Here’s to a sustainable 2020 for the UK garden centre industry Sustainability…the word is going to be on everyone’s lips in 2020. Whether you’re a producer, supplier or consumer, you will be focusing more and more on ensuring that what you make, buy and sell and the way in which you do it is helping to meet zero carbon goals as we tackle the climate emergency and avert environmental catastrophe. This applies, of course, across all industries and consumer categories but is acutely relevant to the garden industry. By continuing to develop impressive green credentials, the industry has a key role to play as a major influencer of sustainability trends and a leading exemplar of environmental best practice. The industry’s core product – plants – enables us to tell a story that embraces most of the central issues…trees that absorb CO2 and capture carbon, lawns that supply oxygen, soils that sustain microbiodiversity, growing media that re-purpose waste products, seasonal home-grown produce that reduces air miles, plantings that attract pollinators…there is hardly an aspect of horticulture and gardening that does not contribute to the long-term solutions we seek. Beyond plants, the products that will excite garden centre customers the most will soon be those that can demonstrate that their production has caused little or no

damage to the environment. The industry’s commitment to largely eliminate the black plant pots currently so problematical to recycle in the UK suggests an appetite for strategic action. Alternatives to traditional materials – bamboo textiles and recycled rubber tyres as replacements for plastic, for example – are finding their way into awardwinning home and garden products. But it’s not just about the product; ethics are part of the picture, too, so proof that rock-bottom prices have not been achieved by virtue of modern slavery in the world’s poorest communities will be important to increasingly enlightened consumers. GTN’s Sustainability Directory is a response to many requests from garden centres for a guide to manufacturers and suppliers whose products and services promise a more sustainable future. We hope you find it of value and look forward to hearing how you have used it to ‘green’-up your own story.

GARDEN CENTRE SUSTAINABILITY
The small centre making big strides in Sustainability Garden Centre Overstrand is a family-owned business near Cromer in Norfolk that is making big strides in the sustainability stakes. Here, general manager Sam Lowe explains some of the eco-initiatives he and his team are using. Over the past few months we have really seen a huge reduction in the level of our general waste. We have gone from having four 1,100 litre bins per week emptied to just one per week, and this huge transformation has been instantly noticeable within our company. We have managed to reduce what goes to landfill with a few minor tweaks, and yes I admit that at first it seemed alien, but once our staff could see the instant changes it became a normal working practice almost overnight. So how did we change our practices? Composts that we sell within the garden centre are from Growmore. We are happy to endorse that all their plastic waste can go into the customers’ domestic recycling bins. In addition, all the plastic wrap is coloured rather than the standard black plastic – this makes up some of our plastic waste which is uplifted. We now stock their full range, including a completely organic compost that is not only peat free but made from mushroom waste. Our garden centre green waste, along with tea leaves, salad and vegetable peelings from the tea-room, are all composted on

site. We also promote the upcycling of tea leaves with our shop customers as a natural soil conditioner, and are happy to give these away to customers for a charitable donation. All generated plastic waste is uplifted by Copdock Mills, which is then sent for recycling. We do not use any bin liners – instead we use the plastic bags that are generated from us decanting bird food that we weigh up for our own branded bird care lines. These are then in turn re-used and included within the uplifted plastic. All used plant pots are donated to local schools and scout groups. Plant trays are either donated to customers or returned to plant wholesalers. All cardboard waste is donated to our

