Area Attractions FAST FACTS....
The community is surrounded in all directions by mountain peaks -- some over 7,000 feet. Two river systems carve valleys covered in the lush green of summer growth along with wildlife, stock and horses. In 1934 a new post office established the identity of Crouch, now one of the commercial districts for Garden Valley. The town was named after Billy Crouch, a miner who homesteaded near the confluence of the Middle and South Fork Rivers. In the 1920s, Crouch donated property for a new community hall in Garden Valley. Population -- 2,000 + ??? Elevation -- 3,200 ft.

Area Attractions HOT SPRINGS Fall is a great time to try out some of the natural hot springs within the Garden Valley Area. PINE FLATS: On the South Fork of the Payette River six miles west of the Lowman Ranger Station on the Banks-Lowman Road. The trailhead takes off from the campground and follows the river for approximately 1/4 mile. Hot spring sits 30 feet above the river bed. HOT SPRINGS CAMPGROUND: On the South Fork of the Payette River across the road from Hot Springs Campground, 1 mile east of the Garden Valley Guard Station. ROCKY CANYON: 12-1/2 miles northeast of Crouch on Forest Road 698, the hot springs is reached by fording the Middle Fork of the Payette River. FIRE CREW: Take the left fork at the junction at Trail Creek Campground on Forest Road 698, travel 1/3 mile to a spur road to the left that ends at the river. THe hot springs lie next to the river north of a dispersed camping area. BOILING SPRINGS: Take Forest Road 698, travel 23 miles north to the Middle Fork trailhead just north of Boiling Springs Campground. Just 1/4 mile north, the springs are located near Boiling Springs Cabin.

Area Attractions/History EARLY TRANSPORTATION in and Around Garden Valley The fur trappers and traders who crisscrossed the area of the Boise National Forest after 1811 may have followed Indian trails and made new ones as well. When gold was discovered, there was a flurry of attempts to find the easiest and fastest routes into the new diggings. Development of commercial transportation in the Boise National Forest area may have begun w/ Packer John Welch, who fitted out a pack train in Lewiston in the fall of 1862 and started out w/ a large supply of merchandise for the Boise Basin. Between the sites of Meadows and McCall, his pack train was stalled by the first snowstorm of the season. He and his men built a log cabin for their winter quarters (The site is now Packer John Cabin State Park). Welch cleared what was to become the Packer John Trail. Round Valley was earlier known as Packer John’s Prairie, as it was one of his favorite camping places on his supply trips between Warren and the Boise Basin. The common route from the Columbia River into the Boise Basin went up the Payette River and over the mountains to the Basin. About 1864, the town of Martinsville was started on this route; the name was later changed to Emmettsville and later still to Emmett. Another stage station, Squaw Creek, developed ten miles up the river at the Mitchell-Martin ranch (later the Marsh-Ireton ranch). The real Squaw Creek was on the other side of the river two miles away, but because the ranchers from both upper and lower Squaw Creek valleys got their mail here, it was given that name. There was not a river bridge at the site. In high water, mail and supplies were taken across in a rowboat. Edson Marsh was postmaster there for forty-five years. The nearby town was later called Montour. Another stage station, run by Hank Clark was established at Horseshoe Bend.
Felix Harris located a road between Horseshoe Bend and the Boise Basin that avoided the steep climb over Porter Creek and collected a toll on it. The Harris Toll Road was later managed by his widow. Later owners were George Pettingill, H.H. Hawkins, Edmund Butler and J.M. Morton. The toll road was still in operation as late as 1906.
There were toll charges for some of the roads, ferries, and bridges. The use of tolls was a means of financing road improvements in these early days. The right to share a toll could be granted by county commissioners to someone who constructed a trail, road, ferry, or bridge.

Area Attractions The Payette Lumber Company built a wagon road from Horseshoe Bend to Smiths Ferry through the canyon of the Payette River, completed in 1908, in compliance with a state contract. But there were no provisions for maintain it; the lumber company was not operating, and its responsibilities ceased when the road was completed and accepted. The mail still went into Long Valley over the old original route, and the county was too poor to keep both roads open, so the canyon road gradually became impassable. In the summer of 1886, the Oregon Short Line ran a survey for a railroad through Long Valley, seeking a northwest outlet to avoid the Blue Mountains. The route was not found feasible, and nothing more was done for many years. The activity of the Payette Lumber Company in the first decade of the last century was a persuasive factor in the OSLs decision to extend its lines, and in 1911 it began extending its rails northward from Emmett to Payette Lakes. In 1912, the task of hewing a rail bed out of the granite walls of the canyon of the North Fork of the Payette River began. All supplies, materials and machinery were brought into the canyon over the wagon road, which had been repaired by the state and railroad contractors.
Construction camps were established along the wagon road, and men crossed the swirling waters to their work on suspension bridges and log foot bridges. Several lives were lost in crossing. The rails were laid throughout the canyon in 1913. In the same year, the Idaho Northern Branch spur reached the gorge or cascade in the Payette River and the new town of Cascade was born. Train service between Nampa and Payette Lakes was established in 1914. When the railroad was built along the Payette River into Long Valley, the settlement in Garden Valley, on the South Fork of the Payette, wanted a road to the railroad. Everyone in the valley turned out with teams, plows, and tools, and the women furnished dinners. A mile and a half of road was built the first day, but later the work was harder and required blasting powder. Where the river narrowed to a rocky canyon, work stopped for the winter. Several meetings were held in the valley that winter. A highway district was organized and bonds issued to complete the work. A small part of the road was on the national forest, so the FS contributed $1,500. The job was let to the newly formed Morrison-Knudsen Company and was probably their first Forest Service road contract. It was done by hand and team labor and was finished about July 1, 1915. It gave the settlement in Garden Valley daily mail and an outlet for produce to a railroad on a water-grade, all-year road.

