GARDEN
OF THE GODS RESORT AND CLUB MEMBER NEWSLETTER

Dear Members,

Welcome to March at Garden of the Gods Resort and Club.

Once again, we have a plethora of club offerings for your enjoyment this month. Our team continues to get creative and add value to your membership by creating fun and varied options for your enjoyment. Amongst many things and to highlight a few:

Greg Heartt, our Director of Racquet Sports, is offering a wide variety of both tennis and pickleball clinics, camps, events, and round robins. Like all of us, Rich Parker is excited to see spring and has already begun registrations for our summer member tournaments and has an exciting array of club demo fitting days arranged from April through July. Rich also shares some practical advice regarding nutrition and how eating well can help everywhere in your life, including in the course of your game.

We had record attendance last month at our Rombauer Napa Winery dinner with great reviews and we have another exciting dinner this month paired uniquely with a Denver-based and nationally recognized distillery called The Family Jones distillery. Make your bookings soon for this sure-to-be-sold-out event. And, we’re getting ready for Easter celebrations, so make your reservations soon for all the special events on Sunday, April 9th .

Our new Vice President of Culinary, Keith Theodore, is settling in well and I have heard from many of you already about positive enhancements to our food quality, even though he has only been on board for a few weeks. The renovation of the Grand View Dining Room and Patio progresses well and will be re-opened at the end of April with a whole new look and new menus.

We have been having an unusually large number of walk-ins to our dining rooms recently, and we have been able to accommodate everyone since it is winter. We do encourage you however to make advance reservations through the member portal and electronically in advance, so that we can expect you and be ready to provide you with the best service, but also as we get into spring and summer season, so as to not disappoint you by not having availability. If you need help learning how to use the reservation system through the portal, stop by or call our membership team. It’s a great and easy way to make a reservation, receive a reminder and cancel the reservation easily if needed.

Our very own Clinical Director and Cardiologist Dr. Michael Barber had a heart health seminar last month and continues in this membership newsletter with some insightful heart health advice for us all. He is truly a gem and an incredible doctor, so I hope that you enjoy his advice and pass it along to others.

It’s time to start physically getting ready for spring and summer activities. Please visit our fitness staff for those important stretches, weight training, and endurance training that will have you ready for whatever outdoor activity you choose to do; our fitness team members led by Shahid Rahman are here for you.

Finally, having improved the format, content, and look of our membership newsletter last year, we are making some further enhancements to the publication to make it even more engaging and useful, and you should look for enhancements beginning with this edition.

Wishing you all an amazing March and wishing you wellness,

10 2023 MARCH | STRATA MED | SPA | FIT GARDEN OF THE GODS RESORT AND CLUB MEMBER NEWSLETTER

One of the very best gifts you can give your heart is physical activity. In fact, pairing regular exercise with a Mediterranean-style diet, maintaining a normal weight, and not smoking is a great protection plan against coronary artery disease and vascular disease, Johns Hopkins research has found.

Not convinced such simple steps could be so powerful? These four lifestyle factors reduced the chance of death from all causes by 80 percent over the eight-year period that more than 6,200 subjects were tracked.

“For certain heart conditions, exercise can be as powerful as some medications,” says Johns Hopkins expert Kerry Stewart, Ed.D.

Understanding just how physical activity benefits your heart can be strong motivation to get moving to get moving more. Read what to know on the next page.

2023 MARCH | STRATA MED | SPA | FIT GARDEN OF THE GODS RESORT AND CLUB MEMBER NEWSLETTER 11
SEVEN HEART BENEFITS OF EXERCISE: BY DR. MICHAEL BARBER

1. Exercise lowers blood pressure. Exercise works like beta-blocker medication to slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure (at rest and when exercising). High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and is positively impacted by regular exercise.

