ENJOY THE WINTER IN IDAHO CITY
Winter Fun Available at the Idaho City Park ‘N Ski Areas Strap on the skis or snowshoes and enjoy the snow at any of 17 Park N’ Ski areas across Idaho. Over 180 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails are marked in some of the most scenic areas in Idaho. Idaho has a long snow season and high elevations, which translates into hundreds of miles of skate skiing, traditional skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. In addition to 300 miles of groomed ski trails you will find a few hundred more miles of marked trails that provide solitude and untouched powder. There are four of these areas in Boise County, between Idaho City and Lowman available for a terrific winter day outing.

Revenues from the sale of permits go toward plowing parking lots and improving Nordic ski and snowshoe opportunities. Upon purchasing, skiers and snowshoers can designate which park they would like to have receive their fee. This gives permit purchasers an opportunity to help make improvements to an area of their choice. Additionally, annual permits are good at Park N’ Ski areas in Oregon due to a reciprocity agreement. You must purchase and display your permit in the proper location on your vehicle in order to avoid citations. The Park N’ Ski program is managed primarily by Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, with cooperation and support from U.S. Forest Service, the Idaho Department of Lands, the Idaho Department of Transportation, and many local recreation user groups who provide volunteer trail-enhancement work to make it all possible.

Idaho City - Area Attractions
Idaho City Area Offers Outstanding Nordic Skiing Opportunities The Idaho City Area Yurt and Trail System is made up of 4 Park N’ Ski areas adjacent to Highway 21 between 18 and 25 miles northeast of Idaho City. It is approximately a two-hour drive from Boise. A permit is required to park in the Park N’ Ski parking lots between November 15th and April 30th. An annual pass is $25.00 and a temporary 3-day pass is $7.50. Passes are available for purchase on-line as well as in many of the local sport shops, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Headquarters building at 5657 Warm Springs Avenue in Boise and at Donna’s Place, Tom’s Service Station, Idaho City Grocery in Idaho City, Rays Corner Market, Valley View Chevron in Horseshoe Bend and at the GV Chevron and The Middlefork Trailhead in Garden Valley. All trails in this system are marked by 5” x 7” blue reassurance diamonds (blue blazes). The trails are non-motorized during snow months. Some of the trails are groomed and some are not (see map on web - http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov). For winter use, the trails are generally rated More Difficult or Most Difficult for skiing under good snow conditions. There are some short steep sections with sharp turns requiring advanced skiing techniques. Dogs are not allowed on any of the groomed Banner Ridge Park N’ Ski trails during the winter (Dec 1st Apr 15th). Dogs are welcomed on the trails in the Whoop-Um-Up area and Gold Fork area. Dog owners are responsible for removing all of their dog droppings from the trails and to leash/control their dogs in the parking lots at all times.
Idaho City - Area Attractions The Gold Fork Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trails (Dogs allowed year-round)
Yurts in this area are the Skyline (east side) and Whispering Pines (west side) yurts. The Gold Fork Park N’ Ski area provides access to two complete trail systems on either side of Hwy 21. One trail tours the Gold Fork area, the other loops the Skyline area and connects to the greater Banner Ridge/Beaver Creek trail systems. A separate ungroomed snowshoe trail tours a ridge in the Gold Fork area. There’s also a short snowshoe trail from the Skyline yurt. This is a great place to take kids for an easy, low key outing.
The Whoop-Um-Up Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trails The Beaver Creek Summit Park N’ Ski Parking Area Trail (Dogs allowed year-round)
The yurt located in this area is the Stargaze yurt. The trailhead in the winter and summer is located in the Beaver Creek Summit Park N’ Ski parking lot. The only official trail out of the Beaver Creek Summit parking is the out and back Stargaze trail. The trail is ungroomed in the winter and follows and old road for 1.3 miles and then turns to a single track trail the last .2 miles to where the trail dead-ends at Stargaze point. The trail is rated more difficult under good snow conditions. There are four short, steep sections requiring advanced backcountry skiing techniques.
(Dogs allowed year-round)
Snowshoers with dogs love Whoop-Um-Up because this is one of the areas where dogs are welcome. Dogs are also welcome in the Rocky Ridge yurt. Be aware that the parking area is shared with snowmobiles, so you will encounter snow machines as you gear up for your adventure. Trails can be a bit rugged in this area with a few steep and challenging downhill sections along the creek trail. For cross-country skiers, there are six backcountry yurts operated by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation near the Idaho City Park N’ Ski areas, northeast of Idaho City. They are about an hour from Boise. Idaho City Backcountry Yurts are Accessible in the winter by Nordic ski or snowshoeing. You can choose from six fabulous backcountry yurts: Banner Ridge, Elkhorn, Skyline, Whispering Pines, Rocky Ridge, Stargaze. Each yurt sleeps six people in a comfortably well-furnished atmosphere with high mountain views and no neighbors. In winter, backcountry yurts are accessed by a 2-3 mile ski or snowshoe trek. The backcountry yurts have plenty to offer every outdoor enthusiast at any level, whether beginner or experienced. For more information about cross-country skiing opportunities visit: www.parksandrecreation.idaho. gov.

