Spring Returns to the Mountains of Boise County
May-June 2015 Issue Find The Guide Online at: www.theboisecountyguide.com
Welcome
To Spring in Boise County, Idaho, the gateway to an authentic Central Idaho Mountains adventure. Boise County is located just one hour north of Idaho’s capital city, Boise. The area is the host and backyard playground to many from the “city of trees.” The spring time recreational opportunities are endless: rafting, hiking, boating, horseback or ATV riding, camping, wildlife viewing, touring historical sites…..
Only One Hour From Boise! The Miners’ Exchange Building, established as a successful watering hole in 1865, is one of a half-dozen red brick structures in Idaho City built during the city’s first decade. Important as part of a homogenous historic district as well as an example of a territorial building, the Miners’ Exchange is one of the most successful commercial restorations in Idaho, and is now home to Boise County offices.
SCENIC LOOP
By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

Area Attractions
Boise County was established on February 4, 1864, with its county seat at Idaho
City. It was named for the Boise River, which was named by French-Canadian explorers and trappers for the great variety of trees growing along its banks in the lower desert valley. The Boise Basin, in which Idaho City lies, was one of the richest gold mining districts in the nation. Gold was discovered in 1862 and more of it was pulled from present-day Boise County than from the entire state of Alaska. At its peak in the mid-1860s, Idaho City was the largest city in the Northwest, and it was this rapid population influx that lead to the establishment of the Idaho Territory in 1863. The lower elevation communities of Horseshoe Bend (Payette River) and Boise (Boise River) were staging areas for the Boise Basin mines. When Ada County was partitioned from mountainous Boise County in December 1864 it included the present-day counties of the Treasure Valley: Canyon, Payette, and Gem (southern).
The county’s two primary routes are scenic byways. For the majority of their
length in the county, both are two-lane undivided highways. The Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway on State Highway 21 climbs northeast from Boise to Idaho City and Lowman, and ends at Stanley in Custer County, at the junction with State Highway 75. The Payette River Scenic Byway on State Highway 55 is a designated national scenic byway. It heads north from Eagle to Horseshoe Bend and climbs the whitewater of the Payette River to Cascade and McCall in Valley County, and ends at New Meadows in Adams County, at the junction with U.S. Route 95. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,907 square miles, of which 1,899 square miles is land and 7.4 square miles (0.4%) is water. The highest point in the county is Thompson Peak at 10,751 feet, on its eastern border in the Sawtooth Wilderness. The county’s lowest point is on the Payette River, on its western border with Gem County, at approximately 2,500 feet. Boise County Guide -- May-June 2015 Issue -- 3

Area Attractions Just an hour drive from Boise, along scenic Highway 21, is the classic western town of Idaho City. This town was once the largest mining settlement in the Pacific Northwest. Today it serves as a recreational hub and a popular day trip for residents in the Boise metro area. Idaho City is also surrounded by the Boise National Forest, so it is near some of southwest Idaho’s best outdoor recreational opportunities including ATV riding, hiking, fishing, camping and Nordic skiing! Activities that draw visitors to this location include the public hot springs, car shows, local museums, and the annual Frontier Days.

Area Attractions In 1862, prospectors found gold in Boise Basin, located east of Horseshoe Bend on the other side of Boise Ridge.
Their discovery led to one of Idaho’s largest gold rushes. A year later, the basin’s population swelled to between twelve and fourteen thousand people. Horseshoe Bend was estab-