Area Attractions There are many year-round recreation opportunities within the Garden Valley area of the Boise National Forest. Forest visitors will find over 70 campgrounds within the entire forest, and picnic areas providing a variety of recreation experiences. Several of the campgrounds provide access for the physically challenged.

Located north of Garden Valley along the Middle Fork of the Payette River, each unit has parking and can accommodate small to medium size RVs up to 22 feet. Artesian drinking water is available with one hydrant. One vault toilet.
HARDSCRABBLE
North of Garden Valley along the Middle Fork of the Payette River, this site has three units with paved parking which can accommodate small to medium size RVs up to 24 feet. No drinking water available.
TIE CREEK
Units in this campground, located nine miles north of Garden Valley, can accommodate small to medium size RVs up to 16 feet. Drinking water is supplied from a well with a hand pump. One vault toilet. A GREAT “put-in� spot for tubing and rafting the Middle Fork!
TRAIL CREEK
Located 17 miles north of Garden Valley on the Middle Fork of the Payette River, the campground can accommodate RVs up to 22 feet. Two vault toilets. No drinking water is available.
SILVER CREEK
This campground was reconstructed in 2010 and now offers paved roads and paved parking spurs, drinking water and accessible vault toilets. Several single and double campsites are available, all of which are accessible. Each site is equipped with a tent pad, picnic and utility tables and a campfire ring.

Area Attractions PINE FLATS
This campground is located six miles downriver from Lowman on the Banks-Lowman Road. Facilities include two double unit toilets, concrete grills, fire pits, pedestal grills and three hand water pumps. Garbage service is provided. The campground is shaded by a heavy stand of ponderosa pine and natural hot springs are located 1/2 mile down river. CAUTION: Some of the water is very hot and can burn. Nude bathing and soap are prohibited.
Group camping sites around the Garden Valley area include Peace Valley, Lodgepole & Hot Springs.
HOT SPRINGS
Located along the Banks-Lowman Road, next to the South Fork of the Payette River, the campground is named for the nearby hot springs and is covered by old growth ponderosa pine. Popular with boaters, the units have paved parking and can accommodate medium to large size RVs up to 35 feet. All units have tables, grills and fire pits. Group sites have large serving tables with large grills. All group units and units 6-8 are wheelchair accessible. Two vault type toilets and the drinking water system are wheelchair accessible with paved paths. Drinking water is available from a deep well pressurized water system with four hydrants.
The Boise National Forest offers many miles of trails for great horse riding. Two featured equestrian camping areas with established trails are the Whoop-em up Equestrian Campground on the Idaho City RD and Bull Trout Lake Campground on the Lowman RD. Check with the Districts for more information and maps.
This campground is part of the National Reservation System. There are 3 group units available. Units 1 & 2 have a capacity for 200-300 people and unit 3 has a capacity for 40 people. They can be reserved by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Area Attractions River Recreation Opportunities The Payette River is just an hour’s drive from Boise but it still manages to leave civilization far behind. Visitors float a clean mountain river with forested banks and hawks or osprey flying overhead, and different groups enjoy different stretches of the river system. The South Fork of the Payette is an advanced whitewater run for one, two, or three days of excitement. Three-day trips start high in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, above the town of Lowman. After the Deadwood River adds its flow, the river begins to drop about 40 feet per mile with continuous steep rapids. This Canyon stretch is punctuated at its deepest point by a 40-foot waterfall. River runners portage around this spectacular sight then continue on through a narrow gorge filled with natural hot springs. The Middle Fork and the Main Payette River are perfect for families or beginning river rafters looking for a few hours of fun outdoor time. The water is mostly quiet with a few easy class II-III rapids. The Middle Fork offers canoeing, gentle kayaking, tubing, swimming, and fishing. Much of the river is located on federal land with numerous campgrounds available.