2. Exercise is key to weight control. Especially when combined with a smart diet, being physically active is an essential component for losing weight and even more important for keeping it off, Stewart says which in turn helps optimize heart health. Being overweight puts stress on the heart and is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

3. Exercise helps strengthen muscles and improve efficiency. A combination of aerobic workouts (which, depending on your fitness level, can include walking, running, swimming, and other vigorous heart-pumping exercise) and strength training (weightlifting, resistance training) is considered best for heart health. These exercises improve the muscles’ ability to draw oxygen from the circulating blood. That reduces the need for the heart a muscular organ itself to work harder to pump more blood to the muscles, whatever your age.

4. Exercise can help you quit smoking. As smokers become more fit, they often quit. And people who are fit in the first place are less likely to ever start smoking, which is one of the top risk factors for heart disease because it damages the structure and function of blood vessels.

5. Exercise can stop or slow the development of diabetes. Johns Hopkins research has shown that when combined with strength training, regular aerobic exercise such as cycling, brisk walking, or swimming can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by over 50% by allowing the muscles to better process glycogen, a fuel for energy, which when impaired, leads to excessive blood sugars, and thus diabetes.

6. Exercise lowers stress. Stress hormones can put an extra burden on the heart. Exercise— whether aerobic (like running), resistance-oriented (like weight training) or flexibilityfocused (like yoga) can help you relax and ease stress.

7. Exercise reduces inflammation. With regular exercise, chronic inflammation is reduced as the body adapts to the challenge of exercise on many bodily systems. This is an important factor for reducing the adverse effects of many of the diseases just mentioned.

ADDING THE POWER OF NUTRITION TO YOUR GAME BY DIRECTOR OF GOLF, RICH PARKER

Golfers have the ability to gain that intangible, competitive edge both on the course and off by adding the power of nutrition to their game. In addition to increased levels of energy, mental focus and endurance, staying healthy results in longer lasting athletic condition for everyone.

Instead of relying on the nutritional myth of “carbo-loading” with all kinds of carbohydrates, start the day with a complete and balanced superfood smoothie breakfast. A superfood smoothie is highly digestible, plant-based liquid nutrition with balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, fats, and the full spectrum of essential nutrients. The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are efficiently delivered into the bloodstream to boost performance, energy, mental clarity, and recovery.

Maintain that momentum by avoiding junk fuel and eating quality foods including “superfast” (almonds, coconut, chia seeds or macadamia nuts) during a round. It is a well-known fact in athletics that digestion competes with performance, so consider having a superfood smoothie instead of a burger or sandwich at the turn.

FEATURED CLUB OF THE MONTH: TAYLORMADE STEALTH 2

Any golfer in the market for a driver that offers a consistent blend of distance and forgiveness will be interested in what TaylorMade has to offer this season. The driver that likely has the broadest appeal in the second-generation Stealth line-up for 2023 is the standard TaylorMade Stealth 2 model.

Looking at the three new models, which include the TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus driver and TaylorMade Stealth 2 HD driver, there are some refinements to the original technology that promise to move the performance onward.

TaylorMade has done a great job of making the Stealth 2 a bit more user-friendly behind the ball. The red on the face is brighter, which is a smart move, as it makes the loft on the club a little clearer to see. The glossy black crown also helps it look a bit more generous at address. The red ring round the back of the head, highlights the Carbon Reinforced Composite Ring technology.

Combined with the refined aesthetics, I think this is a driver that builds on the previous generation and will have a broad appeal among golfers of different handicaps.

CONSIDER THIS FOR THE COURT: “TOSS FOR SUCCESS” BY GREG HEARTT

This month we will discuss the importance of our toss height and location for a more consistent serve. The 3 most important factors will be 1) Height, 2) Location, 3) Body Position. The height of your toss needs to exceed your own racquet when raised with full extension above your head. If you can get comfortable to toss about half a racquet higher than your own that is ideal. Location of your toss is important and think of a clock for our right-handed players and try tossing between 12 and 1 o’clock for your first serve and between 11 and 12 o’clock on your second serve. Body position is key in we want to have full extension and excellent posture throughout your serve. Focus on keeping your non-dominant hand up for as long as possible to keep this good posture on serve. With these 3 tips on the serve keep practicing allocating more repetitions for a higher consistency on serve. Till next time!