lished when miners headed for Boise Basin settled on the river to wait out the winter snows. For a short time, the town was known as Warrinersville, after a local sawmill operator. In 1867, the name was changed to Horseshoe Bend. That year, a Kentucky miner named Felix Harris built a toll road to Placerville. It was rumored that Harris sometimes collected $1,000 a day in toll fees paid with gold. After the gold rush subsided, Horseshoe Bend developed into a prosperous ranching and logging community.
Area Attractions Horseshoe Bend is the largest city in rural Boise County, in the southwest-
ern part of Idaho. Its population of 707 at the 2010 census was the largest in the county, though down from 770 in 2000.
The town is named for its location at the horseshoe-shaped U-turn of the Payette River, whose flow direction changes from south to north before heading west to the Black Canyon Reservoir.
The welcome sign sits prominently at the junction of Hwy 55 and Hwy 52, with the iconic rock “H” overlooking the town on the hills in the background.
The Mill Pond sits
just north of Horseshoe Bend on the east side of the road before the north bridge. It is consistently stocked with fish - easy access -- a great place to take the kids fishing.
Horseshoe Bend’s current culture is a blend of ranching and a growing bedroom community for Boise. Its annual events include a banjo festival in late May, the national senior pro rodeo in June, and a fall festival in October. A scenic railroad, the Thunder Mountain Line, is based in the city, following the tracks that were completed along the Payette River in 1913. Festivals and other events such as the annual Cruizin 55 Car Show mark the calendar throughout the spring and summer. West of Horseshoe Bend are Placerville, Centerville and Pioneerville, areas loaded with remnants from earlier mining days. Boise County Guide -- May-June 2015 Issue -- 7
Area Attractions Lowman is a small unincorporated rural census-designated place in Boise County nes-
tled along the banks of the South Fork of the Payette River in the central part of the state. As of the 2010 census, its population was 42.
The community is situated eighty miles from Boise at the junction of State Highway 21 and the Banks-Lowman Rd., also known as the “Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway. The Lowman School, a one room school house sits at the corner of this junction.

Trailhead located in campground. Hot springs sit on the river’s edge. There is a Parking Fee! BONNEVILLE HOT SPRINGS: Located on Warm Springs Creek, 18 miles east of the Lowman R.S. on Hwy 21. Trailhead is located in the campground. Hot springs are 1/4 mile hike away. Site includes one small bathhouse with an individual tub. There is a Parking Fee! SACAJAWEA HOT SPRINGS: On the South Fork of the Payette near Grandjean. 22 miles east of Lowman R.S. on Hwy 21, turn off to the right on a gravel road, #524 Grandjean Rd. Travel approximately 4.6 miles to the Wapiti Ck. junction and continue .6 miles beyond. Hot springs are on the right hand side of the road. Hot springs are flooded during spring runoff. Plan your visit at periods of lower water. SACAJAWEA HOT SPRINGS: A longer hike than others!
Located in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness NE of Lowman. Drive 35 miles from Lowman R.S. on Hwy 21. Turn west on Forest Road 082/579 -- signed for Boundary Creek, Bruce Meadows, Cascade. Go 8 miles to Marsh Creek Trail turnoff. Park at the Fir Creek Pack Bridge. The trailhead for the hot springs is across the bridge on the way to Marsh Creek Trail. First 1.5 miles is easy, then trail crosses large meadow and disappears into the woods. At this point, one must cross Bear Valley Creek. In the spring during snow melt and during the summer after intense thunderstorms, this crossing is potentially hazardous! Go 3.5 miles. Look for tree on left with “HS” blazed on it. Take path winding down slope to the chain of five pools dropping to the creek edge. Total hike is 7 miles round trip.

Area Attractions Garden Valley Area Hot Springs -- Middle Fork of the Payette River --
CAUTION -- Check on whether Middle Fork Road is open in EARLY SPRING before heading up to Boiling Springs Area! 1 • Rocky Canyon 12.5 miles from the intersection of Forest Road 698 (Middle Fork Rd.) and Hwy 17. Go 1.5 mi. past Hardscrabble Campground. Park in a pullout on your left. You’ll have to wade the river, which could be dangerous during high water. The spring emerges from the steep hillside near the mouth of Rocky Canyon. Bathers have chiseled out a family-size soaking pool well up the bank. A PVC pipe in the dam provides a great shower for the slightly cooler pool immediately below.
2 • Fire Crew
15 miles from the intersection of Forest Road 698 (Middle Fork Rd.) and Hwy 17. (2.5 miles past Rocky Canyon Hot Spring) to a junction at Trail Creek Campground. Take the left fork for .3 miles. Bear left on a rough spur ending at the river. A loop encircles an undeveloped camping area. The pools are out on a gravel bar to your right. The spring is on the river’s edge, but, on the near side. No river crossing necessary. Can get hot as the river drops -some adjusting may be necessary!

