SNOWMOBILING Plow through mountain meadows deep with powder, wind along timber lined trails or cruise rolling hillsides. Idaho’s winter playground offers snowmobilers more groomed trails than any other state.
By travelling on three designated scenic byways, you can make a loop trip. From Boise, take Highway 55 to Lowman (be sure and stop in Garden Valley/Crouch). Then go west on Highway 21 through historic Idaho City. The loop is 120 miles.

HOT POOLING An abundant number of natural hot springs dot the area, just waiting to serve as a relaxation spot after a day of winter recreation. Boise County is also home to several developed geothermal pools that are particularly enticing during the winter.

Welcome The “Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway” was so named because of the distinctively high concentration of elk, deer, and bald eagles during the winter months. Wildlife can be observed from highway pullouts between Banks and Lowman, Idaho, in the South Fork Payette River Canyon.

Big game gather in Wildlife Canyon during the winter because the area is lower in elevation than the surrounding mountains and the south-facing slopes have much less snow. They can feed on sagebrush, bitterbrush, and chokecherry. These plants have little nutritional value when compared to the lush grasses and forbs they eat the rest of the year. Because elk and deer eat this low-nutrition food in the winter, they are primarily living off of stored fat reserves that were built up the previoussummer and fall.
Big game are accustomed to vehicles along the highway, but not people. It’s best to watch them from your car in a pull-out. If you do get out of your car, stay close to it. Idaho City Just an hour drive from Boise, along scenic Highway 21, is the classic western town of Idaho City. This town was once the largest mining settlement in the Pacific Northwest. Today it serves as a recreational hub and a popular day trip for residents in the Boise metro area. Idaho City is also surrounded by the Boise National Forest, so it is near some of southwest Idaho’s best outdoor recreational opportunities including ATV riding, hiking, fishing, camping and Nordic skiing! Activities that draw visitors to this location include the public hot springs, car shows, local museums, and the annual Idaho City Days.

Idaho City Idaho City Area Yurts For cross-country skiers, there are backcountry yurts operated by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation near the Idaho City Park N’ Ski areas, northeast of Idaho City. They are about an hour from Boise. Idaho City Backcountry Yurts are Accessible in the winter by Nordic ski or snowshoeing. The Banner Ridge and Stargaze Yurts are the only two in the system that have been deemed safe for use this winter, following an initial U.S.D.A. Forest Service inventory of post Pioneer Fire-related impacts. Each yurt sleeps six people in a comfortably well-furnished atmosphere with high mountain views and no neighbors. In winter, backcountry yurts are accessed by a 2-3 mile ski or snowshoe trek. The backcountry yurts have plenty to offer every outdoor enthusiast at any level, whether beginner or experienced. Trail grooming will not take place this winter due to safety concerns on the trail system. For those wishing to make use of the parking lots to access the area in general and the two open yurts, Park N’ Ski Permits will still be required. Funds from the sale of Park N’ Ski Permits specifically support the contracted plowing of parking lots for winter access. Maps are available that identify areas within the region that are deemed safe for recreation and those still posted as closed. Parking is available at the Whoop-Um-Up parking area (Park-n-Ski Fee area), or at the Edna Creek Campground (no fee).
With more than 7,200 miles of groomed trails and an endless horizon of untracked powder, Idaho is snowmobile paradise. Here you’ll find more groomed trails than any other Western state set in some of the most spectacular scenery you’ve ever seen. Sun-drenched vistas give way to blanketed valleys and frozen lakes. Rolling hillsides, forested mountains and wide-open plains await.
To get to the Rock Creek trail, you must start on the Edna Creek trail across from the WhoopUm-Up Parking area on Hwy 21. Travel the Edna Creek trail, which is 5 miles in length to Five Corners. There you connect with the Rock Creek trail, which takes you into Lowman. The trail is 12 miles long. In Lowman you may connect with other trails that go to Stanley. This trail is groomed.
Garden Valley offers 250 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. At the end of your day, soak in one of the area’s natural geothermal hot springs, or at one of our prime developed hot springs pool.
Clear Creek Trail
Keep in mind to let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return!
Parking is available at plowed parking areas in Lowman.
Our season stretches from November to April so there’s plenty of time to take it all in. Gas, food and lodging are close by, with the local community welcoming winter sports enthusiasts.
This trail will take you up Clear Creek Road into Bear Valley. Once in Bear Valley there are many play areas. Elk may be seen in the lower elevations. The trail follows the Bear Valley Road FS #582 up beyond Bruce Meadows and then takes you back to Highway 21 in the Challis National Forest. The trail will take you to Stanley in approximately 4 hours.
Bear Valley Trail
Parking is the same as for the Clear Creek Trail. The trail takes off from the Clear Creek Trail up in the Bear Valley area. Take Road #579 and follow it as far as you would like. When you get to Landmark/Deadwood Road #555, it’s as far as most go. The road going north has potential avalanche areas and is not recommended for travel.