local scout group, who receive money from this. All glass waste is disposed of within the village bottle bin – again money is received from this collection, which helps fund village schemes. Our tea-room ‘The Potting Shed’ promotes the use of compostable takeaway cups, lids, stirrers and napkins, and our soft drinks are in glass bottles. We have also taken measures to ensure all biscuits and café condiments are not packaged in single use plastics. We hope to develop and expand our range of organic and natural plant feeds and pest treatment lines. We are also planning to have a complete section promoting plastic free garden and home sundries, natural and locally sourced handmade soaps and cleaning products. We host various seasonal food and craft markets, promoting locally made crafts, treats and gifts, and ensure that at each event we promote a local charity that is at the heart of our local community. Sustainable Cordless Power from Greenworks Did you know there are more people alive today in the world than have ever lived? With the world’s population growing at such a rate and the available resources including fossil fuels dwindling in supply, it will only be a matter of time before our precious commodities will be harder to extract to support increasing demand. The need for all of us to become more focused on living cleaner, more sustainable lifestyles is already upon us, with manufacturers across all industries looking to develop environmentally friendly products, including a major shift from fuel to battery technology. There is a growing trend to pursue renewable energy in many parts of the World. Within the next 10 years more than 19% of all electricity and up to 30% by 2050 will come from wind farms avoiding 3 billion tons of CO2 according to Ecowatch. In the US, Solar generation currently is accountable for over 11% of the total renewable generated power and is expected to climb to 48% by 2050 according to the Centre for Climate and energy solutions. With so much focus on looking for cleaner more sustainable renewable energy, the future will be battery driven. Globe Tools are the world’s largest cordless garden machinery manufacturer currently producing over 1.2m units per month and growing. The founder and visionary of this company, Yin Chen,
(inset) turned his vision in 2002 from a small workshop into a full scale cuttingedge vertically integrated manufacturing operation across 3 continents to support the transition from petrol-powered outdoor equipment to ones which run purely on battery power. Today the Greenworks cordless brand, produced by Globe, provides its customers all over the world with a full compliment of garden and power tool equipment run solely on battery power. Greenworks identified the need to provide different voltage platforms to address the demands of different customer groups whether they are beginners and small garden owners, practical optimizers for those who aspire to maintain a perfect garden and performers or semi professionals for the serious heavy users. Greenworks strive to produce products which deliver strong performance and reliability, at affordable prices that provides a cleaner, quieter, more convenient hasslefree solution and more importantly are fuel or cable free. One charge of a 40v Greenworks 2ahr battery costs in the region of 7p (depending on your energy provider) and can deliver up to 45 minutes of continuous usage, more than enough to cut most average sized British lawns. Not only is there no need to take unnecessary trips to the local petrol station but cordless

Recycling Plant Pots At the Cultivating Retail Conference last November, Stuart Foster, CEO of RECOUP gave a presentation about plastic recycling with particular reference to the recycling of plant pots.
“Over the last two years there has been a fundamental shift in attitude towards improved long-term use of plastic resources and demands to improve recycling rates.” 8
GTN’s Sustainability Directory 2020
RECOUP is the UK’s leading authority on plastics waste and resource management, providing expertise and guidance to a wide range of organisations and industries. They are working closely with the garden sector to help improve recyclability and sustainability within the industry. Over the last two years there has been a fundamental shift in attitude towards improved long-term use of plastic resources and demands to improve recycling rates. Many companies across the country are beginning to examine the environmental impact of the materials they use to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. This has seen the introduction of many new materials and an increased demand for products to be easier to recycle. In 2019, RECOUP and the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) worked together to research how plastic is used and recycled within UK horticulture. With 25 million gardeners across the UK, it is important that the industry can show they are environmentally conscious. Together growers, garden centres, manufacturers and landscapers contribute £24bn to the British economy each year – to put this in context, this is larger than the British Aerospace industry. RECOUP dedicated a whole session to how plastics are used in Horticulture and Farming at their Annual Conference 2019 to gather more information. The conference hosts approximately 500 people from across the whole plastics resource and packaging value chain, who meet to discuss how recycling and sustainability can be further developed whilst products remain cost-effective. Following research, RECOUP and the HTA identified changes that could increase the amount of material that can be recycled allowing the ‘circular economy’ to build. A major change that came from this research is the move away from the traditional black plant pot. Product tests by RECOUP showed black plastic plant pots cannot be sorted and processed correctly at recycling facilities. Black plastic packaging is typically coloured using carbon black pigments, these pigments absorb the infra-red light used to identify the different plastics at sorting facilities. This results in the black plastic plant pots being undetected and
FEATURE being classified as waste rather than being recycled. The research undertaken by RECOUP, with the support of their members, proved that removing the carbon black pigment from plant pots, allowed pots of various colours to be identified at the sorting facility and successfully sorted for recycling. As a direct result of this testing and research, taupe coloured pots have now been adopted as the new industry standard. They have been successfully tested by RECOUP, who confirm that they can be detected and processed for further recycling. RECOUP and the HTA continue to work together to develop and implement systems to allow plant pots to easily be recycled. Many garden centres are now offering plant pot collection schemes, so even if a Local Authority is unable to collect the pots as part of the regular collections, there are places where gardeners can recycle their pots. The hope is that more Local Authorities will start to collect pots in the future. Stuart Foster, Chief Executive Officer RECOUP said: “RECOUP have 30 years’ experience of working across the whole plastics resource and packaging industry and we are now being approached by industries, such as the garden sector, keen to explore how they can help create a fully circular and resource efficient economy, underpinned by effective producer and consumer responsibility. “The best approach to achieving a responsible plastics future is still to be agreed and RECOUP are at the forefront of having conversations and undertaking research to provide evidence to support claims being made. It is important to evaluate what is seen as ‘unnecessary use’, what are the environmental implications of using alternative materials, and assessing the most effective recycling systems for all products including plastics.”
RECOUP have produced a free report, titled ‘Recyclability by Design Guidance for Plastic Plant Pots, supported by the HTA, which provides additional evidence and information. You can download this for free from RECOUP.org

