs in California winemaking techniques, including the use of cold sterilization and malolactic fermentation and the use of oak barrels for proper aging.

Mike’s most celebrated achievement came in 1976 when a Chardonnay he crafted for Chateau Montelena beat the very best wines in France in a now famous blind tasting in Paris. This event that stunned the wine world catapulted the Napa Valley into thefront ranks of the leading wine-producing regions of the world. 2023 is the 100th birthday of Mike.

PUTTING...HOW TO GET YOUR GOLF BALL ON LINE

Getting your golf ball on line starts with your setup. Correct ball placement is important if you want to ensure you’re aligned with your target. You might think you’re lined up towards your target, but until you take the time to practice and train your perception, you can’t fully dismiss your setup as a contributing factor to your misses.

One tool we recommend you use to practice your alignment is an elevated string line that will help you visualize what a straight putt setup actually looks like on the putting green. It’s simple to use an elevated string line and, because it’s so lightweight, it’s easy to take it with you wherever you go.

To start, find a straight putt on the practice green. If the ball is breaking left, move to the left and roll it again until the putt straightens out. Then, place one of the sticks attached to the string into the ground a few inches behind the hole. Pull the string across the hole toward the origin of your straight putt and insert the second stick into the ground far enough away so that the string is tight.

Using the string as your guide, line your golf ball up to the hole and to the string directly above it; the ball can be anywhere from 5 to 10 feet away from the hole depending on the length of your string. Now you know with certainty that the ball has a straight path toward the hole. Start making some putts and adjust the string as necessary until you’re consistently starting them and ending them on the same line. You will be able to see if the ball goes offline as you practice.

We recommend that once you’ve done this, remove the string and then use your dominant eye to line up the golf ball to the hole. Train yourself to recognize your setup and putter alignment by sight so you have a reference when you’re on the golf course.

To figure out your dominant eye , simply form a triangle with your pointer fingers and thumbs from both hands in front of you and gently guide them back towards your face; whichever eye the triangle centers over is your dominant eye.

TAYLORMADE BRNR MINI DRIVER

The 2023 installment of TaylorMade’s Mini Driver’s franchise — which, in recent years, has included the nostalgic nods of the Original One and 300 Mini Drivers — is the 304cc BRNR Mini Driver.

Click here to see how they built Tommy Fleetwood’s BRNR Mini.

WHY PLAY A MINI DRIVER?

TaylorMade finds two types of golfers gravitate toward a mini driver.

In the first case, it’s an addition to a standard driver: Players looking for a “fairway finder” driver without giving up too much distance that can also be hit off the deck.

Ti Bubble 2-inspired K-sole for smooth turf interaction and “driver off the deck” possibilities.

A 13-gram weight in the back of the club and a 1.5-gram weight in the front can be adjusted to fine-tune launch and spin.

Placing the heavier weight forward reduces spin by approximately 200 RPMs, according to the company.

Second, TaylorMade recommends giving a mini a go to golfers who struggle to hit 460 cc drivers. It’s a better alternative than a 3-wood off the tee. Give it a try at our next Taylor Made Fitting Experience on Saturday, June 10th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

RACQUET SPORTS TIP OF THE MONTH

MINDFULNESS OF SERVING - Whether you are an avid pickleball player or tennis player, the serve is one of the most important shots in the game. The serve not only starts the point, but it sets you up for success after hitting one shot. This is the time to slow down, relax, focus on your serve location. Like a pitcher in baseball, you want to keep you opponents (returner) on their heels not knowing where you are serving to. Mixing up your serve location and varying different speeds and spin on the serve are crucial to giving your team the best chance to win that individual point. This is the one shot that you can practice on your own to develop further, giving you more confidence and consistency when playing next. Use a target to give yourself a great visual when practicing your serve. Till next time focus on mixing it up!

YOUR BRAIN ON EXERCISE

- By Fitness Specialist, Bev Stewart

As a regular member to Strata Fit, you’ve probably noticed that after a workout on the Hydro Rower, interval training on the cardio equipment, or in a class that makes you sweat, you leave feeling rejuvenated and invigorated. What causes this feeling?

It’s the change in brain biochemistry ! Your brain has 100 billion neuron cells, which transmit chemical signals (neurotransmitters) that are responsible for how we feel, think and behave. Two of these neurotransmitters--endorphins and serotonin---are responsible for why you feel good when you exercise. Endorphins are released by your brain during aerobic (“cardio”) exercise; and give you that “I feel great” feeling, by blocking pain. This feeling can come from briskly walking your dog to running a marathon.

Serotonin boosts your mood and makes you feel good; and serotonin levels can increase from strength training and other forms of exercise besides aerobic exercise. (The most prescribed anti-depressant medications work by pumping more serotonin into the brain.)

Another brain compound promotes cognitive health: A protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF); and the best way to trigger production of BDNF protein is to exercise.

The above information is taken from this article by the American Council on Exercise.

LAPOINT & SAVAGE WEDDING

Bill & Jamieson had a very memorable wedding recepton with us in 2022. With the majority of their guests coming in from out of state, they wanted to incorporate the elements of Colorado into their wedding theme. A great example of how they did was by adding a mountain scenery to their menus on each place setting. They also named their signature cocktails “Red Rocks” and “Colorado Mule” which featured local Colorado spirits.

There are many ways couples can incorporate their venue location theme into their wedding by just adding small details to their decor, cuisine and/or giving their guests favors for from local small businesses.

WEDDING HIGHLIGHT

There is a special bond between a father and daughter that is brought into focus throughout the wedding planning process. The father of the bride is a great resource for helping brides find their center and providing them with a support system throughout the big day. They also have a few responsibilities on the wedding day such as walking the bride down the aisle and the time you will shed the most tears during the sweet father daughter dance.

Happy Father’s Day from the Weddings Team at Garden of the Gods Resort and Club! We are fortunate to work with such amazing fathers. Cherish your loved ones and take the time to celebrate the amazing father figures in your life.

Jamieson’s father coordinated with our weddings team and Director of Racquet Sports, Greg Hearrt, to set up pickleball matches for one of the days during their wedding weekend.

All of the guests who were in town were encouraged to partcipate. This activity was a great way to make the guests feel included and spend some additional time with the couple.

Here are some ways to incorporate your dad on the big day:

• Specifically thank the parents in the ceremony script or in the programs

• Escorting the bride down the aisle

• Giving a toast

• Being prepared for photos

• Providing a song for the father and daughter dance

• Helping wrap up any loose ends after the wedding day

Please join us in congratulating Jesse Murillo on his promotion to Food and Beverage Manager!

Jesse began Food and Beverage career at the Hotel Elegante Conference and Event Center. Spending nearly two years working his way up from host to room service attendant, server, bartender and eventually Assistant Food and Beverage Manager. He spent 2 years there in management helping to refine training procedures, develop inventory systems and most importantly drive team culture. Leading a staff of 32 people to service 5 different Food and Beverage Outlets and 400 guest rooms.

Jesse joined the Garden of the Gods Resort & Club just over 2 years ago in the midst of the pandemic to learn more about the realm of fine dining. He worked through every line level position in his first 6 months here. Once he began working as a Supervisor and Assistant Manager, a lot of his focus has been on how we can continue to refine our service and continue to educate the staff in ways that allow them to best serve the guests. Resulting in higher guest ratings in both the Rocks and Grand View; and Grand View being recognized as OpenTable Diner’s Choice.

Jesse has been awarded as Leader of the Month in the 2022 and Leader of the Year for 2022.

In his free time, he loves to workout, running, cooking, and hiking with his wife.