Garden Valley - Area Attractions Winter Hot Springs -- South Fork of the Payette River. Garden Valley and Lowman Areas Hot Springs Campground
A popular soak between Hot Springs Campground and the South Fork of the Payette River, 6 miles southeast of Crouch on Hwy 17. Near milepost 14. There’s a pullout on the bank, and steps lead down to the pool. A comfortable soaker big enough for a family group has been dug out of the bank well above the river. The shallow pool, dammed with rocks, offers a toasty soak year-round courtesy of a shower pipe that transports the hot water from the 100-degree springs.
Pine Flats
Hot dips and cliffside showers near a family campground on the South Fork of the Payette River 5 miles west of Lowman. Pine Flats Campground is located below the BanksLowman Rd. 5.7 miles west of Lowman and 28 miles east of Banks. Look for the hottest pools on paths that wind up the backside of a cliff, and cooler soaks at the bottom. A cascade pouring over a cliff delineates one side of a pool hidden 20 feet above the river. Hot! Cooler pools at the bottom collect the runoff, leading to a large swimming hole at the river’s edge.
Kirkham
In plain view below the highway, these popular pools are frequently filled with people. 4.3 miles east of Lowman on State Hwy 21. Cross the bridge to Kirkham Campground and park at the west end. The Forest Service collects a day-use fee. Large pools with moderate temperatures. Worth trying either during the early mornings or during the winter, when congestion in the campground and number of users is at a low point.

Garden Valley - Area Attractions Bonneville Hot Springs
Private bathing and communal soaking in a scenic canyon. 19 miles northeast of Lowman on Highway 21. .3 miles north of Bonneville Campground. Great place to ski or snowshoe to. No time when a hot soak is more welcome! Bonneville is a haven. The aging bathhouse straddles the outflow, and hoses channel hot water into a tub that you can drain and refill after each use. The springs check in at temperatures up to 185 degrees. They flow past the bathhouse and tumble dfirectly over a rocky cliff into a giant soaking pool on one arm of Warm Springs Creek. This is a sandy-bottomed gem that measures a good 25 by 30 feet. More hot water flows down the bank into more pools downstream as well as a secluded waterfall pool or two upstream. The bath house is usable year-round and excellent for a quiet retreat during the winter months.
Sacajawea
21 miles northeast of Lowman -- pulloff to Grandjean. Ski or snowmobile in approximately 5.3 miles, just past the Wapiti Creek Bridge. Climb down the rocks to the pools. A number of soaker-friendly pools line the shore along the scenic South Fork of the Payette River. The outflow comes from several springs at temperatures up to 153 degrees as it fans out down the bank. Fine-tune the pool temperatures by adding river water. Welcome refuge for a great warm up during the winter months!

Garden Valley - Area Attractions Garden Valley • Crouch The community is surrounded in all directions by mountain peaks -- some over 7,000 feet. Two river systems carve major valleys covered in green to sustain a variety of wildlife, stock and horses. In 1934 a new post office established the identity of Crouch, now one of the commercial districts for Garden Valley. The town was named after Billy Crouch, a miner who homesteaded near the confluence of the Middle and South Fork Rivers. In the 1920s, Crouch donated property for a new community hall in Garden Valley. Population -- 2,000 + ??? Elevation -- 3,200 ft.