Idaho City - Real Estate
Horseshoe Bend Horseshoe Bend is the largest city in rural Boise County, with a population of 707.
It is named for its location at the horseshoeshaped U-turn of the Payette River, whose flow direction changes from south to north before heading west to the Black Canyon Reservoir. Black Canyon, only minutes away from town, offers a wide array of water sports and picnicking opportunities. Horseshoe Bend’s current culture is a blend of ranching and is a growing bedroom community for Boise. Its annual events include a banjo festival in late May, the national senior pro rodeo in June, and a fall festival in October.

Lowman
Horseshoe Bend Bonneville Hot Springs
Private bathing and communal soaking in a scenic canyon. 19 miles northeast of Lowman on Highway 21. .3 miles north of Bonneville Campground. Great place to ski or snowshoe to. No time when a hot soak is more welcome! Bonneville is a haven. The aging bathhouse straddles the outflow, and hoses channel hot water into a tub that you can drain and refill after each use. The springs check in at temperatures up to 185 degrees. They flow past the bathhouse and tumble dfirectly over a rocky cliff into a giant soaking pool on one arm of Warm Springs Creek. This is a sandy-bottomed gem that measures a good 25 by 30 feet. More hot water flows down the bank into more pools downstream as well as a secluded waterfall pool or two upstream. The bath house is usable year-round and excellent for a quiet retreat during the winter months.

The “Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway” was so named because of the distinctively high concentration of elk, deer, and bald eagles during the winter months. Wildlife can be observed from highway pullouts between Banks and Lowman, Idaho, in the South Fork of the Payette River Canyon. Spotting scopes and handicap accessibility are also available at specific sites. Big game gather in Wildlife Canyon during the winter and early Spring because the area is lower in elevation than the surrounding mountains and the south-facing slopes have much less snow. They can feed on sagebrush, bitterbrush, and chokecherry. These plants have little nutritional value when compared to the lush grasses and forbs they eat the rest of the year. Because elk and deer eat this low-nutrition food in the winter, they are primarily living off of stored fat reserves that were built up the previous summer and fall.
3.48 Acres Valley View Way, Lowman Breathtaking mountain views from this “dream cabin” building lot in Lowman. Backs up to USFS. Close to the SF Payette River and rafting, kayaking, and canyon views. Property features timber as well as meadow and building pad. Power and phone to lot line. Community irrigation water available. PRICED BELOW ASSESSED VALUE
$48,000
The cold temperatures and lack of nutritional food in the winter stress animals. This winter range is very important to elk and deer. It is an area that is relatively warm, has easily accessible food, and they can just pass the time and conserve energy. Running uses a significant amount of energy that can weaken animals and reduce their chances of surviving the winter. Purposely chasing wildlife jeopardizes their lives and is punishable by state and federal law. Please view all wildlife from a distance and keep pets restrained. If deer and elk start to run or walk away, you are too close!
Some pullouts are plowed during the winter months on Banks-Lowman Rd Hwy 17. The best wildlife viewing pull-outs are located at miles: 17.5 • 20.2 • 21.3 • 21.6 • 23.5 • 23.8 • 27.8 • 33. Look for the following:

