Welcome To Spring in Boise County,

the gateway to an authentic Central Idaho Mountains adventure. The grass is greening up and beckoning the wildlife from the surrounding mountains. A true delight for those that venture along the roads, trails and waterways within the County.

WILDLIFE VIEWING Wildlife is abundant for viewing this time of year. Deer and elk will remain in the area into April when grasses begin growing and will begin migrating back to higher elevations as the snowline recedes. Late afternoon hours are best times for visitors to view wildlife; however, many will be visible at any hour. Male (buck) deer will have shed their antlers by this time of year. Male (bull) elk may still have their antlers, as they generally lose them in late March.

Eagles may also be spotted by wildlife enthusiasts. According to a survey by the Census Bureau for the Fish and wildlife Service, more than 51 million Americans are bird watchers. The pastime is considered one of the fastest growing hobbies in the country. The Bald Eagle population in the area is centered along the Payette River system where they feed on whitefish in the river and on winter kill big game animals.

By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

HOT SPRINGS

Early spring is the perfect time to enjoy one of several unimproved hot springs that dot the area. The local merchants, USFS Ranger Stations, and the local Chamber of Commerces can provide more information. Additionally, there are several improved resort hot springs facilities, including Terrace Lakes, Silver Creek Plunge, and The Springs at Idaho City.

Area Attractions Idaho City is one famous mining camp that has refused to die and instead has pros-

pered into the thriving community that it is today. During its early years it was knows Bannock City or West Bannock to differentiate between Bannock, Montana, since at that time both towns were in Idaho Territory. In 1863, Idaho City had a propulation of six thousand and was being seriously considered for the territorial capital. It lost out, however, and in 1864 the territorial capital was moved to Boise City from Lewiston. Idaho City today thrives on a booming tourist industry, and is home to the county seat of Boise County.

Area Attractions Plan ahead to reserve Forest Service facilities near Idaho City! Barber Flat Cabin The Barber Flat Cabin site was established for administrative use by the Forest Service in 1923, and was used prior to that by the Barber Lumber Company. At the time, the Forest Service used a cabin already on-site as a guard station and then built a new one in 1927. The current cabin and outbuildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, and the cabin today looks much as it did back then. Guests can drive to Barber Flat Cabin in twowheel drive passenger cars or trucks, although the roads may occasionally be rough. The cabin provides most of the conveniences needed for a comfortable stay.

Barber Flat Cabin is situated near the North Fork Boise River among towering Ponderosa pines at an elevation of about 4,300 feet.

Fees: Usage: Closest Towns: Water: Other Information: Several multi-use trails run east and west from the cabin. Hikers and mountain bikers can access the Barber Flat Trailhead nearby, and the Hungarian/Sunset Trail is located just across the road about 200 yards north of the cabin. Other trails in the area include the Beaver Creek/Grand Mountain Trail and the Short Creek Trail, which is known as a haven for nesting ospreys. The river offers great rainbow trout fishing and many swimming holes.

Daily Rate: $40.00 Medium Idaho City Drinking Water Facilities: The cabin can sleep six people on two bunkbeds and a futon, and mattresses are provided. The kitchen is equipped with a table and chairs, cookware, dishes, utensils, a propane stove, refrigerator and sink with hot water. The bathroom has a sink, bathtub and flush toilet. A wood stove is provided for heat and firewood may be gathered from the surrounding forest. A picnic table and a campfire ring with benches are located outside. Trash and recycle bins are behind the cabin. The cabin has no electricity. Bedding, pillows and towels are not provided. Guests should use the broom and dustpan provided to tidy up the cabin before leaving.

Area Attractions Horseshoe Bend is the largest city in rural Boise County, with a population of 707.

It is named for its location at the horseshoeshaped U-turn of the Payette River, whose flow direction changes from south to north before heading west to the Black Canyon Reservoir. Black Canyon, only minutes away from town, offers a wide array of water sports and picnicking opportunities. Horseshoe Bend’s current culture is a blend of ranching and is a growing bedroom community for Boise. Its annual events include a banjo festival in late May, the national senior pro rodeo in June, and a fall festival in October.

Area Attractions HOT SPRINGS - LOWMAN Early spring is a great time to try out some of the natural hot springs within the Lowman area, located on Hwy 21 -- an easy and scenic drive from the Treasure Valley.

K

irkham Hot Springs, located near the Boise National Forest campground of the same name, features somewhat shallow rock pools (unimproved) with sand/rock bottoms next to the river. The multiple hot waterfalls are quite a sight! Both the pools and hot waterfalls can be seen from a large pullout off highway 21 on the west side of the campground. Spring soaking can help one avoid the full-house use of the summer and winter seasons.

Kirkham additionally serves as an interpretive site for geothermal activity. There is a trail that winds through the seeps and sources which continuously provide the hot springs pools with fresh mineral water. There are signs along the way that describe the hot springs and area history.

B

onneville Hot Springs, is a .25 mile hike and is accessible from the campground of the same name located just off highway 21 north of Lowman. Bonneville features user built rock pools with sand/silt bottoms and a private soak shack that houses a bathtub.

Area Attractions Garden Valley • Crouch The community is surrounded in all directions by mountain peaks -- some over 7,000 feet. Two river systems carve valleys covered in the lush green of early spring along with wildlife, stock and horses. In 1934 a new post office established the identity of Crouch, now one of the commercial districts for Garden Valley. The town was named after Billy Crouch, a miner who homesteaded near the confluence of the Middle and South Fork Rivers. In the 1920s, Crouch donated property for a new community hall in Garden Valley. Population -- 2,000 + ??? Elevation -- 3,200 ft.

Area Attractions HOT SPRINGS - GARDEN VALLEY ANY SEASON of the year is a great time to try out some of the natural hot springs within the Garden Valley Area. PINE FLATS: On the South Fork of the Payette River six miles west of the Lowman Ranger Station on the Banks-Lowman Road. The trailhead takes off from the campground and follows the river for approximately 1/4 mile. Hot spring sits 30 feet above the river bed. HOT SPRINGS CAMPGROUND: On the South Fork of the Payette River across the road from Hot Springs Campground, 1 mile east of the Garden Valley Guard Station. ROCKY CANYON: 12-1/2 miles northeast of Crouch on Forest Road 698, the hot springs is reached by fording the Middle Fork of the Payette River.

FIRE CREW: Take the left fork at the junction at Trail Creek Campground on Forest Road 698, travel 1/3 mile to a spur road to the left that ends at the river. THe hot springs lie next to the river north of a dispersed camping area. BOILING SPRINGS: Take Forest Road 698, travel 23 miles north to the Middle Fork trailhead just north of Boiling Springs Campground. Just 1/4 mile north, the springs are located near Boiling Springs Cabin.

MOON DIPPER AND PINE BURL HOT SPRINGS: At the end of Forest Road 698, take the Middle Fork Trail approximately 2 miles to Moon Dipper. Pine Burl lies just beyond.

Facilities provided include beds (1 double and 3 single), a couch, table and chairs, propane cook range, refrigerator, outdoor toilet, and wood stove. Bring your own bedding, utensils, light, axe and water. As the name implies, there are several hot springs in the area, one at the site, and three more just north, along the river. The Middle Fork Trail, from the campground, leads to all of these, plus a fifth one about 8 miles north.