“Rushing into things is dangerous. But doing nothing is more dangerous.” So says Adam Wigglesworth of Aylett Nurseries in St Albans. “It’s a moving target, this sustainability thing but customers expect it. Financially, it makes sense. It works, recycling, waste reduction. Those things actually make efficiencies and even in situations where things are slightly more expensive actually, customers are normally happy to pay the difference, or you have to absorb a bit of it.” Aylett Nurseries have been on the sustainability journey now for many years and are main sponsors of the annual St Albans Sustainability Week. “I’ve been banging on about it for a while but if you only did one thing it would be by yourself a baler and bale your plastic, bale your cardboard and bale your shrink and take it out of your waste stream.” “When we show our customers what we do (they have massive displays of their waste management and sustainable products etc in store during St Albans Sustainability Week and at other times) they all say, ‘I didn’t realize you were doing so much.’ That’s why we must tell people about it.” Adam’s staff at Aylett Nurseries play a big part in their sustainability journey. “How many people work in garden centres who aren’t enthusiastic about the environment? This is not a difficult sell. When we started on the sustainability kick, we had a management meeting: I said there are two ways to look at this, there are those of you who are the eco warriors, you’re going to love this and then there are those of you who aren’t and you’re interested in your pay packet. All of you are going to benefit from this because we’re going to reduce the amount we send to landfill, we’re going to reduce our costs. We’re going to sell our cardboard and our plastic, we’re going to

reduce the waste bill. So everyone succeeds and customers love it.” “That’s why I like being in this industry was their reaction. That doesn’t mean we’re green. It doesn’t mean we don’t have plastic pots. It doesn’t mean we don’t use heating but we certainly need to adapt and change and keep moving forward. We’ve got to do our best. I feel very, very passionately about it. Customers are not asking us to
completely rip up our business model and change it. There’s a huge following, particularly in St Albans from customers to know what we’re doing. And when we tell them what we’re doing it is such a positive, but we’re not doing nearly enough.” I suspect loads of people have done LED lights. I’ve changed every single light in the garden centre. It cost £60k with a very helpful carbon trust grant of 10%. I’m saving just over 20 percent a year on my energy bill so the payback for me is three years. They’ve got a warranty of five years and over their lifetime that’s 30 tons of carbon we’ve saved just by putting in LED lights.” Aylett Nurseries have also been involved in wider sustainability initiatives. “A few years ago we signed up to the Refill App (www.refill.org.uk) for free water bottle re-fills and currently we get at least a

dozen people a day calling in for free water. What’s not to like about that!” “At the end of the day you’ve got to do this for the right reason. And the right reason is for the environment. Everything else is a benefit. If you’re only doing this to be seen to be green that’s the wrong reason.