MULE DEER You will mostly see mule deer, however, whitetail deer are also seen here. The mule deer is so named because of the size and shape of its ears. It has a white rump patch & narrow black-tipped tail. It holds its tail down when it runs, unlike the whitetail which raises its bushy white tail like a flag.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK The elk has a whitish heartshaped rump patch that surrounds the tail and extends down the upper parts of the thighs. Its head and neck are distinctly darker than the remainder of the body. Today, elk number about one million in North America. This represents roughly ten percent of the estimated population before European settlement of this continent.
THE BALD EAGLE Bald eagles winter in Wildlife Canyon to fish the S. Fork of the Payette River & to eat deer and elk that have died. The bald eagle is not really bald. It actually has white feathers on its head, neck and tail. “Bald” is a derivation of an Old English word meaning white. The eagle was named for the white feathers, instead of a lack of feathers.

A popular soak between Hot Springs Campground and the South Fork of the Payette River, 6 miles southeast of Crouch on Hwy 17. Near milepost 14. There’s a pullout on the bank, and steps lead down to the pool. A comfortable soaker big enough for a family group has been dug out of the bank well above the river. The shallow pool, dammed with rocks, offers a toasty soak year-round courtesy of a shower pipe that transports the hot water from the 100-degree springs.
Pine Flats
Hot dips and cliffside showers near a family campground on the South Fork of the Payette River 5 miles west of Lowman. Pine Flats Campground is located below the BanksLowman Rd. 5.7 miles west of Lowman and 28 miles east of Banks. Look for the hottest pools on paths that wind up the backside of a cliff, and cooler soaks at the bottom. A cascade pouring over a cliff delineates one side of a pool hidden 20 feet above the river. Hot! Cooler pools at the bottom collect the runoff, leading to a large swimming hole at the river’s edge.
Garden Valley - Area Attractions
SILVER CREEK PLUNGE Open Year-Round
Bands of Shoshone, Northern Paiute, and Nez Perce Indians discovered the hot springs in this region and were the first people to use them. Hot springs made good hunting areas because the water’s high mineral content attracted game such as deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. Hot springs also provided for food preparations, bathing opportunities, and some springs were regarded as important spiritual sites.
Camping - Fishing - Cabins Outdoor Recreation - Swimming - Natural Hot Springs Kirkham
In plain view below the highway, these popular pools are frequently filled with people. 4.3 miles east of Lowman on State Hwy 21. Cross the bridge to Kirkham Campground and park at the west end. The Forest Service collects a day-use fee. Large pools with moderate temperatures. Worth trying either during the early mornings or during the winter, when congestion in the campground and number of users is at a low point.

64 -- Boise County Guide -- Winter 2018-2019 Issue
The Mountain Shadows subdivision is nestled in hills overlooking the confluence of the Middle and South Forks of the Payette River at the southwest end of Garden Valley. The area has for many years been a secluded getaway spot for those wishing to flee suburbia for a more rural lifestyle. Travel to and from the city of Boise is now convenient enough for the wishes of many commuting residents. The Garden Valley area offers a diversity of pleasant lifestyle opportunities for those that don’t mind a little snow in winter! Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, rafting and kayaking are just a few of the rewards that await those looking for action. For the rest of us, sitting on the deck taking in the magnificent views and watching the diversity of wildlife throughout four ever-changing seasons is satisfying, indeed!
