Mindful Taste and Learn

Held throughout the world, Burns Night honors the iconic Scottish poet Robert Burns, who wrote the New Year’s Eve anthem Auld Lang Syne. Many Scots host a Burns supper on January 25, the poet’s birthday, although they can be held throughout the year.

Come and enjoy a hearty feast, Burns’ poems, music and tributes to Scotland’s national bard.

Garden Spot Village 1/2 Marathon, 10K & Kids Fun Run

This year’s Garden Spot Village 1/2 Marathon & 10K will take place on Saturday, March 25 at 8am. A Kids Fun Run will take place on Friday, March 24 at 6pm.

This is a run for everyone whether you are a beginner, experienced, leisure or competitive runner. Friends, family, and spectators can watch the run take place easily. Don’t miss this exciting time!

Garden Spot Village Continuing Education JANUARY FOCUS: Quest for Learning

The soul of Quest continues to be the hundreds of participants who continually demonstrate that it is never too late to learn.

Garden Spot Village is pleased to sponsor Quest for Learning. Our sponsorship allows us to provide free educational opportunities to residents. Quest for Learning’s winter session will include a six-week course entitled Architecture, Lancaster in Style, hosted by Gregory Scott. This program can be viewed on Tuesday mornings at 9:30am starting January 3 and running through February 7, in the Theater.

About the course: Lancaster City is known as the Red Rose City. It is also the county seat and one of the oldest inland cities in the United States. But, did you know that Lancaster is home to architectural wonders and styles including the Germanic Federal, Classical Revival, Edwardian Eclectic, Dutch Colonial, English Cottage and French Eclectic styles? Learn more about Lancaster’s architecture during this six-week course.

About the host: Gregg is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, partner emeritus at RLPS Architects, columnist for LNP, and twice recipient of the Smedley Award from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.

About the organization: Quest for Learning is a nonprofit education-focused organization that works to plan and conduct cultural and educational programs for retired persons living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. For the past 47 years, a team of volunteers has been coordinating seasonal seminars and workshops. Initially an outreach of the churches of Lancaster, Quest became it’s own non-profit entity in 1999. Prior to 2020, all of the workshops were hosted at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, where up to 500 people attended the events. In 2020, the sessions were moved to virtual, allowing even more people to attend.

FEBRUARY WELSH MOUNTAIN SERIES

Plan to join us for a series of events in February which will focus on racial/economic dynamics connected with the nearby Welsh Mountain Community.

FEBRUARY 13 – Personalities and Perspectives, 7pm, Chapel Don Horning from the New Holland Historical Society will moderate with storytelling by various persons.

FEBRUARY 20 – Religious History and Mission on Welsh Mountain, 7pm, Chapel Ken Sensenig will present stories and historical research.

STORY SHACK UPDATE

Pastoral Services and the Art Guild/Life Enrichment are collaborating to bring the Story Shacks out of their winter hibernation for a mid-winter appearance. You will find them on January 28 as part of the Inspire your Heart with Art Day. Residents will be invited to add creative touches on one or more of the six mini-libraries that will again be seen around campus during the summer months. Our theme for 2023 will be “Indigenous Peoples of North America.” Donations and loans of all genres, on that theme, will be accepted starting now. You may leave them with the chaplains. Please indicate if it is a book you want returned. We’ll do our best! The Story are an ongoing initiative of the Racial Literacy Team.

Thanks to over 13,000 groups, the Souper Bowl of Caring is empowering the entire country to fight hunger in communities across America. With your help, we can reduce hunger right here in our very own community of New Holland. Join us as we collect cans of soup and boxes of crackers, January 16 through February 5.

Cans of soup (any size) and unopened boxes of crackers may be placed in the collection barrel in the Apartment Suites Lobby. Please be mindful of expiration dates when donating food items. Thank you!

Collected items will be delivered to the New Holland Food Pantry to be distributed to local families as needs arise.

• The names of the groups gathering on a regular basis for support, education and relationship have been changed to reflect the value of friends serving each other in community. Whether the journey is Parkinson’s disease, cognitive changes, providing care for a loved one, or any other concern, we are stronger together.

• Adjustments have been made to the frequency of meetings for some of the groups.

• Meeting dates and topics will again be published in local papers. Do you have a friend who would benefit from one of our micro-communities of support? Please extend a warm GSC invitation to them.

START 2023 OFF WELL BY MAKING SURE IMPORTANT PERSONAL INFORMATION IS UP-TO-DATE

• EMERGENCY SHEETS. Take a moment to review the information on your Emergency sheet. You will find copies in a plastic pouch located in the medicine cabinet of your master bathroom. Make any necessary changes on one of the sheets and forward to the Social Services team. We will update your information and provide three revised copies via campus mail. Keeping information current will help you get the best care possible in an emergency situation.

• NEW INSURANCE CARDS. Did you change insurance plans during Medicare Open Enrollment? Please either bring or provide a copy of any NEW Medicare supplemental or Advantage plan insurance cards to the social service office to be scanned. We do not need Medicare Part D cards.

10 WINTER WELLNESS TIPS

1. TAKE A WALK , maybe only five minutes, but get up and get walking.

2. BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND ; give yourself a compliment every morning.

3. WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT and make you feel good.

4. PLAY, MOVE, (EXERCISE) just 5 to 10 minutes a few times a day (during commercials sneak in some exercise).

5. DRINK WATER. Since you tend to get dehydrated during the winter months, you experience chapped lips & dry skin. Try to drink just one more glass of water a day with a goal of 3-5 8-ounce glasses a day.

6. LEARN SOMETHING NEW; a new language, how to knit etc. Always be reading, watching and experimenting.

7. GIVE YOURSELF A STAR when you reach a goal, try something new, feel great, look great, have fun or have a good day.

8. STAND AND SIT UP STRAIGHT; it’s great for your abs and your confidence.

9. MAKE A WISH LIST, not resolutions for the upcoming year. Try to make a small change every week to make your wishes come true.

10. SMILE , even when you don’t feel like it. It will improve your spirits.