What is Sustainability? Dr David Bek is a Reader in Sustainable Economies based at the Research Centre for Business in Society at Coventry University. Here he explains just why sustainability is so high on the agenda at the moment and talks about the issues and opportunities for garden centres that lie ahead.
Sustainability is a buzzword which has become highly influential in recent years and is widely used in all sorts of contexts. But it’s a slippery idea, which means different things to different people. I will start with some context which explains why sustainability has become a critically important idea. Many in the scientific community consider that we are living in a geological epoch which can be called the Anthropocene, meaning a time when human activity is having profound impacts upon Earth’s geology and ecosystems. There are significant upward trends from the 1940s onwards for increases in economic activity such as GDP growth, population growth, increases in natural resource use and increases in things like carbon dioxide emissions, ozone depletion, species loss, forests loss, and so forth. The inference being that the drive for growth is associated with significant and ultimately damaging environmental impacts. The planet is warming. We are on course for a 1.5 degree rise in global temperature,
12
probably much higher if there are not substantial changes in human behaviour and higher average temperatures means changes in weather patterns with potentially catastrophic impacts. Other dimensions of the Anthropocene include biodiversity loss and depletion and pollution of soil, water and air. Environmental awareness moved into the mainstream at the back end of the 1960s and early 1970s. Photos from space provided a sense of the finiteness of the earth and its resources within an infinite universe. It was in the 1980s that sustainability came to the forefront of debates. The UN published a report entitled Our Common Future, which contained a definition of sustainability that continues to be widely accepted. ‘Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’ The current state of the art thinking focuses upon the three P’s people, planet and profit. Any activity needs to lie at the intersection of these three elements in
GTN’s Sustainability Directory 2020
“We could all do little things to contribute to a sustainable future and the horticultural industry is exceptionally well placed to tackle the big stuff and to help individuals do their bit.”
order to be truly sustainable. Ultimately, if the planet and its resources are not respected, then there will be not much of a future for people or profit. In the context of horticulture, we need to think about the pathways toward sustainability. There needs to be a focus upon reducing or even eradicating negative carbon, water and biodiversity footprints. And whilst the bigger picture seems daunting. We need to remember that every individual action does matter. We could all do little things to contribute to a sustainable future and the horticultural industry is exceptionally well placed to tackle the big stuff and to help individuals do their bit. Peat is quite controversial because whilst peat is a wonderful medium for growing products the problem is that peat is taken out of the natural environment. It’s taken from peat bogs that have taken thousands of years typically to develop into their particular state. It’s not just the changes in the ecosystems in those places. Just by removing that peat, you are releasing greenhouse gases which will go straight off into the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. So even if you’re using that peat in gardens, you’ve
FEATURE already got that particular problem. I think the question is: are there viable alternatives? Is peat the only way of actually growing great garden products? Thanks to The TV program Blue Planet 2, plastics have become something of a pariah in the last year or so and this is an issue that afflicts horticulture as much as any other industry. If you look at the data 300 to 400 million plant pots every year are discarded into landfill or into incineration, which is a major issue for the industry because the problem with the black plant pot is that it’s difficult to recycle owing to the pigmentation that’s in it. So it just gets discarded with the systems we have in the UK currently. It’s really good to see that’s happening with changes of colour for plant pots but we do need joined up systems in the industry, probably needing to actually lobby local authorities and central government to make our recycling systems much more consistent so that we don’t have this totally unacceptable problem of plastic from a particular industry ending up contributing to climate change and pollution. When it comes to the positive things to do with sustainability and horticulture trees and shrubs inherent property is the ability to sequester carbon. And this is why we’ve got a very, very positive story to tell. Research conducted at a university in the United States has shown that a single red maple tree in its lifetime can sequester 664 kilograms of carbon, which is a significant offset against any other issues created in its production. And even if you think about the humble viburnum shrub when it’s grown to maturity in its lifetime, it can sequester up to 10 kilograms of carbon. So if we think about the cumulative effects of long term planting, actually there’s some really good story to tell here. This should be very much part of the sustainability journey of the industry to be encouraging much more long-term planting and to be aware of those kinds of positive impacts that the industry can create. The key thing is that people plant things and leave it. Don’t just rip it out of the ground after two or three years because fashion has changed. If you want to do something positive for sustainability, this is what you should do as longterm planting also aids biodiversity developments. You’re going to get more insects and more forms of wildlife developing in that particular area, which again, is a positive for the environment and it’s positive for the planet as a whole.
Peat Free Compost becomes a best-seller Westland’s New Horizon Peat Free Compost became a bestselling growing media line this Autumn, according to the weekly epos analysis for GTN Bestsellers. During October and November 2019 Westland New Horizon All Plant Compost 60 litres featured in the top 5 bestselling growing media lines and even reached as high as the No 2 bestselling line for one week in October, outselling many peat based products. GTN Bestsellers analyst, Trevor Pfeifer, sees this as a significant move for the adoption of peat free growing media.
In previous years the only time peat free composts have featured in the GTN Top 50 have been in the high spring weeks when less keen gardeners come into the buying pool. These sales during October and November 2019 are to keen gardeners and for them to be choosing a peat free option is good news for all. When they start telling other gardeners about their success and their contribution towards sustainability there is real potential for a snowball effect and much higher sales of peat free composts during 2020.