Miles
23 miles from the intersection of Forest Road 698 (Middle Fork Rd.) and Hwy 17, to the road-end campground and trailhead. Stroll .3 miles north on the trail to find the springs flowing down a bank beside a couple of cabins. The cabins, formerly a Forest Service guard station, are now rented to the public for recreational use. Please ask permission before entering and try to avoid the cabin area as much as possible. Steaming water emerges at 188 degrees from many fissures in a cliff just beyond the cabins, and a broad cascade streams down the hillside. One spring flows through a shallow soaking pool or two at the base. The water cools as it runs through a ditch across a wide meadow. A few rock-lined pools at the river’s edge are usually filled on weekends with kids from the nearby campground.
10 --Boise County Guide -- May-June 2015 Issue
Area Attractions 4 & 5 • Moondipper - Pine Burl
Take your choice of trails from Boiling Springs upriver. Two separate springs flow down the banks of a creek just above the river into a pair of scenic soakers spaced 50 yards apart along the tree-studded canyon. Both get swamped during high water, so fall is an ideal time go visit these spots. One trail, steep and slippery in spots, hugs the west side of the river all the way. This is the safer route during high water. The Middle Fork Trail is more direct, but you’ll have to ford several times in the 2-mile hike upstream. When you reach Dash Creek, the first side stream on the west side, you’ll find Moondipper 30 yards up the creek against a rocky bank. The large, sandy-bottomed pool can hold several happy soakers and offers a great view up the canyon. Pine Burl, a gem tucked out of sight a few bends up the creek, has a pool roughly 7 to 8 feet in diameter. The name, once inscribed on a small masonry dam at the downstream end, has eroded away, but the inspiration for it still sits up the hill on the north side. The spring perks up through the sandy bottom, and if the water gets too hot, you can shift the rocks at the other end to let creek water trickle in.
The pool at Pineburl Hot Spring.
6 • Groundhog
1.3 miles beyond Moondipper and Pine Burl, there is little foot traffic, and the way is pretty brushy. Watch for Ground Hog Creek on the west bank shortly before the 8th ford of the river. Right after this crossing, the river makes a horseshoe bend to the right. Cross the river one last time to find the springs in the center of the curve on the east bank. Pool gets little use, so be prepared to move some rocks!
Boiling Springs Hot Springs where the water cascades down the hillside, with the guard station in the background.
7 • Bull Creek Take Silver Creek Trail vs. Middle Fork. Drop down the far side of Silver Creek Summit into Bull Creek. Take Bull Creek Trail. Turn left and follow it 2.7 miles downstream above the north bank of Bull Creek. The trail drops steeply to a bridge over a small stream, then reaches another with no bridge. Look 30 feet uphill and climb up to reach the springs on a granite bluff overlooking the canyon. REMOTE and can get hot!

The Payette River is just an hour’s drive from Boise but it still manages to leave civilization far behind. Visitors float a clean mountain river with forested banks and hawks or osprey flying overhead, and different groups enjoy different stretches of the river system.
The South Fork of the Payette is an advanced whitewater run for one, two, or three days of excitement. Three-day trips start high in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, above the town of Lowman. After the Deadwood River adds its flow, the river begins to drop about 40 feet per mile with continuous steep rapids. This Canyon stretch is punctuated at its deepest point by a 40-foot waterfall.

The area has for many years been a secluded getaway spot for those wishing to flee suburbia for a more rural lifestyle. Travel to and from the city of Boise is now convenient enough for the wishes of many commuting residents. The Garden Valley area offers a diversity of pleasant lifestyle opportunities for those that don’t mind a little snow in winter! Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, rafting and kayaking are just a few of the rewards that await those looking for action.