There’s also an orange juice vending machine, bring your own bottle of course, a peanut butter making machine and a wonderful gravity bin system for dispensing just the right amount of pulses, herbs, dried fruits etc. For the sticky or oily lines in the gravity bins there are clear containers made from plants, they look like plastic and apart from that all other bags are paper. One customer told us “My 14-year-old son came with me before Christmas and was so impressed that there were no plastic bags he’s told me I should come and get all of my shopping here.” With meat sold in the butchers coming from Nigels son’s herds of cattle and as much local produce stocked as possible this really is an example of how appealing sustainable food retailing is to customers. And at the tills there is a ready supply of boxes to pack shopping into. “They are so popular with customers,” said Nigel, “we’d be crazy not to offer them instead of bags.”

In addition to the sustainable nature of the products, much of the manufacturing is done by workers (often young mothers) in their own homes, a system which allows them to earn a living whilst bringing up their children. James Hoad, Apta director, says “the Green Haus pots were extremely popular when we launched them at Glee in September and we’ll be making a lot of deliveries in 2020. Customers loved the story behind the products, but importantly they are also excellent designs in commercial shapes and sizes, on-trend colourways, and well-priced. They’re also lightweight and nonfragile, so are very simple to store and display. Easy to see why they’ve been so popular!” To learn more about the Green Haus range please visit apta.co.uk, or email sales@apta.co.uk.

Sustainability is a topic we can’t deny anymore. Especially since we are in the garden branch where we have a close connection with nature. We started by creating recyclable planters though a sustainable process and now we are expanding the collection with a biodiversity range (rain Barrels, bee hotels, bird houses). However, that is not enough. Eventually we would like to produce 100% biobased planters only, made from sugarcane. We are able to produce these, but the consumer is not ready yet. Therefore it is time for us to increase awareness, so we can work on a better and a sustainable future for ourselves and next generations. We started by creating recyclable planters though a sustainable process and we are expanding the collection with a biodiversity range. However, that is not enough. It’s time to increase awareness and work on a sustainable future. www.capi-europe.com
